Amazing food, very dramatic yet chill atmosphere - once you get in. It's the restaurant that launched 1000 expresses, and deservedly legendary. But "express" this is not. This was our third time visiting the restaurant, and each time we were waiting for over 30 minutes while tables sat empty. It doesn't seem to make a difference if we have a reservation or not - we tried it both ways - and the lack of interest in getting people seated is traumatic. Once we were seated, we let our server know that between waiting 45 minutes for our reservation and 35 minutes for our table, we were in a bit of a hurry, and put in our order promptly. Soup came 20 minutes later. Crab Ragoons came 20 minutes after that. Entrees wandered out 20 minutes after that. We asked twice for our bill, please, and 20 minutes later we got our bill and fortune cookies. And even though we had our card out and tried to hand it to her, our server started taking the order at the next table over. We were able to short-circuit that by paying at the counter like take-out commoners, but it was really not our plan to spend 3 hours at dinner. Panda Inn truly did not disappoint! My wife is from Altadena and she would always tell me about Panda Inn and how it's the origin for Panda Express. Last week we were able to bring our family for dinner! My wife order the cooked sushi, sorry I forgot the name of it BUT IT WAS GREAT!! We had Shrimp Lo Mein, Orange Chicken, Shrimp Fried Rice, Beef Fried Rice and it was delicious!! I have a mushroom allergy and they were so nice to ensure they didn't have it in the food. So I finally made it to the famed Panda Inn. I've been wanting to check it out for a while, especially since it's the birthplace of Panda Express. Luckily, I now work nearby, so I was finally able to give it a try. The place has been recently updated, and the dining room is spacious with a modern feel. I sat at the bar for a few drinks and a meal. Unfortunately, there's no happy hour, which was a bit of a letdown. Both the drinks and food are a little pricey for what you get. I ordered the famous orange chicken because you have to on your first visit. It was definitely better than Panda Express, but you're also paying about three times as much. Overall, I came for the history and to say I've been. That said, there are plenty of better Chinese food options in the area at a lower price point. Still, if it's on your list, it's worth checking out at least once. So if you gotta go you gotta go. read more

Delicious. Our friends took us to celebrate our anniversary and the meal was so good. This was the first time eating at this location and everything was wonderful. Cocktails were very nice, food was delicious and our server was prompt and attentive. We had about 8 different dishes. The highlight were the phoenix chicken and the Mongolian beef. We used to go to the old restaurant quite often and it has totally changed. My husband and I took advantage of the lunch menu that is available from Monday to Friday from 11-3 PM. See my photos with prices. I chose the Spicy Tofu Eggplant. That comes with a choice of Egg Drop Soup or Hot and Sour Soup, an eggroll and white or steamed rice. My husband chose the Orange Chicken. We both chose the spicy Hot and Sour Soup. We shared our entrees. First of all I hate to say it, but I like the eggplant and tofu and orange chicken a bit better at Panda Express. Call me crazy, but I am honest. The service started out great, but by the time we paid our bill it dropped off. No more warm and fuzzy if you get my gist by the time we left an hour later. My first impressions were very bad. I called the day before to make reservations. I think it was around 4pm. I was put on hold for 15 minutes with annoying on hold music. No one came back, so I hung up. Called back and was put on hold again for 5 minutes with no music. Hung up and called back and spoke to someone right away. Yay! The parking structure in the back was nice. There's dedicated Panda Inn parking spots on the second level. And, they validate the parking! The inside was very nicely decorated. The round table in the center of the room moves and rocks slightly. The chairs are very comfortable. Okay, let's get to the food. Excellent!!! We had orange chicken, beef & broccoli, honey walnut shrimp, and cream cheese/crab wontons. White or brown rice is included with the entrees. Honestly great food. I like a lot of Chinese restaurants from mama Lu to mayflower to Tao and everything in-between . I think the service here was great for the most part. Jacob was amazing and kind. Always had a smile on his face and was warm and welcoming. I wish I got the name of this other lady as she seemed unhappy and upset as if she was rushing to get people out fast. She was the lady that asked if we wanted our leftovers boxed and