On a recent road trip to Mendocino County, mainly for the purpose of exploring Mendocino wines, we were delighted to find Patrona. The small town of Ukiah, when first approached, didn't seem like a mecca for fine dining establishments, nor is it, the exception being Patrona. The town does have it's own charming attributes, especially the downtown "historic" area, which is where Patrona is located. The wines by glass list featured primarily local Mendocino wines, as did the by the bottle list. Also there were many organic wines as well, which the area is known for. Upon arrival we were greeted by our server and she looked after us with up most care and enthusiasm. As we browsed the menu, and then had questions, her knowledge of the menu items was excellent. For a starter, my husband and I decided to share an order of kale and goat cheese ravioli. Our server told us it was house made, and it was superb as well as beautiful - with strips of green and orange in the pasta dough. For our main course, we both opted for fish. My sole picatta was perfect, cooked so it was still moist and the complement of nutty brown butter and capers just increased the complexity of the flavors. It was served simply with french fries, which were crisp (and hand cut according to our server) and some fresh vegetables. My husband had a quite a large bowl of fresh mussels and clams, served in a seafood broth with garlic and parsley. He loved it. Our server suggested a side of fresh sauteed greens as an accompaniment and brought another basket of their house made foccacia with out even being asked for it and simply said "for the juices". We were both very pleased and impressed. A wonderful creme brulee for dessert was a perfect ending. A day passed and we were headed back south on 101 and decided to see if Patrona was opened for lunch, we lucked out. Totally different crowd and menu during the day. Lots of lunching ladies (quite a few enjoying martinis) and because the courthouse is right next door, lots of suited attorney looking types. The lunch menu is scaled down to casual but still featured a couple of the evening selections. There are burgers, sandwiches, some creative salads and pizzas. I decided on the pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw, served with those wonderful french fries. The sauce on was a lovely combination of spicy and slightly sweet. My husband decided to try their Gorgonzola, port soaked fig and walnut pizza. Unusual, but the flavors just seem to meld perfectly. Along with a $5 house salad, he was very happy. The owner of the restaurant came by our table briefly just to check if we were happy. It 's nice to see a owner take a true interest in what the customers have to say. Next time we are up this way, we will make it a point to stop into Patrona. The locals are fortunate. read more
