As much as I still love coming here for the attentive care Dr. Tam provides, I want to call to attention my recent experience ordering a pair of glasses through the office. 3/27/26: Chose frames and the opticians quoted a two week timeframe for glasses. Paid nearly $300 for the frames. They mentioned the lab would order a new frame in the same style since the floor model was defective. Okay, great! 4/17/26: It's been three weeks; I call since I haven't heard back. To my dismay, it seems like they were not monitoring my order since they just found out my frames were still on back order. The lab is out for the weekend already, so they'll give me a call on Monday. 4/21/26: Do not receive a call back on Monday. Call the office on Tuesday for an update. Front desk worker says all the opticians are busy and they give me a call back by end of day. According to the front desk staff, the frames are still on back order. Did not hear back that day. 4/22/26: I received a text from the optician saying the frames I chose are not manufactured anymore and I'd need to come in to choose a new frame. This is where I got very disappointed and frustrated. Not only did I have to be the proactive one throughout this entire journey, but I'm out $300 with no glasses. Shouldn't this be something they found out 1-2 weeks after I put in my order?! Not nearly a month later. 5/8/26: I'll spare you all the remaining details, but I finally picked up my new glasses nearly a month and a half later. I ended up providing my own frames I bought separately instead of ordering through the office. I received my $300 refund two days prior on the 6th. What's my point through all of this? My intentions are not to get the opticians in trouble -- they seem very over worked. I think my point is to call to attention to management that better processes need to be put in place for their customers, especially a faster process to get their customer's money back. I understand there are roadblocks with insurance for refunds, but there has to be a better way. In my 20+ years of wearing glasses, it's never been this difficult and frustrating. I simply hope other customers don't have the long journey of receiving their glasses like I did. read more

Through the Hayes Optometry is hands down the best optical shop in San Francisco. I have been a customer for many years and the service is always top notch. Brandon at the front desk is always friendly and helpful. Dr. Tam is the best. She is efficient and has always shown that she really cares. The real star at this store is the optician Jessica Cardona. She is extremely knowledgeable and has a very discerning eye for what looks good on me. She picked out my glasses (I never would have chosen them) and I have never been so pleased. I get compliments on them all the time, at least twice a day. Linsey, the other optician has excellent taste and she helped me pick out other glasses that I am very happy with. The selection of styles is amazing and the prices are pretty good (Especially with insurance) So happy to have found this outstanding place. read more

I went to TTH for the better part of a decade. When they were sold/purchased by an outside conglomerate, their lens maker changed. Every order I made since that change (and my optometrist leaving a couple years ago) has had a problem with one pair of glasses. I typically get a new pair of sunglasses, a new frame, and a lens update every year. The last three years I went to TTH, my glasses had issues with: - A pair of sunglasses had the polarization 90 degrees wrong in one eye, so one eye was always occluded. - The next set of sunglasses were very specific wrap around glasses that TTH stopped carrying. They fit perfectly when ordered, but when they came back from the lens maker, the frame had totally warped, making them unusable. I looked around for 6 months for a frame with a similar narrow nose bridge and enough side eye coverage to ride on a bike. I spent 5-8 hours of my own time over those months (during COVID times), intermittently trying to shop online for a high-coverage, narrow nose bridge frame. The correct brands were difficult to find because the rep occasionally would ghost me for a few weeks, and when I finally had time to work on this Project (because it was apparently my project to do), the associate was no longer working there. I was given a discount on a pair that was much, much more expensive when I was lead to believe that I would just pay the price of the original pair (still more than $700). The store manager offered me a discount, but a 10% discount on 30% more is still pretty lame when you've already asked them to order it specifically based on the old price. - The next year, I requested an older pair be updated with my new Rx, and then a new, larger/taller pair be ordered with a "computer bump" in the lower portion of the lens. The smaller lens arrived with the bump, making them useless. I didn't complain because it was the third time in a row that my glasses came back messed up and at that point I felt like it was my fault for thinking everything would be OK. I went elsewhere the next year, but was pretty disappointed with the glasses selection and fitting. It's been more than a year or two since I've used this company and it's taken me this long to write about it, because I loved this company, and the corporate management that took it over absolutely drove it into the ground. I saw the same three people manage my eyes for almost a decade, and since the switchover, I never saw the same people in the office. I can't say if that's changed in the last couple years. I just know that even though I sent three of my friends there from 2010-2015, I'm never sending anyone there again. read more

