I'm in Francisco on vacation and my contact lens ripped with no spare, so I walked in asking if they had any glasses, lenses, or contacts even remotely close to my prescription. Every employee took the time to help and look through options for me. The optometrist ended up finding spare daily contacts that would work and gave me a pair. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and went out of their way to help me. Such a thoughtful gesture, and thanks to them I can continue my trip actually being able to see. I'm incredibly grateful! read more

I had a very disappointing experience having the sunglass lenses in my frames replaced with optical lenses. Before leaving the frames, I specifically asked whether the work would be done in house and was told yes. When I picked them up, the original lenses were not returned ($300+ loss) As I tried to find out what had happened to the lenses, I learned that a third party had done the work. That contradicted what I had been told when I decided to use this retailer. The conversation also left me questioning the familiarity with the frame manufacturer that had been conveyed to me at the outset. Mistakes can happen, and I would have welcomed a straightforward explanation and some help resolving the missing lenses. Instead, the associate was defensive and discourteous, escalated the conversation, and placed the blame entirely on the third party. She offered no meaningful assistance or resolution. The missing lenses were frustrating, but the inaccurate account of who would do the work and the way my concern was handled made this a particularly poor experience. Lots of other options, including a block away. Lesson learned the hard way. read more

This place is great for unique frame styles you can rarely find anywhere else in the city. The optician, Daniel, although morbid is very helpful and informative when it comes to frame styling, we've definitely had some great times working together :) he's the person you want to ask for when coming in to shop. The manager of the office is very professional and she is able to handle almost anything and everything going on both upstairs and downstairs. There's an in-house lab so if you're looking for something quick, they may be able to get your new pair of glasses to you in less than the usual 7-10 day turnaround. Upstairs is the doctor's office and exam room. Downstairs is the optical department. High end lenses and coatings available as well. read more

Too bad zero stars isn't available. I'd give a zero stars to both City Optix and Dr. Rich Jeffrey, OD who owns this business and fails to properly manage it. Last year I had a pair of glasses made at City Optix and it was the worst experience on every front. First, I had to come back because I couldn't see clearly in my glasses. They supposedly re-did the glasses again.. Guess what? It was wrong again. This time, the lady in the front of the store got super rude with me, and sent me away saying that "their expensive machine cannot be wrong, it's my own fault for moving too much, and to go live my life and come back later if it really bothers me." Keep in mind that she never said "you have 14 days to get it corrected." After months of literal headaches from using the glasses, I came back and the same person refused to correct it and got extremely rude. I did a little bit more research on their "expensive machine." It's called a Shamir Spark and is extremely precise but only as accurate as the technician using it. So it appears that this store has a huge problem in training workers to use the expensive device and also in basic customer service. We later took the glasses to two other eyeglass stores who said that the technician was way off on the optical center of the glasses and the "OC height" was clearly wrong. They placed dots on my glasses where the optical center was and show that the only way to get those dots in the proper position was to hold the glasses up and out (about an inch from where they would naturally sit). Simply put, the lens was correct in the glasses but the optical center of the lens was in the wrong place relative to where the glasses sit on my face. One more thing: The clerk in the store admitted that they have a lot of turnover of people working in the store. It appears that this store tries to use an expensive machine to cover up for incompetent people but these people are either not smart enough or are not trained well enough to actually use the machine. Stay away from this business, shady and mean people all around. If you work at this business and want to do what is right, please contact me. read more

City Optix - Optometrists Near Me - San Francisco, California

Amazing staff and service. Receptionist and doctor were KIND and Incredibly helpful. Went above and beyond! I'm in SF periodically. I plan to move my family eye care here in the future. read more

My husband and I have both been going to City Optix for years for both our exams and for eyewear. We've always been happy with the service we received and the array of eyewear choices is pretty phenomenal compared to other places. I'm not a big reviewer, but wanted to give a special thanks to Rachel, the sales rep who helped me find my glasses (and computer glasses). The customer service she provided was exceptional and genuine. I've been wearing glasses since middle school and made my fair share of "middling" eyewear choices. With Rachel's help I've got two pairs of glasses I absolutely love. Thanks again for taking the time to help me and my husband find the right eyewear! read more

