I saw the article about Dimitri in the Chron several months ago, but had to wait to go until my VSP said I could get a checkup. So I went to my optometrist and got checked and got a new prescription. I went in and met Deejay and Johanna (Dimitri was nowhere to be found on several visits), who were very nice and helpful. I spent probably an hour looking and frames and got really unique frames that look great. It turned out that my optometrist had changed my prescription without explaining to me what she was doing. When I got the glasses, I couldn't read with them which is what I mainly do with them. Deejay looked at my old glasses and figured out what had happened to my prescription. He said to go back to the optometrist and get rechecked and that opticians and optometrists have an understanding that under these circumstances, the remake of the lenses would be at no charge. So I just got my new lenses and they are great. Do go here if you want unique frames that you will see no where else. They are the only people in the US who carry the Derapage frames I got. Do not go here if you want glasses that are cheap or even moderately priced. They do not take VSP. I have a difficult prescription and so the frames were $600 and the lenses were $600. If you want moderately priced glasses, go to City Optics. They are great also. read more

I keep coming back to Spectacles For Humans because Olga has an amazing fashion sense, knows which frames will complement the shape of your face, and regularly introduces new designers you can't find anywhere else. Due to my prescription (I'm EXTREMELY nearsighted), it can be a challenge to find frames that will not only work for my prescription, but also look good on me. A couple of weeks ago I needed an upgrade, and Olga fixed me up with an amazing design by Robert La Roche. They frame my eyes and sit on my face perfectly! Olga comes through every time. I have a collection of over 200 pairs of vintage sunglasses so when i broke a lens Larry David style yesterday on my vintage PERSOLS i went to lenscrafters, which belongs to the same company that owns PERSOL. they were dumbfucks. straight up lame. i knew their job better than they did. what else is new. dialed up yelp and found this joint, got on the phone and it would be highly unlikely that one could have a more pleasant business exchange from that point forward. the man had my replacement lenses crafted in less than 20 minutes, answered all my nosey questions about his craft with the articulation and passion of an artisan that actually gives a fuck about his profession. even showed me how the gizmos work. i hope he follows up with his apparent desire to one day create custom shades because he will have a customer here. yay for people who love their work! read more

EYE had been EYEing these cute, red sunglasses that reminded me of Max Headrum for quite some time. Well really only like a month, which is about the longest span of time EYE can wait for something before splurging well beyond my monetary means. EYE finally went in today and bought them, but EYE also tried on about 80% of the other EYEwear. Man oh MAN! they have a selection. Enough, this place will make you want to throw your contacts away or reverse your Lasik just to buy a pair of frames from here. This is my first scathing Yelp review. I'm not typically compelled to complain unless I find service to be inhumanly unacceptable. I'm even more compelled to write this after reading Two D.'s review below. Apparently, we had an almost identical experience. I ordered (and put money down on) a pair of $600 glasses four months ago, and have JUST today gotten confirmation that they have shipped. Two weeks after I paid for the glasses, I called and was told that the glasses were coming from Japan and that it would be a few weeks. After a few weeks had passed, I called the shop, got no response, then emailed. A week later, I dropped by to see a sign up on the door that the shop had flooded. I have compassion for a business disaster like this, but if SFH had any sort of service ethic they would have called their pending-order clients to let them know that business was put on hold until repairs were made. When the shop reopened, I stopped in and they offered me a pair of loaner frames in a different color than I ordered. I'm fairly certain that they just weren't able to sell the purple frames and were trying to pawn them off on me. Just last week, I stopped in and gave an ultimatum - either confirm that I will get my glasses within a week, or I demand my money back. With service like this, I am fairly certain that this shop is not long for this world. This experience was entirely unacceptable. I strongly urge fellow eyeglass shoppers to find another business to take their money to. No high-end frames are worth the agony of dealing with SFH. read more

Truly disappointing, especially after reading all the reviews here. I found the selection overall pretty limited and mundane (my past 3 pairs of eyeglasses have been very happy and easy purchases at New York shops, from the Japanese Facial Index to the vintage Fabulous Fannie's)....yes, they have imported Japanese and European brands I have not seen elsewhere, but even those seemed pretty tepid and similar in style. Definitely targeted more for men, with more square shapes and wider variety of metals. But put on top of this a VERY aggressive saleswoman, who, after I described what I was looking for, handed me a pair of specs with the phrase "This is exactly what you described"....suffice it to say it was only vaguely in the arena of what I was looking for. Everyone I've shown the picture I took with the glasses have described them as too large for my face (fit being a sort of a fundamental need in a chic pair of glasses). She only showed me other pairs when I pressed for them, and continued to say the first ones she picked out were the right ones. Of course they were nearly $450 dollars. I don't know whether the hard sell was based on their limited selection or a desperate bid, but either way, I was glad to leave and never return. read more

