On their website and Instagram, they advertise this place as a listening bar with a cool, chill ambiance. The emphasis is on music. However, the staff was talking really loudly in the bar area (almost screaming) and the quality of the speakers wasn't that great. Yes, city pop was playing but it didn't feel like the center of the bar. If this was a cheap neighborhood bar, I could let it slide. However, it was 28 dollars for one drink. Hidden inside of Gulp, this speakeasy is the sister/renovated version of 929--a Canto/Mando pop themed speakeasy. 56709 is J-pop themed and is a casual, chill vibe inside. They offer a variety of amazing drinks as well as some food options (from Gulp). I got their Ringo and Pika Pika and thoroughly enjoyed both of then. They were both sweet and refreshing. My friend got both of their specials for that night and also enjoyed them. My current favorite bar in LIC and I would highly recommend. read more

This speakeasy-style bar is such a fun surprise, blending a Japanese pop aesthetic with delicious Taiwanese comfort food. Was excited to try the spiritual successor to 929 LIC. Came on a weekday a little after they opened and were seated immediately for a table of 4 without a reservation, so that was nice. It's a 90min time limit for a party of 4 and a one drink minimum per person. Space remains mostly unchanged for those who've been to 929 before. Mostly just aesthetic changes to the posters on the wall and obviously the music switched over to Japanese pop. The music itself was fine, but I wouldn't really consider it a listening bar. At least the quality of music wasn't super amazing. The staff had to keep going back and forth to adjust the volume for some tracks that were playing way louder than others. As for food and drinks, in all we ordered 5 drinks + mala fries: - Usagi (sailor moon inspired): Probably the most spirit forward of the drinks we had for the night. - Pika Pika: This was supposed to have tomato and cheese in it, but overwhelming flavor was mango. Definitely on the sweeter side. - EPO: Creamy, kinda tasted like a Bailey's drink. - Momoko: Very sweet on the peach/sherry. - Mariya: A bit more spirit forward at first sip, but a very sour after taste. Almost like a tamarind sour? - Mala fries: Nice and crispy. Not particularly heavy on the ma or the la, but it was seasoned enough to be tasty with a small dab of mayo on the same. I found for $20/cocktail and $16 for the fries to be wildly overpriced for the quality of the drinks we got and portion of the fries. Also we all agreed the drinks were pretty weak. I usually feel something after just one drink on an empty stomach, but I walked out of here feeling absolutely nothing (and not in the I'm drunk way). But what really pushed down this review for me was just how inattentive the wait staff was. I don't mind being passed by a couple times, but after the third and fourth time where I literally had my hand up in front of a waiter while he was chatting up the people next to us (who was either his friends or he was hitting on them), we just decided to get the check instead of order another round. Was kind of dumbfounded to be honest as were the other people in my group who saw me trying to flag our waiter down. It was fruity without being overly sweet. Super tasty drink that I finished in no time Limited food menu. We shared the fried platter which included salt & pepper chicken, cuttle fish, tofu, and asparagus. The best item we ate during our mini bar and dinner crawl for the evening. Chicken was aggressively seasoned and quite addicting. Fish provided more of a moist and plumpy bite. Asparagus was correctly trimmed and lightly fried offering a vegetal balance to the other items. The bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable. They were excited to chat about the drinks and explain any items. Quite a bit of showmanship too while they crafted the cocktails. The main knock I have is that the service was very bad for me. THIS is my favorite bar in NYC. I waited years for city pop to embed itself in NYC hard enough for a bar to pop up and this place was the answer to my un-verbaliEd plea to the heavens. It used to be the canto/mando-pop bar 929 which I also loved and I think it's just a new theme, same owners. There's something about the ambiance which invites conversation, even if it's not intensely themed like some other bars - it gives more living room in a friends house with records on the wall thad are on theme more than it gives "city pop runs in our blood". That being said, their themed napkins have me trying to take one home as memorabilia every time I go. The bartenders are fascinating to watch - they are very skilled in their craft and can do that thing where they pour liquids from a container into a cup with like feet in between (I'm sure there's a name for this skill but I'm too amateur to know). I have to say, the Junko was way to strong for me, but what was I thinking getting something inspired by an old fashioned when I am a weak lightweight? Next time I'm 100% trying the Pika. read more