They wrote me an incorrect prescription in 2023 and then again in 2024. After they corrected the prescription, the glasses were made incorrectly. Needless to say, I put them on and they hurt my eyes. Not only they didn't apologize to me, they got rude and aggressive with me when I went in to see what is going on with the final pair they had made. They're unorganized and rude with the sole purpose of making you purchase the frame from them and if you don't, they get angry! Seriously?! It's unfortunate that I can't give them negative stars. Stay away as they will take your money and give you glasses you won't be able to use. I don't trust the optometrists here or the staff. They are unorganized and blame each other or gaslight the customer when something goes wrong. IMO they are rude and incompetent. I regret getting my glasses made by them and I'll never I set foot into the place again or recommend them. I hardly react to bad customer service but they're buying bad and as someone else mentioned, they'll get your blood boiling with their nonsense. They're terrible! read more

Always great here. Even though I moved out of SF, I kept my optometrist! Small space with the office/exam up a flight of stairs. Works great for me and everyone Is pleasant. They verified insurance coverage before my appointment too read more

I was highly referred to City Optix by a family member, so I took a chance on getting an eye exam. I love that they have an option on their website to set up an appt. I emailed them and a week later, Dr Rich reached out to me himself to make an appt. I have never had an eye exam before so I was a little nervous. Upon entering I was greeted and told to go upstairs for my exam. The receptionist was so nice and she took the time explaining about the tests and how they actually take an image of your eyes rather than dilating them. She gave me a series of tests and was so good about explaining all the steps. After the tests in that room I went into the exam room next door. Dr Rich was so nice and funny. He was very nice to talk with and put me at ease. The exam was painless, efficient and thorough. After my exam, the receptionist took me downstairs to check out. Kenisha was so nice with helping me pick out a pair of frames, one of the first pairs I tried on I fell in love with. I still wanted to look around just in case but nothing else jumped out at me. The price for the frames was decent not upmarked like most stores on Chestnut. I am happy to give my money to a local store rather than online. Kenisha got everything squared away with my insurance. I was grateful they don't try to upsell you here, payment was swift and easy. She told me my glasses with my prescription will be ready in 2 weeks. I am actually excited to have a nice pair of glasses and to be able to see more clearly. Thank you Dr. Rich, Kenisha, Kyle, J.J. and Daniel for the excellent customer service at your store. I highly recommend City Optix. read more

I recently had the most amazing experience with City Optix. I needed an optometrist as I'm new to SF and was able to make an appointment a week out! The appointment was smooth and the front desk girls were so nice about everything. The DR seemed like a nice older guy and I was in and out very quick. Then when I went to try on glasses I tried a few on then decided against getting any, and there wasn't any pressure or weirdness for not buying anything, which I appreciated. Happy to find a trustworthy optometrist in SF! read more

Was blind, but now I see ... Listening to the California Report this morning about the hunger strike, the 29,000 (out of over 130,000) California inmates who have refused meals for three days, protesting as they are able the practice of extended solitary confinement. Men interviewed who had lived in solitary for 15 years. Lived in a windowless box for 23 hours a day. And I wondered how we could be so blind. Would if I could charm the wares at City Optix so that in addition to sporting the finest of the fine in vision and visage accouterments the lenses would provide us with a different kind of world vision. Would that I could. I'll be back in the coming weeks to retire my last pair of Matsuda's and have the good doctor tell me that much to my consternation looking through them didn't actually deteriorate the lenses it was instead time that had changed my eyeballs. Which will be just fine by me, as I like their chair and getting to say which lens is better then asking to go back to do it again just to be sure because it was fun and I like doing it twice. My friends and I used to memorize the eye chart in grammar school so we wouldn't be sentenced to the glasses and it was only later that I realized that my moon pie face actually looks better with the addition. But for what City Optix has done nobody would ever even notice. The selection and the styles are top shelf. You'll part with a share of your hard-earned, but in my consistent experience, you get what you pay for. Staff are friendly, professional and oh so nice to look at in those fine, fine frames. read more

Doctor is good but the receptionist don't have any experience in customer services at all and very rude.

