I highly suggest if you're a big party, save yourself the money and find a better restaurant. Food was ok not that great for the price we paid $60 for a prefix menu. Service was average. $25 a plate for two kids for 3 chicken tenders. The music was extremely loud and the place was extremely cold. On top of this they charged themselves 25% gratuity without our approval. Do not recommend for big parties you can find better places in NY.
This is a nice date night spot! We ordered an the tostones con churrasco y guacamole. It was flavorful and the perfect appetizer. They had a great female DJ and it definitely gave lounge vibes. I would come back for a date or girls night. I had a Hennessy pina colada to drink. Pretty good!
Atmosphere- buzzing, energetic with great music on the TV. The decor was cool. Service - good. Solo waitress/ bartender for 4 tables. It was fairly empty( Tuesday night ). She forgot to get our waters. Food - average. The photos looked really good but the food was so so. Artichoke arepa was deep fried and tasteless. The side of beans was tasteless and blah - I mean this is a Colombian restaurant! My summer salad plus add shrimp ( $16+ $10) was a bit disappointing with more croutons ( I counted 25) than greens. The balsalmic dressing was good. The shrimp were in a nice garlic sauce. I was dying for a cup of Colombian coffee ; their sign stated fresh coffee served all day but they did not have any. Parking on Steinway - free after 7 pm. Easy access. This was an ok experience. Not going to be back!
The food here tastes good and there is variety bc it's fusion Latin food. But the first thing you notice is that the music is way too loud. We could barely hear each other sitting super close to each other. The atmosphere is like a night club but it's a restaurant so it's confusing. They had a live DJ tonight 3/28/25. The DJ was great. The music is really good though esp if you like Bad Bunny and all the cool Latin singers. The drinks are good and fun. The Hennessy colada was good and had plenty of alcohol but the ice was lumpy so it didn't get blended fully. I really enjoyed the choices of food coming from El Salvador (Curtido), Venezuela, Cuban, Mexican, etc, I loved the Maduros bc they were done perfectly and were ripe. The tostones were very crispy and some were too hard. The pernil was good but a bit dry. The food was good but the best part of this place is that there's a fusion of dishes from different countries.
We went to a restaurant down the block from here but ended finding out we couldn't get in unfortunately but everything happens for a reason. I'm glad we found this place and enjoyed the game and delicious food and drinks, they were also packed out but we're able to accommodate me and my wife to seats and amazing views and still get incredible service. The ambience was love and loud and beautiful, definitely recommend this place!
Great location with amazing views. The food was fantastic. Carlos couldn't have been a better server. Hope to come back soon.
Note: a lot of the photos/menus on Yelp are actually outdated because they no longer have a build your own bowl. It seems the place has been renovated since those menu photos were posted. Most up to date is the website! This bandeja paisa platter is probably artery clogging, but so satisfying. You get a huge slab of pork belly, steak, rice, beans, eggs, avocado and plantains. The skin on the pork belly was pretty chewy but the meat was delish (can't go wrong with the belly meat). The rice and beans were fabulous. The steak was a no frill grilled steak, there is a green sauce that comes with the plate and pairs well with the steak. It's almost $30 for this plate. Would I get it again? Probably not. More so for the price and also how unhealthy it is!
Had the lunch special here. Il tell you rite now this place caught me off guard. The soup was like they had someones grandmother in the back cooking. And they even blessed it with chunks of chicken. Amazing. Drinks was decent too. The girls in there treat you like you a papi so service is definitely on point.
I love the Latin fusion vibe. The food, the platting, drinks are very good. Patricia, the waitress is so sweet with the nicest personality. She knows exactly what drinks we want. Passion Fruit Sangria with condensed milk. I go there every time I'm in Queens. La Vecina, is one of the better Latin restaurants in Astoria. I definitely recommend this place.
I loved everything about this place - the hospitable service, the delicious food, and the fun ambience Food: I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu here! My favorite thing was the cachapa! So for cachapas and arepas, you can choose out of three different types of fillings! We got the mozzerella, plantains, and beans! We added grilled chicken and honestly it was heavenly! It's so large and filling and oozing with flavor! The sweetness of the cachapa compared to the saltiness of the cheese and chicken was a great mix! We also got a vegan chicken arepa. The arepa itself was pretty bland and I wasn't a huge fan of the fried "chicken" but my friend really enjoyed this! We also got a bowl with grilled chicken which came with fries, rice, grilled chicken, and beans! The bowl is great if you want something more protein heavy! This was a lot for two people so we had tons of leftovers! Service: everyone who works here is incredibly nice and joyful! They made us feel very welcome and gave suggestions of how we can customize our orders! They were very attentive Price: reasonable prices for everything but I thought the bowl was a little pricy for what it was! Ambience: loved the vibe of this place! Very fun and I would come back for drinks becuase it definitely seems like it would have fun bar vibes
I came here after my friend kept raving about it. I have to say she wasn't kidding the food here is excellent. I came before 7pm and they were having happy hour which I took advantage of. I did the build your own arepa. Had the sweet corn arepa with chorizo, beans and cheese. My husband had the same but did chicharron (fried pork belly) for his meat. Both were delicious and the portion is more than generous. I can't wait to come back to try their other dishes.
I was attracted to this restaurant for 2 reasons. 1) One being that I was craving Columbian food. 2) Secondly but most importantly, I liked that they have a build-your-own Latin bowl option. (Some places offer things on their plates that I don't necessary like, so it's nice to know that I can choose what I like) Of course, I chose to make my own Latin Bowl. I opted for brown rice as my base, ropa vieja as my protein, beans and plantain as my 2 toppings and also added sweet corn as an additional topping. My friends and I also decided to share salchipapas. Everything was really good and super filling as Columbian food always is. Service was good. Restaurant is very spacious with table spread out. Price is reasonable. My friends and I really liked our experience here.