Ok Grunhauser, I don't storm, never needed to. The lab is responsible for the lenses. There isn't any value that you offered. As far as the refund goes, that would be my bank issuing a credit until you had enough in your account to cover what was due. If you were to fabricate a new frame, which you didn't, you would have made measurements and I would have been aware of this. The truth is that you don't return phone calls and you tweaked the frames insuring the Rx to fail from having lenses off axis. Did I mention of the cuts on the bridge of my nose from your uber-hip, but poorly design frames. It's too bad Dimitri, let my receipt be the best judge of character. read more

I would give 10 stars if I could! The glasses are awesome there. High-end/ good quality. I got a pair and my mom did too (she was in town for a brief stay). My sister and dad plan to get new glasses there too when they are due. I can't say enough great things about Olga!!! Super nice, and very knowledgable about what looks good on people. I feel like I made a friend for life - she is so sweet! And, after going to 6 other people in Oakland where I live, without a doubt, Olga can adjust glasses better than anyone. I have to say I had a 5 star experience. The first frames I chose ended up with two problems: the new prescription wasn't right and the frames were falling off my nose. After a few iterations of trying to get them working I had been demoralized. The owner and I decided to just go with another frame. I probably had to come back and visit 8 times in total. They didn't give me a run around any of the times I came in and were very customer service oriented. I really appreciated that after having a terrible experience the last time I upgrade my glasses. As a repeat customer, I can't say enough good things about the selection and quality -- a wonderful variety of unique and fashionable eye wear. My experiences with the staff has always been great. I usually saunter in sweaty and disheveled from a long uphill bike ride dressed in my grimy, ink-covered studio garb and I have always been met with a warm welcome by everyone there. Their patience and help in assisting my selection was impressive. I never felt pressured and three honest and varied opinions is always appreciated. warning: i'm a sucker for ultra high end and obscurely-branded consumer products, and when it came to eyeglasses, it was no different. This place carries super unique and high end frames, many of which, you probably won't find in many places in this country. no joke. I gotta admit, if you asked me to explain why my $475 reiz frames are better quality than your Prada or (insert Italian designer name) frames, I wouldn't really be able to do that... BUT.... you can ask Dmitri, who is super cool, super helpful and really knows his shit. Alright, some people don't give two sh&ts about their glasses. Those people think glasses serve only a utilitarian function, and it's a chore to replace the frames every year. This store carries frames from small international producers, who yearly make limited batches of frames. None of these brands are typically found in major American retailers. Spectacles for Humans carries brands like Strada Del Sole, Mykita, and Reiz. They do NOT sell the "masstige" brands like Prada, Ralph Lauren, and Oakley. I don't say that with any pretentiousness. It's just that when you've worn glasses your entire life, it's truly refreshing to find a place that offers real alternatives from the stock carried by big box stores. And when I say alternative, their glasses are out of the norm, but still retain style and taste. Don't worry, you're not walking out with mismatched hendecagons sitting atop your nose. Finally, don't let their European demeanor (and our stereotypes) fool you into thinking they don't understand the real bottom line, customer satisfaction. In addition from their unique selection in eye-wear, Dimitri and company understand the ultimate goal is you being thrilled about your glasses. Great selection of frames, but minus two stars for the service. After much discussion with the owner over whether I should just buy the frames and get lenses at my 'in network' provider, he convinced me that my existing optician's prices were so high that the price would work out about the same if I went w/ BP+, and I would have my new specs for the weekend, where I'd have to wait for weeks otherwise. I spent nearly 500 bucks and was assured by the owner that I would be (partly) reimbursed by my insurer in two weeks. That was about a month ago. When I called my insurer yesterday they had no record of the claim at all. So far I've left two voicemails for the bp+ guy and haven't heard a peep. By all means, check out their awesome frames but reserve your expectations for speedy insurance admin from these folks! **UPDATE** The owner of the store asked if I'd update my review, so here goes...I got a refund from my insurer for 65 whole dollars, not quite what I was expecting, after the owners returned from a European trade show - which explains the lack of response. read more