the one that took our empty plates . I should have asked for her name but I missed it. But aside from her all the others were kind and nice. The food was great and the ambiance was nice. Very interesting and aesthetically pleasing interior . Definitely coming back. Panda Inn in Pasadena is slightly further out than the main parts of the city. There's plenty of validated parking and street parking for the large prettily decorated restaurant that also has a patio. The staff is friendly and moves quickly. We over ordered but were happy to have leftovers. The orange chicken was great. We opted to get kung pow shrimp as opposed to chicken. The chow fun (with chicken) was an item the table next to us asked about. The Mushu Pork didn't quite live up to my childhood memories but was tasty. The honey walnut shrimp was easily my favorite dish. The shrimp was cooked well, and the sweetness was balanced perfectly without being overpowering. The flavors came together really well, and I wanted another plate! The chow mein was also good, with a nice flavor and that classic comfort food quality that never disappoints. The beef and broccoli was solid too. Nothing particularly unique, but it was cooked well and tasted good. One dish that surprised me was the spicy beef salad. I was a little skeptical at first since it was a salad, but it ended up being one of the highlights of the meal. The combination of lettuce, flavorful beef, and the crispy strips on top added a great texture and flavor. It was probably my second favorite dish after the honey walnut shrimp. I waited so many years for Panda Inn to reopen after the remodeling and have been coming here at least once a week since then. The food is always top tier, servers and managers are always very nice and friendly, it never disappoints. Flavor on every dish is always on point. The braised short rib and mango duck salad are always my favorite, but I also love the sweet and sour pork, honey walnut shrimp, the sizzling rice soup, the sea bass, upside down noodles, the stir fried green beans, I also love the molten lava cake for dessert, everything is always so delicious it's hard to pick a favorite! I've also tried their omakase and it was a great experience, I love the spicy tuna hand roll, and the fish from sushi bar is very fresh, manager said it's flown in directly from Japan, I can't remember if he said every week? Everything was delicious, I would want to do omakase again one of these days when I can take a longer lunch again haha love coming here and every time I look forward to trying a new dish. I dine here every so often, since I live nearby. Most recently I tried their DineLA lunch menu. This was a day after I did DineLA at Yakiya across the street, which is also owned by the Cherng family. I booked a reservation at opening time, just as I did at Yakiya. And like Yakiya, Panda seemed short-staffed early on. My waiter was attentive, and there were several chefs at the sushi counter, but the food took quite some time to come out, which would have been an issue if I was a worker on a lunch break. That being said, the food was good to great. The DineLA menu comes with 2 apps--tuna with crispy onions and spicy pickled cabbage. Both were tasty; the albacore tuna was a bit haphazardly sliced. My lychee and Jasmine green iced tea was great. Next there was a choice of 6 entrees. I chose my go-to, Honey Walnut Shrimp. This version was fab, clearly freshly made. The shrimp were still hot and crisp, the sauce not yet making the shrimp breading gloppy, as happens at Panda Express. There were loads of candied walnuts, plus some slices of honeydew melon as garnish! I would say in general that any dish that's offered both at Panda Inn and Panda Express will taste better at Panda Inn because it is made to order, and sometimes comes with additional garnish. It will be more costly at Panda, however. Dessert was a choice between cheesecake or rice pudding. I chose the Japanese-style cheesecake, which was more cake-y and less cheese-y than a traditional cheesecake, but fine. There was ice cream on top. A fine lunch. read more