Came here for my annual eye exam and was in and out in less than 30 min with no issues whatsoever! The clinic/shop is cute, and the front desk staff were friendly and helpful. I didn't buy glasses, but the brands they had were so unique and trendy, but definitely on the pricey side (most were $500+). The exam itself felt comprehensive (they definitely have all the newest equipment) and they are very efficient at getting patients in and out. Highly recommend and will be back next year! read more

This is a review for LINDSAY. Would give them zero starts if possible. So I called to order a frame. And I called several times to ENSURE the frame was available (since it is an older model) and was told by other offices they couldn't not order it so imagine my delight when I found an office near me that could. Anyways so I called earlier in the day to inquire about the frame. I was told by LINDSAY that she could order it. I asked to if she was sure since I was told by other offices that it was out of stock. She reassured me that she sees it available. Since it took awhile to get ahold of her on the phone (and my break is only 10 mins) I told her I would call back later that day to complete the order. Sooooooo I just called and she immediately states in a short tone " I cannot get it". "What do you mean?" "I cannot get it." "Explain further please." "We cannot order it." "What do you mean, you told me earlier today you could." "After you and I spoke, I went out of my way to check if we can get it, but it is out of stock." "Why did you tell me it was available when I asked earlier? I've been looking for the frame for months and I asked you repeatedly if it was available?" I'm sorry but you should do YOUR JOB next time and check BEFORE you quote someone since CLEARLY you CANNOT do your job correctly! read more

Super easy to schedule and didn't have to wait at all when I got there. Dr Hancock and the other lady who did the exam were very professional, friendly, and respectful. I really liked talking with them and they made it a comfortable environment. Only thing that knocks this review down from a 5 star is the receptionists, they both are very cold and don't seem to care about you. The male receptionist there has no care in the world for you it seems, just sits there until you speak up first, and seems annoyed you're talking to him regarding an appointment or anything else. I have been getting my eye exam and glasses at this place for almost 20 years. My last visit with Dr. Jamie Hancock was excellent. She was thorough, pleasant, and professional. The service has gone downhill tremendously in terms of friendliness and attention. On June 27th, I went there to have my glasses adjusted. The receptionist and the man who adjusted my glasses need to be more personable and warmer. The guy who helped and did not bother to clean my lenses which is common sense. I like the doctors there and the frames they sell. The service there is becoming a turn-off. read more

Once I discovered Face a Face frames, I never looked back. The French design team for Face a Face claims their design inspiration comes from Modern Art, architecture and contemporary design, and all I know is, I like 'em. These frames have personality --a point of view, as does their sister brand, Woow. Good frames, a small collection, a clean shop, honors VSP, and offers effective service. I've purchased two frames and will likely go back for more. I also had to cash in on a lens replacement, when I found my fairly complicated lenses got scratched more easily (not sure why, but blaming toxic mercury in the fog, jk) than past pairs. With a one year return replace policy on lenses, that was relatively easy to do. My only negative is that I notice they charge $25-$50 to order a pair of frames that they don't have in stock. Given how low inventory is, I'm not sure how I feel about that upcharge. I'm sure they have a business justification for this (passing shipping charges on, maybe) but it seems a little unfair to pass that cost on, given its their choice to keep their inventory low. But perhaps I'm grousing after seeing that one of my favorite pairs of frames (and one of their most popular) is not currently at their shop. Service is good, billing worked easily, lots of good communication when glasses arrived in. Parking can be a challenge, so I recommend if you can't find parking check out the nearby Performing Arts Garage Parking, which makes shopping in Hayes Valley on weekdays relatively simple. If you like a good well-curated selection of frames and a VSP provider: this is a good option. read more

