I was having a moment last week after consecutive days of leading returning staff orientation and professional development for our therapists before the start of the school year. I toyed with ideas of the most non nutritious food to order because I felt I deserved it. Something comforting. I decided on a Philly cheesesteak and fries. This was my first time ordering from Pappa Geno's, but I have considered it before. I was going to order from Miller's Cafe because I like theirs, but I get much more from Pappa Geno's. I like that their cheesesteaks are traditional footlong size on a soft hoagie. The Pappa Geno's steak and cheese was filled with thinly sliced steak, melted cheese and mayo. I added mushrooms to mine. They wrap it up in foil paper to keep it nice and warm. If you're really hungry, you can eat the whole thing. If not, you can eat half of it and save the other half for later. The meat was seasoned and on the moist side compared to others. I've been to both rival cheesesteak places (Geno's and Pat's) in Philly, and I thought this was a nice alternative for Houston to have. I think I still prefer the thinly sliced steak flavor from Miller's Cafe. The side of fries are crispy with almost a breading on the exterior. Same fries as Piper's Cantina, if you've ever been. I'm not that into breaded fries like these, but it was good and was a large portion. The sandwich itself is on the pricier side but a decent portion. I'd like to try their other Philly cheesesteak options or add hot oil peppers like the Wicked Philly. Pappa Geno's is a great option if you want a more authentic Philly cheesesteak fix. read more

The nearest Pappa Geno's to me. I was in the area and decided to grab a bite and remembered Pappa Geno was in the heights. I have not had a Philly cheesesteak in quite a while, I was a bit excited. The place is next to a gas station. The place looks a bit run down in and outside, but do not let that fool you, it was a pack house since it was lunch hour. I quickly looked at the menu and decided to order #4, the wicked philly. If you like a spicy kick to your sandwich, this is the way to go! The Italian 'hot' oil peppers give it a hint of spiciness. The gentleman took my order, but I wished he stated that ordering a #4 was just the sandwich and it was not a combo meal. Don't make the same mistake I did.. order the fries and drink. Went through the drive thru in Jersey Village. The only way to receive service is drive thru as there is no inside dinning option. Sandwiches are pretty good. The issue is they ask for a tip from DRIVE THRU in addition to a 3% fee for using a credit card. From drive thru?? I don't recall other fast food chains asking for a tip from their drive thru. $16 dollars for a 9 inch sandwich. For that price I could've went to Jersey Mike's or Charleys and gotten a bigger sandwich with more fillings. Not a good look. read more

As someone from the Tri-State area, my cheesesteak standards are high and unfortunately, Papa Geno's didn't quite hit the mark. The cheesesteak was okay: the meat was decent, but the bread just didn't remind me of home. A great cheesesteak lives and dies by the roll, and this one didn't carry that authentic Philly bite or chew I was hoping for. Now, the real standout? The onion rings. Crispy, golden, and perfectly seasoned they were easily the highlight of the meal. If you're craving a solid side, they nail it here. What I believe a top 3 cheesesteak in Housotn. The food is perfectly priced and extremely reasonable especially considering it's basically in the heights. Service is great and friendly. I do wish they had their bread be a bit more crunch but that's more personal preference than anything. The board could use a face lift. Still 5 star worthy. read more

Best Cheese steak I've had so far in town. Place was empty around 1pm. My order came fairly quick, but I've noticed the prices are higher. 2 sandwiches for 25.00. Restaurant was clean and tidy with plenty of space to enjoy your lunch. I'll be back within the year. read more

Pappa Geno's is a neighborhood gem that serves up quality, comfort food at reasonable prices. The star of the menu is the variety of cheesesteaks. They also have burgers and fries, plus cheese sticks. The place has counter service and plenty of seating. The inside has an old school, diner feel with barstools and tables. The Philly I ordered was huge, with lots of meat and cheese. You could easily make it two meals. I also got an order of cheese sticks, which came with ranch. They were ooey and gooey. Pappa Geno's has an amazing steak sandwich that will definitely have me coming back for more! The flavors were spot-on, and the sandwich was cooked perfectly. It's exactly the kind of comfort food you crave. The only downside is that the place felt a little run down, and the tables were kind of dirty, which took away from the overall experience a bit. But honestly, the food is so good that it makes up for it. Had I not ran into this place on Yelp I would have never gone here. Located in a abandoned gas station, looks sketchy from outside. Inside is a blast of orange and not very welcoming. There were no patrons sitting down, everyone who came in got their orders to go. So we did the same. The staff was sweet though. Ordered two #2's, fries and drink for $33, pricey. The philly cheesesteaks were yummy, cheese wiz was good. We've had actual cheesesteaks from Philly, and these sandwiches were close to that level. My only gripe is the bread. It was barely toasted, it was the missing factor. It needed a bit of a crunch, it needs to be a bit more toasted. Besides that, the rest was delish! read more

