Every time I come here I get good customer service and friendly advice on the eyewear. The doctors and staff are great!

So grateful for this practice! Dr. Quan is so patient and skilled; I chose him for his dry eye specialty, and his interventions have helped so much. The office staff are always so chill and friendly, great atmosphere in here. Happy to have found this office so close to my house! read more

Review for glasses only, I didn't have an eye exam here. Fast service and great communication. I had my appointment in December to try to make the most of my insurance and they were very understanding. Great selection of glasses. Have been coming the past few years and I'll be back! read more

I've been coming to Visionarium for so many years I'm not even sure how long it's been. I think I started when I was in middle or high school and I'm well into adulthood now. 15 years? I started seeing Dr. Quan then eventually saw other doctors here when he wasn't available but he's still my go-to doctor. He's always pleasant and patient with my curiosity about this or that. I regularly feel that he answers just enough but he usually humors my questions. When I first started coming here I remember getting glasses made from his prescription but it felt funny so I went back. Turns out seeing 20/20 was too intense for me so he dropped my prescription by a little bit and that fixed it! He's been doing this for me ever since and my glasses are always comfortable. I moved to the east coast a few years ago but still come here for my annual visit every year. Last year they were able to get me in more last minute but this year they're fully booked for year-end. Be sure to make your appointment at least 6-8 weeks ahead of the holidays. I called twice to try to get an appointment before coming back to the bay. I left a voicemail message but no one called back after a few days so I called again and was able to speak to someone. They were very pleasant on the phone. A week later someone called me back (presumably from the voicemail message I left). I had seen this in another review that they can be hard to reach. Hasn't really been my experience until this year. When I'd email in the past asking for my prescription they always got it to me before I actually needed it (though I do email earlier than I need it). At the end of my office visit I usually request an email copy of my prescription and they've always had it to me within a day or so. I found out in my recent phone call that they will no longer be part of the eyemed network after this year so this may be the end of my time at Visionarium. Might be time for me to finally find a new optometrist on the east coast. read more

I've been going to Visionarium for 2 years now and Dr. Quan and his friendly staff have been helping treat dry eyes using IPL. My sense is that Dr. Quan does this work because he genuinely enjoys it and wants to help people. He is really knowledgeable and takes his time every time I see him and has helped me manage and improve the quality of my eyes. He does things "right" and takes extra steps to make sure I get the best treatment possible. In a world where you are in and out of medical offices, this is a rare thing. I am so grateful to have found him and will continue to see him as long as I live in the Bay and he is still working. Thank you so much. read more

We've been seeing Dr Quan for 30+ years. He's like family to us. Not only he's super great, also very amicable. For our eyes, can't not live without him Hope he'll never retire... read more

Very fortunate to have come here for years. The team and Dr. Quan always makes annual check up a breeze. I'm not sure if they can take new clients, but if they can I would suggest to jump on it. Highly recommended!! read more

I went in today to see if Visionarium could fix the glasses that I sat on three months ago. Since then, no matter how much I tried to bend it back into shape.. it was never the same. I walked in and even though they looked busy, they took the time to greet me and ask me how they could help. I explained how I bent my glasses and asked if they could fix it. 10 minutes later, I had my favorite pair of glasses in the condition that I bought them. Perfect! They didn't charge me for the fix and as always, they were friendly, professional and helpful. I will continue to be a loyal client because every time I go in, I feel like they are there to help me and willing to go the extra mile. read more

I asked them to replace lenses for my frames (see last few sentences on different services). Let me start by saying they seem like very nice people and were very courteous. They originally said the glasses would take about 2 weeks. I hadn't heard back after 2 weeks, so called to get a status. They said there was a supply chain issue. They weren't ready and it would be another 2 weeks. Two weeks later, I called again because I hadn't heard and they said there was an error with the coding (I think that's the term they used) and it would be another few weeks. I called again at week 6 and it still didn't arrive. They said they would check and call me back. No phone call, so I called again. They said, "would you mind if my manager calls you back in 5-10 minutes." I said I didn't mind "if" they "promised" to call me back. They said yes. Of course, no call back. So I called again about an hour later. After calling again, they said next two days and it was delivered which makes me wonder whether that somehow rushed it. Overall, 1 1/2 months and 2-3 times longer than promised seems pretty unreasonable. But, the poor communication made it worse. I suspect (almost willing to bet my life) that if they weren't paid by insurance or the customer until the glasses were in their customers' hands, their communications would be very different and probably the service as well. To give them the benefit of the doubt, I thought this may have been an isolated incident. However, I perused the reviews and it seems like the trend is rave reviews for Dr. Quan and many complaints on front office and timeliness, accuracy, etc. of orders. Definitely a trend in the commentary. And, I debated posting this because they are so nice, but it was very frustrating and it seems like a common review. read more

