Late this afternoon, I very stupidly clicked on a bad link. And thus began my nightmare with endless popups about how I had a virus and I couldn't use my computer. I work solely online so I was desperate. I went in at 5 and they close at 6 - Larry came back from his break right away and had me up and running in an hour. I have no idea how much this is supposed to cost but it was worth it to me - alo because stupidly I had never backed up my files - especially my MS Word files with years of writing on it. Incompetent or dishonest? I have walked by this shop for many years and admired what it seemed to offer. When my top of the line 27" iMac 2012 developed issues with its display I brought it to this store. I agreed to pay $112 for an assessment. Later that day, I received the news that the display screen was defective and the opinion was that it was not worth fixing. I was encouraged to just donate the computer to the shop. On consideration, I decided to return to pick the computer up, since I wished to perform a more recent backup and consider my options more fully. I advised the owner, Gregory Baker, of my plan. Imagine my dismay, when getting home I realized the computer no longer booted up properly. The computer immediately ran on full fan speed when turned on and every process moved at a snail's pace. On returning to the shop I was faced with denials. The owner insisted that the computer had been returned to me in the same condition as I had brought it in the first place. Although I was not comfortable being treated this dismissive manner, I stood my ground. Eventually, I was able to convince the Gregory and another technician to address my complaint properly. They discovered that in fact a temperature sensor had not been reconnected prior to returning the computer to me. It was confirmed that this would have caused the symptoms the computer was exhibiting. Altogether an extremely troubling experience! read more

We recently bought my daughter an affordable used laptop at PC Galore. The price was right and it works great. I went back a couple of weeks later when my own PC died. PC Galore got me set up with a new-used PC in less than one day. I then went back to have them reconfigure my Outlook email and import my data after trying unsuccessfully myself. Larry understood exactly the issues I was having and set up my multiple email accounts, calendar and contacts exactly as I wanted and with no data loss. I dropped off the PC in the morning and picked it up in afternoon. I feel so lucky to have a local, independent computer shop run by true computer people nearby and hope they are never gentrified out of the neighbourhood. And, yeah, that computer museum is pretty fascinating. read more

I have never experienced worse customer service. In short, I wasted $150 and lost 2 days while these guys wasted my time. I needed to backup 300GB worth of video footage, so I went in to purchase external hard drives, asking they be programmed for a Mac with a USB-A to USB-C transformer (new mac, no USB-A inputs). $150 and about 45 min of time to get it all set up. Got home, they didn't work-- lights turned on but nothing came up on my mac. Went back the following day, where they confirmed the transformer was part of a bad batch they received. To simplify the process, I asked whether I could return the external drives & transformer and instead have them upload my 300GB of files to a google drive. They said it was fine-- I would give them access to the folder, they would charge me for the time to set it up, which aligned with the minimum hourly of $100 and would get the job done. I could use my credit, no problem. I gave them access to the file through the emails they provided. First the store email, then they requested I share with associate's personal email too. We also ran through storage available in my google drive (was showing 5TB, so enough for the upload). They estimated it would be done by the following morning. Things we're looking up. I received a call about 4-5 hours later saying the storage had ran out, asking that I come in to check what was going on from my account which had higher permissions. When I arrived, instead of trying to figure out the issue by logging into my account, they said that I had to leave my computer there for them to upload the files for me from my account. I said it was a pretty expensive price tag to just be using their internet, since part of the convenience was that I could access my computer during the upload time. They said they could no longer use their account (either emails they had provided) because they couldn't confirm whether the files were "nefarious" and that they didn't imply that, but they just couldn't know for sure. Why this wasn't an issue 5 hours previously when we first discussed the set up beats me. They couldn't explain it either. Again, looking to streamline, I proposed giving them access to my account from their computer to complete the upload. They said they couldn't complete the upload unless I left my computer and they wouldn't be using their own computers. Leaving my laptop with them was simply not an option because I need to work. So instead I had to figure something else out. To top it all off, when we processed the bill, they charged me the full credit. When I asked about the $100 charge and them refunding me for the faulty transformer they sold me, they said they had to apply that credit because they spent more time than anticipated to set up the upload. Even though only 15GB of 150GB of files were uploaded. So, in conclusion-- the files weren't uploaded, I left with zero hardware, wasted 2 days visiting the store 3 times, and they milked me for $150. I interacted directly with the store manager, who didn't provide any kind of problem solving or compromise, or interest that I had a positive customer experience. They are incompetent, unorganized and unable to solve customer needs. A pretty useless business if you ask me. read more

I happened by this place when I was on my way somewhere else. I had some time to kill and ended up spending an awful long time here asking stupid questions and looking at different things. The staff were pretty patient with me and I ended up getting the right thing. They have a very real attitude here, not a department story phonyness which I appreciate. My issue was correctly identified over the phone and I was provided a quote. They fixed my issue and as a bonus replaced parts they had on hand that weren't necessary but certainly has made my laptop work better (replaced fan) without charge. I thought I was going to have to replace my computer but they have extended its life. I prefer fixing rather than replacing as it's better for the environment, our local economy etc. I love this local business! read more

