I'm grateful to this shop for what they didn't do. I had a Acer Chromebook with a fritzy screen. After a 5 minute phone discussion we agreed the lcd screen was broken, as opposed to a loose wire. My son's expensive gaming laptop started to overheat and had problems starting. The warranty was over with Razor and he couldn't play like a pro with the Apple Mac. Luckily I looked up the reviews with yelp and came here right away to fix the laptop. Inside there's a wall full of computers and mobile phone from over 30 years ago. It's was neat and looked like a museum. They advised us it would cost $145 and most likely water damage. One thing I liked is you don't have to leave money first for them until u come get your laptop like some other places. Like seriously isn't $3000 laptop sufficient? Lol They advised us it would take couple days and if they detect other problems we shall be notified. We got the laptop back and it's working great. read more

I can't rave about this place enough. A friend recommended them to me and I have already recommended them to another friend who received super fast service! Me, not such good news - my MacBook Pro is RIP but they told me what was wrong with it and took the time to explain everything until I understand. Wow! Having dealt ineffectively with the Apple Genius bar, I was relieved that I could take my Mac Mini and my La Cie external drive somewhere that had in depth testing and real information for me. The Hackery was a one stop deal. Their customer service is great. The lack of lustre in the interior of the shop is likely a reason that the price for repairs so very reasonable. This is not about a sexy exhibition of toys. The people here know their stuff and talk with you about your stuff like you are a real person having a real issue. Refreshing! They also advised me on how to be doubly sure to have a back up of my system as I did have a hard drive (external), but we were not sure if both the Mini and external drive had failed. As it was, the external was fine and the Mini had issues. I now have an SSD in my Mac Mini instead of a disk drive. This saved me over $1000 in replacement fees for a new Mac Mini. The possiblity of doing this switch in the same machine was not even mentioned to me in the many times I contacted Apple. At the Hackery I also bought a second external drive at a real good price: a one terabyte Adata. It is tiny and effective and will be my go to Time Machine back up drive. I will use the La Cie as a secondary back up drive as it is older. They repair just about everything computer related, not just Macs. This is a fine example of a local business filling a niche that has been vacated by the larger corporations. It is also a prime example of restore and reuse rather than buying new over and over again. The Hackery is a treasure and is filled with knowledgeable people who care. read more

Reviews looked good so thought I'd give them a chance, but didn't get past the phone call. I have a very simple laptop repair (new thermal paste), but was told I either need to leave my computer for 3-5 days, or pay *double the rate* for "priority". As 3-5 days is a long time to be without my primary computer I asked if I could bring it closer to the time someone would actually be able to look at it and was told "no". This might be acceptable for typewriter repair in 1976, but in 2019 when basic scheduling should be a non-issue, this policy just feels like a shady money grab. read more