While the wifey was working I decided to take my moped in for an oil change when I this cheesesteak place called "Papa Genoa". Since it was lunch time, who can resist the chance to have an authentic Philadelphia cheesesteak? So I walk in and everything I know about my life in Texas changed! "Fly Eagles Fly", "Rocky!, Rocky!, Rocky!", "Booing Santa Claus!", "F*** Philly parking authority!", "Wit Wiz!"...... After entering this establishment and eating a Smothered Philly cheesesteak all these expressions suddenly made sense! You want to eat a burger or bbq? Forget about it! Try a cheesesteak and you too can speak Philadelphian! I also noticed that they serve chicken strips and burgers here, but come on man! If you order any of that crap here, just punch yourself in the face and turn in your man card. I don't visit my Jewish grandma and ask for her to make me a bacon cheeseburger! (Just fyi that is not considered kosher food) In closing, I must tell yous guys "The parking authority is a scam to steal your money!" Easily the best authentic cheesesteak meal in Houston. Sorry that the other locations have all failed. The original location remains open in a rather shady parking lot off of 19th St. But the customers and counter people are all swell people. Don't disregard it because of the messy location. I love this place, have gotten it several times and it is excellent every time and always right! I called recently to ask if they could change the cheese on the disco fries to regular cheese to make like a poutine fry and they did! It was for an uber order as I was sick, they were very nice and helped me place the order to make sure I got them right. read more

Came here after it was highly recommended by my coworker. He wasn't lying! This place is soooo underrated. Best Philly cheesesteak I've ever had, HANDS DOWN! My new favorite lunch spot! I ordered their papa genos steak and cheese (best seller) and added mushrooms to it. A-MA-ZING. This place really knows what theyre doing. I got the meal with fries and a drink. The fries are underwhelming and the sandwich itself was big enough to fill me up so I'd skip them next time. Also, they are pretty fast despite the lunch rush. Peeps. The number 2 has the Whiz. That is a legit Philly cheesesteak. My sandwich today was more like a 3.5. Had the number 1. I swear the bread is not the same as the last many many years of eating there. The owner lady disagrees but it is not as crispy and mouth watering as before. Don't let the location or the exterior deter you from going. I was craving a Philly cheesesteak sandwich, and unfortunately all of the Texadelphia's near me have closed down, so I hopped onto Yelp and decided to check out this place based on reviews. There was plenty of parking, and the place was completely empty, which was another concern, but we were committed to checking it out. We met some friends there and dined in, but what I realized after being there for 10 or 15 minutes is that a lot of customers order to go. I got the Wicked, because I love Italian hot oil peppers, and it was really tasty (though a bit salty for me). It's a fairly large sandwich, 9 inches was what I was told, so it was plenty for me and my nine-year-old son to share. My husband got the same thing and couldn't finish it. The portion of fries, on the other hand, is small, so you definitely need to order a side for each person. Service was good - staff was nice but it took awhile to get our food (or maybe they just forgot about our extra order of fries and made it after we reminded them?). We would definitely come back next time we crave cheesesteak sandwiches! read more

Our server seemed to be very nice to a couple tables around us but not so much with us. She also appeared to be the only staff person in the restaurant out on the floor. I overheard other people calling her Shandy and it turned out she was the owner! I was appalled! As a female, I'm passionate about supporting other females and women-owned businesses, especially minority women. But I do expect a certain level of professionalism and to be treated with respect. I didn't find that at Shandy's :( My mom provided feedback to the owner after our meal and the owner indicated to my mom that my mom was the only person to ever give her this type of feedback. After reading other reviews, it appears that I am not the only one who has been made to feel this way.

He was very attentive and made sure orders were moving and getting out to customers. When I followed up on my order (about 20+ minutes in), he let me know there were about 9-10 subs ahead of mine due to a lot of online orders. Once I got my food, I thanked him and let him know next time I'll definitely be ordering online. If you're planning to grab lunch and not dine in, I highly recommend ordering ahead to save time. Now, the food... the sub was 10/10 amazing. I got the Jamaican Red Buffalo Chicken. Highly recommend. The only thing I want to point out is there was a guy working with bell peppers who came to the front line and started handling food for customers. He had on gloves and headphones, but when a customer asked him a question, he used his gloved hand to move his headphones, then went right back to handling food without changing gloves.