When I brought my computer in, Ari (young guy, very nice) told me I would be charged their $70 service fee up front and, if the problem turned out to be in my charger rather than the computer port, they would just charge me the price of the charger and refund the difference. I thought that was fair and agreed. It turned out it was the charger, not the port. When I went to pick it up, some older manager type tried to charge me an additional $50 for a new charger. Naturally, I protested and explained what I had been told originally. If I had know they might charge me a total of $120 for a charger, I wouldn't have dropped it off in the first place. I suggested they honor the original agreement. They refused to budge, explaining that the service fee is always extra beyond the parts. My problem isn't with their policy. It's fine if they want to charge high prices. My problem is that they didn't honor the agreement I made originally which is unfair and poor business. They even called Ari up and he changed his story, suggesting I had misunderstood rather than owning up to what he told. I got the impression that the senior employees at this store have created a fairly toxic environment where younger employees are afraid to admit their their mistakes. For example, on the phone earlier that week the technician seemed exceptionally irritated by a simple clerical mistake Ari had made writing my name down. Similarly, that same manager type was trying to show this other younger employee how to use some feature of the invoice software and spoke to her rather harshly, clearly impatient with her as she was learning. The moral: it's not just a one off mistake. The social environment here doesn't encourage good business practices. read more

I discovered something about myself today - I'm a tech geek, but for retro technology. So PC Galore's window display and "museum" of old computers completely captivated me, catapulting me back to the time when I wished I had a Commodore 64 and when having a borrowed Apple for the summer to play Pong (or was it Breakout?) was the bomb. (For you amateur archaeologists, yah, I'm freaking old, OK?) It's not about the technology, it's about the memories. Of those heady days in the late 70s/early 80s when computers were slow, but new and nobody really knew what they were good for, but they wanted them anyway. As the quotations accompany each "exhibit" show, even heads of technology companies at the time had no idea what to make of home computers. Of monochrome screens and boxy designs and modems with flashing red lights, and look at that funny old Mac with the tiny screen and integrated disk drive - Caitlin wrote incendiary articles for the Degrassi Digest on one just like it - you go, girl! They also have an Imsai 8080 - the computer Matthew Broderick almost started a nuclear war with in WarGames. With switches and all - all it needs is a rotary dial modem. Gloriously primitive, these machines held the seeds of the future. Kinda makes you think. It was total geek fit reverie time. The guy working there seemed a bit scared. The repair service was exceptional, customer service not so much. As I read a few of the reviews while getting some what frustrated with the tone of the workers. Communication was lacking as well. I've done many customer service jobs even in the most stressful environments and I was disappointed in the fact that the estimate of time kept getting delayed. Now I am completely grateful that the team went beyond what I originally asked for however would wish that they had communicated more. I had to call multiple times to get a straight answer. Also message to the owners. Don't blame it on the customers ever. If you can't take the frustration or heat they have a towards you find another job. Customer is always right. And even when they are wrong they are always right. And you must keep that mentality. If there is to many jobs happening then don't accept any until the current load is done. These guys did fix my device eventually, and I am happy for that. However, there are plenty of places you can take your device for repairs in Vancouver; having choice is a good thing. I had to be proactive and call several times over many weeks to get an update on my device, starting with inquiring if they'd even looked at it yet (after giving them a generous week to approach me), to inquiring as to whether they'd received the part they were needing to fix it. First it was, "we need this part". Then, they had to order it from another source. That's fine, but then I had to approach them again: "did the part come in?" I understand this adds time to the whole experience, I just felt like every time I inquired, it was to give them a nudge to do the next step or else I'd still be sitting here without my device back. There was never a "sorry it's taking so long", "thanks for your patience", etc. - you know, the kind of general patter that a professional business would say, even if insincere, to keep a customer happy and confident that they haven't been forgotten. When my device was ready I spoke to Greg and he knew what morning and what time I was stopping by. When I got there, they had a young woman at the counter working. She was nice, but brand new so she had some trouble and eventually had to call Greg to come out and help her. He appears from the back and proceeds to check the bill, etc and help her. I'm standing there and he never says "Hi", never greets me by name (which he obviously knew who I was as he was looking at the bill and I had said exactly what time I was coming), never a "thanks for your patience", "sorry it took a bit longer", "goodbye and don't come back"...nothing. I have no issue with the pricing, I must make clear. My device was fixed, but honestly these guys act like they really don't care, and so neither do I; I will never return nor recommend them even though the job was completed. They are real-life stereotypes of the socially awkward nerd who tinkered with computers in their mom's basement, getting mom's home cooked food and having their laundry done for them, while the rest of us were above ground learning how to socialize, make friends, and operate in society. read more

