I have walked by here so many times and did not even realize this place existed. I haven't seen one of these since my overseas trip years ago. So I know what they have to offer. One thing I forgot was how expensive they can be. I went to the prepared section to grab a bite to eat so I could head back to my office quickly. There wasn't much to choose from. I wasn't in the mood for something cold, so I went and looked over the hot items. There wasn't much to select from. I ended up getting a chicken parm wrap. It wasn't horrible, but definitely not something I would get again. I could have swore there were red peppers in it instead of tomatoes. Staff were super quick and polite. It is a bit hard to hear them as this sits at a busy spot in Union Station. They had to repeat themselves a few times for me to understand. read more

I got to the station trying to find a quick breakfast option- stopped through a few places and wasn't feeling it and about to give up. I'm glad I walked a bit further (past the pizza place- it's 915am, pizza is a little too early) and found pret. I swiped the egg white Greek frittata and I thought it was fairly priced (roughly $7 and change- Jan 2025). It was in their warming section thankfully the frittata was warm. This is my go-to quick spot in union station for food. They have a good selecting of items ready to grab (hot and cold sandwiches, salads, cups of fruit, chips, etc) and they have an adequate selection of baked goods (my favorite are the brownie bites). There is also plenty for nonmeat eaters. It's usually quick to pay and the service has been fine too. There's some seating if you're so inclined but you won't get any peace and quiet. read more

Rushing from a train to work can leave little time for browsing yummy things to grab on the way. Even more challenging is scouring the shelves in the numerous venues for anything that is portable and healthy to the work desk, jobsite, or next transportation vehicle. "Convenience" is part of the language that Pret a Manger ( Pret a mangay - took me years to say it all Frenchie) wants to speak to us. They are located right at the corner of the foot traffic that flows through the station from every direction. The cheerfully lit shelves quickly clear of the continuous fresh products (salads, sandwiches, oatmeal, wraps, yogurts, fruits, etc.) stocked throughout the day. The hardest part of selecting the item to enjoy because they all look so good. It's nice to try something new from each visit to get the through the standard selection that they carry. They keep it consistently fresh and nothing gets stored overnight. I'm hooked on the Greek yogurt with fruit. I will pair it with a juice or coffee that they have a good selection of as well. Their baked goods are minimal and just right to appeal to a random crowd. The bagels sit near the cookies and you see them when you reach the counter, so you have to make a impulsive decision within seconds. The check out process moves FAST. They get you in and out to your next destination. Plus the space is small and there's always a dance with people moving to get out of the way of one another. If you want to sit, there are counters and tables to sit at which makes it nice. You can watch the hustle and bustle of travelers and commuters dodge the homeless stragglers that float around wanting to grab your bag of food out of your hand. (Pretty annoying- DC food is not cheap). If you want a healthy and cheerful way to start your day in the DC Union station, this would be the place compared to others that seem less energetic/efficient, although busy. Got the balance meal for my train trip home. It had chicken, avocado, spinach, grain mixed, black beans, charred corn, red cabbage slaw and chili rings dressing. This was the first time I tried their balance meals and didn't know what to expect. It was okay and better than what I could of bought on the train. The dressing was hot and spicy, but used in moderation it was good. The grain mixture was the best part of the salad, it had brown rice, red quinoa and chickpeas. The rest of the ingredients didn't bring any flavor to the salad. The restaurant was like all Pret locations, they were courteous and efficient. 8/11/21 Another business in Union Station that has been closed due to The Coronavirus Pandemic and its mutated virus called The Delta Variant. This was the first business I saw effected by this unpopular virus. I quickly found many other businesses in Union Station to either be temporally closed down, or permanently shutdown. Though the prices are inline with other good establishments at Union Station, they strike you as high for some of the items, especially small salads, fruit cups, and their warm sandwiches. What I like the most about them is that they vary their selections and the checkout is very friendly and lightening quick; exactly what you want at a train station. If you are keeping an eye on salt, some of their sandwiches (I only tried the veggie options) can be salty. Go with salads or cold sandwiches instead. I have to give a special shout out to the folks at Pret. I was in the station at 6am headed out of town. I decided to grab a veggie wrap which is so delicious, reasonably priced, and not high in calories when this mentally ill person followed me into the store and wouldn't leave me alone. They got him away from me and out the store. I was genuinely freaked out so I really appreciated them. Even beyond that their customer service was on point. They were really friendly and helpful. Thanks so much! Update!!! I went there on Sunday and the associate, Melissa, was awesome!!! She was so helpful and nice. Additionally, I tried the carrot cake cookie. I love Pret in the UK, so much so, I have looked up the menu's of the Pret's around the globe to see what they have elsewhere (HK so far looks the best to me!). Anyway, came across this one at Union St, imagine my delight when I saw a 'Buffalo Chicken wrap with Frank's Hot sauce'!! !! I LOVE Frank's hot sauce!! So of course I tried it. Overall I think this place is awesome, it's really a 4.5/5. So many options for soups, salads, sandwiches, chips, pastries, coffee, etc. I mostly go come here when I'm craving junk food and then come to my senses to have something sensible, and end up with a sandwich or salad. I definitely like their spin on flavors, and everything is always fresh. The avocado in their sandwiches doesn't even turn by the time it's sold and I'm eating it. They even post all the nutritional facts in front of the product so there is no guesswork, and I can make a good decision. Lines don't exist, I've never had to wait more than a minute or two to checkout; the hardest part is always figuring out what to eat. Seating is usually available even when busy because people get up and go. I'm not into the coffee and deserts so I can't comment on those, but what I have eaten I consider to be tasty and a healthier option an most other places. Only negative I find is the price is more expensive than similar options at other places, but you get what you pay for. Great place to eat, go there! read more