Even if I wasn't optically challenged, I'd find a way to buy a delicious pair of frames from this boutique. Glasses are the windows to your *soul* 'cuz their style and colors will already convey your hipness without any eyelids needing batting (that blue/brown eye color thing is sooo last year). So you wanna make sure you get something good, right? In all seriousness, though, I have a weird face (I deal, I got over it) that most glasses look like crap on. I'm talking I can chug through most glass shops and not find a single pair that doesn't monobrow me or fall off my nose. Then I traipsed into Spectacles for Humans, and my world was complete. I didn't find just *one* pair that looked awesome- I found *many*. I had to make a *decision*. This was really *weird*. The shop carries elite high-end frame designs such as DeromeBrennar (funky layered plastic) and Orgreens (sleek and futurist metal frames). The frames are made my hand by small companies who really work hard at making something good. When you put these frames on, there isn't any creaking, flimsiness, or cheapness. They all feel solid. Which is good, because my prescription is so strong, it kills. I'm serious- my lenses are so thick, in reverse, you can do that magnifying trick with ants. Many frames can't handle the truth. Spectacles' frames *can*. I'm surprised people are saying they had bad service- I worked with a Deejay, and he was extremely helpful and considerate. No pressure, informative, honest, and he was handing me frames that worked for my face so I didn't need to try on everything in the shop. I could even pick up a frame and ask, "would this work on me?" and he'd shake his head, saving my nose the application of yet another nosepad. He also recommended this new high-index lens that blew me away with how crisp everything looks now. It's like a filter was washed clean. I can never wear my old glasses again. My only regret is that they don't take vision insurance, but it sounds like that really screws over the glass shops anyway, and the prices at Spectacles would be crazy higher if they did. Purple!!! Did I mention that they are really expensive purple sunglasses? They have a great selection of designers I've never heard of and the service is outstanding. They were really nice, helpful and totally sold me. They also stock a decent selection of Japanese brands that fit Asian faces really well. If you have that problem with other glasses that sit on your cheekbones or don't fit quite right on the bridge of your nose, come check this place out. And bring your wallet. The decor and background music are all very modern and cool. If you are modern and cool, you will feel right at home. I took about three weeks to buy my frames, and I never received any kind of high-pressure sales treatment in my repeated visits to the store. From the screwless Mykitas that fold and unfold forcefully with German assertiveness thanks to their hinge springs, to the ascetically sculpted temple curves on a handmade PropoDesign, to the subtly detailed hues and retro appeal of a DeromeBrenner, you will only find exceptionally crafted frames that stand at the apex of the art and -- needless to say -- come with a price to match. Thanks to Dimitri's superlative ability to match frames with my face, after racking my pea-sized brain I finally settled on "Gerber" in white by Reiz Augenspiel. Now I rarely do white ANYTHING because it clashes with the dark night of my soul and sexy depressive appeal, but DAMN my new spectacles are smokin' and BURN WITH THE WHITE HEAT OF TEN THOUSAND VIRGINS -- PRAISE ALLAH! Rectangular, handmade and hand polished with three layers of cellulose acetate in different colors (white-clear-white), the transparent acetate layer sandwiched between the milky outer layers give the frames a distinct three-dimensional depth and a pellucid, opalescent brilliance that reminds me of semen strands on a pearl necklace. And not only was I floored by Dimitri's ability to match the frame to my face, he also transformed Gerber into sunglasses by cutting and inserting gradient lenses GRATIS. I'll definitely return once I have the cash I'll make from harvesting my internal organs and giving a shitload of back alley blowjobs. And you, dear reader, you should definitely visit and marvel at the frames on display here -- and if you can't, you're a fascist shithead and I hate you. It was a typical beautiful Saturday morning in Noe. Farmer's market in full swing. My husband, 2yr old son and I were standing in front of the store chatting with a friend. I noted how cool the glasses were and told my husband we needed to check the place out when they opened. We both where glasses and loved the styles in the store front. I heart this place!! I stumbled upon them by accident over a year ago, as I don't often find myself in Noe Valley. I tried on a few pairs of Oliver Goldsmith sunglasses for fun but wasn't in the market to buy anything at the time... but I simply couldn't forget these sunglasses and I gradually developed a mild obsession with the Oliver Goldsmith brand. I finally went back a few months ago and bought a pair of Oliver Goldsmiths. And then I followed that up shortly with a new pair of glasses (Propo Design), and another pair of sunglasses (Cutler & Gross). Ok, if you're looking for mass luxury brands like Gucci, Dior and Fendi, this place is not for you. But if you want real high quality and premium luxury, you cannot go wrong here. Just hold them in your hands, and you can feel the difference. Try 'em on and you can see the difference. They fit great, and a good fit is often hard for me to find because I'm Asian, which basically means I have a small face and nose bridge. Also, these pieces are handcrafted in Japan and Italy, not churned out of a plant in China (as many of the mass luxury pieces actually are - despite what the stamps in them may claim).