This place has been on my radar for a while however,the arepas were okay. Even thought I ate it right away after they packed it for me. The cheese was not melted totally and the arepa was dry not moist. The best thing I had at this place was the agua panela. The agua panela is made from sugar cane and they add lemon to make it like a lemonade. Will like to go back to try other dishes. read more

I have been on a Latin food craze lately and found myself here one day for dinner to satisfy that craving! We stopped by around 7pm on a Wednesday and they weren't busy at all. They've expanded their menu since the last time I came here which was cool to see. They now have Latin Bowls but honestly, they just charge for each ingredient in the bowl so you're not really getting a "deal" which is what I initially thought. I would still recommend making your own bowl if none of the pre-made ones catch your eye. We ordered the Paisa Bowl (~$20) which comes with white rice, red beans, sweet plantains, steak, chicharron, fried egg, and avocado. We asked to substitute the chicharron for chicken since we don't eat pork. Apparently, it's not that easy to do a substitution like that. I didn't understand why since they're essentially the same price. He "removed" the chicharron and just charged us for the chicken. It was an additional ~$3. I was super hungry and excited to try this bowl, so I let it go. It took about 20 minutes to prepare the food, which is pretty long for one plate. By the time we got it, we had really built up an appetite. It came with 4 sauces: pink sauce, aji sauce (green), chipotle sauce, and garlic lemon. Honestly, this Latin Bowl was delicious! It was well worth the wait. The chicken and steak were super tender and were complemented by the white rice, beans, and plantains. The avocado slices and lettuce were a nice, light touch, as well. The egg was a bit overcooked; I was expected a sunny-side up egg or at least a bit runny but it wasn't at all. The sauces were great - the pink sauce and aji sauce are a must! You can dip that in everything! For ~$24 and considering I split it with someone, it was basically ~$12 per person which is reasonable. If they had this in a smaller portion at half the price, I would definitely come back more frequently. If you're in the Steinway area or looking for a solid Latin platter, La Vecina will keep you satisfied! read more

A ton of these arepa places have been popping up everywhere so I had to try it! @lavecinaastoria is a build your own arepa sandwich you choose the arepa, protein, and toppings. We got the ropa vieja and the pollo guisado and for drinks we got the frozen sangrias the left is the passion fruit and guava and the other is the Spanish red wine sangria. I never review a place this many times. I'm usually so underwhelmed w/ food in Astoria. But honestly this place is Ssssooooo good! They have lunch specials. And happy hour. Order off their website. I feel like it's better for their business than grubhub or seamless. They are on there too. They staff is so nice! It's clean So many choices. Love how many things there are for vegetarians. Generous w sauces - oh the sauces. Mmmm Today I got a bowl lunch special. Comes w soda. You choose a base a protein side a sauce and a topping. Lots of options. Vegetarian if you want it. 2 kinds of Chicken - pulled or grilled. Beef pork Etc. I got a salsa verde and it was spicy and delicious. At first I thought I wouldn't have enuf sauce but I didn't even need the whole thing. I got grilled chicken (pollo a la plancha which is $1 more) salad greens roasted sweet potato picked onions and I added avocado (95 cents more) and grilled corn ($1 more). I am totally full hours later. Generous portions. Fresh ingredients. So flavorful. Forget chipotle and support your local business! I got a limeade and it was made fresh. You control the sugar. Could have had it w raspberry but didn't. So refreshing. Wish it was crushed w ice in blender and had more mint though. read more
Had this catered to work today. Super tasty. Note their catering menu has different food than the restaurant, but I'd totally go visit the restaurant based on this meal. Had pork and chicken (pollo suisado) as the entrees. Sides we're sweet plantains, corn, black beans, and two types of rice. One was garlic rice and the other was a kale pesto brown rice. There were a bunch of interesting sauces, but the roasted peppers and the salsa verde were top notch. All in all if you ignore the oil the meats sit in, the flavor is great and all very fresh. Highly recommend the catered food at least. read more

