I parked in the garage across the street and found the place easily. They have a lot of frames you can browse while you wait and they had a special trunk club event going. The frames tend to be on the pricier side, but I found two pairs that uniquely match my style. The eye exam required no dilation because they have a machine that scans your eyes. Everyone at Looksie is so attentive, helpful and nice! This is the second time I go for my annual eye exam and in both opportunities my experience has been amazing. Dr. Tran and Dr. Slamovich were caring, listened to me and my concerns and answered all my questions. I had what was probably the least thorough eye exam of my life at Looksie. I came in wanting a contacts exam, my first one ever after wearing glasses for many years. After doing the exam I was notified that I had to make another appointment for another day to actually get fitted for the contacts and take some home. I came back in at the Spear St. location where I was given a couple of different contacts to try out and a couple of different options to compensate for the fact that I wear progressive lenses. The prescription for the contacts I was given to test out seemed off right from the start, but I was told my eyes would get used to them. They didn't, and everything was blurry for days. I sent emails and got confusing responses that didn't really answer my questions or address my concerns. I went back in for the doctor to check me again, and this time I was given a few different brands to try with a prescription that seemed to address the concerns. Problem was that I got home and the different brands were all different prescriptions. The doctor told me I'd hear from them in a couple of weeks for a follow up. Needless to say, that never happened. I finally decided to pay out of pocket to see another doctor who knew what they were doing (I had used my annual exam benefit at Looksie). I went to this other doctor and walked out the door from my contacts exam with a prescription that was so much better and that helped me to actually see. My advice is to stay away from here unless you're just looking to buy glasses or contacts with an existing prescription from elsewhere. read more

Amazing amazing and amazing. As someone who's had high subscription glasses for most of his life, I'm extremely conscious about the thickness of my lens and how it looks from a side profile. For that reason, I asked Dr. Tran to help me find a lab that would be willing to help me edge down my lenses so it would look lighter and thinner. I've made the same requests at other optometry before, but none of them were able to fulfill this request or the final product was barely edged down. However, when I picked up my new glasses from Looksie Optometry I was SO SO SO pleasantly surprised, the work was immaculate, the lens is well encompassed by all its surrounding frame and didn't look bulky at all!!! Dr. Tran is very responsive, knowledgeable and patient. The eye exam was thorough and efficient, she also helped me pick out my new JMM eye frame. I've never heard of this brand before, but I'm Genuinely surprised by the quality and aesthetics of the frame, which just checks all the marks for me. One more thank you to the two ladies at front desk, sorry I don't know your names, but both of you are amazing and made me feel very welcomed. She makes me feel less nervous about my visits somehow and is extremely knowledgable and helpful when it comes to caring for my eyes when I've not been treating them as well as they deserve. But I was really disappointed when I had a recurring eye issue that was getting worse, I could barely get a response from their team. In spite of many unanswered calls and an email chain back and forth over several days, I ended up having to schedule a telehealth appointment elsewhere and go to urgent care to get seen because they were so unhelpful. They asked me to schedule a follow-up, which I did, but they never confirmed the appointment even though I made it days earlier. They never answer their phones and are very hard to reach. I have been coming to Looksie Optometry for a few months now. I've done a check-up, came back for retinal images, and have gotten a lenses swap as well as bought a new pair of glasses. Each and every time, Dr. Tran and her staff have been so accommodating and the selection they have in the store is amazing. They were very easy to make an appointment and verify my insurance but once there it was more mixed. They were not clear about what was covered by my insurance and while I wear contacts, I did not realize that my insurance only covered 10% of the contacts exam, another $100+. In general, I really don't get it how once you pay for an eye exam, that a contact lens exam is a totally different service with additional charges even though she has already checked my eyes and prescription. I have been wearing contact for over 30 years so it is not like it is my first contacts appointment. I mentioned dry eyes and was interested in prescription eye drops I heard about on TV. I did not realize that this would not be covered under my vision exam but becomes another separate exam charge against my medical insurance with a specialist copay of $40, not my vision coverage. After my exam, I was looking at frames and they did explain that my insurance covers up to $130 but immediately brought out frames for me to select in the $275+ range. In fact that is the cheapest they sell so I prefer to use and on-line provider that won't cost me more $$. I know that they are a small local retail shop and I passionately want to support local businesses but it is also a tough balance trying to be economical and not spend on something that we don't really need. We all know the feeling. I think that they could be more open and transparent about what is covered and what is not and how much extra services and fees are. I just felt like I was being nickle-and-dimed and not that she cared about how much I would have to pay. Also Dr Tran moves and speaks quickly not really sharing what she was doing, so I didn't feel like she was really focused on me and my needs. Oh, so she did the 'medical exam' for dry eyes and was supposed to call in the prescription on Tuesday, but as of Friday, the pharmacy still has not received their call for the eye drops. I sent 2 email reminders and asked for a call back once they called it in, but apparently that is too much work. What I thought would be a pretty quick in and out appointment that would be covered under my insurance, could have turned out to be several hundred dollars, though I did not do the contact exam or buy their frames. I know that a lot of this is not her 'fault' but more about personal style, sensitivity to my out of pocket expenses and my needs. I'll be looking for a different provider next time. read more

