Pacific Catch just opened, and I came on their 3rd day of business. The ambience is comfy and intimate with a relaxed feel. Hawaiian reggae music is playing and all the staff were so welcoming and helpful. I ordered the ceviche and calamari for appetizers. The calamari was crispy and the ceviche was fresh. I ordered a shrimp plate for lunch that came with rice and zucchini. I came with a party of 12 and we were all so impressed with the taste, presentation, and portion size of our plates. Have been wanting to try this place out ever since Brea Mall expanded. It was expectedly busy as it was a Friday evening but we were served quickly. No complaints about the service, our waiter was great! I had a blood orange sparkling lemonade which was super yummy . We ordered 3 smaller plates to share. The kimchi fried rice was good but nothing special. The poke bowl was also good, and tasted fresh. The brussel sprouts were tasty as well. Round 2 at pacific catch was just as good as the last time! Came here to celebrate my birthday, which included a free dessert at the end of the meal free of charge! (We opted for the brownie sundae). We were fortunate to attend a pre-opening practice run at this gorgeous brand new location. Even with training wheels, we had a terrific meal and experience! The wife had the barramundi and I had the three tacos (steak, sea bass, fried cod) and it was all delicious! The portions here are beyond generous for the price. We were checked on frequently but not intrusively, with constant coaching from the managers to fine tune the staff's game. It's very apparent that the management cares deeply about guest experience. I'm very conflicted about this Pacific Catch. I'm more than familiar with the chain, which started in San Francisco in the 2000s and at whose Inner Sunset location I've dined dozens and dozens and dozens of times, from the time my nephew was a two-year-old until now. (He's twenty). I've also been to the Marina location, and I spied one of the other Orange County locations a few years back. I brought my parents here last week to widen their going-out options, since they're also familiar with it from San Francisco. I'll start with the good, because there's a great deal of it. The building is brand new, and they did an excellent job making it chic, inviting, spacious, cozy, and efficient. We chose to sit outside just because the weather was so nice, and even out there, you can tell the design details were really well thought out. Although you're outside, you're kind of inside, as you're under the roof, and there's a half-wall between you and the sidewalk. The bar is also designed interestingly; you can sit/eat at it either inside or outside, and the outside countertop is set lower so that you needn't sit on a high stool. The men's bathroom is probably the nicest public bathroom I've seen outside of a swanky hotel. Again, designed really well, and it was very clean. The toilet stalls have actual wooden cabinets in them, where they store cleaning products. The food is Pacific Catch food. That means it's good, but slightly overpriced for what you get, especially if you're subbing tofu for some other protein. My parents both enjoyed their dinners immensely. The service was very good except for the attitude of one particular server, who didn't end up having our table. When we arrived, we didn't know whether we wanted to sit inside or outside, so my mom asked the host whether we could walk into the patio to see what it was like outside. (You can only access the patio by walking into the restaurant and then outside.) He told us to go right ahead and if we found a table we liked to sit down, and he would be right out with our menus; otherwise, we were to return to him. We went outside, and my mom chose a booth. We sat down, and I could see that our host was now seating another party inside. A server walked up to us and told us, in a snarky way, that in the future we needed to wait to be seated. My mom was about to start explaining the situation to her when our host arrived with our menus, and the server walked away looking embarrassed. This all sounds like a four- or five-star experience, right? Well, yes. Except for the parking. Here's my dilemma. This review should be a solid four stars. But this restaurant is on Brea Mall's property, although it's not inside the mall. When the mall tore down whatever wing no longer had an anchor tenant, they chose to rebuild the wing smaller and to place some unattached buildings in the parking lot. Pacific Catch is in one of these buildings, but because of the layout of the mall, there's very little parking on the road that encircles the mostly restaurant buildings. Instead, you have to park in the vaguely nearby parking structure that we all know and hate as the overflow parking for Nordstrom. And even worse, they're currently doing construction on that structure, so you can't even get to certain parts of it (including entire floors?) now. So you have to drive around looking for parking, and even if you're lucky enough to snag a spot as close to Pacific Catch as possible, it's not actually that close. I normally don't make parking much of a consideration when I'm reviewing restaurants, especially in San Francisco, but this is suburban Southern California, and Pacific Catch chose to be the first tenant of this particular location. It's not a fancy enough place for valet parking, but it's also expensive enough that it shouldn't be this much of a hassle to get to its front door from where you're forced to fight for parking. Brea Mall had and has plenty of parking in other areas. They chose to shoehorn these restaurant buildings into this "new" corner of the mall. read more

Honestly, one of the worst meals I've ever had. Our server was nice that is the only positive. The restaurant was busy but not overly so at lunch on a Saturday. The restaurant had a slightly off putting smell in the section we sat in, like they cleaned the floor with a dirty mop. I tried to overlook that as everything else seemed clean and in place. I ordered the poke bowl. I was with my parents and my mom got the barramundi with mashed potatoes and green beans. My dad got the miso cod. The ahi in my bowl was inedible, tough to chew. I took a few bites thinking it might get better... it didn't. My mom's barramundi had a noticeable red vein/blood in it that i noticed. We told our server and she offered to exchange it out. So my mom ordered the cod instead. The cod was mid, and I think after the disappointment with our food it just made everything very unappealing. They offered a complimentary dessert, which was appreciated but not the issue. What shocked me even more was the bill! They removed the barramundi from the bill which was $29, but proceeded to charge $34 for the cod they offered to exchange it for. Best practice in my experience would be to comp that dish. I didn't complain about the poke although it was obvious that I barely touched it. It was a very disappointing experience all around. It was no fault of the server, just bad policy I suppose and a very disappointing food experience. read more

I don't like to leave bad restaurants reviews especially for new restaurants because I know how hard they've worked to open but I feel very sad to say that we were pretty disappointed with the food. It's a beautiful restaurant that gives vacation vibes and I was so excited to try it, but the food we ordered was not to our liking at all. The biggest disappointment were the fish and chips. You can choose between 2 or 3 pieces of fish so we asked our server if the portions were big and she said yes, so we ordered the 2 piece meal. When the plate arrived we were left staring at the plate surprised at how small the fish pieces were. It was like one piece cut into two. They were about the length of a French fry. Besides that, they appeared as if they had been sitting under the light (along with the fries) for a longer period of time then they should have. We were left feeling very unfulfilled after this meal. This is called Pacific Catch. It's supposed to be great seafood. That's why we were very perplexed. We also ordered the steak tacos with salad. The salad was interesting and tasted good. The steak tacos were filled with cold slaw and shredded carrots giving it a sweet flavor that I wasn't expecting. So first of all I just want to say If i could give this restaurant 10 stars i would. This has to be one of the best restaurants I've been to hands down. I've been to a lot of places and I have tried a lot of cuisine. This place takes the cake. To start with the service was great. Sean, our server, was amazing. So attentive and quick with everything. The ambiance was perfect. We sat on the outer ring of tables that has a view of the outside. I must say it was stellar. The food flavors were so complex and amazing. I can't emphasize this enough. Every dish i tried from the sea bass which is amazingly priced at $29, to the al pastor shrimp and kimchi fried rice, the salmon chowder, the ceviche, EVERYTHING was absolutely out of this world. I don't leave reviews with this level of praise often. I generally will only review a place if its deserving 5 stars for its performance but this place is beyond 5 stars. Come in asap. We booked a party of 12 for happy hour and time it so we can order off the happy hour menu for appetizers and the rest on the reg menu that the girl on the phone told us to do. We ask for the Gm and he was willing to move us to the other side and make it right .
