Tawil and his staff are a bunch of pretentious boobs. The doctor parades his little dog around by his side and brings him into the exam room. I though you run a optometry office, not a kennel. The front staff tried to push a years supply of contacts on me, and got extremely rude when I said I didn't want to purchase a whole year at this time. I accidentally broke my eye glass frame in a nearby friend's house today, had to get it fixed. Called Opt Optometric and spoke to Alex over the phone who said that I can drop by to see if they can get it fixed on site. I brought my glass in and Alex was quick to get it fixed! Be aware this store is not open daily, the front door is always locked, and calls go rarely returned. Every repair of what you purchase there has to be scheduled days in advance, and even then you may not get help. One pair of glasses legit fell apart and I had to plead to be seen that day, because the guy hemmed about being busy. When I did make it, turns out they're cutting up as staff and not actually all that busy. When it fell apart again, the staff reply was that I could go elsewhere to get my purchase at their store repaired. Fortunately Veo Optics down the street (which IS open daily and wants to help) was nice enough to fix it free. read more

I've been coming to OPT for a few years on and off, but what prompted this review was a really excellent appointment with Dr. Ohara. I used to travel and move enough that I would actually go to different optometrists pretty regularly, and my prescription would drift up and down a quarter (or even half) point, depending. This year I decided to grill Dr. Ohara on why that might be and if she could help me find the One True Prescription (and contact brand to match). She was game, and we had a very long and detailed appointment using different machines/tools to cross-check the prescription, at one point carrying some lenses outside to test reading real road signs, etc. She answered all my questions on why a prescription might drift, the benefits of erring high versus low, how much it really matters, what long term effects of a slight misdiagnosis might be, and more. I left with a sample set of contact styles, brands and corrections and a detailed test plan so I could compare them against each other and determine what really actually worked in daily life, and not just with the office chart. I think it was the best doctor's appointment I ever had. (Apologies to whoever came after me -- I'm pretty sure we ran way over.) read more