I love this place, the staff is super friendly and prices for repairs are very reasonable. They even fix vintage ( ie, more than 5 years old) Macs! This place is a great incentive to fix your old machine rather than having to shell out the big bucks for the current model. As well, it's better for the environment to fix, recycle, reuse or repurpose your old electronic items. Originally, I had gone to the store named after fruit and the condescending genius told me they wouldn't even open my computer because it was too old. The woman told me to open it myself and jiggle the battery around. I told her I did not feel confident to do that myself. She kind of sighed and rolled her eyes and told me I could go to an authorized repair place, and see if they would look at it, even though it was so old. I asked for a suggested place and she told me I could go to a place on Broadway I'll name here as Stupid Computing. Long story short they charged me a boatload of money trying to convince me I needed expensive new parts, which I knew I didn't. I was pretty sure the battery may need replacing. After all the money I spent, the computer still didn't work and when I called they said they would have to charge me another diagnostic fee! I gave up. Until recently it gathered dust but I had a newer machine that needed some repair and not only did The Hackery fix it, but they installed a new battery in for older model for free! And not once did they roll their eyes at me. I will always come here first in the future to get my stuff fixed. My friends will go there too because I keep raving to them how great this place is. The staff were friendly and attentive, and bought my fried mac book without any problems, at the same quote we discussed over the phone. Although it was worth hardly more than the power source to me, the book was seven years old. I guess you can find a use for anything... They did not have much of a store front, and seem to specialize in parts and repairs. I would go here to donate your used bits and bytes to them, even if they can't purchase or fix what you have. When your electronics need repairs I would see if they can't fix the bits that get broken while you're saving your bytes too. This morning at 5 am my laptop stopped working. It's a big writing weekend, our IT guy is away and I couldn't reach his replacement. Serenity now! Serenity NOW! Since Google is our friend, I enquired and The Hackery was recommended, via Yelp. I called and received good problem-solving over the phone. I arrived and received good assistance and a temporary solution to the problem which will get me operational until my IT guy can look at the laptop. For their trouble, they charged me $5 for a part. The whole thing took maybe 10 minutes. I will be back if/when this type of circumstance occurs again...I'm adding The Hackery to the referral list and will recommend highly. Fantastic. We had a seriously run down 2008 iMac, took it in and told them what was going wrong. After diagnosing it as needing a new graphics card, we were quoted $300 for the work and the part replacement, but here's the cool part, they said they were going to try to get that cost lower. (Previously, when inquiring with other professionals, we were told it would be the entire logic board and quoted at $900.) We were that it would be done in a week, and in reality they called us three days later to come pick it up. And then when we went to pick it up, they only charged $150 plus tax! So pleased. I called about 3 old hard drives I couldn't open, and was quoted $40-45 to take a look what was on them, advising me to come mid-afternoon when it was less busy so the tech could look at it when I was there. They seemed nice, a friend who lives nearby recommended, and I took the chance, even though the shop is about an hour's drive for me. When I arrived, the same fellow (who remembered talking to me on the phone a few days prior) said they'd charge the minimum $90, I had to leave the hard drives for 5-6 business days, and they would charge me $250 if there was any data to recover (even though I just wanted to see what was there). I discussed our phone call, he had no explanation or excuse, and didn't care either that I drove a whole hour based on what he told me. When I left with my hard drives, he insulted my intelligence further and said, "Have a great day!", even he though I just told him what an inconvenience it was. I will never return, and am writing this review to share this experience, which is "you can't trust what The Hackery says on the phone". I regret the two hours of driving, and am really choked that in today's world consumers with business to bring to small enterprises are treated so badly. When my partner stepped on my laptop, and cracked the touchscreen, I brought it here, because of the positive reviews. Rather than "repair" the screen, which would be difficult and expensive, they promised to find a replacement for a good price. They did. They replaced the piece for about half of what I thought it would cost. Fast forward, and months later, I was having a bitch of a time with a jumping cursor. So frickin' annoying! Took it back, and they looked, and disabled the touch screen, thinking that might have something to do with it. They suggested I take it home, and if it didn't fix the problem, bring it back. Problem still not fixed, so went back, they re-enabled the touch screen and tried updating my touch pad software - problem solved! What really impressed me, was that even though there were people in line behind me, Jax did it while I waited, and didn't charge me. So much appreciated!! (I did return with cookies!), but, his attention to my problem, his generosity with his knowledge, and his obvious passion for what they do, all add up to awesome customer service. I've tried many computer repair places in my years in Vancouver, and The Hackery beats them all by miles. They are: Skilled Friendly Attentive Community-minded Interested in saving you money if possible Fast Very, very reasonably priced I've come here for two computer repairs and one purchase. The first repair cost $1850 less than we were quoted by two other data-recovery places, and the second repair they did while I watched, and then they didn't even charge me (it was a silly thing on my part: one piece of bloatware was slowing my computer to a crawl). The purchase was an amazing deal. They sold me a 15", 2011 MacBook Pro for $750. When the touchpad proved to be defective, they took it in the next day and had it replaced - at no cost - in under an hour. They also took a moment to correct a problem I'd asked them about. It had nothing to do with the computer itself (it was an issue with Chrome), but he looked it up and found the fix, and got rid of an annoying pop-up for me. Highly recommended. read more

I have an older MacBook Pro that I'm having some hardware problems with. I called The Hackery, spoke to David, who was absolutely amazing. He took the time to listen to what the issues were and gave me his opinion. He then took time to discuss my options and his advice, knowing that by doing so I would most likely not repair my computer. I will say, he sure knows customer service and his business and this is the only place I will ever go for future repairs. Even though you don't need an appointment to go in, if you aren't sure if it's fixable before making the trip, call and talk to them. Solid work for low cost. I brought a Macbook with an SSD to install and with a malfunctioning keyboard. The service was prompt - they under-promised and over-delivered because it was done really quickly. (note: the Mac guy said he was off Saturdays and they are closed Mondays, so you want to come in early in the week). Because they have a lot of used parts and components for sale, they managed to replace my keyboard with a perfectly working used one. Their suggestion - I thought I was just gonna have to pony up for a new keyboard. The overall cost, parts + labor, was probably less than just buying the replacement keyboard from Apple, let alone installing it (the SSD they installed was bought by me elsewhere so its price was not included). Another way to think of it is that people who deal as much with old/used computers as The Hackery seems to do have to be a lot better at diagnostics than the guys who only manage to dump out old parts and swap in new ones. So even if you are servicing newer equipment, it's good to know they know the repair trade. read more