We were concerned that we would have a hard time finding an optometrist who could provide service during this COVID-19 lockdown, but Looksie Optometry made it easy. Their website was easy to use to book an appointment and we were sent follow-up emails immediately to keep us informed of this status. They quickly set up a phone appointment to get our medical history and find out what services we needed. I told them that both my wife and I needed eye exams and new glasses. Two days later, we went for our visit at their Polk Street location. It was by appointment only, so we didn't have to worry a crowded space. They were incredibly friendly and helpful. Temperatures were taken, hands were sanitized, and every step of the process felt well-planned and safe. I'm used to getting my eyes examined at work (Apple), which has the latest equipment for vision testing, and was concerned that we wouldn't get that same quality. Looksie didn't disappoint there either. Dr. Tran and her staff used the same quality devices and made us feel confident that our exams were thorough and accurate. We were able to browse for frames and the staff made sure that every one we came in contact with was sanitized before it went back on display. At the end, we had picked out our frames, had new prescriptions, and will be going back in two weeks to pick up our new glasses. Exam: 4 Customer Service: 3 Overall: 3.5 You would think an optometrist located in the Tenderloin would be more sensitive to their client's financial situation. This is not the case at Looksie. When I was researching optometrists, I wanted to support a small, local business, which is why I chose Looksie in the first place. I needed to renew my contact lens prescription, but was in the middle of renegotiating employer benefits to include full vision coverage. Before the exam, I discussed my financial circumstances with the assistant. I became apprehensive about doing the exam because it was much more than I expected with the contact lens fitting. (Some of the exam was covered through my medical insurance.) I took her advice to follow through because she made the point that it was certain that I needed to renew my prescription, but not certain that I would get the benefits to cover the contact lens fitting. When I lived in Berkeley, I used the UC Berkeley Eye Clinic for 6 years. They give the most thorough and comprehensive eye exams I've every experienced. Plus, because they serve many students, they are very sensitive to financial situations and worked with my insurance to get the best deals. Sometime that mean paying full price for eye exams, but recommending affordable contact lenses with massive rebates. Although I thought the exam at Looksie was good (but not as good as the UC Berkeley Eye Clinic), I did not receive the small business customer service I was expecting. It felt more like a high-end retailer selling expensive brands to the wealthy San Francisco Elite. The doctor kept pushing special 1-Day contact lenses. After getting home and researching, I realized they are 3 times the cost of my original prescription for a one-year supply. Pretty insensitive if you ask me. San Francisco is already expensive as it is, but to add an unnecessary expense for a few hours of added comfort is too much. I've been trying to switch to a less expensive brand, but it's been such a headache emailing the doctor to change the prescription. And yes, I eventually got my Vision benefits and would have paid 1/10 of the exam cost if I waited 2 months. read more