It was bittersweet having to say goodbye to this place, my doctor & the staff. I have already given this place 5 stars and my review remains positive and if I could give them a solid 10, I certainly would! So after letting them know I was moving away, they were able to put together my prescription promptly so I have it on hand and ready to share it with my new optometrist. I was also running low on contacts and they were able to ship them them out to me quickly and even with the prescription changed and I had to send back, the staff still managed to help me out quickly! Even though I had to go through different staff members throughout the 4 years, I had come to see Dr. Tawil and the other optometrist (most recent), I would still feel taken care of. TLDR; unhygienic, rude, and unprofessional Dr. Philip Tawil raised his voice to me leading to me walking out of my appointment and continued to yell at me on my way out. I recently had the misfortune of visiting Dr. Philip Tawil's practice, and I cannot emphasize enough how strongly I recommend avoiding this place at all costs. My encounter with Dr. Tawil was nothing short of a nightmare, characterized by unhygienic conditions, rude behavior, and an utter lack of professionalism. From the moment I stepped into the exam room, I noticed that it was far from clean. The phoropter, which is supposed to come into contact with patients' faces, was visibly dirty from the previous patient's makeup. Although I pointed this out to Dr. Tawil, he merely wiped it off without even offering an apology. I did not see the doctor once wash his hands as I've experienced most optometrists do before interacting with a patient's face/eyes. To make matters worse, there was a small dog present in the room, which raised serious concerns about sanitation in an optometry practice. The real horror show began when I expressed my desire to upgrade my contact lenses to a better quality brand. Dr. Tawil informed me that they didn't have the specific brand I wanted for astigmatism and recommended another one instead pushing upon me that ordering through OPT is cheaper than Costco. Curious about pricing, I tried to check if the recommended brand was available at Costco, as I had found their prices to be cheaper than OPT in the past. Instead of addressing my concerns or providing helpful information, Dr. Tawil rudely snapped at me to get off my phone. From that point on, Dr. Tawil's demeanor shifted dramatically. He became aggressive, barking orders at me and acting as if I had committed a grave offense. He even interrupted the examination to raise his voice and lecture me about using my phone. Despite my attempts to explain my intentions, he continued to shout, displaying a complete lack of respect and professionalism. Feeling utterly disrespected and uncomfortable, I made the decision to leave the appointment. To my astonishment, Dr. Tawil followed me out, continuing to yell at me in front of the staff and other patients, proclaiming that I would never be welcomed back. This level of unprofessionalism is beyond unacceptable and should never be tolerated in a healthcare setting. I cannot stress enough how important it is to steer clear of Dr. Philip Tawil's practice. Our health and well-being deserve to be entrusted to professionals who not only possess the necessary expertise but also treat patients with respect, courtesy, and empathy. I was trying to browse frames, however: [1] They don't let you enter the shop without an appointment - fine, fair enough [2] They don't even you book an appointment without taking down ALL your personal info - personally I think its a bit excessive and seems like a 'lock in' tactic to pressure you to make a purchase before you've even stepped into the shop. I have been going to Dr. Tawil for more than 15 years. 15 YEARS. It takes a lot for me to pen a review here on yelp. But when I'm lucky enough to find someone really special, I stick with them. Dr. Tawil, a real standout in eye care, is one of those special people. As I said earlier, I have been walking through the doors of Dr. Tawil's for over 15 years - the place where I have felt seen (literally and metaphorically) in ways that no other optometrist has managed. My journey began at his former location on Castro, my eyes red and experiencing extreme discomfort, tormented by the unwelcome sensation of my contact lenses setting my world ablaze. Before Dr. Tawil, I had visits to 2 other optometrists that year - one conveniently labeled me an unsuitable candidate for contact lenses due to my aversion to the popular-at-the-time Acuvue ones, while another mis-diagnosed me with glaucoma. Disoriented, confused and disheartened, I sought solace in Dr. Tawil's expertise. From our very first encounter, I felt a sense of respite. Sensing my concern with the recent history of past optometrist visits, Dr. Tawil asked to start afresh - with a complete re-examination - initiating a huge sigh of relief from me. And so began our journey, a testament to his unwavering dedication and his refusal to let my fussy eyes compromise with even the slightest discomfort. I've been going here a few years but today that comes to an end! I asked for this office to switch the recommended contact lens brand for me (an option between biofinity and ultra) which they have offered to me EVERY SINGLE TIME I have gone before. This suggests that they are truly interchangeable brands for me. I asked to switch my prescription and they refused, stating I would have to come in for an appointment because it's a different 'medical device' AND that my prescription was expired. My prescription wasn't (and still isn't) expired and I have a receipt to prove it. Phil Tawil lied about my prescription being expired to force me to come back for another visit. My partner uses the lenses I prefer so I knew they would work better for me, but this office not only refused to update the prescription and lie about the expiration date, they were rude via email AND YELLED at my husband just now over the phone! I have never encountered such shockingly bad customer service in my life. They said we should take our business elsewhere so that's exactly what we're doing and I suggest you do the same. Oh, and the $600 pair of Allied Metalworks X Barton Perreira glasses I bought from them are super cute but the paint immediately started peeling when I got them. I was able to return one pair and get a replacement, but the exact same thing happened to the second pair! I'll say their frames selection is great, but I cannot stand by the quality, unfortunately. And I certainly can't stand being lied to and yelled at by the folks over there. You deserve better - take your business elsewhere to someone who will appreciate it. read more

I first visited Dr Tawill and his practice when another optometrist misdiagnosed my astigmatism, and gave me the wrong prescription for glasses, leading to terrible headaches. Dr Tawill understood the issue within moments of looking at my eyes, fixed the prescription and he and Todd helped me pick out the perfect frames. The frames they sell aren't cheap, but they are excellent quality. I've never regretted a purchase there. He has also been a calm, reassuring presence in my longer term eye health, as he has continued to monitor a secondary condition and has helped minimize my dry eye issues. The practice has a wonderful, informal feel, making you think you just walked in to visit a friend. Between Dr Tawill, Todd, and a wonderfully cute pup, you are immediately put at ease. I've recommended Dr Phil to at least 3 friends, all of whom were delighted with their experiences (and eyewear choices). read more

