I reallyyyy want to like this location, but the problem is that they are always swamped (many schools & families in the area) and it seems like they are often understaffed. I find myself enduring longer than normal waits for when I do rapid pick-up AND for when I order in-person. I'll see lots of pick-up orders pile up behind the counter and there will be nobody to actually bring them to the rapid pick-up shelf. In addition to the line to order in-person, there will be a growing group of people on the side waiting for their rapid pick-up orders, which causes a lot of commotion in the front. Whenever I've gone there is only one person taking orders, which leads to a long line leading to the door. If they had a person for each cash register AND an assigned person to quality-check pick-up orders/bring them to the shelf/make drinks, I think that would be a start. read more

The workers are pretty nice and patient. The shop is relatively clean as a worker goes around throwing things out and wiping tables. It's a pretty nice sized store. The bread for the bread bowl is so tough and chewy and the croutons they throw on top are just old bread which are tough and chewy as well. Basically rocks. Not even toasted. read more

The bagels still sit there out in the open and I am sure flies land on them throughout the day and they probably go stale faster. I wish they would cover them. Also I came here to get a salad one evening and I saw one of the guys go in the back with their plastic gloves on and they returned with more supplies and they didn't replace their plastic gloves and they continue to grab croutons for my salad with the same gloves they wore when they went in the back to get more supplies. This Panera is located in a hub of activity in the Astoria area. Within blocks of a theater, restaurant and more, this Panera is a hub of activity as a (relatively) low cost place to grab a bite ot eat in a comfortable atmosphere. I visited here on a late Saturday afternoon and this spacious restaurant was busy but by no means overwhelmingly packed, which was a relief. The layout is similar to the Panera not too far from my house which separates out the area where you order food from the main seating area. On this particular visit I had their tuna sandwich, a basic offering but it worked with my current mode of trying to be good whenever possible. To drink I just had a basic hot coffee. The sandwich was served nicely cut in half with bread and veggies, the problem was that whoever made the tuna that day didn't take time to drain the tuna properly. It was very watery, and then combined with the mayo the tuna just became too mushy. Sure tuna is kind of naturally mushy, but it shoul dnot have th econsistency of mashed potatoes, which this almost did. On the happy side, their coffee did not disappoint and was equivalent to coffee I've had at other Panera branches. In all honestly I know that Panera does better work than the sandwich I had. I've had their baked goods which range from "good" to "addicting because it has crack in it". Still, for this experience I think 3 stars is fair, though I'd probably make it 3.5 if that was an option. read more

It's a chain type of food place so it's hard to judge because I don't usually eat at a chain place. My friend took me here for a bite and I think I can say something different because my experience was ok and not bad. The salad I had was pretty big, gigantic to be precise. I thought I couldn't handle such a big plate but since it's a big salad, I ate it like there's no tomorrow. It was not that bad to tell you the truth. I love my own salad and hardly eat salad outside but this one was ok. It was good to try. As a food critic, never say no to enter anywhere and try everything. I was going to say one of the best, IT IS THE BEST. Coffee is always fresh and good. Choice of milks, sugars, artificial sweeteners and plenty of napkins, stirrers etc. Now the rest. The food is good in a very basic home style kind of way and in my opinion a bit overpriced, just a little but it's understandable for a retail dining establishment, no matter how casual. The atmosphere is nice, clean with the perfect lighting. Staff seem active, informative and responsive most to all of the time. There's a soda fountain in the bake and the oven in the morning is quite busy. In the summer, it make for a nice environment to sit and cool off with some of their food choices. And in the winter it makes for a nice cozy place to just sit back to escape the cold. I have had a few things off their menu including their sandwiches. The meat, veggies that go inside the sandwiches are clean and tasty. But the magic texture is in their bread, I really like Panera Bread's bread. It has a nice outside crust and soft center. It's a shame the only serve the Souffle in the morning. Those are one of my favorites. Their soups and salads (fresh) are good also but soup-wise I think I'd prefer something from a chain of another place like a Hale and Hearty. I saw Pizza on their menu once, not sure if still available and never tried it. And onto the desert: nothing special and a bit overpriced. The last order of just desert because they didn't have Souffle or the Soup I wanted was for a over done, a bit too sweet brownie with fudge smeared on top but that Chocolate Duet Cookie when warm was soft and really really good. I enjoy Panera's food and overall ambiance. The Environment: Depending on the time of day, you get a mixed crowd in here. Can be extremely busy and noisy when local schools get out. Sometimes they have a difficult time keeping the tables clean since it can be quite busy, but there's lots of seating at least. Good for long studying sessions with access to great food, coffee with free refills, restrooms, and free (sometimes limited) Wifi. Music isn't too loud though (I cringe just walking past Applebee's). No electrical outlets for public use though. The Food: Salads are a bit expensive but delicious. Fall is a great time for their soups- broccoli cheddar or the autumn squash. Bread is fresh and yummy, but they do run out of bread bowls on cold days. Sometimes the whole wheat bread doesn't taste quite as fresh though. I think they also have a secret healthy menu with power bowls. Wish they had more dairy-free options. And I was told they can heat up any panini or sandwich if you ask. You get a similar experience at most Paneras. Glad to have this chain around though. read more