My eye doctor is here and he is good. I got my prescription quickly and got what I needed. Overall good experience. Check out the specks on the wall. There are some decent glasses at this place. Remember to eat lots of green to help with vision. read more

Visionarium Optometry - Awesome frames...very sturdy! - Optometrists Near Me - San Francisco, California

See all

Dr. Quan is one of the friendliest and caring optometrist I have ever met. I moved to San Francisco from Los Angeles and I was not disappointed. I lost the right side of my hard contacts and I panicked because I am absolutely blind without my contacts. I went there and he prescribed me with some temporary prescribed soft contacts for the time being. He wasnt able to provide me replacements for my hard contacts, but it's completely understandable because my hard contacts were unique and they were only produced from my original optometrist in SoCal. Despite that, I know that Visionarium has the top notch staff because they remember your name and are extremely professional. They fix your glasses immediately when you accidentally break them and run in panicking, they fix your glasses if it's not comfortable NO COMPLAINTS, and they clean your new glasses thoroughly when dispensing. The staff is very patient when training you for your first time wearing contacts and they will spend two hours with you even if they have to. Overall, a great experience here. read more

So I really needed new contacts badly! My work has a great vision plan so I looked up an eye doctor close to home and this was it. Boy was I happy this was the closest! Dr. Quan was not only friendly but very knowledgable and thorough! The front desk girl took care of the first part of my exam and she was extremely nice also. Dr. Quan did not make me feel dumb with all my questions..he took his time to explain everything he was doing, all the equipment and whether or not I was a candidate for lasik surgery (which I am, but I don't know if I'm brave enough for that just yet!) Luckily my insurance covered the cost of my contact lens exam, so I basically didn't pay for anything, though they did tell me that I would have to buy my contacts from them, which is fine by me... I'm supposed to come back in a week to let Dr. Quan know if the new contacts, which is a brand I haven't tried before, works for me! I highly recommend Dr. Quan and the friendly staff at Visionarium Optometry! read more

I am a new patient and saw Dr. Quan, the guy doctor, instead of the woman one. I should have picked the woman one, which would be Dr. Chang. My eye "wellness" exam was literally less than 5 minutes. He then quickly goes to the other patient that was waiting outside. I don't think that's how you should handle a new customer. My co-pay was $10 and the charge to my insurance was $139. So it was $149 for less than 5 minutes of service and he didn't even tell or give me my prescription. The front staff, however, was great that's why it is 3 stars and not 1. read more

Came here for an eye exam in February 2012 and didn't realize how badly they messed up until recently. Everything was fine at first, until a couple months later. They had told me before my exam that they accepted my insurance. Much to my surprise, I got a call from them later saying that they didn't accept it after all, and I was on the hook for the full cost of the exam. I spoke to the person on the phone, telling them that it was their mistake, not mine. Then on a couple more occasions, up to about six months later, I had other people from the office calling me and sending me bill notices in the mail. I thought that was the end of it. Then in August I went to buy more contacts lenses. I always buy online using my prescription -- the website I buy from calls your optometrist to verify. I gave their website the contact lens info from the prescription they had given me in February. The website called me after I placed my order saying the office at Visionarium had told them this prescription was the wrong one -- the exact prescription I had been using since February. So I figured Visionarium had messed up the first time, and bought contacts with the different prescription they had provided this time around. Yesterday I went to an eye exam at a different place, and found out that my contact had been overcorrecting my eyes by a number of 1! The new prescription Visionarium had given me after the payment issue was a -7, and turn out I only need a -6. Contact lens powers increase/decrease in increments of .25, so this is a pretty big deal. Basically my prescription has been entirely too high for almost a year. Since they gave me this different prescription right after the payment problem, I don't know what to think. Seems like it could have been intentional, although I don't want to jump to conclusions. Bottom line: Best case scenario, they were incompetent. Worst case, they were malicious. read more

I've been here for my yearly eye exam twice now. Dr. Quan is a good man. =D For colored contacts (with my insurance) I got 2 boxes. With clear contacts I got 4 boxes. I never knew colored contacts was THAT MUCH of a price difference. I'll stick with clear from now on. Not because colored contacts are more pricey but I'm slowly getting tired of colored contacts. I have some amazing gray contacts that looks so natural and people always ask me if those are my real eyes. LOL! read more

Agreed that Dr. Quan is a super-nice man and he is very good at explaining the exam, one's condition and answering questions. I have HORRIBLE vision (thanks, genes). This being the case, Dr. Quan checked with my insurance to see if they could cover the cost of my contacts as medically necessary due to my big prescription. (My insurance would cover glasses, but normally one would have to pay out-of-pocket for contacts.) The insurance folks agreed to this and I am grateful to Dr. Quan for looking into it. (My previous optometrist did not seem to ever consider this option.) The people up front at Visionarium are friendly, helpful and thorough as well. Highly recommended. Parking is easy, as it's in the old GET mall/Lakeshore Plaza. read more