My mother has a Prescription for new glasses. Then, at City Optics on Chestnut, they lied about how quickly we could get new glasses- because needed asap. The process is Too slow and I feel the promise for quick service was a bait & switch. read more

What a nightmare Dr. Rich and his staff have been from the start. - I've asked for my prescription several times directly after my eye exam, and never received it. - Now his office is closed during the pandemic and neither he nor his staff are responding to emails - even though his email at the start of the pandemic says they're at full service. I'm now rationing contact lenses, and forced to wear my dailies for several days in a row. - I loved my old contact lenses, but Dr. Rich gave me the hard sell on the "ACUVE OASYS", a newer, more expensive version. He promised a $200 rebate if I ordered them from him. I finally succumbed to his pressure, ordered the contacts, and they can barely last me through an entire day before drying out my eyes. - I applied for the $200 rebate but it never arrived. I feel totally scammed by Dr Rich. But I hope he's enjoy the kickback he's receiving for slinging Acuve. read more

I like Dr. Rich and started going to him after I had a bad experience downtown when I had issues getting the right prescription for my glasses. My whole family goes there (husband and daughter) and they have been very helpful with paperwork for insurance. I highly recommend this business. Staff has been very helpful in getting the right pair of glasses for me. read more

I have never had such an infuriating retail experience before. Dr. Rich really is a nice guy, but some of his staff is completely unprofessional and rude. First off, the coating on my lenses started to bubble after 4 months. They will warranty this within 1 year, and they did attempt to make this right. Then there's the fact that I made an eye exam appointment over the phone, showed up, and they had no idea who I was. "Oh sorry, someone must not have put that appointment into the system". Cool. Glad I took time off work for that. After my eye exam, they got my prescription wrong TWICE. I had to make 3 separate visits to get what I paid for. After the SECOND time getting it wrong, the lady who I'd been dealing with had the nerve to gaslight me like I've never been gaslit before. "Well this is the prescription you asked for. You must have told me to order the wrong prescription" I'm sorry.. WHAT? She then tried to tell me I'd have to pay for another prescription to get the correct one. I requested a refund, "Let's just cancel this mess and part ways". She flatly refused. I had to walk out of there with my blood boiling, and make another appointment directly with Dr. Rich to go around this lady who was trying to hide her multiple mistakes from her boss. He was very embarrassed, apologized, and got me the right prescription in the end. Dr. Rich did single-handedly fix all the aforementioned problems. But the overall experience was horrible, and a massive waste of time and emotional energy. read more

Dr. Jeff Rich is an incredible eye doctor. He genuinely cares about his patients, is funny and kind, the exams are seamless, and if something isn't quite right post-appointment, he takes the time to work you into his schedule to figure it out. There is an extensive eyewear selection on the lower level to pick from. I'd recommend letting an associate know your budget and point you in the right direction or you may leave there spending a bit more than you anticipated. read more

Pro tip: get your eye exam here, take that prescription and go somewhere else to buy your glasses. Dr Rich is great. The staff working the store downstairs are ineffective, unhelpful, and generally terrible to work with as they lack the most basic customer service skills. It's been over a month since I placed an order for a new pair of glasses. Though they were supposed to be ready in 2 weeks, I still do not have them. Delays on orders are understandable. Not reaching out with an updated estimated delivery date in the face of known delays is pure incompetence. read more