Went for a contact lens fitting and had a very pleasant experience! I got an appointment over the phone (takes a few days to get one). Once I got there, there wasn't much of a wait time. After a regular eye exam, I immediately met with an optometrist who was super sweet and patiently taught me how to use contacts followed by more practice with another person till I got it right. Pretty impressed by the whole experience, would definitely recommend the place! read more

I haven't seen the optometrist here but I've bought 2 pairs of glasses from here and both times my experiences have been excellent. I found out about Through the Hayes by just walking by and dropping in. They have an excellent selection of fun glasses in a variety of shapes and styles. I have a wide face and so finding flattering glasses that fit can be difficult. The staff here are so kind and helpful. I recently ordered a pair of glasses over the phone without even needing to drop by. It took 20 minutes max for them to look up my insurance and make the order. And they take FSA cards. Dr. Tam was extremely nice, knowledgable and explained the tests and findings perfectly. Her colleague/assistant, Amy, was also wonderful and performed the initial diagnostics prior to being further assessed by Dr. Tam. Great location, beautiful store and good variety of glasses to choose from. Parking can be a little tricky, so plan on arriving early. Once again, Through the Hayes saves the day. After wearing contacts for years, my eyes just couldn't take them anymore. I suffered through wearing glasses (only) for a few weeks thinking I'd give my eyes a rest and then got sensible and booked an appointment with Dr. Tam at Through the Hayes. It turns out that I'd scratched and bothered the inside of my lids from wearing other contacts overnight and for too long. I was guilty as charged. Had I continued on this path, I might never have been able to wear contacts ever again. (eek!) Dr. Tam recommended once daily ones. They're a bit more expensive but I can once more wear contacts without my eyes tearing and having to take the lenses out. And what I'm saving not having to buy drops and rinses, it's about even. But last time the leg of my glasses became loose, I went in and they tighten the tiny screw in 2 seconds and said "that'll be five dollars". I'm not short of $5, but this is the first time I've heard of anyone charging for things like this, especially to their existing customers. Man i went to a ton of places looking for the right frames first (OK so I am vain about my glasses) and finally found some sweet ones here. Now the selection of frames is really just one factor and ultimately for me it's all about the service and I must have lucked out getting Lesley. She's awesome and super helpful. The actual optometrist is also solid but the service I got from Lesley is what sold me. Some other places seem to not be interested in you if you don't appear to be a serious buyer (I probably look a lil' bit slacker) but hey I do wear glasses... I've been coming to Through the Hayes since 2014 and could not be happier with the services I've received here. I had my first eye exam here in 2014 and picked up a new pair of glasses/lenses through my insurance. They're my first (but not last!) Woow pair - reasonably priced and great quality. All of the frames they supply are unique, so if you're looking for something a little less mass-produced and have VSP insurance you will be in good hands. They have more tame glasses (like my first pair, pictured) and some pretty wild ones. The Woow glasses and the anti-reflective lens coating I added for a fee have held up famously, two years later. Whenever the ear pieces get loose I stop by on the weekend and someone is more than happy to tighten them up. My most recent visit (exam + frames/new lenses order) was equally easy. Dr. Sutijono took the time to do my eye exam right even though they were very busy that day. She made sure that my tests were done correctly (and re-done if needed) and made sure the results were explained in a way I would understand. She answered my questions and made me feel comfortable. I was also assisted by Rebecca on some of my tests, who was patient and ensured everything was done with the utmost care. Alexa helped me pick out my new frames and was so much fun to work with! She (and my friend who stopped by) gently guided me to picking out my new frames, which I can't wait to receive in the coming weeks. Dr. Therese Langille is a godsend. Had been suffering from dry eyes and thus resorted to using rewetting drops throughout the day while wearing contact lenses. Many thanks to Dr. Langille for letting me try three different brands (over three months) until I tried a brand (Alcon's Dailies Total 1 Water Gradient contact lenses) that worked for my dry eyes. For the first time in a while, wearing contacts is so comfortable that I forget that I'm wearing them. Much obliged to Dr. Langille for her willingness to order sample after sample of different contacts until we found one that worked for my eyes. She never gave up on me (over three months of different samples) and never made me feel like an imposition. Thank you Dr. Langille for your patience, persistence, and bedside manner. read more