This space has wonderful aesthetics and the staff is really friendly! As for the food, they served the best Columbian arepa I've tasted so far. The corn meal patty was a great, fluffy contrast to the saucy stew stuffed arepa version I ordered. That all said, I vastly prefer Venezuelan style arepas, particularly the sweet corn cake cachapa version. Every time I've had Columbian style arepas, they are a bland white patty that makes me think of stale Wonder Bread. Obviously, some people love Wonder Bread. But I'm in the "who likes tasteless, zero-nutrition white bread?" camp. Dame pan integral all day! I had their sweet corn cake with cheese dessert option too. Closer to Venezuelan style, but still doesn't take the cake. Heh. From reviews, I think their menu hits must actually be their bowls. I stared at their lovely chalkboard menu for over 10 minutes overwhelmed by the delicious sounding options. I will be back to try those now that the arepa taste test is out of the way. Lastly, the drinks menu is exciting. Besides the fact that they have passionfruit, MY FAVORITE. They also have some typically Colombian juices too. I got to try lulo (a green orange like citrus)here, which I had never heard of before, but really liked! All in all, La Vecina is definitely a nice addition to the Steinway corridor. And if they perhaps advertise their food and drink specials more, it could help to distinguish itself among the hundreds of storefronts on this busy street. The space is also large enough to be a small event space too, oxymoron aside. And there's a few TV's, so this could be a sports night spot as well too. Just happened to be on steinway and walked passed this store front. I am typically used to Venezuelan arepas but when I saw Colombian i was Intruiged. They have a great selection to choose from chicken beef or pork and vegetarian options too. Dont be shy to ask to substitute a protein either ! I had La Suegra it was roasted pork with feta and romaine and arugula. The juice literally dripped down my hands and mouth it was a flavor explosion. Also you must try one of their juices. I opted for the Lulo which is a typical Colombian fruit. It was sweet and refreshing. Prices are decent and food comes out fast and fresh. Definitly will be back to try some of their other arepas. The passion fruit sangria is delicious and the arepas are yummy. The cachapa (sweet ones) way better than the Paisa (savory ones) but both are good nontheless. I only wish they had dessert and that they had avocado because they were out the day I went. But I'll definitely come back to try more stuff! read more

Reallly really good. I got it yesterday for the first time I was literally salivating it was so good. I got a limeade with mint. Sooo good. I got a byo bowl. Spring mix, shredded chicken (so tender!), pico de Gallo, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, sweet plantains (best freaking plaintains I've everrrrr had soft inside slight slight crunch on the edges of the outside), and guac. Omg the guac deserves its own paragraph. Best guac I've had. I got it again today... lol. I'm not in Astoria often so I haddd to. They were out of guac :( but we very accommodating offering me avocado, a drink, and a sauce in place of it since I had already paid. I tried the pesto kale sauce, it kinda ruined my bowl I was sad about that. It wasn't bad it just wasn't for my taste pallet I can see other people I know liking it. But yeah deff worth the money so delicious and very nice people. Don't skip out on the guac or plantains! read more

Wow this place was amazing. Looks like it's a hole in the wall joint, but also doesn't that often guarantee it's a great spot?! The cachapa and combo meal we had was 5/5! If you get a combo platter, plan to share it with someone bc it's huge lol The croquettes were ok.. we didn't prefer the sauce that came with it, but asked for the ketchup Mayo sauce they serve with the meal instead and it was great. read more
Surprised they're not busier, but I guess people are still hesitant about indoor dining. I do hope this place survives as the staff was wonderful, the food was tasty and fresh and the drinks were strong enough to make you happy. We visited during a rainy night, so they were not super busy, but there were still quite a few tables with people eating. The service was prompt and the food arrived piping hot and delicious, so much so, my friends order food to go. We'll definitely come back read more

This place seems more known for the nighttime bar scene but it's a mellow option for a workweek lunch. There is a M-F lunch special and I paid less than $15 for a table service lunch! How often do you get that in NYC?? The arepa was very tasty. Portion size was admittedly not huge but it's perfect for a quick solo meal during the workday. Only complaint is that the music was a bit too loud...you should probably turn it down for daytime. read more