So normally I love Panera and this review is NOT about the food but the Manager. My Sis and I went there yesterday around 4p. We entered with my pup who was in a pet stroller. I have openly brought my pup into Panera dozens of times in her pet stroller, as they don't have any sign banning dogs. I double checked after yesterday. Anyway, we went in and ordered. The Manager asked me if my pup was a service animal, she is not so I answered no. My Sis then said, we are taking out, we aren't staying and the Manager said the dog will still need to stay outside. Was I annoyed, yes, but I didn't say anything and went outside while my Sis waited for the food. My Sis did make a face but didn't say anything. The reason I am complaining is not because I was asked to wait outside the reason I am complaining is that the Manager, started talking about us to another co-worker in front of my Sis. REALLY?!?!?! She said, "I know they were annoyed but it's my pet peeve when people try to sneak things into the restaurant." Well, I DIDN'T TRY TO SNEAK my pup in, if I did, I don't think I would have walked up to the counter to order food with my pup facing the employees. The Manager's gossiping within in earshot and in the open is extremely unprofessional, especially when we complied. I've always had a good experience in getting something quick to go that felt more nutritious than Dunkin' or Starbucks for example. Green passion smoothie, quiches, and egg sandwiches are good options. I do wish, however there was some more gluten/dairy free options in the bakery department. Today I spent exactly $21 dollars at Panera for my meal. One of the things I got was a chicken Caesar salad. As I was eating the salad I noticed a black curly hair in my salad. It could've been a pubic hair, I'm not sure but either way I have long blonde hair so it obviously wasn't mine. However, I know things happen so I turn to my boyfriend and say "well it's just one hair. You only ever get one, never two." So I let it go. I take another bite of my salad and what do ya know.. ANOTHER ****ing black curly hair in my salad. It's almost as if a man squatted over my chicken Caesar salad and plucked out his pubes, adding a little garnish. Great place to meet up with family and friends to chat or just to get some work done. The food quality is pretty good, especially their soups and pastries. I recommend you try their creamy tomato soup. Their bread is always soft and fresh (a definite plus)! Their lobster rolls (only available during the summer) are also quite amazing. Unfortunately, there are times when their soups come out lukewarm, leaving me to wonder what the hell is going on. However, their service is usually on point and their employees are usually friendly. Anytime after 2 to 3 PM, the "children" start swarming the place with their buddies, making the place.... uncomfortable. They're loud and obnoxious, as most children are for their age. There's also a handful of homeless people that "live" there (certain seats in the front and back areas). Example, I noticed one woman who basically brought her "home" with her (she had all kinds of clothes and bags with her all around the table). Every couple of hours she would exit the store, leaving the rest of her possessions behind. I hope Panera institutes some policies so potential customers have places to sit and actually enjoy their food at this location. read more

