The winemaker is one of the best of this area, if not the best if one considers my opinion. Paso Port, Pendrays destilary, Per Caso wines are all side by side, same location, all branches of the family business. I am a fan of all his products and so is my significant other. I like his wines, Nicholas likes his liquor and his fortified wines. Fortified wines that could win a competition with Ports from Portugal, in my point of view...I have been there e me desculpem os portugueses...we have our own here! It is a small winery, run by the husband and wife and one or two assistants. I would call to make an appointment! They also have great gatherings with good quality pairings at times. If they are offering one of their parties make sure to sign up in advance. They fill up quickly. The place is very nice, views of mountains, vineyards and trees. Simply stated Pasoport is the ports label, Percaso is the wine label and Penray's is the spirits label. A good port is hard to find. As a Napa valley lover, my heart belongs to Prager. Luckily, I have a big heart and an open mind because PasoPort is an incredible find Their ports are less syrupy than Prager and the new rose port is a total gem. Beware. The drive is a little tricky, so look for the pinup girl signs. The tasting area is small, but gorgeous. We were one of two parties there and the woman helping us was very kind. The tasting fee is $15, but is refundable with a two bottle purchase. It was our first time, so we opted to taste the port and the spirits (warning: the grappa is hella strong!). I would have liked to do their club, but it's a lot of port for us. Maybe next time we'll try the regular wine and rethink the wine club. read more

Came here after asking at another winery if there was a place around with a good port wine. So glad we ventured up the road and made this a stop while in Paso. They have a full tasting that includes 4 very different port wines! While my husband and I said we would never join a winery that we couldn't visit all the time...this place was where the rule was broken! Nestled in a picturesque location my wife and I were greeted by the friendly and knowledgeable staff. The selections we sampled were outstanding, especially the Rose port. The staff explained that the port's pinup girl labels were designed by a local artist and named based on the characteristics of the port. It was playful and fun. A nice place with plenty of potential to stand out as a port producer amid a sea of wineries, but I'll be honest: we weren't a big fan of most of the ports and liqueurs that they had when we visited. The tastings were attractively presented in nice glassware and the price was fair. My favorites were the white port and the walnut liqueur. All of the ports though lacked some of the velvety mouthfeel that you get with even a standard Sandeman's Ruby. They tasted more thin and wine-ish than any other port that I've had before. The main issue with the liqueurs was how one-note most of them were; my favorite liqueurs generally have several botanicals and other interesting ingredients alongside the main flavor, but these reminded me more of flavored vodka. I guess they'd be good to mix drinks with, but by themselves they were disappointing. The "pin-up girl" theme was... somewhat amusing, but a bit of a tangent. I really would have liked more details about the port itself--how it's made, more about each of the wines that went into the port, comparisons to the wine-making process, etc. Maybe this would be a good opportunity for more literature and education on port itself more generally. Somewhat out-of-the-way but rustically pleasant location, nice cats, and an adventurous drive up the driveway to get there. read more

This place is amazing. Not only that but when I tell people I'm coming here anywhere in Paso Robles, they all know the owners and love them. I don't think I have heard so much about anybody in the valley. I am a huge fan of ports and they do a great job. They also do regular wine and distillates. You won't regret the experience going here. Their staff is also very friendly, probably an extension of the owners' friendliness. I sadly had to stop being a member at Pasoport because I am leaving the state. There is a single lane drive on the way to the winery, but as long as you take it slow you should be all right. read more

