I was assisted by Day Beutler to purchase glasses. He has an amazing eye and also really knows the store's inventory. Moreover, the store had a wide enough selection to satisfy my needs I have a narrow face. Many opticians have trouble helping me find frames that work for me. When Day helped me find glasses, he went off and within five minutes we had a dozen pairs of glasses on the table next to me. Most were good and some were great. Of course, he also helped me sort through them and assess them to make a final decision. Not only do Eye Gotcha have a fantastic selection of great frames but their customer experience is fantastic. They special ordered a frame for me in a color way that they didn't have in stock and, typical me, when I actually picked up my glasses I didn't like it. The staff at Eye Gotcha Optometric is very nice and professional and I appreciated getting my eye exam and glasses here. Exam: Dr. Bauer was very kind and patient, and he provided me with a very comprehensive and detailed eyeglass exam, while at the same time explaining what each test was for, and how things may have changed throughout time, or since the last time I had an exam. He was able to answer almost all of my questions (had to look one up online), and he made sure I felt comfortable at all times. Optical Selections: The frames and lenses selection here is vast, featuring many smaller boutique brands. They work with a number of labs to customize lenses to the patient's desired specifications, which I was able to do. Optician: Unfortunately, albeit nice, the optician I worked with could not answer my questions, and seemed to have selected my lenses on my behalf without proper consultation. If I had not gotten involved, I would have received polycarbonate lenses, which I haven't used in decades given my prescription. No indication of trivet or hi-index lenses was even offered. I also inquired about lens technologies and AR coatings and I was unable to get clear answers throughout. I believe that the role of the optician is to help patients better understand different lens technologies, ensure glasses match and fit patients' prescriptions, help choose lenses that are adaptive to the patient's lifestyle, and explain the benefits of different lens options. Not knowing the answers is one thing, but not proactively trying to assist in looking up what the differences were was a bit concerning. I ended up having to repeatedly ask and look up differences in my phone myself before another optician was able to chime in and provide me with some insight. Billing: While building out my lenses, I was not provided me with a clear breakdown of costs, and I had to ask several times to ensure that the lenses were created to my requested specifications. Good thing that I checked several times, as there was an overcharge for my AR coating that is supposed to be covered by my vision insurance during the final review (which was caught) prior to payment. Overall: The people here are great, the location is convenient, the options and selections are plentiful, so I will definitely will be back. My only suggestion is to do your research on lenses and lens options prior to coming in. read more

doctors are great, but I always feel intimidated and nervous by sales associates. They were not happy when I asked for the frames that were covered by my health plan instead of the $$$$ ones. They didn't get the progressive levels on the lenses right, so took them back to fix. A month went by and they never called to tell me my glasses were ready. When I called, they said they were in. I tried them on. They still didn't seem right, but they said they were fixed. They definitely were not. Every time I wear these glasses my neck hurts. Bummer. read more

I have been going to Eye Gotcha for close to 20 years and continued to even after moving to the East Bay. I've liked their selection of glasses and their recommendations, even if they are a bit pricey. I called last Wednesday to make an appointment; they said they had a last minute cancellation on that Saturday at 11am and said it's mine if I want it. I took it. They even looked up my VSP and have a record of that. I arrive to the appointment exactly on time, and they said they don't have me down. They said the 11am person didn't confirm, and they'll take me if they don't show up! I said I am the 11am person. The person arrived 15 min late, and they took him directly while I sat there. They didn't try to keep my business of 20 years. I was ready to put down serious cash on funky glasses. I've noticed an operational decline in their staff in the last few years. One technician bent my glasses, and I had to go back for them to fix them. Last time the tint they recommended was way too dark. The fixed both issues without much fuss, but this last experience proved it's not worth it. read more