I thought long and hard about where to go for a refurbished lap top. I had done some research in hopes of not being taken advantage of by a 'sales man'. And I was so happy when I chose this shop. Ben is a savvy, techy and really nice salesman on staff. The older men should smile bigger but Ben saves the day. He's kind, courteous and most of all, knowledgeable. Therefore, I bought a laptop, apple ipad, a carry bag, and will definitely bring my stuff in to be repaired next time. These days I need to be able to trust a business before I spend my hard earned money there. So it is, I spent 2+ hours on the bus and sky train to get there. It's worth it!!! read more

My computer crashed and I lost all of my work history. I work from home so this is my livelihood (I know, I should have had it backed up). I took my computer in to PC Galore on a whim, and am SO glad I did! They managed to fix my computer and recover ALL of my history - and it was not easy!!! I don't think the result would have been the same, had I taken it anywhere else. I can't recommend these guys enough, especially Larry. I will go back for all of my computer needs. read more

5 stars because I have gone to PC Galore four times (different machines) and they have identified and solved/fixed the problem each time within two working days. I don't ask them questions over the phone. I simply take the laptop/desktop into the small shop so that my ill-informed questions do not mislead them. They also help me understand what the problem was, and indicate whether they find the hardware promising for another spell or on its last legs. read more

I took an external hard drive in an enclosure in a week ago. The last time I had a back up drive like this fail was due to the SATA link - and just buying a new enclosure solved the problem. That was done in a day. I had to call after four days just to find out what was going on - and they had not even opened the case. They told me today that the enclosure was OK but the drive itself was damaged. I think that the diagnosis could have been done sooner and they could have been more pro-active about keeping me informed. Maybe $60 covers their costs but it did not seem very good value to me. read more

I had some 5.25 inch floppy disks and wanted to see if it was at all possible to get any of the content from them put on a memory stick. Everyone I talked to including computer experts said this would be impossible, as the disks were probably too old anyway and no one had the equipment. Well, I went to PC Galore and they were able to get files even off the bad disks, and I got everything I wanted for a very reasonable price. This will save me hours and hours of typing, or, for one file, the only place I had it at all, so it saved me a complete loss of an important file. I was extremely impressed with PC Galore. These guys are my new go-to people for out-of-warranty Apple products. My 6 year old iMac needed a replacement hard drive. Luckily for me, the Apple store tech made sure I had enough information about what that repair should cost, and what should be discussed, that I would know if I was being ripped off. Next stop was an authorized Apple reseller on West Broadway. I walked away from that place before they'd even finished their quote. Their estimate was at $455 for a straight drive replacement, before we'd even gotten to the data transfer from my external back up. All of the pricing he'd reviewed at that point was at least double what I'd been told to expect by the Apple tech. He also described a 7 to 9-day 'diagnostic' process my computer would require before they could proceed with any repairs. I'd already had a diagnostic done at the Apple store, so... I have no idea what this would have been about. Next call was to PC Galore. Their quote for the same replacement, including data transfer, was $219... total. They asked if I wanted to upgrade to an SSD drive - something the Apple tech had recommended, and thought a reputable repair shop should discuss. Cost was a little higher, but has given me a much faster machine. My computer was ready for me the same day, fully restored and cleaned. No hesitation in recommending these guys as fast and honest. BEWARE! Dont take your computer here for service as they wont even think of turning the power on unless you pay $67.00 up front. I called to ask when they could take a look at my desktop 'why tomorrow,' says Greg. I bring the computer in first thing and then 2 days go by and no call? I call and someone says sorry we have been busy and haven't looked at it!?! 4 days go by and still no call so when I go to pick up my computer and ask for a refund. He says we dont give refunds. This is customer service? He calls Larry who says "ya, I turned it on and its seemed to work just fine.' That's it, no service notes, no phone call no apology and definitely no business from me. Save a headache an $67 - go up the street. read more

I've now purchased over 5 computers over the years for our business from PC Galore and since the refurbs were still great, I've luckily only had to go back for minor issues or troubleshooting. This place looked like maybe they were going to be great, and then backfired horribly on us. It started when my partners mac computer died on us. And she was writing her final essays for school on it, so we just need to transfer files off the hard drive from the Mac to my PC. We went in at about noon on a Monday. My partner needed to finish her essay for Tuesday morning, and the guy said it wouldn't be ready until the afternoon on Tuesday. Which was fine. He burnt the files to a disc and we were able to use my work computer. The guy was nice. We paid when we picked up the disc. It was a mistake. We went in on Tuesday to pick up the PC. It was a different guy, he hadn't even started working on it yet. He said that he took it apart, and was just about to install the software. Except, the other guy had to take it apart to get the files off to burn them to a disc. So that was his first lie. He told us that maybe it would be ready by the end of the day. So once again my partner had to do her homework at my work. Very inconvenient, Especially when you've paid a guy a hundred bucks to have it done. When we finally went in on Wednesday morning. It was ready. I politely complained, saying that we weren't satisfied, that this wasn't ready when they said it was going to be. Also, my PC now starts wanting to run a disc check everytime. They tried to say it must have been like that before, which it wasn't. Anyways, long story short, they didn't apologize, they took our money and ran, they were lazy and rude. I've never written a negative review in my life. My advice, cut off your hands before trusting these guys. read more