UPDATE: I have been to La Vecina over 10 times in the course of a year, including organizing my friend's birthday lunch in-house pre-pandemic and ordering their catering service for some amazing essential workers during the pandemic. La Vecina, the owner Henry, and the entire staff never disappoints! If I could give them 10 stars, I would. La Vecina always has amazing service, delicious food, and tasty drinks. More recently, I was blown away by their catering service. The owner, Henry, was my point of contact and walked me through the catering process with ease and clarity. He not only was willing to trek it out to Far Rockaway for the catering destination during COVID, but offered to type up and print out a personalized note from me to the essential workers. They all LOVED the food and service. Thank you La Vecina! You have a loyal customer in me and I will ALWAYS sing your praises!! read more

TL; DR: I'm actually sad that I seem to be one of the few odd folks out since I have been waiting to try La Vecina and wanted SO badly to love them. Maybe I tried them on an off day? But, from what I've tried, this is 2.5 stars rounded up (in thanks for them being open during COVID and all packaging being on point). Other than a few very select items, not seeing why I'd take business from the mom & pop Latin restaurants that remind me of being back in their home countries when La Vecina didn't bring that Colombian awesomeness I was looking for. Inside the arepa: Splurged and worked my way through (sampling a little of everything fresh when it arrived): - Calentado w/chorizo (breakfast bowl with their red bean & cilantro rice): perfectly fine. You shouldn't expect spicy chorizo from a Colombian joint. Seems like they take the traditional approach of cooking it in water then letting the sausages continue to cook in their own fat. A quick grill after that would definitely help bring out some flavor. The eggs were fine. Didn't care for the rice as it was more grainy than fluffy, and I didn't like the herb/spice balance. It was a hearty portion to match the borderline hefty price. But bland overall. Needed the sauces. - Tres Leches: nice size piece to meet the higher than usual price for this very simple cake. But the top half of the cake was stale, which isn't easy since it's soaked in a ton of milk. Disappointing. - Elote (charred corn): one of the few select items I'm still thinking about. Absolutely bomb and would order again in a heartbeat. - Yuca Croquettes: they were fine. I don't think delivery serves them well. You need these fresh out of the fryer to get a shot at some ooey gooey cheesiness before the yucca sucks up all the cheesy fat. But they repurposed really well to make huevos y patatas a few days later. - Sweet corn arepa (w/pickled onions, crispy kale, cotija, crispy shrimp): the positive is that you're getting a ton of food in what is more a mini bowl than a proper arepa. Which is good, since this thing was just north of $10. But I was disappointed since every arepa I saw pictured was in tradition "sandwich" style, wrapped well so everything held together and you could get everything in each bite. This was a very thin arepa on the btm of the container with everything piled up. And the arepa didn't hold shape when I tried to make a complete bite, which could be due to how thin the arepa was. Arepa flavor was nice. Really big and perfectly fried shrimp. But the crispy kale was more greasy and chewy than crispy (seemed like the oil wasn't hot enough, and they didn't pat the grease off well enough). If you wrap your head around mini bowl, it would be a solid buy (arguably a steal with all that shrimp). Did not a great arepa make. - Latin Bowl (w/garlic rice, carne asada, black beans, pickled onions, cotija, pernil): That garlic rice is phenom. And the carne asada bomb. I'd order those two with the black beans and some cotija again in a heartbeat. But the pernil? Flavor was fine. But there is much better in the area. And it was a bit dry. Black beans fine. Nothing special. For value (it was $20-ish)? For around that same price point you can get a similar dish with 3-4 meats + more rice and beans at area competitors and all the components are flavorful with nothing dried out... - Salsa rosada, salsa verde, y aji colombiano: all were good. Not sure I'd pay for the rosada again, as I can make better in my kitchen. But the verde was awesome and aji colombiano nice. Gonna think about waiting a bit and possibly give them a try again...but, for now, not a place I can recommend to anyone who is in the know about this kind of cuisine. read more
Very friendly service and delicious food. I had a custom bowl with garlic rice, ropa vieja, grilled corn, and pico de gallo and a ropa vieja arepa, both which are filling and delicious. The downside is that you have to pay extra for sauces. I got the pink sauce which tastes like thousand island salad dressing. I was a little disappointed that pork belly was no longer on the menu. read more