It took two and half months to get my ordered glasses. As someone who has been going to this store in the past few years, my most recent experience has been disappointing at best. - Zero follow-up from the staff after you paid for the money. I bought a pair of $550 frame + prescription from here. Was under the impression it would arrive in 1-2 weeks. My visit was 12/30 but I received my frames in late Feb after emailing the store, calling the store to track down the shipment multiple times. Fantastic. Best selection I've seen in the greater Bay Area. It tends to the outre, maybe, but that's part of the fun. And it's nothing but high quality. I'm on my third pair from these good people. The one time they did my prescription, it was dead on. Very happy in that department, too. And the people couldn't be nicer or more competent. Lyndsey helped me with my last two pair. When I came in and suggested (roughly and ineloquently) what I had in mind, she came back with a handful of great suggestions. Which in both cases included the frames I ended up buying. (I had looked over the whole collection.) She also fixed the one pair when I bent them. Perfect. Good as new. And she couldn't be more pleasant to work with. This place is an easy recommendation. I walked into Eye Gotcha after going to Sunglass Hat to have them help me replace the lenses on a pair of sunglasses I bought from them. Sunglass Hat was unable to help and apparently they wore down the screw in the process, making it nearly impossible to take apart the frame to change the lenses. Jason at Eye Gotcha helped me within a minute of my arrival. He pointed out the issue, and then worked diligently for 10 minutes or so to get the screw out and allow the frame to be taken apart, and thus change my lenses. He even replaced the damaged screw for me! When all was said and done, Jason didn't even charge me. Customer happiness clearly matters a lot at Eye Gotcha. I will be going to back to them for all my eye glass needs in the future! read more

5 stars for Dr Higuchi. He was thorough, professional and made the eye exam comfortable and easy. 1 star for everything that happened after the eye exam. * I brought my own pair of new designer frames to be filled. After two of the staff said unflattering things about the designer, they then tried to get me to purchase a set of their frames made by "less commercial" designers. I was open to considering other options and asked to browse their selection, but I was not allowed to due to COVID. Ok, fine. They picked out about 5 frames they thought would look good on me. None of them ultimately worked for me, so I stuck with my Tom Ford frames. * I mentioned the name of another optical store I've been patronizing for over 15 years. They went on to say disparaging things about the quality of that store's product and the training of their staff. I found this very unprofessional. *  I am a visual artist for a living. My eyesight is critical. I let them know this when I arrived for my exam and I brought a list of the things I need to be able to see and the distance at which I needed to see them. I gave this to the Dr and also the Optician. * I left my frames with them to fill with Progressive lenses. I was told I'd get my glasses back in about a week. When two weeks passed, I called and asked where my glasses were, but no one knew. Turns out they lost my frames and didn't tell me. They said that if they couldn't locate them, I'd need to purchase a different frame. (What??) If I hadn't called to ask where my glasses were, they wouldn't have even noticed they were missing. FOUR weeks after my exam, I finally was able to pick up my glasses. By contrast, my partner got a pair of glasses filled in just 4 days from an optical shop in Rockridge. * I could not see through the lenses well at all, even after giving them 2+ weeks to adjust. The distances I needed to see at weren't even close. I made notes about what I needed vs what the glasses were allowing me to see and made another appointment to go back in. * I went back in for another appointment, and gave the optician the same sheet of notes that I had brought with me to my eye exam. This time, I added what the glasses were actually letting me see vs what I needed to be able to see. After explaining the issue, the optician seemed stumped and said he'd have to think about how to approach it after I left. This did not give me a lot of confidence. * SIX weeks after this appointment, I still hadn't heard from Eye Gotcha. During this period, a relative of mine went into hospice and I had I had to leave town for 2 weeks. Once I got back into town, I called Eye Gotcha to ask what was going on with my glasses. They said that 3.5 weeks after my last appointment they texted me to tell me to pick them up. I never got this text. First of all, who just texts? Why not call and leave a message? or email? or both? And just once? Why not reach out again? And second, even if I had received said text, it still took 3.5 weeks for them to redo the glasses. * Before I left the store with the redone lenses, the optician said he needed to adjust them. They felt just fine on my face but he said they were crooked. Ever since I left the store, the glasses won't stay on my face. They keep slipping down my nose and I'm constantly pushing them back up. This wasn't an issue before he adjusted them. * For the next two weeks, I couldn't see through the glasses. Nothing at close or mid range would focus despite tilting my head every which direction. The only thing I could see was the television across the room, and only then if I brought the glasses to a certain spot on my face. I wore them religiously every day because I'd spent so much time and money thus far, I just desperately wanted/needed them to work. * After 2 weeks, I emailed the store outlining my issues, so they could understand what my challenges were. They are difficult to reach by phone and it takes a long time to get an appointment, so I figured email would be best so they could review the issue in detail, discuss how to address it, and then respond. Well, it's been over a week and I've never gotten a response, phone call or email. This, despite their website saying "We respond to most emails same or next day". Now, I get it. We're in COVID. Some things take longer. But, this is just becoming ridiculous. My eye exam was mid-August. And i'm writing this review mid-December. $500 later (not including the cost of the frame) I still don't have glasses I can see out of. But, I should note, they sent the bill to my insurance company within 24 hours. I thoroughly researched reviews online before I chose Eye Gotcha, and made my decision based on everyone's glowing recommendation. But, my experience just doesn't mirror others. Perhaps I'm an anomaly. I'd still highly recommend Dr Higuchi for an eye exam. However, I'd recommend you go elsewhere if you have a Progressive Rx and want it done accurately in a timely manner. read more

