We could barely hear each other sitting super close to each other. The atmosphere is like a night club but it's a restaurant so it's confusing. They had a live DJ tonight 3/28/25. The DJ was great. The music is really good though esp if you like Bad Bunny and all the cool Latin singers. The drinks are good and fun. The Hennessy colada was good and had plenty of alcohol but the ice was lumpy so it didn't get blended fully. I really enjoyed the choices of food coming from El Salvador (Curtido), Venezuela, Cuban, Mexican, etc, I loved the Maduros bc they were done perfectly and were ripe. Most up to date is the website! This bandeja paisa platter is probably artery clogging, but so satisfying. You get a huge slab of pork belly, steak, rice, beans, eggs, avocado and plantains. The skin on the pork belly was pretty chewy but the meat was delish (can't go wrong with the belly meat). The rice and beans were fabulous. The steak was a no frill grilled steak, there is a green sauce that comes with the plate and pairs well with the steak. It's almost $30 for this plate. Would I get it again? Probably not. The sweetness of the cachapa compared to the saltiness of the cheese and chicken was a great mix! We also got a vegan chicken arepa. The arepa itself was pretty bland and I wasn't a huge fan of the fried "chicken" but my friend really enjoyed this! Today is Colombian independence day so I decided to have lunch at a small Colombian restaurant @lavecinaastoria . The drinks were on point and on this hot and humid day in NYC it hit the spot. The bandeja paisa was pretty good; came with a grilled steak (bistec), plantains (platanos), a whole strip of chicharron, rice and beans and an arepa and some maduros. For $22, I feel like I've gotten a little more at other places but this was still delicious! Steak was tender to eat. Chicharron went great with the sauces as well. The maduros were good too. I wish they gave more with the maduros appetizer but it was great with the cotija cheese. Maybe we ordered wrong but I was expecting an arepa sandwich when we got the chicharron arepa. :( Overall, experience here was good. Came here for the soup of the day (beef rib soup) and every time I order, the meat provided is less and less. This time they gave me 2 tiny pieces of beef rib which were extremely extremely tough. I felt like a dog ripping into the beef rib trying to bite it loose. Once I bit a piece off I almost choked on it because it was literally not chewable, like a piece of rubber. The soup also tasted like water, no flavor. I had to put salt, sauce into it just to make it taste like something. The menu prices are also not accurate. They have certain items listed at a price on the menu then when you're charged it's like 2-3 dollars more. I'm pretty sure that's deceptive pricing and illegal. In the past I confronted them about it and they just angrily said that's the price and forced me to pay the higher, unlisted price. Surprised no one's reported them yet. I have been on a Latin food craze lately and found myself here one day for dinner to satisfy that craving! We stopped by around 7pm on a Wednesday and they weren't busy at all. They've expanded their menu since the last time I came here which was cool to see. They now have Latin Bowls but honestly, they just charge for each ingredient in the bowl so you're not really getting a "deal" which is what I initially thought. I would still recommend making your own bowl if none of the pre-made ones catch your eye. We ordered the Paisa Bowl (~$20) which comes with white rice, red beans, sweet plantains, steak, chicharron, fried egg, and avocado. We asked to substitute the chicharron for chicken since we don't eat pork. Apparently, it's not that easy to do a substitution like that. I didn't understand why since they're essentially the same price. He "removed" the chicharron and just charged us for the chicken. It was an additional ~$3. I was super hungry and excited to try this bowl, so I let it go. It took about 20 minutes to prepare the food, which is pretty long for one plate. By the time we got it, we had really built up an appetite. It came with 4 sauces: pink sauce, aji sauce (green), chipotle sauce, and garlic lemon. Honestly, this Latin Bowl was delicious! It was well worth the wait. The chicken and steak were super tender and were complemented by the white rice, beans, and plantains. The avocado slices and lettuce were a nice, light touch, as well. The egg was a bit overcooked; I was expected a sunny-side up egg or at least a bit runny but it wasn't at all. The sauces were great - the pink sauce and aji sauce are a must! You can dip that in everything! For ~$24 and considering I split it with someone, it was basically ~$12 per person which is reasonable. If they had this in a smaller portion at half the price, I would definitely come back more frequently. If you're in the Steinway area or looking for a solid Latin platter, La Vecina will keep you satisfied! read more