The food and experience just wasn't there. Our waiter was kind and helpful, but it took quite a long time to get our food. Something was off in the kitchen the night of 1/25/2026. The wonton soup was bland and cold. So items we were looking forward to that are in La Palma, are not offered at the Pasadena location. If you find a panda inn location you Rick with, keep going to that one. Plenty of tables available, but still had to wait awhile. They kept coming back to us offering us the worst seats. We finally took the patio, which has one tiny fan and is miserable to sit out on. Service was extremely slow. Food took forever to come out. When it did come out, half of the food was lukewarm. Did they wait till all of it was finished and have our other dishes just sitting? Also, no water refills the entire time. Once we were done, it took forever to get the check and to-go boxes. We even had to ask for them ourselves. I love the atmosphere at Panda Inn! The decor and layout sort of reminds me of Flemings. The service is generally pretty good - unless they're super slammed. We normally get the orange chicken, kung pao shrimp, garlic green beans, Mongolian beef, and eggplant tofu. The food is so savory and delicious! A tad greasy, but that's just the way this food goes. Overall our server was very nice and organized, which was great because we had a large party of 9 and wound up spending quite a bit of money on cocktails, appetizers and food. But unfortunately when my guava margarita arrived it wasn't completely full, about 3/4 of an inch lower than the rim. My dinner companions' drinks were all up to the rim, in fact 2 sloshed out a little, so I asked the server about it and she insisted that every drink was measured out properly and it was just the glass. This was impossible because my one of my friends had the same exact glass, we put them side by side to verify. His was full to the top and mine wasn't. She refused to replace or alter the drink. At $16 you expect a full glass. And to make matters worse with cocktail was pretty meh, weak and nothing unique. Her refusal pretty much ruined the rest of the dinner for me. It would have been so easy for her to make her client happy by adding a bit of mixer to it. I'm not usually a fan of Chinese food, but a friend insisted we try Panda Inn after its recent renovation. I reluctantly agreed--and I'm so glad I did. I enjoyed it so much that I went back again with my family. First, the restaurant itself is beautiful--modern, inviting, and thoughtfully redesigned. More importantly, the food was outstanding. I typically shy away from the sweet, heavy sauces common in Chinese cuisine, but every dish we tried was balanced, flavorful, and genuinely delicious. Across two visits, we ordered the Panda Beef, Orange Chicken, Mongolian Beef, shrimp and lobster dumplings, chow fun, shrimp lo mein, honey walnut shrimp, and the mango and duck salad. My favorite dish by far was the dumplings--so flavorful and perfectly prepared that I honestly liked them better than Din Tai Fung. I truly have nothing negative to say about a single dish. The cocktails were also excellent and thoughtfully crafted. Service was attentive and friendly throughout. This was our first visit since Panda Inn's remodel, so it's definitely been a while! It was a busy Sunday night, but we only waited about 20 minutes for a table for two. Panda Inn has a modern, upscale vibe that caters more to American diner. Forks are the default setting, and you have to request chopsticks, which is the opposite from traditional Chinese restaurants. Our server was friendly and accommodating; when we mentioned that our table was uneven, he quickly moved us to a more spacious one, which we really appreciated. We share the Lobster Crispy Noodles, Steamed Chilean Sea Bass and Seaweed with Oyster Mushroom as an appetizer. We also ordered a pot of jasmine hot tea to warm up since it was a chilly evening. The appetizer came out quickly, though the entrées took a bit longer--but the sea bass was absolutely worth the wait. It was perfectly steamed, tender, and easily the best one we've ever had. The lobster crispy noodles were decent, though the lobster meat wasn't as bouncy or fresh as we're used to at traditional Chinese spots, seems likely from frozen. Overall, it was a lovely dinner date. I still like their signature chocolate-covered fortune cookies at the end of the meal. Keep in mind that the dish does have more chili flakes than Panda Express. The popcorn chicken was our appetizer and it was a great was to start our meal. Despite the dish not including any dipping sauce, the chicken itself was flavored with 5 spice and had a nice crunch. The portions were very generous! The peach yuzu highball was very refreshing. However, I was missing the peach flavor as it was stronger on the yuzu. Service: 2/5 The service is what lost a few points for me. Our server rarely came by. However, when she did she didn't seem like she was in a good mood. When we needed to ask for something, we felt hesitate due to her body language and mood. Here's what I tried: Salt & Pepper Crispy Calamari - Well seasoned and crispy. I'd say above average Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken - On par with what you can get from any kind of boba shop. Nothing more, nothing less, which could be an issue for some people. Beef Short Rib with Brussel Sprouts - Very tender and tasty. It comes with a variety of sauces and is really great to share. Orange Chicken - I was a little surprised