I am a loyal panera member (don't you just love it when you suddenly have a free cookie on your panera card), but this panera is maddening in the mornings. From 7:30-8:30 am, there is a consistent 10-15 person line. They don't have all registers open. I ordered an egg white and cheese sandwich, then proceeded to go to the back of the shop to wait for it. It took a good 20 minutes. Meanwhile, I saw probably three sandwiches get thrown in the trash because someone filled the order wrong. There were also about two other customers next to me getting frustrated that their order was taking so long. My order was taking longer than expected because they were out of egg whites (as one of the workers behind the counter continually exclaimed but didn't seem to do anything about). I thought maybe someone was doing something about it, but apparently not, as she finally told us directly that there were no egg whites and asked whether or not we wanted a regular sandwich or continue to wait for the egg whites. Because I was already late at this point, I just went with the regular sandwich. What a waste of my life. read more

Long live Panera! Panera took over Lawson's, is next to a Cosi's, and down the block from a Starbuck's. But, there is no better sandwich and chill shop in Dupont. NONE~ Service: Quick and waitstaff find your table quickly with their electronic system. Space: They have a downstairs! You may not realize how spacious it is from just walking around in the 1st floor's order space, but it's comfortable and seats a wide range of people. On the weekends there's hardly anyone there -- and dare I say, I'd rather study or do side project research on my laptop from Panera's downstairs than Starbucks. Food: Better variety of sides and breads than any sandwich shop in the area. I like the mac and cheese side and all their soups. I recco the tomato soup. The only down side is that they only have one veggie panini, but on the upside, they have the best paninis! Thank goodness for Panera in Dupont. I was running out of places to eat for lunch that I don't get sick of. Sweet Green always has long lines and little seating. Cosi's doesn't have the food variety. Ok, I have to update this. I think I was dazed and over-excited that a Panera was opening just steps from my office. Now that they have settled in I have some additional comments. They are still packed at lunch time which I expect and the line at the register tends to move fairly quickly. Cashiers are still much friendlier than at other local lunch spots. However, the second line you wait in (for expedited food or coffee drinks) is awful. They are very unorganized and either or these can easily add another 15 mintues to the wait time. In my opinion waiting 15 minutes for a latte that tastes mildy burnt after waiting 20 minutes in line to order said latte is a little ridiculous. In all, I like the soup at Panera and the staff is very friendly but they need to improve the organization at lunch time (and breakfast really). read more

I love Panera - as far as I'm concerned it's one of the best "fast food" places out there. Today I went for breakfast, and I was craving some sort of egg and bacon combination, so I knew I would be satisfied at Panera. I've had the artisan sandwiches (is that what they're called?) before ... the one's on ciabatta bread. Those are good, but they're $4.19 and not very large. Today I noticed the asiago, bacon, egg, and cheese bagel on the menu for only $4.59 and was sold. The asiago REALLY adds to the flavor of the sandwich. What even is asiago? Cheese? Who cares....I want it on every breakfast sandwich I ever eat from now on. The "eggs" were disappointing. Not scrambled, and there was distinct yellow v. white egg, which I didn't really like, but it was still very good for fast food eggs. Bacon was plentiful and crispy. Again, it's fast food bacon so my expectations were low. Bagel was the perfect amount of squishy. Sometimes I'm worried that ordering a hefty breakfast like bacon egg and cheese on a bagel is going to end up being way too big to even fit in my mouth and then the hard bits on the bagel are going to poke my mouth and it's going to all end badly. Not today! All in all, another great Panera experience. Will definitely go back here for breakfast. ALSO - I only just noticed today that they have a downstairs section!!! 2.5 I came for a meeting and dinner. There is plenty of space downstairs to sit, which is what I really liked. It's a great use of a basement! Such a good place to meet people for a meeting in Dupont. Food wise, this establishment does not reach the bar. Charging about as much as chop't or sweetgreen, I feel it's ingredients are lower quality and there are less of them. I couldn't eat the gorgonzola in my salad and so I asked to switch it out for a equal or lesser ingredient, and they said "no," only free ingredients... like cucumber, as opposed to almonds. I think that's bs. I did like that I could get bread or chips. The service was fine - brought food to the basement table without a problem. read more

