The Escolar sushi ($7, they call it " very super white tuna") and the Yellowtail sushi (also $7), as well as the 8 pc Blue Crab California roll ($9, totally worth the extra $2 for real crab) were fresh and generously cut. They had a wide variety of options on the menu so whether someone like sushi or prefers cooked food, this is a place anyone can find something to eat. This little "hole in the wall" is a hidden gem. They have an all you can eat sushi and dim sum special that is such a bargain it's hard not to eat here everyday. For less than $40 a person (kids are even less so) you can pick and choose from a wide array of rolls, nigiri, dim sum, small entrees and more. You may be thinking to yourself as i did, "the fish must be low quality or the sushi rolls aren't big" but you'd be wrong. I'm no novice when it comes to quality sushi and i can stand behind the quality of this restaurant. I was excited to learn that the business is completely asian owned and operated. I am so happy we have this place in Lafayette now. (Border to Louisville) This is my favorite Sushi Restaurant in the area. You can tell the quality of the rice and fish is better then at many other places. They even offer an 'All You Can Eat' option that I love! There is a special menu and a couple restrictions, but its an awesome deal. Its a family run business and the owner and his wife are there every day. The service is great, fast and everybody is so friendly. I did see some comments about saying the service was slow, but that must have been on a busy Friday or Saturday night, because these guys are cranking it when it gets busy. Enormous pieces of fish on the nigiri and sashimi and in the rolls. So many of the rolls are fresh, light, and delicious. Couldn't recommend this place enough. I came here with my girlfriend looking for AYCE sushi and a great atmosphere, we left very sorely disappointed. After a very weird interaction with one of the hosts while being seated, we ordered and began to wait. 45-55 minutes later, after politely waiting and inquiring about the status of our small three roll order, and after watching two to three tables get sat after us, order, eat, and leave, I inquired again about whether they had skipped us over. They then promptly told us that they were miraculously "working on it right now." When we ordered, the place was packed. When we got our food, it was nearly empty. I went with my daughter on Saturday evening to try their all-you-can-eat sushi. When we walked in, we were greeted by the staff and seated promptly at a booth. The interior is clean and well-decorated. The staff were attentive and consistently came to check-in on us and refill our water. My daughter and I were excited when we saw the variety of options on the AYCE menu: specialty sushi rolls, nigiri, sashimi, appetizers, soups, and rice plates. When we received our orders, the presentation of the sushi rolls and nigiri looked amazing. The quality of each one was superb. First and foremost, I've never had real sushi that has lettuce in it, especially slightly wilted lettuce. That is usually an indicator that the owners aren't Japanese. Second, as my son observed, the rolls are incredibly small in number. We ordered shrimp tempura, and it just wasn't tasty (lettuce wasn't helping). We also ordered the lobster and avocado roll for $14.00. The amount of lobster was so minuscule it was infuriating to pay that much for the roll. Third, nearly everything had a spicy topping, which is fine with me but not my kids. I ordered New Wave and it was just gross. The best sushi we've had so far in the area is at Aji's Sushi in Lafayette. It's a far cry from what you'll get in Japan, California, Virginia, and Hawaii, but it's the best we've had around here. I definitely, without a doubt, will not be going back to Hokkaido Sushi with Aji's Sushi not much farther away. read more