Upon entering The Hackery, my first impression was that this place has a very simple layout: a big table for diagnostics/cash register on the left hand side and products available for purchase on the right hand side (old monitors, cables, keyboards, etc.). The employees seem like they're all high school/college buddies that opened a computer shop together - here's the twist: each one of them is friendly, attentive, fast! After reading the other reviews and looking at their website, I decided to give The Hackery a try since my Reverse Camera LCD Monitor (or so I thought it the was the monitor...) was no longer functioning. After the technician looked at the monitor, it turns out that the plug car adapter was malfunctioning not the monitor itself (major relief!) The technician was able to repair it in less than 5 minutes and only quoted $20 (compare that to buying an entirely new monitor system....). I'm happy that they were able to help me out even though it wasn't strictly a computer/electronics problem. Nonetheless, these guys know what they're doing but importantly, they know what they're doing and how to treat customers. Excellent work guys! read more

I spilled coffee on my laptop's keyboard, and was thinking maybe it was time for a new computer.... I emailed The Hackery and talked with Brian, the owner. He said it was likely something that could be fixed, especially since it wasn't a spill of HOT liquid. I took it to the shop at Victoria and Pandora and Brian signed it in. When I said I was anxious about how long I'd be with out it, he said it shouldn't take long. Later the same day he phoned to say that he'd checked it carefully and only the keyboard had been effected; so he'd it cleaned up and I could come pick it up. What a lovely surprise! Brian was a great fellow to deal with, polite, respectful and patient. I'm now a BIG fan of The Hackery. A lot of people feel the same way, so they usually have a lineup of folks waiting for repairs. Like an idiot, I spilled some beer on my macbook pro keyboard. I took it to these guys the next day. They were upfront about the possible damages that could have occurred, and the potential cost involved in cleaning the logic board, or replacing parts as needed. I go to pick it up a few days later only to find out that there were no damages (they just had to give it a thorough dry-out in the lab). The best part? They charged me $0. My visit to The Hackery was quite strange. Depending on your point of view it was either a bad experience or a good one, so I will explain. I called to tell them about my problem (my computer basically wasn't working at all) and they were quite helpful on the phone, trying to estimate what the problem was and answering my questions as best they could. I brought it in and quoted me for what they believed would be a hard drive replacement (it was indeed this problem). They basically quoted me for one hour of service (that's the minimum) and the cost of the new drive, which sounded fine. I asked them to also clean the inside out for me which they didn't mind doing as well. A few days later I came to pick up my repaired computer. The clerk told me the price and it was for one hour of service.. So I was nervous because it wasn't marked down that they had replaced the drive. But he said it was fixed, so I took his word and took it home. It was indeed fixed, and they had recovered my most important files and put them on the new drive for me. Then I discovered the optical drive was not functioning. I phoned them about it and they said it was most likely not plugged back in. He walked me through opening the computer and plugging the drive in myself. I was nervous about doing it myself but it worked. So I'm not sure how I should feel. It seemed like they were quite disorganized with my job, including forgetting to plug a component back in. But on the other hand, I got a diagnosis, a hard drive replacement, file recovery and a cleaning for 67 dollars. I feel like I should be weary of them, yet I feel like I would take my computer back there if I needed it repaired again because I think they know computers. read more

I've come here several times and given this shop quite a fair share of business. The last time I came, the owner told us he'd be with us in a few minutes after he ordered dinner and helped out another customer. We ended up waiting almost a full hour just to be helped, with no notice whatsoever. When we asked about why we had to wait so long, he basically said it had nothing to do with him because the customer he was helping only should've taken 5 minutes and he hadn't eaten lunch. Just a brief mention during the hour we waited that he would be awhile would have been greatly appreciated since we could've just come back another time. Also, not feeding yourself shouldn't be an excuse to give shitty customer service. Definitely not coming back. They clearly see no value in their customers, or in their customers' time. read more