Panera!!! I love you!!! When I came off the Metro that glorious day, and saw the sign announcing that you were moving into my neighborhood, I got giddy. As in, I ran home, jumped up and down in front of my boyfriend while chanting "We're getting a Panera!!!!!!" For weeks, I wandered by the location, watching as the ovens were installed and the bagel racks were put into place. And then finally, *finally* you opened...and I could get that bacon turkey bravo that I had been waiting weeks to get my hands on. Service is ok. Just ok...don't expect miracles here. What's important here is the sweet, sweet Panera menu lineup. I'm taking off a star for the change to "regular" bagels and "specialty" bagels, and the upcharge that has come along with that. Lame, Panera. Lame. There is plenty of seating downstairs, and I've never had to wait long to order, even at peak times. Even with all its flaws, it's just what the neighborhood needed. I really enjoy Panera. I work in Dupont, and since the North entrance of the Dupont Metro closed I haven't eaten there as much. But today, I made the journey, all 2.5 blocks, to get the very tasty Pink Ribbon bagel with plain cream cheese (toasted of course). The store smelled like burning (there was probably another fire from the bagel oven/toaster thing) and the line was crazy long. Strange for this Panera. But then I see the General Manager at the register and the workers running around like crazy. Everyone was very pleasant and courteous, and trying their hardest to get the food out as quickly as possible. It made me smile to see people who truly care about customer service, wanting all of their patrons to have a good experience. Within minutes of ordering, someone was asking what I ordered and then rushed off to find it. WOW! I was in no rush (already late for work) and made small talk with the lady who was making smoothies. With such a nice experience, I made sure to check-in on my Yelp app, and vowed to give them a nice review. And here it is! Well done Panera. You make the gloomiest of Friday's bearable, considering I have to go into work, and it's raining, and I have to go into work. Thank you. read more

Tried to get lunch at this Panera today, but they didn't have any baguettes. How can a bakery not have bread? Apparently the ovens were malfunctioning. The lady at the register gave me a free soda, though, so I guess that made up for it. Catering Review specifically - We ordered a lunch for 6 people to arrive at 12:30pm. The team called me in the morning to let me know they were at capacity for deliveries until 1:00pm so we changed our delivery time to 1:00pm. At 1:00pm nothing was delivered, I called them at 1:22pm and they said it would be 15 minutes...it's now 1:52pm and nothing has been delivered. I've called 3 times, was hung up on once, and more than anything, the food for a party of 6 is still not here. Great food, but this site's catering today is rather disappointing. read more

Of course, Paneras are not going to beat $$$ and $$$$ restaurants (so compare the 5 stars to other restaurants in this category, not across all restaurants), but as far as $ restaurants go, my experience here was so positive I felt compelled to write. The food was well prepared, with fresh kale in my Kale Chicken Salad and the right amount of lemon in my soup. However, the service really took it away. The cashier, Gabrielle, was very helpful and friendly in explaining how them bringing the food to me worked at a Panera (I'm used to picking up the food myself), and when I forgot to pick up my pecan braid and chai upstairs, the very helpful staff member (I think his name was Derza or Dezca) went up not once but twice to bring the items with a smile on his face and actually apologized for the inconvenience (though he of course had no need to apologize). Good food and great service in a fast casual establishment, whose sector is not renowned for service. Keep it up because it pays off. read more

As an employee of Panera Bread in my hometown, I was so excited when I heard that a Panera would be opening so close to the GWU campus! When I visited the place for the first time, I immediately thought, "wow." The service was PERFECT and the manager who rang up my order kindly explained to me the food delivery process because I had never heard of it before (it is not present at my Panera). I went downstairs to find a seat and was taken aback at how huge the place actually was! My food delivery was punctual and the food (U-Pick Two with tomato mozz panini and broccoli cheddar soup) was delicious, as I expected no less from Panera Bread. Wow... I normally wouldn't review national chain restaurants, but this Panera is something. I was strolling through DuPont and suddenly started craving a strawberry and poppyseed chicken salad at 5:30 pm. I dropped by and there were maybe three other people there, so there was absolutely no rush. What really stood out to me was the service! The cashier could tell that I was frazzled and having a rough and was so understanding. They brought out my food promptly and smiling. They offered me more water. And, when I was finished with my meal, a worker kindly offered to take my plates and put them away. I work across the street from this location and I come here whenever I forgot to pack my lunch. I'm a big fan of sandwiches and this place has always hit the spot for me. This location in particular has the friendliest staff I have ever encountered. They help you carry your food downstairs, bring you water, and are very attentive. A customer dropped his tray and his bowl broke all over the place and immediately the staff came together and didn't let any of the customers help to pick up pieces...they even brought the man a brand new salad even though he dropped his tray on the way to throw it in the trash because he was done eating. My sandwich rotation: 1. Chipotle Chicken Panini - perfect when I'm craving a hot sandwich with a little kick 2. Bacon Turkey Bravo - I love the sauce they put on this and I always ask for it on a baguette instead. Great on a hot hot day 3. The food here is so good. Where to start? The broccoli cheddar bread bowl is delicious...thanks Panera for letting me know how many unwanted calories I will be consuming by eating this delicious meal. No, but really, this is the perfect dish for a cold day. The chai and lemonade are the drinks I always get here. They are never disappointing. After work, I sometimes drop in here and grab a french toast bagel with honey walnut cream cheese for the next morning to treat myself. Let me tell you, it starts my morning off perfectly! I love this Panera because they have a spacious downstairs where you can take your time eating. I was disappointed though because they didn't have my favorite tomato soup when I came in, so I got their broccoli cheddar soup. But the soup was served lukewarm at best, it was so cool that it had congealed to be a really thick soup, not good! I think it's because I came around 3pm to eat lunch so maybe the food quality declines when you don't visit during their busy hours. They also forgot my apple on my lunch platter. I like panera bread and I frequently come to this location because of my Spanish classes. The food is pretty okay, the managers and employees are doing a good job overall. There's one thing that bothers me; they don't have a recycle trash. Also, when you order a dine-in cold drink, there's nothing but a plastic option which creates a great waste at the end of the day for no reason. As a business using lots of plastic every day, they should consider at least recycling the bottles. read more