I swanned in to buy port for my teen's school auction without ever having been in before. The ladies working that they were as obliging as one could ever hope. One young lady explained to me the different kinds of port they had, what their flavor notes are, vineyard and grape info et cetera. We had a group vacation last week and planned a stop in Paso Robles. We selected Paso Port/Penray's Distillery for one of our stops because we were super curious about their different styles and varieties of port and spirits. This ended up being my favorite of our stops. This place is a little hard to find, since it's off the beaten path and up a hill, and signage is elusive and easy to misinterpret (add arrows to your big signs guys!). The tasting room is small and only accommodates about 6-8 people at a given time, and we were exceedingly lucky, as a party of 6, to drop in at a time when we were the only visitors (make reservations if you have a group or are at all worried about a crowd, you don't want to miss this place). Upon arrival, we were welcomed in and seated and given the rundown of our tasting options. We selected 3 port tasting flights and 2 spirits tasting flights for our group, all flights were modestly priced, with costs being waived with purchases of bottles. The port flight is a curated selection of 5 ports, and every one of them is different and delightful. The spirits flight includes 5 tastings of 6 available options. Our hostesses were lovely and briefly explained the selections and the process of port making, what sets this winery apart, and offered tasting notes on their wares. Then they graciously took a step back and let us enjoy ourselves at our own pace, always within earshot to answer questions or offer additional information. It was my favorite kind of tasting, offering lots of room for genuinely enjoying each sip, while still having plenty of expert knowledge on hand to appreciate the craftsmanship of the product. I enjoyed each and every port on the tasting list, but standouts for me were the Violetta with it's lively fruitiness, the Noel (a holiday port that manages to taste just like it belongs in a Dickensian Christmas story), and their Angelica, a white port that conjures up elderflowers and gooseberries and green apples, with honeydew melon and orange muscat grapes and has all the charms of a beautiful spring day while still being elegant and refined and utterly different than any other posrt I've tasted. They also offer a very good Tawny port that has all of the wonderful bruleed sugar and raisin notes of a good tawny port, but without the oversweetness and syrupy mouthfeel that some tawnys suffer from. I would have bought a bottle of each if I'd have had the budget for it! Of the spirits, all were good, but a couple were exceptionally good. Their apple brandy is one of the best I've ever had and evokes the taste and aroma of rosy skinned apples at the height of the late summer harvest. The Amaro is a joy: warm orange notes with a hint of bitter almond, a perfect warmer for a winter night. But the absolute star of the menu was the Walnut liqueur, which is not to be missed. In a tasting of favorites, this was everyone's FAVORITE taste, sweet and nutty, with a depth to it that offers the aroma of walnut both as woodsy, toasty aromatic and sweet pastry notes. Wonderful stuff! Prices are very fair and the staff are wonderful. Their wine club seems pretty good too if you are a regular drinker of port. As an art nerd, I really loved the label art for both Paso Port, which features beautiful retro pinups that embody the characteristics of each variety, and Pendray's, which reminds me a bit of antique English apothecary labels and whose bottles are wax-sealed with coordinating wax colors. Highly recommended and not to be missed if you are a fan of port or brandy. read more

What a great location! I didn't realize Paso Robles had so many cute lil' distilleries. We were eager to try out Paso Port. Warning: There is a one way road leading up to the tasting room, drive safely. The main room is for port and wine tastings. The room to the side is for tasting the liqueurs (silly prohibition laws in California don't allow them to share a location). However you can mix and match tastings of wine, ports, and liqueurs. The staff here are so sweet! They are knowledgeable and take their time to explain each sample. I love the pin up themed names of each port. The art work is so creative. The variety of their ports is great. There is a port for each taste here. I still think Zin Alley had my favorite Paso Robles Port but this place is a very close second. read more

We had visited PasoPort during another Paso trip and had previously enjoyed it so we decided to head back after our pick up party at L'Aventure. While the wines are decent enough, and the ports are fantastic, the service definitely left something to be desired. We were one of only 2 groups tasting while we were there and getting the girl who was pouring for us to engage was a struggle. We asked questions about the wine and received short answers. I'm not sure if she just didn't know a whole lot about the wine or didn't want to be there but it didn't make for the best experience. We still left with some bottles because they are good, but the experience definitely could have benefited from someone who acted like they wanted to be there. read more

Amazing ports! I've had the ports from the other wineries in the area and thus far, PasoPort is still my favorite to the point that signing up for the membership was a no brainer for me! Very impressive port-style wines. You will find this winery on top of a hill, with a great view. Their wines are named for women (like hurricanes...lol) They had white ports, zinfandel ports, syrah ports, muscat ports. I went down the line and tasted them all. I was very pleased that there was no tasting fee. I took home a bottle of 2009 Brandi Zinfandel Port. Be sure if you are going to go by this place that this is the last stop of your day - as your palate will be wrecked from the sweet finish. Our wine guide was cute and friendly. For me, this is a great winery. The wines are mature and have depth compared to some in and around Paso Port. I liked the Iberian, the Zin and the BDX. I preferred the BDX and the person with me enjoyed the ports. This is one of the best in the area. I like wine and visit Napa often. This winery is on par with any Napa wine. read more

I've been to my fair share of wineries, but this was probably my favorite. For years, I have contemplated joining a wine club, but I never really liked all of the wines I tasted at a single winery.