I went here to get a new glasses prescription (because my normal optometrist was very busy through March), and I was very impressed. My optometrist was Dr. Quang* (spell check?) and he was fantastic. Very personable and knowledgable. The receptionists were friendly and helpful, and it was a very pleasent experience overall. I'd come back. read more

This is a review for Dr. Chang, she is absolutely amazing! She makes sure to remind me about scheduling retinal exams since my prescription is high, and gave me many recommendations for best practices to preserve my vision and suggested some brands of eyedrops I could get for dry eye. She is absolutely not judgemental at all and very easy to talk to and ask questions. She even gave me two separate prescriptions for computer use and normal use too which is awesome. The rest of the staff is great as well and really helps you understand all the costs before you pull any triggers. They are great about helping you with any insurance also and give good suggestions of what types of frames are best for your particular prescription. read more

The location was key for me being a fulltime mother my schedule is tight which had kept me coming back for 4 years as well as the exams. However, the dis-organization and lack of communication in the office cannot be overlooked any further. While everyone is nice there is always something and this time it was the last straw. This round I purchased lenses and contacts, here is my recent experience.... They called me when they arrived after 2 weeks of the visit to inform me the lenses had a scratch, since I was desperate I used them until my new lenses arrived. After a couple days I was getting headaches and they said it would take me a week to adjust. Okay, I waited a week and since the headaches persisted I called them and before I could tell them they informed me the lenses were waiting for me (how convenient!). I went on to explain about the headaches and order replacement lenses without the tint. Also I checked on my contact lenses (since the ones given at the visit were a day from expiring) and was told they were on back order and they weren't sure when they would arrive (thanks for informing me and offering samples especially considering the headache glasses). I then had to deal with the headache induced glasses until the contacts arrived, which they did call to inform me when they arrived and the lady at the front desk was nice enough to run them out since the parking situation was a nightmare. Two weeks after that, no word until I called to check on the lenses and they would call me when they arrived. When I was finally able to make it in the lenses wouldn't fit in the frames and they said they would need to send the frames and new lenses back to get installed. I really do not have time for that being 9 months pregnant and they were able to get someone there to fit them in. After all of that, the price they gave me was ~$360 which 1) I didn't expect since I usually pay things out ahead of time and 2) I brought in my own frames this round. I really recall paying for the glasses lenses and exam co-pay but after checking my accounts I see I wasn't charged however when I did discuss this they saw they were overcharging the contact lens prescription ($63 not $75). All of the disorganization and miscommunication has me feeling ripped off and completely exhausted of all the extra effort a customer has to take. read more

What's not to like? Easy to book an appointment. Two convenient locations. Friendly, helpful staff. The most up-to-date computerized equipment. I had a comprehensive eye examination, fitting for contact lenses, glasses, and loupes. All in record time. My appointment was done promptly, with no wait, and I was finished quickly and on my way. All for a great price, thanks to the Yelp coupon and all with a smile! read more

By far the best experience I've ever had seeing an Optometrist! I chose to give this place a shot after starting my new job and since my GF had come here once before. Checked out the reviews and off I went! Visionarium is located inside Lakeshore Plaza, so no need to worry about parking. I went on a Saturday and trust me, appts fill up fast! Dr. Quan did multiple tests and was very detail oriented. You know that test where you rest your chin on the machine and focus on an object (typically a circle or a dot?). Well I got to focus on a little barn house! Def put a smile on my face. Very nice guy that even chatted with me for a bit. Much more interesting than some other docs I've had that normally can't wait to be done so you can pull out your wallet. read more

I have had to wear contacts/lenses forever, and this is by far the best customer service I have received. The doctor is very attentive, thorough, and friendly. She even was understanding with me when I showed up with my toddler (I had a contact crisis and my husband was out of town.. which means the 1 yr old went with me.) While checking my eyes she also kept passing my toddler the toys she was dropping out of her stroller. I was so grateful that she was nice about it, since it wasn't an ideal situation. They rock. read more

I'm having problems with the after check up service. After my eye exam, I paid for an ample supply of contact lenses, and they didn't place the order so I had to wait longer than usual. Sure, they were willing to give me a couple of pairs to tide me over, but this is not the first time this has happened. Having prescription glasses made is taking way too long because of one thing or another. They claim it was the lab's fault. But of course, everything is fully paid for and they already have my money. Pity, because many years ago, the service was spot on. Not anymore. I will be ordering my glasses and lenses from other places in the future. I can recommend having eye exams here but I do not recommend their other services. read more