The things I like about this place matter enough to me that I'll make my way to one of my least favorite parts of San Francisco. I dislike the Marina, I try to avoid it. Honestly I just don't fit in or feel comfortable around abnormal pretentious snobbery. what matters? Selection and service. The people who work here are super nice, they do a great job and never got pushy. The selection is good enough that I was able to find a pair of glasses in my price range that I really liked. I was also able to find some I really liked way over my price point, maybe next time. This place has a tendency to be high in proce, like I said the people aren't pushy and don't try to upsell. The location really does suck as it's right on the busy part of Chestnut. Try to stay on the positive side, lots of happy hours around if you time it right. Parking isn't really that bad during off peak pretension hour and they are open till 8 on Thursday nights. read more

Wish I could give 0 stars. If you like your dignity steer clear. I went in to find some new glasses but was quickly insulted by the store clerk and told that every frame I liked was too wide for my face and that 'we just don't have anything narrow enough for you here.' Just went with my daughter to order glasses from this place. I was kind of skeptical because of the reviews but I'm glad I went in. We were helped by a young lady named Samara who was awesome. My experience was unique, but overall, still worth the time and efforts thanks to Samara and Dr. Rich. Due to COVID-19 regulations, everyone wore masks and had a maximum occupancy as well as temperature monitoring/hand sanitizers to help make the office and shop a safe environment. I ordered Cutler & Gross sunglasses that were advertised on their company's website. It turns out they were discontinued a few days after that (Good God, my timing was bad), and after looking at several pairs in the shop, I declined an alternative frame. A prospective solution was to bring a Cutler & Gross rep who searched far and wide and found the pair I wanted in Europe, so I had to wait some time. I had some minor vision issues with a recent prescription on a diff pair that I was told to me by Dr. Rich, but after he verified the numbers with me with a free secondary exam, we used the prescription first established. That helped bring peace of mind before we ordered the prescription lenses. Eventually, the pair came back to the SF office and it looked great. I love it. I know a lot of other people have expressed their strong dislike and I've been called many rude names, but it's fine. I mainly needed a backup pair of prescription sunglasses. Overall, Samara was intensely involved with the process and I appreciate her efforts over ~3 months. She did great work and was worth the numerous Lyft trips and walks to the offices. Be sure to thank her with a nice iced latte from Starbucks (two doors down) when you get your pair. It's least that we can do to show support and appreciation. Thank you, Samara! read more

Great selection, reasonable prices for high end optics. They are great, and everyone knows it, so take a chill pill, and go when you have some extra time. You won't be the only person in the store. When they get to you, they will do a great job.... I know, I am not patient, but I've been coming back for more then 20 years for a reason. read more

I really enjoyed my experience with Dr.Rich. He did a great job of explaining everything while still making me feel comfortable. After the exam he suggested I get glasses for my astigmatism and to block blue light. Super helpful and I'm happy my vision is better. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the staff downstairs was not welcoming and it felt like I was burdening them by being there. However, Collin is the exception. He was so nice and helped me try a lot of different frames. I'd go back solely for Dr.Rich and Collin. read more

Such a selection of gorgeous frames! Yes, they're a little pricier but worth it. They take VSP insurance. Jeff Rich, O. D. is a fine doctor. He explained to me what probably happened with the LensCrafters progressives I got a couple of months ago that seemed wrong. Frank, one of their ever-patient salespeople/techs, went through all my insurance options as I was trying to decide whether to simply update my prescription in my last pair of City Optix glasses, or get an entire new pair. I fell in love with a pair but ultimately decided to be frugal and just buy lenses for my old frames. I did express some wishy-washiness, though, and sure enough, late at night I changed my mind and wanted the new frames. The staff were kind enough to return my frantic voicemail in the morning, canceled the order for lenses, and will be measuring me for the new pair as soon as I can get there. Also, they offered to adjust the frame fit on my several-years-old pair that I purchased there, and reassured me that the new pair will be right or they'll work on them until they are. I'm a big fan of City Optix, this will be pair #3. UPDATE: The glasses are PERFECT. Now I understand how progressive lenses are SUPPOSED to work! read more

