When I went, there was a mix-up with another patient, and they had a problem with the insurance, though I had checked previously, and they clearly accepted my insurance. And their internet was down, so I had to wait for quite a while after my appointment time. Then at the exam, the optometrist failed to tell me something important about the prescription. So that was bad, neglectful, and not communicative on his part. Later, I went back for something, and the receptionist with the long dark hair and glasses was rude and curt. And the person without the glasses (Dr. Lee?) said something extremely insulting to me, and that was unacceptable. They must've been stereotyping me, since my "type" has wide socioeconomic variation in this city, though I'm well-educated, from a family with many professionals from elite schools. I called again for something, and the receptionist was super rude and impatient again, and abruptly hung up. I called back politely, and she admonished me that I had to wait for her to contact the doctor about it. But she had hung up abruptly without saying so. Multiple employees at this place were rude, curt, biased, classist (mistaken), non-responsive, went against their word, and poorly behaved. I wouldn't recommend this place, unless maybe you're a favored type (white?), or very attractive/charismatic. They all have heritage from the same continent as me, but they're clearly biased and disgusted against what they think I am. They haven't had that many current reviews, and it appears earlier employees might have been better behaved, ran the place better, and were less hateful towards certain people. read more

It pains me to leave this review. The optometrist was kind, but I was left with an overall feeling of inexperience and outdated practices after my exam. I have been getting scleral lens for the past five years. I had no issues with my previous optometrist, I tried Pacific Rim because it was closer to my home. I was taken aback when I received the air puff test when they tested for my eye pressure. I haven't had an air puff test in years since my previous optometrist switched to updated equipment. The rest of the exam was pretty standard, but when it came to insurance, it seemed they were uncertain about how the coverage worked. They proceeded to call my previous optometrist for more information about the process and told me it would be awhile before my contacts came in. I waited two months and no word, so I called the office and the clerk told me there were no contacts ordered. She then said someone would call me back the following day. It's been two weeks and still no return call. They seem very disorganized and I'm disappointed by how unprofessional the office is. I've never been ghosted by an optometrist before. read more

If you need your glasses in a reasonable amount of time do not shop here! I've used Pacific Rims for at least 10 years. Each time I regret it. While the Dr. is okay, and the staff is friendly enough, the amount of time it actually takes to get your new glasses is way too long. If it was a one time thing I could understand. But this is the 3rd time it has taken over a month. Right now I'm going on six weeks without my paid for glasses. Phone calls go unanswered and when I go into the office to check it is blamed on the lab and the promised followup never happens. Next time I'll be going somewhere else. My boyfriend found out about it first and raved about how before they charged him anything, they worked with his insurance to try to get him to pay as little as possible, which worked bc he ended up paying very little for a whole years worth of contacts. They were all so ridiculously kind and patient with me throughout the whole process from the initial eye exam to teaching me how to put it in my eye correctly. Pacific Rims is just another reason why I love my neighborhood. Being blind as an eyeless bat and having some money in the FSA to burn (visually challenged and big pimpin', baybee!), I decided to go to Pacific Rims for an eye exam and a pair of new frames. My boyfriend had gone a few months back after he accidentally decimated his old pair of frames through an "unfortunate accident," and had raved about them. Scheduling an appointment was super easy - I did it online and had a call a couple days in advance to confirm. Dr. Dong is really a treat. I don't normally refer to people with such unbearably hokey terminology, but I really don't have any other way to describe him. He's nice, he's funny, he's knowledgeable, and it's glaringly obvious (get it? an eye joke?) that he loves what he does. As someone who's normally super squeamish about getting things in, around, or in the same city as her eyes, going to the eye doctor has always been a veritable hell. Dr. Dong guided me through the whole process - both with information, and amicable chit-chat - to the point where I really actually felt that it was all going to be okay. And it was! He's also got a pretty cool machine that takes pictures of the inside of your eye. They can check for all kinds of lovely things like the very early stages of cancer or macular degeneration. Plus, he e-mails you pictures of the INSIDE OF YOUR EYE. I saved those puppies on Dropbox so I can whip them out at parties. Then I got to go through the frame selection process. This is normally fun for me, but the women helping me pick my frames out made it even more enjoyable. I brought my boyfriend, and tried on a bunch of things that I never would've expected I'd like. They were very patient with the fact that I suck at making decisions, and I came away with a pair that are huge and chunky and plastic and purple - all things I never thought I could pull off. They were ready when I was told they would be, and they were expertly manipulated to fit my face. I haven't had a problem since, but if you ever feel any discomfort you can take them right back in to get them refitted. I recently purchased my new rims here, but do not go here for their optometrist...so my review will focus solely on my new pair of glasses! I was really surprised by how much selection this business has managed to squeeze into what is a really tiny store! I tried on as many glass frames here as I did at any store twice as big, and probably more, because they had a lot more styles that I liked! The two women who work here are very friendly and helpful, and weren't pushy. They were cool about giving me their opinions about which frames looked better on me without showing favoritism towards more expensive ones, and when it came time to pay, worked with my insurance to the fullest extent they could. My glasses were ready in less time than was predicted, which was wonderful, since my old frames had broken and I really needed the new pair! While a few small adjustments had to be made to the fit to make them work for me, my new glasses were otherwise perfect! I never, ever, ever write reviews. Whether I love a place or hate it. Seriously this is my first one. But Pacific Rim just saved my life. I moved to SF from the east coast a year ago, and had to find all new doctors. Pacific Rim was conveniently located near my home in the Sunset District, so I went there September 2013, and had a very pleasant experience. It's now November 2014, I wake up this morning and realize that I have exactly one pair of contacts left (irresponsible, I know). I walk into Pacific Rim on my way to work, tell them my dilemma. They set me up with an appointment 2 days from this writing, and load me up with emergency contacts and solution! Everyone in that office is super sweet, caring, and professional. I couldn't recommend a better eye doctor, even if you don't live in the neighborhood. Considering the fact that I don't have to wear glasses for the next couple of weeks as I wait for contacts now, I wish I could give them 100 stars! read more

