    Stepping out on the beach
    Laura G.

I want to give this place full stars for its awesome qualities but there are a few things that need to be noted. I will start with those. After hours check in ( I am assuming it's only after hours), is done through a virtual assistant screen in the lobby. The virtual assistant was quick to respond, but when the key cards issued by the machine didn't work two times she had to summon an actual manager who was a ten minute drive away. The whole process took about twenty five minutes after the room had been booked and paid for on line hours before. I did not enjoy that. The a/c unit is loud. It works well and I was happy that I could adjust it and ultimately turn it off, but it ain't quiet. The room has been (spotlessly) cleaned with one of those very strong smelling fabuloso type cleaners. If you are sensitive to those kinds of smells, as I am, it's a bummer. On to the good. The room has clearly just been updated and it's simple clean and charming. The bed and bedding were quite comfortable. The location is absolutely unbeatable. From my less expensive pool view king it's a few steps to the beach. The beach was abandoned early morning and it was just what I needed. That made all the other things not important. I will adjust accordingly and stay here again whenever I can

Second stay here during summer season...front desk, housekeepers and guests couldn't be nicer. I had hoped for a second floor, however, due to a full house, I got a first floor oceanfront. That being said, I still had an amazing ocean view! #3stepstothebeach Unlike many first floor spots, no dunes here to block a view. Therefore, I ended up happier than even a second floor might have made me! Sunrise right from the bedroom window! And no doubt these rooms are cleaner than any chain motel on the beach! Rooms are large, have enough accoutrements in the kitchen to stay in any night. Nice to rent from a family business that is excellent at customer service.

Hello. I am wondering if it is safe. I see that it is good for the price and excellent for the beach access. But I'm thinking about security. Will it be safe for a female to be here?

I have not been there long enough to answer your question intelligently, I can tell you I will not stay there again.

Great location too! A couple things worth mentioning though. Our room was very damp. And not just a little humid (we lived in FL for 15 years so we understand humidity), but like our clothes felt wet when we put them on and paper gift bags were soft. We actually turned off the air and opened the slider to air the room out a couple times. If I had to take a stab in the dark, there's likely a serious mold issue behind the walls. There was mold growing on the AC unit. Another thing about the area in general (not just the hotel)...flies. Be prepared to have them tag along with you EVERYWHERE. They were in every restaurant we went to, by the pool, at the beach, in the gym, in every store. It was the most bizarre thing. Just everywhere. Also, I didn't realize how dog friendly this hotel was. We have two dogs and love them, but our room clearly had a dog in it previously with signs of hair on the AC unit and in the carpet. I wish we'd have brought our own pillows as the ones in our room were down pillows and even with 2 of them, they still fall flat. Overall, the location, price, service, and amenities were totally fine but those things like the room being super damp, the flies, and pet hair were just little nuisances that I think people should be aware of.

First and foremost, the Kitty Hawk Pier made planning our wedding from a state away incredibly easy. Every single coordinator we worked with was friendly, accommodating, and genuinely invested in making our day special. Emma, especially, answered what was probably 2,839,028,392 emails from me and my million questions with patience, professionalism, and kindness every single time. From the very beginning, the entire team made us feel like our wedding was special and unique--not like they simply do this every weekend. The level of attention, care, and personal service they provided to make our wedding perfect was truly incredible and so appreciated. The food was AMAZING! We had several food allergies among our guests, including me--the bride--being allergic to gluten. The team went above and beyond to make sure everyone could eat safely while still enjoying an incredible meal. We had the mahi and beef, and our guests could not stop talking about how delicious everything was. We were also so impressed by how quickly and efficiently everyone was served. Every single employee we encountered was incredibly helpful, kind, and attentive. From the bartenders and servers to the managers, everyone went out of their way to make sure we and our guests had the best possible experience--and we truly did. Having the hotel right on site was an absolute dream. The hotel staff were incredibly accommodating, and our guests were very happy with their rooms, the restaurant, and the pool and beach access. The gym even had Peloton bikes! The entire setup made the weekend so convenient and enjoyable for everyone. I truly cannot stress enough what a dream venue this is for anyone who wants to get married at the beach. Being able to have all of our guests check in and be done traveling, have the most beautiful beach ceremony, and then immediately move inside to air conditioning while still enjoying the incredible views over the water was absolutely perfect. Having access to the pier for photos was also such a special bonus and gave us so many beautiful memories and pictures. The Kitty Hawk Pier truly gave us the beach wedding of our dreams. From the planning process to the food, staff, accommodations, location, and every little detail in between, everything was exceptional. We will be forever grateful to the entire team for helping us create the most perfect wedding weekend and would wholeheartedly recommend the Kitty Hawk Pier to anyone looking for a beautiful, stress-free, and truly unforgettable wedding venue!