with this one. At the minimum you'd expect it to be just like from a Panda Express. But it wasn't, it was worse. Excessive breading. This location was SO good. I hadn't been here since after their renovations but it felt like I was at one of those resort restaurants so basically felt like a little vacation. Food was delicious as always! They had a different looking menu at this location too. One of my favourite fast food places in the USA is Panda Express, so when I found out that the original Panda location and the place it all started at was located only a half an hour away in Pasadena, it was a must try immediately. My wife and I came here last Sunday for lunch and it was a much different experience then I expected. For parking, it's a big parking garage located behind the building and the restaurant validates parking. I knew this was a big upgrade to Panda Express, but I did not expect a beautiful restaurant like this. This place is absolutely massive on the inside and offers a ton of seating. I was absolutely blown away by how cool the art and glass inside were, super cool Panda stuff. The menu here has versions of all the Panda Express favourites you are used too, but also a ton of different Chinese food options as well. I absolutely had to order the orange chicken to see what the O.G. tastes like, but I also had to order the Taiwanese chicken since that's the best form of the chicken around. I didn't expect to say this, but I want to start with the orange chicken and say that I honestly prefer the fast food version to the $24 version here. The sauce was good and so was the chicken, but I honestly think the cheaper/fast food version does in fact taste better. The Taiwanese chicken gets a thumbs up from me as well, but I will say it's not the best I've had, even in the Los Angeles area. Overall, my lunch at Panda Inn was pretty solid and an overall good experience. The Pasadena Panda Inn recently went through a major glow up and my family and I went to visit for lunch. The food served here is not all authentic Chinese, but is mainly inspired by Taiwanese, Japanese and Chinese cuisine. They even serve sushi here. They did a great job of renovating the new space, it's absolutely beautiful and I love the bar area and how spacious the whole restaurant feels. There is a big multi story parking lot in the back so parking isn't an issue. I heard they plan on building an apartment building in the back, so we shall see how that affects the parking in the future. Service was friendly and my family thought the food was good. We ordered: Chicken Mu Shu wraps Taiwanese Popcorn chicken Wonton Crisps Spicy Nachos Hot & Sour Soup Panda Beef Honey Walnut Shrimp Sweet & Pungent Chicken Braised String Beans Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice Because my kids are allergic to nuts, they were nice enough to put the walnuts of the Honey Walnut shrimp on the side. The mu shu wraps were so good, and the hot & sour soup just brought back so many nostalgic vibes. The family thought the pork rice was only ok. My only complaint is the Sweet & Pungent Chicken dish. It looks great when it arrives to the table like you're getting a lot of chicken, but is disappointing once you eat it. It was made of thinly sliced chicken (think hot pot thin slices) covered in batter and fried, then tossed in a sweet & sour sauce. I could barely taste any chicken, so I basically ordered a big pile of fried batter. I didn't enjoy this dish at all. I love tea but wasn't willing to pay $8 a cup. I was so excited to try this place, after all it's hype on social media as well as a podcast I listened to on the history of Panda Express. I had been to the Glendale location as a small child, so I had fond memories of their white chocolate-coated fortune cookies. The servers were patient with my large party. We started by ordering our drinks. The Sour w Absinthe was a small serving but refreshing. As for the Mai Tai, it was well endowed with alcohol and syrupy in the best way a rum drink can be. My parents are regulars, so they took the reins on placing our order. We ordered the Honey Walnut Shrimp, Mongolian Beef, Sweet & Pungent Chicken, and Lo Mein. The Honey Walnut Shrimp was everything you love about the original, with an extra oomph through the chunks of melon. The Mongolian Beef was melt-in-your-mouth soft in its savory, brown gravy. The Sweet & Pungent Chicken was a much better option to trade for an orange chicken. It was lighter and more sour rather than oppressively sticky and sweet. As for the Lo Mein: dare i say it was better than Din Tai Fung? The chicken pieces were incredibly tender and the sauce soaked up by the thick noodles was flavorful. With such a well-designed ambiance to go along with all this, I would recommend coming here to everyone I know. read more
