I love it. So delicious and beautiful. They cut the cucumber into a flower to hold the sashimi which I never had anywhere. Amazing!

Of course we always take the bonito flakes which arrive dancing on top of the food, to wave in the escaping heat of the fresh seafood omelet. They have a roasted barley tea I love that has no caffeine as made without a decaffeinating process and so different than herbals common in Boulder. It has real substance. As we started to eat our pork gyoza and Ebi shumai we saw a lit candle in some food being carried across the room. Having eaten here baby times over the year, we were surprised as we had never seen this here. The entire restaurant broke in singing happy birthday to someone too far for us to see. As a server was passing our table, I mentioned we were celebrating my husband's birthday too. He said meh!d let someone know. As we were waiting for our dessert later, the owner who we've met before , with one of the servers who was carrying an ice cream mochi with a flaming birthday candle arrived and placed it in front of my husband and all the patrons broke out in sing again! Who knew this was a tradition here? The owner, who is almost always on the floor had an instant camera and too a picture of our table with the candle celebration. He made a copy for us to take home and one for nh husband to sign which will go up on some wall I had never noticed. We'll be sure to check in the walk the next time we are in. It's such a fun place with really good food. Do make a reservation these days. It's always busy, the now are only open Wed- Sat for dinner. As we were leaving on a very cold night, there weee people packed into the little entry way waiting for seats. One woman was shivering as she had just flown in from FL she said, unprepared for the recent shift back to winter today. Shocked me this morning too.

Servers were extremely friendly and they have a button you press when you're ready to order/want the check which was really convenient. Food came out fast. My favorite sushi was probably the salmon nigiri. It was extremely buttery and fresh. Also the eel was great. I wouldn't recommend the maki/rolls as much as the nigiri. They also had a lot of options that weren't sushi like ramen, salad, rice dishes, okonomiyaki, and more. Definitely some menu items you can't get at any Japanese restaurant. I would definitely recommend coming here.

Not pictured, we also ordered the duck soba noodles and the scallops. Everything tasted delicious. I do wish that I had saved some of the soba for when the hamachi came out but I did order those later. I would have preferred the hamachi to come with a bit of rice on the side but my boyfriend didn't mind the salad. It's a great date spot and if we were to sit inside there's options for Japanese style floor seating. When you go inside they ask you to take off your shoes and provide slippers for the restroom. It feels very relaxing and home-y.

Izakaya's are Japanese bars that have quick bites and snacks to choose from. I was excited to see we were heading in. Once arrived on Sunday night we were greeted and welcomed. Asked if we would like to take our shoes off and walk in as in Japanese culture this is very common. It really felt like I was in a Japanese izakaya in Japan We ordered - Tofu Steak - Baked Salmon w/ ikura & rice - Duck Skewers - Salmon Carpaccio Everything was delicious and cooked well. I could have ate 2 bowls of the salmon. Everything is nicely sized but a good size to not get too full to order more. This location is combined with another sushi restaurant and it's cool to see the sushi being made in front of you. Will be back!!

Sushi joints aren't known for their cocktails but Japango takes it very serious. There are so many options on the menu it was hard to choose. I started with a fun spin on a Mai Tai called Mai-Tide. It was delicious and complex with some fabulous vacation garnish. Yes that is a seaweed strip. (Photo #1) My second was Yorokobi Joy, a spin on a Vieux Carre which is a classic whiskey/cognac recipe. It was boozy in all the best ways with some incredible ingredients. The first sip is the best because you're not ready for the herbal flavor explosion. The Japanese whiskey and cognac balance well with some wild flavors provided by a lovely Amaro (Cardamaro) and Saffron-Plum bitters. The kicker in a Vieux Carre is the Benedictine which glues all the amazingness together. Delish!! Because Japango is on Pearl and it was a football weekend, we had the perfect patio table on the sidewalk for the Friday night Stampede where the CU Buffs band and cheerleaders march down Pearl. What a great night. Go check out Japango when you make it to the always amazing Boulder. Salute . It's sort of like having to kids with the same heritage but they are not exactly the same but neither is better than the other, they are just different. Tonight we needed a fish fix to get healthy Vitanin D for me and good clean protein for my husband. With veggies of course an a tasty dessert, I'm partial to sashimi and had some tender large pieces of very fresh hamachi. My husband also likes crab and crispy so he had the spider roll. We shared some happy hour specials, salmon avocado roll and yellowtail scallion. We started with the warm "magic mushrooms" which is named for its appearance but is actually salmon wrapped around a core of avocado and grill and garnished with a nice soy based drizzle and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Nice on a chilly evening with snow still melting across town. Since he had a few leftovers to serve as his lunch tomorrow, I ordered the salmon skin roll to go. Since it is not raw salmon it holds up beautifully overnite in the fridge. When home alone, it's my go to takeout item. The staff is impeccable and the seating pretty and comfortable. When you first walk in, there are two kiosks where you can place your order and you may walk up to the cash register and order with a live person. We chose to order at the register and the employee was very friendly and explained the whole Motomaki process, which we appreciated. The process on how-it-works is located on the wall, but we both prefer in-person customer service. We ordered three rolls and one fountain drink for a total of $57 with tax.... I thought that was high for what we got. The service was fast and the ingredients were fresh. I'm glad I got the sauce on the side. My husband didn't care for the rolls because he said the seaweed was too fishy and he described them as "seaweed burritos". The rolls fell apart after we took off the aluminum foil. Also, just an FYI: three rolls were too many and we both would have been fine with one each but now we know for next time. Overall, I thought the food tasted good, the service was great, the price was high, and we would opt for bowls next time.

I appreciate the options for greens, white rice, brown rice, or a combo for the base. I loved the crispy eggplant, especially dipped in the jalapeño aioli. The salmon poke was cut and flavored well. The happy hour $3 off from 2-5 p.m. is a great deal and brought my filling bowl down to $15.75. My order wasn't accurate -- I had to go up to the counter to ask for missing items that I had paid to add (edamame and a side of jalapeño aioli), but I was given them without a fuss. Everything was delicious and portion sizes were generous. I'd love to come back next time I'm in the area.