First, some of the issues I have: The room layout puts one bed very close to the air conditioner and because they have the old-fashioned hotel style AC units, that leaves at least one person getting directly blasted with cold air all night. Using pool towel clips to put a towel over one side of the vent did help but reduced the efficacy of the AC and made the room warmer for everyone else. Breakfast is nice (and free) but the setup of it seems to be done as if this is a business hotel and not a beach front hotel. The cereal choices were all boring adult cereals, the bread for toast was VERY whole grain (as in it had pieces of grains in it), and the only milk they had was white milk (for example). Adding a small amount of more kid-friendly breakfast elements would go a long way. The outdoor pool is sheltered from the wind by the sand bank and gets really hot in the sun, a lightweight shade over the whole (or part of) the deck would probably be a welcomed addition by most people. As for what's great about this place: The location includes a beachfront pool + small snack shack with beach access which is directly across the road from the hotel itself. This gives the best of both worlds with beachfront access as well as having better parking and more room on the hotel property. On non-weekends the price is super affordable for a beachfront Marriott property. Not to mention the only Marriott property on the Outer Banks. It's very close to great food options, many walkable. Stuff for both adults and kids is easy to access. It's also not far to many interesting sightseeing or cultural things to see. All-in-all, I would love to see some minor changes but even with some flaws this is definitely a 5 star option.

Side of the refrigerator has good amount of rust. The icemaker didn't work. The showers had decent water pressure and they have nice soap products. The food at the restaurant was good. The crabcake was good portion and tasty and the vegetable medley had excellent flavor. I was overcharged when I arrived for what my confirmation said. Hopefully that has been straightened out with my bill when I check out. There was an issue with the elevator the one morning as the employee said it wasn't working. This other lady who looked like a manager, was asking other guests about the elevator. When I told her that is your employee with the supply cart and he's been standing at the elevator and it's not working. She's responded to me saying "I don't know him. I don't know what's going on. I don't know about another elevator. I'm new here. This is my first day." Really? You start your first day on Easter Sunday and you had no training? There is another elevator, but apparently that's been out of order for many months. Thankfully, the employee with the supply cart was able to get the elevator back working quickly Lots of available parking in the open lot We consider staying again, but likely will try another place

We originally had a suite the week before but decided to cancel because of Tropical Storm Isiais. The traffic noise wasn't as bad as you'd think. The only noise we'd hear were the footsteps above us every now and again. Nothing from the neighbors to our left or right. The sun shown into the room for 7-8 hours until sunset so that was a bit annoying but not the hotel's fault. Due to COVID-19, there was no housekeeping so you're on your own for trash and to go to the front desk for linens. The only true annoying aspect of this is the sand we brought in each day. It got to the point in which our feet got really dirty each night just walking around the room. Again not the hotel's fault, just a circumstance we couldn't escape. Room amenities included the double beds that were very comfortable. To round out the room we had a TV, dresser drawer, microwave, mini fridge, desk with chair, additional chair, safe, and a place to hang a few shirts. The water pressure in the shower was great and the bathroom big enough. The hotel isn't far from the beach at all. A short stroll on the boardwalk and then over the dunes and you're there. 30 seconds maximum. I felt safe enough from a COVID aspect. No one really in your face or obnoxious. I didn't go into the lobby for anything nor did I use the pool so I can't speak to that. It would've been great to have had that suite we originally had because we needed the space with the kids but that's on us. Oh well!

When I arrived, there was no shampoo or soap in the room. I then noticed a cockroach crawling up the curtains, which I took a photo of. I also found multiple different types of hair around the room, which made it seem like the room had not been thoroughly cleaned before I checked in. The following day, I called around 1 p.m. and asked if housekeeping could clean the room. I was told that 1 p.m. was already "too late" to request cleaning, which I found pretty ridiculous. After some back and forth, they said they would make an exception and send someone. Nobody ever showed up to clean the room. The toilet also didn't flush properly, which I documented as well. I can overlook an older property, basic rooms, and limited amenities when the price reflects that. What I can't overlook are basic cleanliness issues, a cockroach in the room, plumbing that doesn't work properly, and housekeeping saying they'll come and then never showing up. Do you really need someone to make or turn down your bed for you daily while you're on vacation?!? Do you really need fresh towels every single day? I've been coming to this same hotel for years and truly the only difference I see now compared to the past is the long term residents.