I love coming here, because of the staff is super friendly and understanding. I drive 45 miles to come here even though I don't live in the city anymore. The only thing is, I feel like the guy who works at the front desk (I think his name is John, He is latin) needs to smile more. Every time I go in there and talk to him, he looks at me funny. I don't like getting stared at weird. So that's why I haven't given this place 5 stars. read more

YES! VISIONARIUM!!! I've been going here since the 4th grade i believe...I got my first pair of glasses here as well as contacts. Everybody is extremely helpful and always have an answer to any questions you might have. I've been seen by both Dr. Quan and Dr. Chang, both are SUPER nice and i know Dr. Chang remebers me so we always have our little heart to hearts. well, not really...but you get it. I recently went back to get my eyes checked only to find out my insurance doesn't cover vision just yet. Derek (also knows me personally :D) didn't think that was possible, knowing i work at Lucky's right next door. So, he did't charge me and had me come back after i checked with the union and what not. Long story short, it wasn't going to be covered. Derek felt bad so he gave me 25% off my exam and 3 pairs of contacts FOR FREE! I LOVE HIM!!! and i love visionarium. 'nuff said. read more

I came here for my 1st comprehensive eye exam in 7 years. I have vision insurance again! woo! This optometrist was listed as a provider. I am so glad I met Dr. Quan. He really is an congenial and full of patience. I chose Visionarium Optometry not only for the excellent location and free parking but also for the updated and high-tech optometry equipment used in exams. I did not have to endure those drops that dilate your eyes and the puff of air on my pupils used in traditional glaucoma/ cataract tests. Examinations are all done with scans and lasers now. Woo! Dr. Quan indulged all of my inner geek questions about the high-tech medical equipment. As it turns out I do need a new prescription. The selection and variety of frames is plentiful. I had no problem finding a nice modern and fashionable frame for my new glasses. read more

Dr Quan and his staff is great. They don't have a large selection of glasses to choose from but the small amount is pretty nice. Dr. Quan is very good at explaining everything and getting everything done quick especially during a busy full schedule. I'm sure if you need more time with him to explain things, He would. Overall great experience. Oh FYI contacts are expensive so maybe good to get the prescription and go to Costco to buy it. It's almost half the price at Costco unless your insurance cover it than of course take advantage of it since you paid your insurance for it. read more

Don't get me wrong, Dr. Quan and the staff are great and one of the nicest and warmest folks you'll ever meet, but it misses one star because I've ordered contacts twice and twice, they've been later than was quoted...and I had to call in myself to follow-up. I needed to take my daughter to have her eyes examined, and since this is very closed to my house I thought I would try them. She saw Dr.Christina Chang. She was very nice and took the time to explain every single thing she was doing for my daughter. She addressed every concern I had. I have worked in the optical business (but I did not mention it to her). My expectations going in were very high and I'm happy to say Dr.Chang was great. I love she is so easy to talk to and pays attention to every concern you might have, takes the time to explain everything. I'm so glad we found a great doctor on our first try. Very happy with the examination and the prescription. Very professional and attentive. 5 stars easy Disappointed with the service staff. They told me they would rush the lenses order(their idea) because I needed it for night driving. I go in to pick them up 4 days later and the guy would not make eye contact or acknowledge I was present. A woman walks up and I ask if my glasses were ready, she looks around for 10 min and says no they take a week. I tell her what the guy told me and she says I misunderstood. And she says we will call you when they come in. I called after the week had passed and am told they will call the lab and are sent and will be in later that morning. The next day I stop by to pick them up and am told they have not arrived yet because the delivery guy has not arrived yet. Two days after that I go to pick them up and the original guy remembers me and is very friendly. He tells me he has them because he went to pick them up at the lab yesterday and they up-graded the lens. I ask him why and he had no answer. The prescription was nothing special. The lenses were expensive, about $50 more than other places. They never did call. I don't like being lied too. Service gets zero stars so it averages out to 2 1/2. read more

Dr. Chang is a nice, polite one. But she seems to be rushing and doesn't give me time for questions. This is my second time. I am considering switching. There was no other patient (client) after me. Yet, she did not say if I have any questions..... Just rushed me out to the front desk. At the front desk, there are two girls, one Asian and one non-Asian. The non-Asian one is nice and took pictures of my eyes, and made copies of my prescription. When I asked question regarding my power prescription to the Asian one, she seemed annoyed. She brushed me off. She was making up some answers which were not right. I am from medical field and regardless, as a customer I have the right to ask questions. If she does not know the answer she can simply say, she's not sure and let me find out. .. I find her rude and has no customer or social skills. I deliberately made her go ask Dr. Chang. I really do not like that girl's attitude. I do not think I will be returning to that place. read more