I've always gotten great quality lenses here. I've been going to Dr. Rich for more than 20 years and I trust him completely. I know I can always count on Frank to make sure everything is done correctly. Emily is also very helpful when looking for frames that fit your style and your face. I hate this place so much I can't even muster up the wit to write a snarky review. Here are the highlights: -Racist comments from the optometrist! After learning I grew up in the neighborhood he currently resides in, conversations with Dr. X turned to the middle school I attended. He then went on to talk about how he didn't send his kids there due to the prominence of a particular race. I'd brought my best friend (that I grew up with) along to pick out frames, and he had the exact same conversation with her while I was out of the room, during which he articulated (in even more detail!) his lack of tolerance for racial diversity in schools. I was disgusted. -WORST customer service! After enduring the racist remarks of Dr. X, I can't believe I lingered to look at frames. After waiting ten minutes to be helped, Aaron sidled up to "assist." I explained to him the style I was looking for and showed him my current glasses (which I love) so he could pull some looks for me. After all of my descriptors, he pulled the exact opposite of what I wanted, all at price points above $500. After his lack of assistance, I moseyed to the Pro Design Denmark case to try on the frames my friend has (at her suggestion) and Aaron, in a completely rude way, told me "You know, it's dorky to wear the same glasses as your best friend." At that point, I asked for my prescription and walked out. So unless you love feeding money to everything you oppose, I seriously, completely, and with every fiber of my being implore you to go elsewhere. read more

This review goes out to all those with "omigod you're blind" glasses prescriptions. If you're like me, you've turned your handicap into bragging rights ("-3? Child's play. Try -8, beyotch."). You've stopped stressing about your myopia getting worse every year and now hope to reach legally blind status so the gov't will pay for your eye care. If your glasses are wafer thin and cost less than $100 total, City Optix has some stylish frames, but you could also shop around. If you're like me before I discovered this place and would rather stay home from work than wear glasses in public or have to slap on a pound of mascara so you won't look like an alien behind those Millhouse Coke-bottle lenses, then you MUST get your glasses here. They have a secret German man, Alex, who has mastered a revolutionary lens-grinding technique that the Chinese gov't is scheming to get its hands on. I discovered him after overhearing a Marina trophy wife demand that he and only he be the one to handle her husband's lenses. Those ladies can be a handful, but their shopping instinct is razor-sharp. The result: the thinnest, most wearable glasses that I've had since 3rd grade. I like their in-house frames, similar to H&M knock-offs of designer brands. People compliment my two-tone mocha-beige pair all the time. The staff is also wonderfully patient and helpful about choosing styles. The lenses are not cheap but are sooo worth it. Mine cost about the same as a small show dog or fancy mountain bike. Hopefully you have VSP or a big tax refund. They also have a Haight St. location. read more

After recently discovering that I am not a candidate for any refractive surgery (LASIK) and that I should stop wearing contacts at the advice of my eye doctor I went to City Optix desperate to spend my money after hearing that they were "the best" and that they could do anything. WRONG! I was in the market for some prescription Oakleys (or any other sport frames) to race triathlon in. I walked into City Optix and they were very nice. They quickly said that with my RX, Oakley's and most other true sport glasses would not be an option due to the wrap of the frame. The politely showed me some other regular sunglasses that could work and took my information down so that they could call Oakley and the lens guy that they worked with "the best in the world" to see what they could do. I was told not to expect much, at best an old Oakley frame with the lens "etched" into the main lens that looks absolutely dreadful. They took my number and told me they would call me the next day (I am still waiting for the call and it's been a month). I was wanting to keep my business local and went there even though I knew I could get what I actually wanted on the web. The owner of City Optix told me that "perhaps you shouldn't be an athlete, because your eyes won't permit it"...ummm that's just not an option. The option is to get the right RX sport glasses. Bottom line is the owner nor any of his employees EVER called me back and I went to an online business and spent $650 on my Oakley Jawbones and they are spectacular and will allow me to race without looking like a complete douche in non sport eyewear. Mr City Optix, this is truly your loss. I would have been back for many more pair had you even attempted to work with me and had not told me that I should consider not being an athlete. This just goes to show if you actually want the business, you will see what you can do. read more

