So right after I arrived in Austin yesterday, I took the Airport Flyer bus to downtown to meet my friend for Happy Hour. After a long travel day and all the chaos of airline travel, I for sure needed a drink. The ambiance here is nice, lighting is a little dark. The menu reminds me of Animal Restaurant in LA and a gastropub. Oh yeah, the great thing was everything was half off! So to start off:
Siberian Donkey - absolut peppar, ginger beer, lime
- the absolut peppar (pepper flavored vodka) and ginger beer really give it a distinct taste, sort of medicinal tasting but it was good and a unique flavor to the palate and it quenched my thirst.
Next we ordered the:
crispy calamari, smoked paprika, aioli
- this was a really nicely fried dish, the calamari were not thickly coated with breading but it was very lightly dusted. The flavor of the smoked paprika gave it a very similar tasting to the Chinese style fried calamari with spicy salt. The aioli was super fresh with the lemon juice... very refreshing paired with the crisp calamari.
fried pork ravioli
-this dish was the first thing that I saw that really captured my attention. Ever since I went to St. Louis in 2006, I haven't been able to find a good toasted ravioli (deep fried). This dish was small but, the pasta dough was made perfect and when fried, it reminded me of a deep fried wonton but a little thicker... it was not too thick and not too thin but you could definitely tell it was pasta that was made there. Also the pork was pulled pork and braised, they do not skimp they loaded that baby up with the pulled pork. They topped the ravioli with some pecorino romano and some micro greens.
lump crab fritters, sauce ravigote
-perfectly fried balls of good goodness. light panko coating on the outside and a pretty substantial amount of lump crab filing. Also served with the aoili.
cheeseburger
-my goodness, this burger was quite awesome. Cooked medium with a nice bun. Texas beef really makes all the difference. The beef was just lightly seasoned and there were lettuce, tomato and cheese. This burger was different from the other burgers I've had at Father's Office or Back Abbey in which they didn't have to add caramelized onion jam or balsamic vinegar on the greens. This burger was plain but it was s good one. This burger came out piping hot, as I bit into the burger, there was so much heat contained inside, I burned the roof of my mouth. The burger also came with a whole order of park side fries, this dish alone filled me up.
oyster platter
- great oysters from the gulf coast, each were distinct. some more briny than the others, some more plump. the oysters were served with 3 sauces, a spicy vinaigrette sauce, a cocktail sauce and horseradish.
I really enjoyed this restaurant, they really are doing something right. 1/2 of bar menu food and 1/2 off beer and cocktails Monday through Friday from 5-7 PM. The food was served hot, which means the chefs and servers really work together to push the food out right after it is cooked. One of the best parts of this meal is the price, which ended up being only $46, I'd definitely come back here again