Not sure why one of the reviewers stated that Dupont Circle is the only Panera Bread in DC as there are quite a few in the DC area. I have been to most of them and though I have only tried the baked goods, I have to say I really enjoy Panera. Thus far I have had the French toast, and cinnamon crunch bagels, plain croissant and the Kitchen Sink Cookie. Oh, the kitchen sink cookie! Who knew that the combination of pretzel pieces, caramel, and two kinds of chocolate could taste so good? It is supposed to be salted but I have yet to have one with salt on top, which is really not a problem for me. Most people are intimidated by the calories, but as I don't count calories 800 is not an issue for me. I would however, caution the reader to STAY AWAY FROM THIS COOKIE. Once you get a taste of it it is HARD TO REFRAIN FROM IT. i intended to eat a fourth of it each day and once I started I ate the whole thing in one sitting and my body and blood were NOT happy. This is no Mrs. Fields chocolate cookie. It is almost the size of a small pie. It contains caramel bits, pretzel bits, and two kinds of chocolate chips plus salt. It's a great tasting combination but this is NOT the cookie to eat at one sitting or to eat alone for that matter. I promise you that it WILL make you sick to your stomach if you eat it at one sitting, and I would NEVER give this to a child. Forewarned is forearmed. The plain croissant does not offer any sweetness but it is light, flaky and delicious. The cinnamon crunch bagel - delicious sliced (not toasted) and spread with butter is delicious as is the French toast bagel (a lighter, less messy option). I still want to try the chocolate chip, cherry vanilla and jalopeno bagels. Love the fact that you can get counter to table service with REAL DISHES and silverware. I have not been to one single location where the restaurant was unclean or the staff unfriendly or unprofessional. For me it has been a great experience and I love the fact that they use non-gmo foods. I usually go to their Tenleytown location but have been to the DuPont Circle location, as well as the Irving street location (at Washington Hospital Center) but there are quite a few locations in DC that you can find on their website and most of them have free Wifi. Overall IMO Panera Bread is an upscale combination of "fast food-bakery-coffee-shop" and is worthy of five stars in my book. read more

The service is great- they offered me a sample of the chili when I was unsure of what to get. They have delicious cookies and other sweet treats also. -1 star for not putting the cream cheese on my bagel. Probably a 3.5. I like Panera. I'm addicted to their "You Pick Two" option. I tend to get the tomato and mozzarella panini and the chicken noodle soup. Their iced green tea is also awesome, albeit a bit pricey when I can just drink what I have. But for a quick dinner this place works. There's lots of seating here...except when there isn't. The lower level usually isn't too crowded, but when I tend to go (weekdays after work, 5:30-6:00) there is always some group discussion or class going on, thus occupying a lot of table space. I still manage to find a seat, though. The number-card-thing-in-the-machine is a pain to figure out the first couple times, but all the times I've been there I've received my food no problem. They're pretty good about getting people through the line, so don't be too put off by the long line (if there is one, and there usually tends to be). The staff is usually pretty attentive. I don't have many negatives to say about this place, nor any positives. But what I get has always been yummy. read more