It's been awhile since I've taken time to sit down and write a review, but in this case, I think it's necessary. I've been going to City Optix for 2 years for eye exams. The first year, everything seemed ok. The second year has been a never-ending headache that I just can't get rid of! I went in for a contact lens exam as usual and got a strange feeling that something wasn't right. The first part of the exam that was done by a woman who was joking around with a coworker and hardly paying attention to me. I felt uneasy and as if she didn't even know what she was doing! When I saw the doctor, I asked for both a contact lens prescription and a glasses prescription. The contacts seemed fine, so I ordered them. I took the glasses prescription with me to purchase my glasses somewhere else as I am not impressed with their selection at all. As I was leaving and ordering my contacts, the doctor said to me in a snotty voice: "You'd better talk to your employer because your insurance sucks!" Um, ok. I wrote that off and laughed like "whatever.. thanks." When I came back to pick up my contacts and paid (WAY too much... beware... go on 1800contacts, you can find them MUCH cheaper), I asked for all of the info/paperwork for the rebate. They assured me that I had everything and sent me on my way. I get home and notice that the prescription is WRONG! It's my rx from the previous year. When I brought them back, the woman laughed like it was a funny mistake. NOT funny to me at all. They replaced them with the correct prescription, which I triple checked before I left. Fast forward to me getting my new glasses that I paid $300 for at another store. I put them on and I feel like I am going to throw up! The store told me to wear them and bring them back if I am still feeling sick or strange in them. A week later, I am nauseous from wearing them... still! I went back to City Optix to get my rx checked and the doctor changed it, slightly. I thought I was all set. Fast forward to me getting my 2nd pair of glasses. They STILL make me feel sick! Long story short, I am out $300 thanks to City Optix. Not to mention how rude the doctor was to me when I went back for the re-exam. He had so much attitude that I left feeling like I was going to cry. Not necessary at all. A few months passed and I went online to check the status of my contact lens rebate. It says INVALID!!!! INVALID?!?! After a huge headache of trying to get ahold of the company, they tell me that City Optix didn't do the paperwork/receipts correctly and I can't get my rebate. This place makes me so angry... I will NEVER be coming back and I'll tell anyone who I know that's thinking of going there to STAY AWAY. Thanks for the awful experience, City Optix! read more

Buyer, beware...I shopped here twice, and both times customer service was slow and clearly in need of training. On my first trip, I found some great frames, and was told they cost X. I asked for the name of the frame; I was told "we don't normally tell people the names." I guess that's one way to cut down on competition. When I went back the second time (one week later) to possibly buy the frames, I was told that they were over $100 MORE than I was told the first time. I asked why the price went up, and was met with a blank stare. I asked why she told me X without checking to be sure that was the right price; again, some nervous laughter, but no explanation. Ugh. While this was going on, the only other customer service rep in the store was on the phone, explaining to a customer that had just left that the store had undercharged her by $19, and that the store would not complete her order until she called back and agreed to pay the extra amount. All of this added up, and I left. A real shame, because they have some beautiful frames, but they are in desperate need of training in customer service. I realize I was shopping in one of the more expensive parts of an expensive city, but I don't think that excuses sloppy salemanship. Plenty of other high-end frame stores on that same street, let alone in the City. read more

This is a review of City Optix at 2154 Chestnut Street, San Francisco. I've used City Optics for over ten years. The optician is friendly, but the Chestnut store sales staff try too hard to provide good customer service, and it just feels self-conscious. A week after I placed my order the sales person called me to say he'd used an old price list to calculate my cost. He wanted more money. I should have canceled the order right then, because this happened once before. I won't go back to the Chestnut store, but I might keep going to their Haight Street store where I've had a good experience. And from now on I will comparative shop before I hand over my credit card. read more