Super disappointed with Looksie and their customer service. After almost a year ordeal to try and receive the frames I paid for, they have taken no action or ownership of a mistake on their end. I have to post this to warn other consumers to be weary of buying any frames from the operation. Overall appointment and in-store experience were nice, it was the actual purchase experience that was not acceptable. I was convinced by their sales person that it wouldn't be a problem to ship me glasses since I live in LA and was only visiting in December 2019. It's now November 2020, I never received the glasses and have had nothing but problems trying to rectify the situation. What Happened: In January they didn't remember that I needed the glasses shipped, I had to call in to see what happened, I decided on the phone to also buy sunglasses from Looksie but wanted to check to see my insurance coverage so asked them to hold off shipping. Since no one followed up, I contacted them again in March deciding against the sunglasses and asking them to ship just the glasses, to my surprise they told me they were already shipped on the day I called them in January. They sent me the tracking number that day... 2 months late, and no-glasses had ever arrived, at this time both Looksie and my office shut down due to covid, and it wasn't until September that I could actually investigate if anything ever arrived. Despite never communicating the tracking number to me or when it would be shipped and also spelling the name of the Recipient wrong on the supposed package they sent, they denied any responsibility to me and I never received the glasses. The only option I received was that they would cover the cost of the lenses, I just had to shell out almost $450+ for the frame, mind you this order only cost me $289 in the first place. I realize we are in COVID and in tough situations for all business, but to not take any responsibility for your error is unacceptable. I offered to buy again through my insurance if they would cover the out of pocket costs ($289) but they said they only would give me the one option of buying the frame ($450 and covering the cost of the lenses, which is more than I would ever spend on glasses.) Looksie has incredibly personable staff, who practiced careful COVID-19 safety precautions and were very attentive throughout my eye exam process and prescription glasses purchase. The office is intimate in size, but I felt safe and comfortable throughout my appointment. I found Looksie Optometry through my Healthcare provider in-network search tool. In my experience with Dr. Tran, I felt she was thorough, friendly, approachable, and easy to consult with during my appointment. Although I'm not a complicated case, her way of listening gave me the impression that it didn't feel like a routine exam for her. I ended up purchasing frames + lens through their office instead of taking my prescription to Warby Parker or Zenni, because the inventory at Looksie was premium in design and lens technology offerings. With my insurance, I paid ~$250 out of pocket, but I feel that decision was 100% worth the investment-- even after previously purchasing glasses with the aforementioned competing retailers. I really don't know what their problem is, but Looksie has refused to provide me a copy of my prescription. I requested it awhile back, before I went travelling -- I wanted to make sure I had it in case I lost my glasses. They first responded by saying that of course they'd send me the prescription. But they never did, and in the intervening period of time they have not picked up the phone or responded to email. It's incredible -- and wrong. Completely racist experience. Went here with my partner today, both of us seeking new frames. He is white, myself black which seemed to be hard for the staff to comprehend. After standing around me for a moment the first woman asked, "Are you together?" seemingly in disbelief. It wasn't until she realized I was in the company of a white man that she relented. We brushed it off and continued browsing. Just a few moments later the optometrist came and gave us the same treatment. I got my Persol eyeglasses at Looksie, and Star helped me choose the ones that complimented my face and were appropriate for my profession. It took a while, trying on many frames. I know that handmade Italian eyewear is pricy, so I was prepared for that. I got my glasses last year, and in the meantime, I moved out of state. Last month I noticed an issue with my frames, and contacted Star. My frame was replaced free of charge and I just received my glasses back in the mail. Dr. Amy Tran is an incredible optometrist, and believe me, I've been to many over the years (due to a complicated eye situation) - she is by far the best. I used to think that most optometrists give more or less the same prescriptions, but there are a lot of factors and nuances that I didn't realize existed before going to Looksie. There are a lot of common problems (dry eyes, astigmatism), and having an optometrist who takes precise measurements, and is ALSO knowledgeable about the differences in brands of contacts and how they sit on the eye, makes all the difference. We rely on glasses and contacts every day, so these details matter so much! The prescription and contacts that Dr. Tran selected for me are so much more comfortable than any other prescription I've had in my life. My eyes don't dry out anymore, my contacts don't slide around on top of my pupil, the fit is so perfect that I never get dust or eyelashes trapped between the lens and the sensitive cornea. She's professional and friendly, and everything is always on time since it's her own practice and there's no chaos - all her attention is on you. (She's got great taste too, so if you want some stylish designer frames she makes fantastic recommendations!) read more

I went thru 3 optometrists recently in San Francisco because my first one on Post Street retired a couple years ago and sold his practice to a third party which was horrible. I was on the hunt for a new optometrist again this year once my VSP yearly benefits re-started and I wanted a privately-owned practice again instead of a third-party company that employees part time doctors. I found Looksie surprisingly by just walking by. I live in the area and always thought the store front looked so cute and chic inside. I made an appointment online very easily thru their system and they followed up with an e-mail. Throughout the process they were punctual, efficient, and always friendly. After getting a refreshed prescription and ordering contacts (yes, contacts here are not the cheapest on the market, but they do offer a couple of rebate offers that will net out to make them priced competitively), I also brought in a pair of sunnies that were broken and Dr. Tran did not hesitate to fix them. After 3 visits here I would have to say that every staff member I interacted with was pleasant and I am so glad I've finally found a new permanent optometrist office! read more

It was my first visit to an optometrist in SF and especially during those Covid-19 times, I only went because I needed a prescription for my contact lenses. Dr. Tran and her staff were tremendously friendly and responsive. All details and questions have been answered by phone and e-mail beforehand. Also communication about co-payment and exam prices. I've been here for my eye exam the last two times. I collect frames and they have some cute ones here, and high quality lenses if you want to update old frames. I know you can get cheaper lenses, but making sure I have good lenses is important to me. I've gotten cheap-o ones before and ended up with prescription decline and a lot of scratches. I came in today for an eye exam and was having really bad morning sickness and trying so hard not to vomit. Amy showed me some breathing techniques so I could relax before the eye tests. So embarrassing to need, but I'm grateful for their kindness, and now I have a new relaxation tool too. The exam showed my eyes are in good health and I got see a huge photo of my eye. No drops, very sensitive to pregnancy and my symptoms. Thank you! They also have some sort of database to search if you have insurance. I apparently have eye insurance that I didn't know about! So no worries if you can't find your insurance card and maybe you'll get a surprise lower copay instead of paying full price for the exam. The door is locked because there's rough people sometimes in Polk Gulch. So if you go, and they don't seem open, just knock. I wish they were in a safer patch of the neighborhood and, maybe in time they will be able to move up a few blocks. But then, if all the good stores move once they get going, that little patch won't be able to get safer. Vegan Picnic from Union Street is across the way now too, so it seems to be on an upward trend over there. It is very clean, and comfortable in the store and exam room. read more