I have a fondness for this place. The staff are friendly, the food is good and the prices are reasonable. The service is efficient and now I know they have oatmeal for breakfast this will be my regular haunt in the mornings for the rest of my stay in Washington. One of the assistants even helped me master becoming a member and ordering on one of the machine terminals. My hotel recommended that I ate breakfast at LPQ which I tried twice and disappointed on both occasions. Try the cinnamon buns. Probably the best I've ever had in the US and UK. read more

I've been avoiding Panera for the past year or so because I feel like their food is a bit too salty for my liking. Spurred by a $5 gift card, I caved and visited the location in Dupont. I had the You Pick Two, and got a 1/2 turkey sandwich on Country bread, 1/2 Strawberry chicken poppyseed salad, and a whole wheat bagette. The strawberry chicken poppyseed salad remains one of my faves---they've had it seasonally the past several summers---but the chicken was a tad salty. Also, because the salad was a "premium" menu item, it cost me an additional $1.55, which I thought was kind of absurd. The whole wheat bagette was fine, and the sandwich was okay, albeit a little soggy for having just been made for me. My meal was about $9 with tax. Three pluses to this location are lots of seating, outdoor seating and free wi-fi. read more

It's ok. Some people get very excited about it, but to me it is just meh. I had a Mediterranean vegetable sandwich on a bagel, which was good, but it would have been better if the bagel was toasted and if there was hummus on it. In retrospect, I should have asked the staff if they could toast the bagel and put hummus on it, but also I know there are other restaurants in the world that would do/offer such things automatically. It's so irritating how little care that cooks at fast food restaurants put into making sure that an order is prepared correctly. The steak sandwich that I ordered was served with onion despite the order clearly asking for solely bread, meat and cheese. The ham sandwich that I ordered was served on the wrong bread even though the menu clearly says the bread should be country rustic. Really a good Panera! The line may look long, but they know how to move people through that line. There's a downstairs seating area, and if you eat in, they bring your food down to your table. The food is also good. Panera puts a lot of emphasis on their food, and they make sure it looks good as well as tastes good. I've eaten here many times, and have yet to be dissatisfied. read more

The food here is awesome! Customer service is wonderful too! Went here today for breakfast with a friend, after crashing at a local hotel for a birthday party the night before. It was a little bit of a wait to get the food, but a manager was sitting at the table behind us and handled our orders himself, then came and reimbursed us for our meal. This is a very convenient Panera. Located directly next to the Dupont Metro South exit, this place is very convenient to grab a quick snack from. It's very large and the wifi signal is strong. I am inside this location all the time because I go to school in the evenings nearby. If the staff get busy and make a slight slip up, they always fix the mistake very quickly. I have never had a bad experience here and I have eaten here once a week for the past couple years. Best location to sit is downstairs. They will bring you your food. If you need to get work done, grab a booth or sit at the large dining room style table. It's an amazing "get work done" location. read more

I recently visited this location to grab a bagel before I had to head back to the office. The layout of the cafe is not ideal, but considering it's location it isn't horrible. It was the lunch rush but the line to order was moving pretty fast, and they also have the fast-lane kiosks available. I ordered a toasted bagel with butter, as well as a bag of chips. When I received my order there was the toasted bagel as well as the chips and napkins in my bag. There wasn't any butter or even a knife. I didn't really have time so I just left with my order. It didn't bother me too much considering this is a common mistake at all Panera's. Just be mindful to check your bag as well as your receipt. read more

I like this place and was just there two days ago for lunch to go. great location, friendly people, plenty of room to sit including the downstairs. If you order and eat there they bring you your food, a nice touch. If you get it to go, you wait by the door. The other day when I was there they had two employees helping keep that waiting line down, speeding up the process.. It was very efficient. The bread is very good. I enjoy getting a soup in a bread bowl, but I'd recommend getting two soups if you're ordering to-go - there's a lot of bread bowl left after you're done eating the little cup of soup that this comes with. I usually get the chicken noodle with is very tasty. I also like their mac and cheese, it's very flavorful. One thing that's kind of a pain is that everything comes with the option of chips (salt fat and carbs) or a baguette (really? with my bread bowl??) or an apple. The apples tend to be kind of small and not that appealing, so I have on occasion simply refused the to get one of these sides even though it's included. They also have lots of tasty looking treats that I manage to not order most of the time. Occasionally I will cave to my sweet-tooth's demands and maybe hit the Krispy Kreme next door for a doughnut (or two!). read more