Amazing!! - The owner of the arepa shop is super friendly. As a vegetarian, i initially struggled with my options but the owner gave me a number of great recommendations. including the arepa I went with. It blew my mind. I had the friend artichoke arepa with krispy kale, peppers and parm cheese. OMG. I don't usually like kale (like at all) but this kale was cooked with such an amazing taste and texture. I also had a "Campesina" arepa (made of sweet corn) and I added plantain for my own personal indulgence. I'd highly recommend it! I finally topped off my meal with a fresh watermelon limeade! So amazing. This place is located in Steinway, so it can get a little lost since a lot of other places are going out of business, but if you decide to pop your head into this little place, you won't be disappointed. I plan to go there again as soon as I have a few hundred calories to spare. read more

I hate writing reviews. They're boring and it feels like work. I'm writing this review despite the deep feeling of regret I feel growing in my chest as I begin to realize this could potentially be a long one. Damnit, why do I have to report experiences so accurately? I have only ordered delivery from La Vecina but every single order has been perfect, early or on time, and delicious. I've ordered from them 10 times between early January and April. I can't tell if the delivery people are just naturally friendly or if im slowly buying someone a new car. To the food: I typically order an arepa and an order of the salchipapas. The salchipapas are dope. The hot dogs are fried the perfect amount, fries too. It is then garnished in cojita cheese, and one of their sauces. The arepas are excellent in my opinion. I grew up eating them and I think Vecina did something cool. Their arepas have that traditional flavor and texture that you want, but in seasoning and execution they have really elevated it to something special I haven't had before. So now I'm ordering their bowls when I'm home for lunch. They are massive and my favorite order so far has been lechon with pesto infused brown rice, pickled jalapeños, cojita cheese and red beans. It also comes with a spring mix. I don't think the spring mix adds anything. I'd like the preference to have spinach, or arugula or some mixture of something with more interesting leafs. Anyway - this is the end of my review. I'm exhausted. I feel like this energy could have been better spent somewhere else. I've just been so happy with every meal I've gotten from Vecina and it didn't feel right not making that known. Finally - done. read more

Visited this spot with a bunch of friends and instantly fell in love with the overall quality this joint has to offer. I had an artichoke arepa myself with salchipapas and yuca croquette on the side. Loved the fried but not greasy artichoke among the generous greens on my arepa. My husband had a pork belly arepa all by himself, the pork belly was tender and brought a hint of charredness in it, it was juicy and piping hot when it first served. Other 3 friends had a bowl to each their own. The bowl looked great. I'll probably return to try their bowl selection next time. And most importantly the helpfulness of Stephanie, she did a great job educating us with our lack of knowledge in choosing our soul food for the night. I started following this place on instagram, and after the delicious looking pictures I knew I had to pay them a visit. I've had their food twice and had a great experience both times. Their food is simply high quality and delicious. Though the food can be recognized as fast food, it certainly does not have that feel. I hope they get much more traffic than what they usually get because they certainly deserve it. The flavor is there, the creativity is there, and the service is there. This is a great place to take your friends if you want to look good. read more

Guys, don't look at the number of reviews because they just opened 6 months ago! This place is amazing, I'm Spanish and this are the best arepas I've ever had so far. Come during the weekend because only then, they have fresh burgers and Sancocho (it's a very homey soup, Friday's are chicken, Saturday's fish and Sundays beef) but definitely have to try their arepas! Also try out their freshly squeezed lemonades with fruits in it! I live an hour away from here but this place is so worth the travel. I also met the owners and they are so nice and passionate, they have really put thought and love in every single item In their menu. read more

By far the worst cholado I've had in years, I have not had anything else from this place but, I'm hoping this is the only thing they are not good at. Do NOT get a cholado here, it is very overpriced. Has little to no fruit, the peaches are what seem to be canned. Let it sit for less than 3 minutes and it will turn into a white like mixture. Do NOT waste your $8.75 on this! read more

We used to love this place! We came for lunch and my daughter ordered the Steinway Bowl. The shredded pork was simply terrible, it tasted sour. My daughter did not even eat it because she was afraid of getting sick. By then she lost her appetite and did not want anything else. I brought it to the attention of the counter person and i advised her that my daughter lost her appetite and did not want anything else. She said not a problem and to my surprise I was charged. I wasn't expecting to be charge for something that was not edible but apparently the manager told the counter person that the item had to be paid for. I am extremely disappointed with this customer service because we loved this place but with this poor quality food and on top of it forced to pay for it, I doubt we will ever come back. Such a shame. Since we were forced to pay, we were also force to take something else that most likely my daughter won't eat. I work at a casual restaurant and the managers and owners removed items for a lot less than poor quality. Too bad we will not be back. Watch out with the sour pork!!!
