Came to this place and ordered a Gordita de azada , so they bring it 35minutes later, cold, and still raw. So I'm expecting a Gordita to be crispy and it's super raw. Worse place I've ever ate . Papi's is NOT service dog friendly. I was denied service and threatened by the owner's brother when I took my REGISTERED SERVICE DOG in on February 21, 2010. I was denied service, verbally threatened by the kitchen manager of the night, who obviously doesn't know the federal laws. His actions resulted in my having to take an ambulance to the hospital that night. I am a disabled veteran with a service dog. This place should be boycotted at all costs. They don't care about their customers or if the physically harm them or break federal laws. That night I ordered a carne asada burrito and a fish taco. The owner's brother (the individual running the restaurant that night. Wanted me to wait in the rain and cold because I am a disabled veteran with a service dog. Boy, has this place gone down hill. I'd give this place 6 months tops. Dated 1/20/10....let the clock start ticking. I've been going here for a while, but have seen it slide so far downhill, I have decided to jump off. It is obvious that this place is running on a thin margin and cutting corners and inflating costs is what it's about now. The salsa bar scores the 1 star, but with the ridiculous charges, day-care use facility, and dirty dirty facilities, this place has no business being near the square anymore. Papi's used to be the best place to get your Mexican food fix. The last time I was in Paso Robles I was craving Papi's, but unfortunately it did not satisfy my cravings! They no longer have their liquor license, or patio seating so I could not enjoy a nice cold corona with my food outside people watching. They changed some of their menu and my shrimp cocktail was just not as good as it once was! BUMMER! Not too mention a couple kids running around and hanging on the walls! Or do you want an awesome authentic ma&pa hole in the wall that's dishing up pinto beans and Mexican rice specialties like no ones business... Go to Fish Gaucho if you want the glamour, come to Papi's if you're really really hungry. I called in my order on a Sunday afternoon and it took exactly 15 minutes (what she quoted me). OK, I've got to say something. Judging from the one time I ate here a little over a week ago, the food is awesome. Fresh ingredients, made to order, great salsa bar. However for me the problems simply outweigh these positives. As many others have said, it takes way too long to get food here, especially if you're limited to a lunch hour or less. It took around a half an hour for two gorditas to come out of the kitchen, and there were hardly any other tables occupied in the place. Others have also made comments indicating the service was rude, and judging from what I just experienced I would tend to agree. I just called hoping to order lunch to go. I figured calling ahead was wise from my previous experience; Even their menu says "Please call ahead for take out orders" (found a picture of it online). So I was a little taken aback when I called, it rang for a half-ring, and then the line was disconnected. I figured oh well, they dropped the phone or pushed the wrong button or whatever, and called back. This time, it rang three times and was picked up by an answering machine with the default message. Irritating. I double checked the phone number on another site online, waited a few minutes and called back: answering machine! So, Papi's ALMOST had another loyal customer, which, from last time, it looks like they could seriously use. Advice to "Papi": During lunch hour, if the phone rings, it's probably someone who wants to order food from your establishment. If you can't take the call at the moment, at least pick up the phone and ask if the caller can hold! I would have held on for a bit. It would have been way better than being hung up on. Torta Ahogada. My favorite torta in CA. Maybe favorite sandwich. I've been coming to this place for over 15 years, and nothing has changed (that is good, in my opinion). The salsa bar rocks. It's easy to get to from the freeway so passers by should stop in. Is it because of the location that it gets such raves? Some locals recommended this to us when we were visiting Paso Robles. Coming from LA I did not want Mexican but I was outvoted. The fish and shrimp tacos were covered in chunks of iceberg lettuce and a mix of cheddar and monterey jack cheese...not even trying to be authentic. I love salsa bars but the pico de gallo had been sitting so long it did not taste fresh. As people mentioned the service is super slow. We had a large group and the wait was incredibly long. Felix is the coolest cat ever (sorry, couldn't resist- ppl under 30 will not get it ;) Seriously, that dude is so cool that I would go hang out at his restaurant even if it wasn't the best in town. Thankfully, it's not only the best in town, but possibly in the county (at the very least it's the best in north county). Great guacamole (please pronounce it correctly- hint, it's a soft "g"), incredible salsa bar, tremendous chile colorado (seriously, it's bomb), and just the nicest service in town. After all the reviews, we were looking forward to this place. Unfortunately our lunch was pretty mediocre. I ordered a chile relleno and an enchilada. The chile relleno had several issues - it wasn't de-seeded, had minimal cheese and tasted like it was fried in old oil and was really greasy. Bummer! The enchilada was fine, but greasy as well. My husband ordered the pork burrito and while it was tasty, the pork was so salty (and I like salt). The tortilla was grilled though, which was nice. The salsas were solid - spicy and fresh, and the people were nice, so maybe we ordered the wrong thing? read more

I have come here often with my boyfriend and the food is great but what's concerning is non of the workers are wearing masks!! A pandemic is going on and every food service place the workers are required to wear them due to health safety. Until they start taking COVID seriously this will be my last visit. BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN PASO ROBLES I have been to the other mexican restaurants in Paso and honestly, nothing can compare. They make the food fresh to order (so yes a wait will be involved but it is worth it). Their chips (also freshly made to order) and their salsa bar (salsa made fresh daily) are to die for. Their pricing is incredibly affordable and much cheaper than other nearby mexican restaurants (and so is their quality). In my opinion, they are the most authentic in town as well. Try the carne asada burrito "wet" with salsa verde, guac and sour cream. BIG portions. ** There is seating in the restaurant but you order at the window and then wait for your name. For the money I certainly cannot complain. If you're not looking to spend 25 bucks for lunch in downtown Paso your choices are getting slim, everything new seems to want to be more pretentious than the last. My meal was cooked by Papi himself, to order. Chile relleno was nice, fresh, and with a nice kick to it. Looked like a pasilla pepper but I'm no expert. I added a fish taco to the combo, nice quantity of fish which was freshly grilled, not breaded and fried. With a Coke I was at 12.50, I figure anyone can find a good expensive lunch but a proper good dive is a find. So as a critical cheapskate I was fully pleased. read more

I'm no expert of Mexican food...but Papis hit the spot. A friend of mine and I were driving from Los Angeles to San Jose and decided to stop by for lunch. Papi's was a perfect choice given it's distance from LA and San Jose. My friend and I both ordered the chicken enchiladas which is served with a side of rice and beans. The entire dish came out piping hot (although it took FOREVER) which cheese smothered over the top. I opted for the chicken enchiladas with the green sauce and it was delicious. The beans were probably cooked with lard and bacon grease...but they were so yummy (hey...it's not often that I take a road trip up north - I can afford a bit of lard). I do have to agree with the other yelp reviews in that I would have expected a little more of the salsa bar. Some of the salsas looked discolored, which was a sign that it had been sitting out for a while and wasn't fresh. Given the several hour drive ahead of me...with no good place to stop for a bathroom...I opted not to smother my dish with the salsa (when I normally would have). Overall...the food was pretty good. Portions here are HUGE. Prices are reasonable compared to nearby restaurants. I ordered the crab enchilada. The crab didn't taste fresh and the texture looked dull, which leads me to believe that it's canned crab. Next time, I'll try something else. Service is excellent though. read more