I have been coming to Panera for over a year now. Sometimes I buy something, sometimes I don't but I tend to spend an average of 2 hours here each time. It's great that they don't badger people to buy stuff, the wi-fi is literally free (no purchase/code required), and there are lots of tables and outlets. There is also a lot of kids here. It seems to be the local hang out spot, for the teachers even. Panera feels like a school cafeteria including the conversations and oh, the food. The food is not good! It's overpriced, bland, and lackluster. I've bought the clam chowder soup and the roast beef sandwich due to starvation and I've only been satisfied so so. I do like the drinks though whether it is the smoothies, coffee, or chai tea. That stuff is worth it. I will continue to come back because it's a great place to get some work done. There's not many of these café/restaurants left where you can nosh, lounge, work, surf the net, and talk loudly. They also have a rewards card. The place was overtaken by teenagers. Not just 5 or 10. We're talking 40-50. They were BANANAS. Let me not be completely cranky--a few of them were respectfulish and seemed to know how to behave in public. The rest? Not so much. I know it's completely crazy to give 5 stars to a corporation, but my willing here and always is to see the owner's project, how it is operated and if people are satisfied. Panera's is meant to be the best place to eat, drink and hang out in queens-astoria, it is affordable, clean and relaxed, in a great location and with free wi-fi. Starting with the bread: Baked every morning, fresh and soft. Good enough for me. Pastries: Go with the cookies, shortbread is my favorite and is a tough recipe to match in your house. Drinks: Drip coffee is superb and you shouldn'd go for any espresso drink, it is a big failure of the place, the machine is terrible and the espresso is terrible. Sodas are a good option and there is also iced-tea, with free refills( YEES ) Sandwiches and salads: Very good, plenty of options, there are seasonable stuff. Can't go wrong... 4 stars for a chain store is above average, coming from me, but there's a reason this Panera location earned extra points in my book. Or an extra star from my Yelp rating, rather. As part of Astoria board game meetup group, my friend needed a venue to host a gaming event. He called up the manager, who said it'd be cool. We all showed up, purchased our respective items, and enjoyed a few hours of game play. Yes, I get it, we probably pissed off a lot of people, but let's be real for a second. There are people who purchase a coffee, if even, and sit there all day, multiple days a week or whatnot studying or surfing the web on their laptop. Rightfully so if they're studying, working, etc. This event was a one-time only situation for a few hours. Apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced. Point is, that on top of generally friendly service and standard good Panera food, the manager and employees were incredibly gracious and generous for hosting us. One of the guys who worked there even came around to check out some of our games and talk about how cool it was. Sweet. Major points for actually staying on top of changing out the coffee and keeping it fresh. Those times listed on the tags on the coffee urns are accurate, and I saw them consistently brewing fresh coffee. General things to keep in mind: Panera food is kinda pricey. A corporate-run chain bakery that sells mediocre, carbo-loaded food at inflated prices and is often playing the worst kind of muzak imaginable can never get the fifth star. Just on principle alone. Sorry. Having said that, this can be a great place to get some work done: bottomless coffee, plenty of snacks, and free wi-fi. Just bring your laptop, set up near an outlet and no one will bother you for hours. So I'd gladly have given this place the fourth star, but lately things have taken a bizarre turn... Every afternoon this place is invaded by hordes of the most obnoxious, d-bag skater kids you've ever seen and it becomes virtually useless to any other kind of customer. These kids are packed ten, maybe fifteen deep into the booths, each one thinking they're coolest because they can scream louder than the next. It is pure chaos, with flailing tantrums, top-of-your-lungs screeching, and zero respect for anyone or anything around them. I even saw a kid try to pick a fight with an 80 year old man who asked him why he was shouting. I realize of course that droves of kids showing up to spend cash daily is great business, but management really needs to step up and do something because much of the behaviour is simply just not acceptable in a public eating establishment. Sandwich a bit too spicy for me, the free WiFi feels priced into the sandwich $7+ dollars for a sandwich in Astoria? The sandwich was okay, but the place felt like a mix between Starbucks and McDonalds. It serves food that is obviously better than McDees, but at Starbucks prices. But I do like the chill and relaxing decor. The only down side is even though it didn't feel very loud, my gf had a hard time hearing me when I was on the phone w/ her. Maybe that's a good thing, especially when you want to avoid hearing those loud ppl that like to "share" their phone conversations. read more