Made an appt online, arrived on time waiting outside the gate with a mask !!and the demon optometrist left me there for 10 minutes on the coldest rainiest day of year. She finally opens the door, and I say "Oh good" then complains that she's the only one there and what do I want. I say i have an appt. She then says she's busy with a customer and I yelled at her. I tell her I didn't yell at her and she says I acted like I've been waiting. I said I have been waiting and ask her if she's ready to do this since seems to have an attitude about having to do her job. She then tries to backpedal and claims again how busy she is. Honey Honey Honey, your lack of staffing is not my problem it's yours. Own it. Don't make appointments if you can't handle them. I went into Pacific Rims yesterday just planning on taking a peek at what they had to offer. I was trying to find a new optometrist in the area so I could update my prescription. I walked in and was instantly greeted by a friendly staff member despite the fact that it was busy. I let them know that I just came in to look at frames and they were more than happy to get me started on my quest to find the perfect pair. It took me forever to pick out frames and the staff was more than courteous. They made suggestions, pulled out tons of frame choices, and gave me honest opinions. I ended up getting an exam that day and ordering a pair of new glasses. Needless to say I left very happy and satisfied. The staff was amazing and the Dr was very friendly and explained everything to me. Usually I get and eye exam and wonder what they are doing for each step. I agree with the other 2 reviewers that the opticians will absolutely tell you if the frames you adore will make you look like a nerd or a fashionista. Good customer service! The lab that made my new glasses scratched up the frames, so Pacific Rims took them back without question, and offered to get them re-done in a jiffy or allow me to choose a different frame. Really great selection of frames. The opticians are great because they'll help you select which frames would look really good on you. (See my profile pic). Dr. Dong's optometric equipment seem ancient though, but they work fine. He alarmed me when told that I had a dent on my optic disk... could be a warning sign for glaucoma. DAMN i'm hella scurred. (I'll get a 2nd opinion at UCSF.) My peripheral vision tests came out normal though. Other than that, Dr. Dong would prefer if you use brand name contacts solution (... I felt hella crunchy using the cheapo Target brands). He'll give you a lecture on the importance of cleaning your contacts with good solution. After all, we only have 1 set of eyes... might as well take great care of them! oh yeah--they take VSP insurance... ended up saving loads of money! AND THEY REMEMBER YOUR NAME... even after 6 months! (well, they remembered mine). read more

Not a fan of this place. I went there because they took my insurance. First, they have you fill out the application as a first time customer. That's fine. Then, at the end, they want you to sign that you have received the HIPAA Privacy Form. I asked them where that was, and they kind of flash it in front of me and just say "It just says we won't share your information". Not a very good explanation. I assume it was their only form, as it was in one of those page protectors and even that seemed quite worn out. Then they shove me in to the doctor's room and continue eating their lunch. So here I am in the doctor's office. Dr. Dong introduces himself then goes into how it's difficult to be a grandpa. really?! what does that even mean? He then starts talking about his health and how health is related to vision. This took up like 15 minutes of the eye check. Then he makes me enter in my email so he can forward me some YouTube video. like wtf?! Anyways, after all that, i'm not going back. I find them really insensitive and just interested in getting you in and getting you out. Their eyeglass election isn't that great either. You can find better, cheaper selections at Costco. Maybe I'll just go there. It's cheaper and the doctor is nicer. read more

I moved to the area and needed new contacts, so I found this place on Yelp. It was easy to get an appointment, and everyone is super friendly. Dr Chan is great - she answered all my questions and explained things about my eyes that I never knew. She recommended I get daily contacts, and I hesitated because of the price. However, after doing the trials, the front office managed to get a large rebate for buying the full year upfront, AND she went the extra mile by making an extra claim with my insurance for medical necessity due to my unusual prescription, which actually got approved! Now I'm paying just a tiny fraction of what my contacts normally cost. No other place has done that for me. I highly recommend this place! read more

Dr. Chan is awesome and very observant. She noticed that my pupils were two different sizes and referred me to a neuro opthamologist to get it checked out. My PCP had noticed this the week before, but didn't suggest doing anything about it. I wouldn't have if I hadn't seen Dr. Chan. This is really important because while luckily I ended up being fine (am in xx% of the population that just gets this sometimes), it can be a symptom of several more serious issues, like a brain tumor. I trust Dr. Chan to do a very thorough exam and will always see her for my yearly appointments. read more

I had been a patient of Dr Dong's for a few years and thought his care was Okay. Then I switched to contacts and was extremely disappointed by his greed and lack of professionalism. After wearing contacts for only a month I was experiencing a problem and asked if I could come in to see if I had in fact removed my contact. My eye was very red and irritated and I couldn't tell if the lens was out. Dr Dong sighed at my request, paused, and then asked if I had Blue Cross. When I told him I had Kaiser he said, " You'll need to go to Kaiser, if you had Blue Cross I could bill them for $100.00, but I can't bill Kaiser". When I expressed my frustration, ie: I live two blocks from Pacific Rims, he's my optometrist and I only want him to check if the contact is out, etc, his response was "Okay, we'll remove you from our patient list". I now have a new optometrist. read more

Everyone I have talked to is so pleasant, patient, and enthusiastic to address any question or concern. This was my first time here, but it was seemless and quick.
