So I take full responsibility in my part of this story, so please don't think my negative review is because I'm faulting the store for my incompetence. I'm not. Also, I feel like I should put up front that if you don't read this lengthy diatribe that it ends with the owner telling me I should go ahead and sue him if I wanted to and telling me that he's going to file a police report against me because I supposedly have a loaner computer that he never, not once, in over a year, asked for back.
I brought my computer in for the free diagnostic as my roommate was really pleased with the service she received. We lived down the street, it was very convenient. The owner seemed very nice. I prefer to frequent the neighborhood-owned-&-operated businesses that rely on quality and customer service to survive rather than those big store techs who are paid $7.95 an hour or something else ungodly--and who can blame them for not caring? Anyway. I brought it in, was told they would call in a few days with a diagnostic. A few days passed and no word. I let it go for a week and finally went in after calling a few times with no response. I went in on the weekend and they didn't have it ready, "Come back in a few days." Hm. OK. I came back in a week and they said they THOUGHT my motherboard was busted, but they'd have to do the work on it to find out first. My luck that my $1300 Mac would have that. I asked how much it would be to repair. Something like $700.00 if the motherboard was busted, $300.00 if not, but I basically had to agree to the $700.00 repair as, if they opened it up and needed it and I didn't want to pay for it, I'd still be beholden to the $300.00 to open it up and would have a non-functioning computer. Yikes. Seeing my shock, the owner responded, well I can check in my other shop and see if I have a used part that will bring the price down a little. OK great, check on that. Called later that week, oh I have to check if my other shop has the part, in the meantime, drop in and I'll loan you a computer. Well that's sweet, thank you.
Got the loaner. Wouldn't hold a charge for very long--that's ok, it's free while they see if they find a part! I can stay next to a plug! But then I couldn't use anything on it because it was password protected by its last owner. Called the shop. No response. Called again because I needed this bad boy for work that I was going out of town for, got one of the office folk who said he'd contact the owner and let me know if they could get the password. I waited another day or so, called, no return--again. Seriously where are these people all day? Finally had to put that one in a drawer and go out and buy a new PC.
Before I went out of town, called and called. No response. Got working my 20 hour days (I work in film) and moved on with my life. They'll call if they have the part, right? They'll call because they want this computer back, right? NOPE.
Fast forward a year, when I'm finally back in town and life has slowed down and I open the drawer of discarded crap-mac, do the math and realize HOLY GOD it's been a year. Well, damn, I should have called them before now, that is TOTALLY my fault. But there's no way that nice man would just throw out my computer without calling, right?
Called the owner. After a first confusing yet cordial conversation, he called back to lay into me that he owned that computer after 60 days and he discarded it. He has phone records that he tried to contact me and that they sent me something in the mail because he was about to file a police report for stolen material because I never returned the loaner. WHAT. My LIFE is comprised of me holding onto my phone for dear life as it is the MAIN means of communication for work, and I never not once received any sort of mail. Also, that piece of crap that he is accusing me of stealing, and thus denying him a source of rental income, is UNUSABLE. And I told them that over a year ago, to no avail ("That computer is at least five years older than the one I gave to you for repair." "Well, now it's SIX years older thanks to you.). Also, sure I returned it. Just like you discarded my computer and didn't chop it for parts. He claims if I called he would know and would have gladly mailed my computer back to me. Huh, that wasn't an option ever before. "Well you didn't communicate with us at all." I mean, just serious lies to cover for the fact that I had been waiting for a return phone call about one damn piece of equipment and after numerous attempts, had to give up, but I want my property back. But, it's gone.
After I got upset because all I really wanted from that computer was my hard drive with all my work on it, irreplaceable photos & music, he told me that there was nothing he could or would do and I could go ahead with whatever recourse I wanted, but he wanted my updated address because he is going to file that police report for stolen items. Won't even give me a donation slip. Awesome. read more