Through the Hayes have been my optometrists for over five years now. Dr. Sutijono is very knowledgeable, thorough, patient and compassionate. She is tough to get hold of but totally worth waiting for. Greg is very thorough, patient and takes the time to answer all questions and has always gone out of the way to ensure a pleasant experience. Experience with other staff can be a bit hit or miss, leaning towards positive most of the times. They take insurance and offer some great spectacles to choose from, and glass lenses are on warranty for at least a year. Note that this is an expensive place to get your glasses made, but if you have good insurance coverage it should feel fine. I highly recommend Through the Hayes! read more

So I had an appointment on a Wednesday night. I had a lovely experience with my eye Dr. Therese. She was patient and kind. I have a pretty high prescription and my left eye gives me trouble, on the verge of an astigmatism but low so it's hard to find what will work. We decided to remove the astigmatism for my contacts and see if it helps. She didn't have trial lenses in my prescription so had to order some, but gave me 5 daily lenses to try while we waited for my real lenses to arrive. She clearly told me she wanted me to try this prescription for at least 2 weeks to see how I settle in and like them.. So based on the timing she gave me 5 daily lenses, it took a week for the real ( non daily) trial lenses to come in so I ended up having to rewear some dailys. Not ideal but it is what it is. So I called them to check on my regular trials and they said they were in. I went to pick them up and when I got there they had ordered 1 single pair of trials. Again not a huge deal but what if I dropped one or ripped one? Any time I have gotten trials I have always been given at least 2 pairs. I asked if they only had these and I was just nervous because I have to go out of town tomorrow. Another eye Dr came out and was immediately aggressive. She told me that they can't just be giving free contacts out and I need to decide what I want to do if I like these and can't just keep coming for free contacts. I was so taken a back and still am. I am not looking for free contacts. The Dr I met with wanted me to try these out for at least 2 weeks because of the change she made. I tried to explain that to this Dr and she continued to cut me off, told me then I should just wear glasses if I rip these. She was actually acting like I'm just phishing for free contacts, raising her voice and making a scene. She was so rude and this whole thing was unnecessary!! I was very calm and apologetic in the beginning regarding pretty basic and reasonable requests. I honestly don't know if I'll be back. How dare you treat a customer like that? My exam with my insurance cost me $99 dollars because my prescription changed. I am a paying customer and you should treat me with respect. Totally disappointed and really upset by that interaction. She needs some training in customer service. I'm not sure her name but she is is smaller in size and dark brown/black hair. They don't have their Dr's posted on their website so I do not know her name. I have been coming here for 3 years and seriously appaled by my experience. read more

The people who work here are SO NICE and helpful. In a city where all the places are frequently staffed with standoffish hipsters or snooty sales assistants, it actually felt luxurious doing business with these people. I got lasik 15 years ago and then 5 years ago, in grad school, I noticed I had trouble seeing the board and got glasses mostly to help boost my long distance and night vision; I seriously have only been to an optometrist 2x in the past 15 years (this time being the 2nd). So to be fair, I don't have an extensive reference point of comparison in recent memory, but I really loved the whole experience at Through the Hayes. Anyways, it all started when I was just casually trying on glasses in the store because I wanted new frames that a) had nose pads and b) were lighter than my old ones. I found a cute pair I liked, and the employee who helped me also worked with me to get an appointment and even saved the glasses I liked to my profile so that when I came in for my appointment, I could try them on again and choose my fave. I got pricing estimates, including with insurance coverage for everything and threw in a couple unadvertised discounts. When I made the appointment I got a an email confirmation and a reminder email (why don't all places do this?). My optometrist was the sweetest and everyone working in the store was helpful and friendly and helped me make the final decision on which pair to get. I got a courtesy call when my glasses were ready for pickup, and the person was all "see you soon, my dear!" Seriously, really nice, helpful folks over at Through the Hayes and an extensive selection of frames. Highly recommend! read more
