I have decided to challenge myself to explore more of DC this year. Sometimes that means my early morning commute I will take different walks to the office to see what is available. I had seen this pop up over time in Penn Quarter and seen it was open early. I finally made it a point to stop in to grab some breakfast to go. Unlike most visits, I did not look this place up beforehand and had to take a minute to look at the menu to see what they have. However, you can toss that out the window and walk up to the counter to see what they have readily available. A quick look to see what was there I asked for the Ham & Cheese Croissant. Not what you are thinking here. It's not a sandwich with ham and cheese between the cut portions of a croissant. It is ham and cheese hugged by the croissant as it bakes. Odd looking, but very tasty. The only downside is that since it is a croissant, it can be a bit messy to eat with all that flaky crust. But that's why you go into your office, close your door, and devour your breakfast snack. Definitely a new option for me on my work breakfast spots. Hopefully I will be able to get there earlier to have a chance to get other things that go fast. The food was pretty good. I had a raisin bun, which I would order again. But I wouldn't return to fresh baguette for one. It wasn't so good that I would go there just so I could eat one. I also had half of my wife's almond croissant, which again was very good but not so good that I would seek one out. The service was inconsistent. There were two registers, and when I walked up to the second register to pay the woman who was standing behind, it, just walked away from it. She wasn't paying any attention to me or the other customers. There were five people there and only one person was working a register. Everyone else seemed to be milling around. It wasn't that they were holding a bad attitude or anything. It was more that they were in inattentive and unaware. The ambience... Well, it provided some relief from the cold. I stopped by the Terrell Place location on a weekend near the end of the day, and it was clear they'd had a busy one since many of the pastries were sold out. Even so, the one staff member working was excellent and kept everything running smoothly. The space was clean and welcoming, just like every other Fresh Baguette I've visited. Received these as a gift, so coming from the perspective that they have been sitting out for a couple hours and reheated in the oven. Despite this, you can see the visible flakes in the croissant, which is very important for a cafe marketing itself through French-style pastry! Additionally, we were so excited by the pastries we got to try. If this place gets their service together, they would be one of the best spots in town. We came in and ordered two bagel sandwiches. I wanted a latte, but I heard the cashier tell a group in front of us that they only had drip coffee. I thought that was weird because they have this whole little thing on the wall showing the different types of coffee drinks. I ordered a large black coffee and the employee, with trainee written on her jacket, told me they only have drip coffee. She then proceeded to ask me if black coffee was the same thing as a drip coffee. She seemed fairly young, but if you're working with coffee, you should understand that a black coffee is indeed a drip coffee with nothing in it. After ordering the food and sitting down at a table, we waited approximately 20 to 25 minutes and noticed that people that had ordered after us were receiving their food. I asked the manager what was going on and nobody seemed to have our order. He gave somewhat of an apology and had me verify my order with him. He told me they would immediately get on it, but the woman making the sandwiches just continued making other orders. I sat back down and waited another 10 minutes before the sandwich maker called me back up there. She asked me again what we ordered and I told her. After about another 10 minutes, we finally received our food and it was great. At some point in there, I would've complained to the manager again, but he was out on a phone call in his truck and I really didn't want to bother him even though his staff was dropping the ball. The problem was all this waiting around for them to get their act together almost made us late for an appointment we had. The staff here is a mess and the manager really didn't seem to care all that much about it, but the food is great. I don't know that we would ever come back if we come back to DC. read more

The front has a big display case with plenty of sandwiches and pastries spaced apart. We got coffee, a butter croissant and an ahi tuna sandwich and hot coffee. The baguette the sandwich was made on was still warm. The tuna was freshly made (not canned) and accompanied by greens (arugula, tomatoes and onions). The coffee was very high quality. I've been back 3 times/month since they opened! Glad another location of Fresh Baguette opened in Penn Quarter. Scrumptious croissants and croissant bagel slice "Cro'gel" sandwiches with an everything bagel like seasoning. The sandwich was a bit pricey at $14, there's also a petite smaller size Cro'gel sandwich too. The Fall Autumn Veggie Cro'gel sandwich hit the spot with a fried egg with melted cheese, roasted veggies, aioli, and greens. The flavors blended well and very filling. While the Tarragon Egg Salad Cro'gel sandwich was fun to try, it was a bit tangy with a bold pickle flavor. If you love pickles, go for it! The Pesto/Caprese Cro'gel sandwich is a bit bland. The fluffy Almond Croissant was divine. There's a galore of breads, croissants, sandwiches, and baked goods to choose from. Would be nice to see vegetarian baguette sandwiches added to the menu. This place is very underwhelming. Not a lot of variety in products. not very common bakery items and nothing ever seems fresh. They don't even have cookies some days. What bakery doesn't have fresh baked cookies, and when they do they aren't fresh. I had to opt for some weird truffle bite sized cake dessert, and when i did, the flavors were awful. Place barely has people. They run out of stuff fairly early. I would say maybe just buy a fresh baguette early morning. I would go to another bakery for pastries, even whole foods is better. read more

I've been wanting to try this bakery out for some time and it has great curb appeal. However after trying the California Crogel - I would not come back unless it was to try a pastry. The crogel wasn't toasted warm and was rather cold to eat. Everything was assembled as if I could make it at home. They didn't have any coffee or milk available which didn't make sense when the cafe was light on traffic and during lunch hour. The last time I had really good baguette was in St. Martin eight years ago. Today (11/14/24) i almost walked passed Fresh Baguette i can never passed a Baguette and thanks goodness I didn't. This Baguette is 10 out of 10 for me! It's flaky/crispy/bit chewy but super soft on the inside and a bit of salt makes this a crave worthy! Add cheese and i had dinner. LOVE it! And I had Quiche Lorraine for lunch the crust was flaky/buttery/light the fillings were stuffed with smoked sausages, the eggs were creamy. What a great bakery! We went on our way out of the city. It was early afternoon, so a lot of the pastries were sold out. We got sandwiches that were probably the best we've had in a while! The bread was good and the ingredients were fresh. We got eclairs for the road too! My only criticism was it didn't smell like baking bread. I would have enjoyed that!