Pret a Manger offers cold and hot sammiches with veg or animal protein, large and small soups in containers ready do go, large and small salads, whatever you want. Uh, unless you want to custom order, that only works for coffee. Pick what you want from the hot or cold rack and don't forget to grab a free roll. Vegetarian rating: 4 stars, there are cold veg wraps, hot veg sandwiches, veg soup and veg salad. I'm especially a fan of the little quinoa cup, topped generously with egg, avocado and greens. At first, I was mystified by why all of my coworkers pick up their lunch from here. Sandwiches are just not that exciting to me, and a triangle-sized half sandwich costs a hefty $4. I'm starting to come around though, for approximately 3 reasons. First, it's tasty (and filling)! Maybe this is because almost every sandwich has avocado, but I was surprised to find myself enjoying my sandwich, and actually staying full through the day (though I honestly don't know how a triangle half-sandwich would keep you full). Also, they donate their old sandwiches at the end of the day, so you always know you're getting a sandwich that was made the same day. Second, it's fast! The location is next to the metro entrance (no detour needed), and Pret usually has 4 cashiers during the lunch hour, so I've never had more than 1 person in front of me. Also, most places in Union Station have a made-to-order philosophy, and while I appreciate when a meal is made right in front of me, it also slows things down. Especially during the lunch rush hour. So it's nice to go to Pret and quickly pick out a fresh sandwich that I know was made that morning. Third, freebies! Sometimes, they'll have freebie samples by the cash registers (mini-soups and sandwiches), and if you go there often enough, they'll give you a free coffee once in a while. Actually, once, they gave me a free sandwich! To summarize, the food is decent, but the reason I go here is for the convenience. read more

One of my go-to places in Union Station when I'm in a hurry. Fresh, healthy, quick service food at decent prices. I usually get the tuna salad or the seasonal lobster salad (yes! Maine lobster claw, whole avocado, small dice of onion and orange) because they are tasty and gluten free. I've tried the falafel salad; it has couscous, and unfortunately they don't prepare salads without it. The strawberry lemonade is also delicious, a nice balance of tart and sweet. I am particularly impressed by the fast, friendly service at this location. One cashier was patiently assisting a very large family with a clear language barrier. After I told the woman who helped me that I'd be eating my salad on the train, she carefully tucked the salad dressing and napkins under the cardboard wrapper surrounding the container. It was a simple gesture that kept me from having to juggle lots of items that really touched me. They recently renovated the space, and there are cosy seats along the side of the space, making this also a good option if you have some extra time before your train. read more

Ever have a day when you have a craving so bad that if you don't get your fix, you probably won't be able function? Well that's definitely me today. All day, all I wanted was a latte and a brownie. I'd been wrestling with the craving for hours, but finally, I just had to have my fix. I moseyed on over to Pret only to find... *gasp* no brownies!! I was about to break out with a case of "scurvy" (If you google "Stove Top Stuffing Scurvy" commercial, you'll understand), but before I did, I went to the counter and asked if they had any more. The manager told me that they were all out, but the barista, Charlene, told me to hang on a second while she checked in the back. To my sheer joy and delight, she brought me a brownie!! I went to purchase a breakfast sandwich, but the cashier rang it up at fifty cents more the the sign said. When I mentioned this she said her price was correct. We went over to where the price sign was; she looked at the back and said it was an old sign, then removed both that sign and another. She said she would not sell it to me at the advertised price. That is deceptive. Who knows how many people are distracted and not paying attention to them charging a higher price than what is prominently displayed. Thankfully, since there are many other eating options in Union Station, I got my food elsewhere. If you patronize this place, be sure to watch that they don't overcharge you because the staff don't seem to understand the concept of false advertising. read more
