Surprisingly good for AYCE sushi. This is the former Reel Fish restaurant in Lafayette which shuttered in 2024. The space is cavernous but somewhat lacking in atmosphere as before so I would recommend sitting at the bar especially if Aldo is working. He is a very personable sushi chef with great customer rapport. He also gave us lots of tips and recs. I must've eaten 30 pieces of fish! There's plenty for non fish eaters too as my husband is allergic to fish and left plenty full. You can get up to 20 pieces of sashimi so you don't get bloated from all the rice. The pieces are not much smaller than at traditional sushi places. All the staff are super friendly and attentive. You won't have to wait long to place orders. For AYCE night time, the rate was an unbelievably reasonable $35 a person! Drinks are reasonable also. read more

This little "hole in the wall" is a hidden gem. They have an all you can eat sushi and dim sum special that is such a bargain it's hard not to eat here everyday. For less than $40 a person (kids are even less so) you can pick and choose from a wide array of rolls, nigiri, dim sum, small entrees and more. You may be thinking to yourself as i did, "the fish must be low quality or the sushi rolls aren't big" but you'd be wrong. I'm no novice when it comes to quality sushi and i can stand behind the quality of this restaurant. I was excited to learn that the business is completely asian owned and operated. Really the worst sushi experience I have ever had. The food tasted rancid. The fried chicken nuggets were inedible.

Absolutely disgusting food and business conduct. Paid over $40 for: 2 old and too spicy tasting rolls, weird potato "croquettes"(spicy orange breading), shrimp was limp and in overly large and thick bread "cocoon". Soda costs extra, no free refills. Barely understood their English (immigrant myself). Charging for 'take out' on top base costs for each piece you hate (even if you tell them) or can't stuff in. Rude staff, sad vibe, hard furniture, not clean, against all American standards of restaurant service. Horrible place, will advise anyone to stay away and not be taken advantage of. I ordered 3 items à la carte, and each exceeded expectations. The Escolar sushi ($7, they call it " very super white tuna") and the Yellowtail sushi (also $7), as well as the 8 pc Blue Crab California roll ($9, totally worth the extra $2 for real crab) were fresh and generously cut. Very attentive staff. They definitely made sure that I had my order, checked in in how everything was tasting, and kept me full. The food was super fresh and was delicious. Wish I could have been there for more, but they were very strict on the time limit. (Which I understand) They also had tvs where I could watch sports. After a very weird interaction with one of the hosts while being seated, we ordered and began to wait. 45-55 minutes later, after politely waiting and inquiring about the status of our small three roll order, and after watching two to three tables get sat after us, order, eat, and leave, I inquired again about whether they had skipped us over. They then promptly told us that they were miraculously "working on it right now." When we ordered, the place was packed. When we got our food, it was nearly empty. First and foremost, I've never had real sushi that has lettuce in it, especially slightly wilted lettuce. That is usually an indicator that the owners aren't Japanese. Second, as my son observed, the rolls are incredibly small in number. We ordered shrimp tempura, and it just wasn't tasty (lettuce wasn't helping). We also ordered the lobster and avocado roll for $14.00. The amount of lobster was so minuscule it was infuriating to pay that much for the roll. Third, nearly everything had a spicy topping, which is fine with me but not my kids. I ordered New Wave and it was just gross. The best sushi we've had so far in the area is at Aji's Sushi in Lafayette. It's a far cry from what you'll get in Japan, California, Virginia, and Hawaii, but it's the best we've had around here. I definitely, without a doubt, will not be going back to Hokkaido Sushi with Aji's Sushi not much farther away. read more

However, we are both big sushi lovers and were super disappointed in almost every roll/nigiri we got. By the end we both decided the only good fish was the salmon and yellowtail. The spicy tuna almost made us gag, but so did all of the other tuna items we tried! Not sure if it was just an off night, but definitely not worth ever going back.