Dr.Tawil is the bomb. I'm an optician. I used to work with Dr. Tawil. He is a master of the lost art of refraction. Seriously, optometrists spend so much time learning to be mini-ophthalmologists these days at the expense of honing their refraction chops. When I've made someone's glasses twice with two different prescriptions and they still can't see, I ask that they travel from the East Bay to SF to get a clean refraction. He's also compassionate. Hopefully you'll never end up with medical eye problems to see the best of his clinical skills, but you can trust me on this one. I've watched him come on his day off multiple times to track a patient's progress. Watched him go to bat so patients could be seen immediately at fully booked ophthalmology practices. I've probably worked alongside 50 ODs in the Bay, and he is one of the two best in the city (they're equally excellent, can't rank 'em). Bonus if you like the best high end eyewear from small boutique companies. OPT has 'em. Todd won't steer you wrong in that department. P.s. He has no idea I'm writing this. No one put me up to it. The kind team is transparent, open to questions, and easy to work with. I switched insurance and had to find a new optometrist and am glad this was a one-and-done choice! Would highly recommend if you have great insurance and want an attentive, dedicated eye care team. My doctor was open to answering all of my questions, from glasses and contacts to Lasik surgery recommendations. I went with OPT because they were convenient and had an appointment available within a few days; no waiting for weeks to be seen. The downside is that they're very pricy (hence the no-joke Yelp $$$ rating). For example, when I went to get more contacts, they wanted to charge me $100 more for 6mo of contacts than what a popular (chain store) competitor charges for the same brand. Supporting small businesses is extremely important and I usually don't mind paying a bit more to help them out. That said, I find OPT's rates to be exploitative -- especially for something like renewing contacts, which takes less than 5 minutes to figure out how to do as a patient. read more

I second all the other great things written in the other reivews - easy, friendly, helpful, amazing service! Great hours, including weekends and evenings. Easy to get to location, with pretty available street parking or not far from BART, and nearby cookies are a bonus. Tea! Beautiful decor and a space that is actually nice to spend time in. Best of all - amazing help selecting frames that look fantastic! I am terrible at this part but Dr. T made it fun and great, and was really patient - I think I was still there a little after closing time, but did not feel rushed at all. They have a really nice selection of high quality, awesome frames. I accidentally paid with normal money and Todd was really helpful and nice about refunding it and then charging my FSA account instead. Didn't even make me feel bad about all the extra work. So kind! I bought a pair of glasses less then a year ago from OPT. Something strange happened with them - all of the joints started turning green, even the metal inside of the acrylic frame began turning green. Mind you, this is a 600$ pair of glasses. They shouldn't be peeling/turning green or black at all. We (my mother, who's also an OPT customer, and I) went to see if OPT could clean them or help us with the 1 yr warranty from the manufacturer. Got a big fat "there's nothing we can do" at first. I get that they were busy, but they acted as if we were a bother. After a bit of pressing they agreed to reach out to the manufacturer and see what could be done. Never heard back, and it's looking like I won't. I've loved these glasses, but I'm really disappointed I couldn't even wear them a year. I'm even more disappointed in the service OPT provided in this. If only the representatives had acted like they wanted to help, I would have felt a little better. That's way too much money to spend on glasses with 0 service or support. read more

After not purchasing contacts from the store after my routine contact lens exam, I was told "this practice is not a good fit for you" and not to come back by the owner. For a hefty $1000 price tag for a year supply, I wanted to think on my purchase before buying. After the reaction from the owner, I now question whether the contacts I was recommended are even better for my health, as the doctor claimed. Unethical Business. Kinda really disappointed. I let it pass the first time, but now that we are nearing over $2500 and still bad business practices, I feel I should write something. The oddest part of this is that my first appointment here last year we had talked about how people leave Yelp bad reviews. Anyways, I wouldn't recommend them. My first appt. was normal. Last one I went in 2 months ago, I spent almost $700 with insurance. I also had $800 frames I had brought in. Went to pick them up; the $800 glasses they put in they can't adjust as they aren't familiar with them. So after lenses, $1k glasses unusable in a kitchen drawer. If you aren't familiar with them, don't fill them. I'm thinking of Contact Lenses now. Call. "We would need to see you again. The only time we will check for contact lenses is if you specifically say. So you'll have to pay for another appointment since you just saw us 2 months ago and insurance doesn't cover it". It's not the money aspect at all, I can more than pay for it. It's the point. This is bad business practices for a bad business then only after $$$. I'll pay 2X elsewhere if I have to than let a place gouge customers for money. I get it's the BayArea/Silicon Valley...but be ethical! read more