Emmett was so helpful and friendly! During my appointment with him, he went to to the back 4 times to fix my glasses till they were perfect. He replaced my nose pads with a softer material and fixed everything else so the glasses fit more snuggly on my face. This place has become my go-to for my glasses needs. read more

I am hesitating to write this review. I tried to find contact information for Drs. Haney and Higuchi to let them know my experience directly, but I couldn't find any. This practice has been terrific for years, and definitely since 2011 since I have been a patient. I have seen both docs--they are superb. But the staff is such an important part of a practice like this that I am moving over to another practice, due to an unpleasant conversation. I called with a question about the new multifocal and progressive contact lenses. I still don't know the answer, which I will find out some other way I guess. Mostly what transpired is that Lyndsey blamed me, interrupted me, and raised her voice several times. Even when I asked her to speak more respectfully. The staff have always been so helpful. But I do need to understand my eye care, so I am moving on. Good thing Yelp is here so I can so some research! read more

How I love Eye Gotcha Optometric in San Francisco! Since my previous optometrist retired, I've gone to Eye Gotcha for new reading/computer glasses along with a pair of blue prescription sunglasses (Mykita Mylon) and could not be more pleased with their customer service as well as the quality of the products they're selling. In addition to new glasses, they were able to help me restore a pair of IC Berlin sunglasses that I hadn't been able to wear in years. Ensure you make an appointment with them as they're very busy. Once you arrive, they check you temperature as well as make you sanitize your hands, which is a nice touch. Safety first! read more

Dr. Higuchi's been my eye doc since shortly after I arrived in 2000. He and his capable, friendly and knowledgeable staff have always taken great care of me. I wore contacts for a very long time, and had high expectations for my vision (I'm an engineer and photographer, and I love being in the mountains). His careful exams and prescriptions always kept my contact lens vision razor sharp. Over several years, he helped keep my vision as good as possible as cataracts "matured." (Insurance is fussy about that.) And when it was time for them to come out, he referred me to one of the City's best ophthalmologists. I got a great result - nearly 20/20! - and when I came back for a postop exam he helped me decide on the best way to take "crystal clear" back to "razor sharp." read more

I started coming here for glasses 20 years ago, when friends who had moved to Santa Cruz admitted they still came back to Eye Gotcha and Dr. Higuchi in spite of living across a small mountain range from SF. It's still great. The people who work there have actual opinions about what looks good on you, and I've learned to trust them. Recently I brought in a pair of broken glasses I'd bought there over five years ago into the store. A whole hinge was missing. Jason looked at it, and not only replaced the hinge but corrected a deformation in the frame that had occurred over time. Very matter-of-fact competent but continuously lovely and helpful. It took five trips to the back to get everything ironed out, because he wanted it to be just right. Dr. Haney was so much fun to talk with as I got my first eye exam. She was very considerate and patient in explaining what was happening with my eyes and what would happen over the next couple of decades. For someone unfamiliar with eye care, she is a great doctor to help understand eye health in layman's terms. Over the years since, Emmett, Nate and Jason have seen to my subsequent upgrades in frames for transitional lenses (for outdoor) and bifocals for work. I had an amazing experience here at Eye Gotcha. I was referred here by a friend and I am very happy he did. They do accept VSP Insurance plans which is also another reason I wanted to go here. I called in January and there was a few weeks wait before their first available appointment but it was worth the wait. I had my appointment with Dr. Haney (Sorry, if that is misspelled). She was extremely nice and made me feel comfortable with everything in my eye exam. While picking out which frames that I wanted to buy for my new glasses the customer service was great. Peter Guterres was helping me and he pulled out a bunch of frames that he thought would suit my face well. We then sat down and tried them all on and he helped me figure out which ones were the best fit for me. It was great, I ended up buying some pretty amazing frames that look great and I am very happy with them. When I picked up my new glasses one week later, Peter helped me again and had me try them on to make sure they fit well. He does not rush you through the eye exam. He is upbeat, energetic, jovial, and quick to laugh. At the end of the exam, he has you look at a chart with the machine setup with your current prescription. I had a major crisis, my daughter's glasses broke. She cried all morning and refused to go to school. She finally calmed down and wore her back up pair to school.