The place tells me at 3:10 that they can see me at 315. I tell them it will take me 15 minutes to get there . They agree. When i arrive in 15 minutes the receptionist tells me they have given my appointment away because I was late. I was not. I was there exactly at the agreed upon time-15 minutes after I hung up the phone.I ask if I can buy an emergency pair of lenses to get me through the days until my rescheduled appointment. I know my Rx. "No, because you have to have a Rx issued within the past year ". Which is what I was there to do...but apparently not. So there I am, no appointment, no exam, no lenses. I love having my time wasted and then being told I was late because the clown working there doesn't understand the concept of time. Don't tell clients u can see them when u can't. You just overbooked your way out of a customer. read more

He diagnosed me with an issue I have likely had my entire life but was previously missed. As I type this review, I'm staring at my phone wearing my eyeglasses that for the past year had loose, wobbly arms and constantly slid down my nose. After a visit to OPT Optometric today, my frames are like new. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, all visits to the office must be scheduled in advance to limit the number of people inside. Setting up the appointment was a breeze. I arrived at the scheduled time and the expert and friendly staff quickly went to work on adjusting/tightening and cleaning two pairs of Moscot eyeglasses. I was never asked if I purchased my frames at OPT Optometric. The fact that I ordered my frames online directly from Moscot NY did not matter. Fifteen minutes later, I had two pairs of 'like new' frames. I will never waste time trying to get a tune-up for my glasses at the Costco Optical department ever again! I'll echo what Champagne T. mentions below --my review isn't meant to encourage anyone to bring their Warby Parker frames to OPT for an adjustment. The fact that the staff was so accommodating prompted me to buy a pair of Moscot sunglasses, which I was happy to do to support a local business. Highly recommend OPT Optical if you're on the hunt for eyeglasses or new shades. The office has a funky / whimsical decor (vintage fondue pots are repurposed for indoor plants!) and OPT offers a great selection of designer frames in different shapes and styles. I have just purchased my first pair of glasses recently, not only did Todd help me choose the properly proportioned frames for my face he helped me fill out the insurance form and get it in before the deadline - full service shopping! I'm always so excited to get new glasses, but the same thing happens every time - they look great when I'm shopping for them but as soon as reality hits and I actually get them they are always heavy and look like coke bottles - the lab they use is fantastic and not only is the script right on they are so thin and with the arms being metal feel so airy that by the end of the day I hardly noticed the weight. Having worn glasses since 2nd grade I've been through quite a few specs and really appreciate the quality of an excellent product. The screw from my beloved Chanel sunglasses fell out a while back. Of course, like all things Chanel the screw was too fancy to be found at a drug store. I stopped by Opt yesterday to see if they could help. They told me they'd be ready first thing today at 11am. I came back shortly after they opened- or so I thought- but it turned out they open later on Wednesdays. Well guess what? The nice man working there helped me anyway and they didn't even charge me for the repair. I love this eye doctor. I originally came here as a recommendation of a friend who worked there. It's ideal for me because I work up the street but the location is an easy 5 minute walk from Bart. They have EXTENSIVE eye glass options. Every frame, color, and material you can image. The doctors are both super friendly and conversational and I never feel like I'm being rushed through. When you're done with your appointment they sit you down and explain what you owe (as well as why) and break down everything regarding what's available to your on your insurance (they do take VSP) and then give you a total to pay (and they take CC so get those points). I have never had a problem getting an appointment and the handful of m&ms on the way out is always a nice touch. read more

If you're looking for a good selection of frames, OPT has a pretty good selection that includes some indie labels not owned by Luxotica (which is always a brand worth avoiding). Unfortunately, I had a terrible time here. I visited the optometrist 3 times, never actually getting an accurate prescription. I had to fly down to my ophthalmologist in LA just to get something usable. When I showed him the various prescriptions given, he just laughed and said I could have gotten those lenses from a grocery store. One dilation and a few tests later, I had a prescription that .. shockingly ... actually helps me see better, something *three* damn visits to OPT couldn't accomplish. BTW, when OPT messes up and creates unusable lenses for a prescription they messed up on, they will not refund the cost of the frames nor will they really be able to do much with the lenses. You can get lenses that make you dizzy AF and they'll just shrug that wasted $500 away, so go there at your own risk. Similarly, if you use them for your prescription, they'll proactively force an expiration so you won't be able to reorder contacts or get a new pair of glasses later. Screw that crappy level of lock-in, just avoid OPT. read more

I was recommended to OPT by a friend when I moved to SF five years ago and since then I've had nothing but first class service from Dr Tawil & Todd. My first pair of SALT progressives were truly "Game Changers", very stylish as well as perfectly fitted.
