Location is good. Rooms are outdated. Happy hour and cookies at 8 pm are popular but they always run out in first 10-15 minutes. Clean towels everyday. Breakfast is mediocre at best but is free (included in rate). Indoor pool and jacuzzi are dirty. Jacuzzi makes foam when turned on. Issue with next room allowing small children to run up and down hallways until 10 pm at night. Screaming and kicking doors. Management won't do anything since it's before "quiet time". read more

I stayed at Surf Side Hotel during the week before Memorial Day. The room was clean. Housekeeping staff did a good job and they were friendly. The front desk staff was friendly too. I informed the front desk that the tub was slow to drain. The maintenance staff was very responsive and also friendly. As it turns out, there wasn't a problem with the drain. I just didn't turn the switch all the way down. The beach is easy to get to. The beach access is on the side of the hotel so that was good. Leave a good tip for the housekeeping people. read more

If you make a reservation through a third party online to get a better price, they punish you. We are 80 years old and they put us on the 3rd floor of a building with no elevator. When we returned to the front desk and told them there was no way we could carry our luggage up 3 flights of stairs, they gave us a room in the main building, right next to the elevator, which was so loud, that we were annoyed all night. It woke me up at 5:00 AM. When we asked to be changed, they said they would 'upgrade' us for $100.00!!! The front desk agents were very unfriendly and even nasty. even though breakfast is what I call 'plasti-food', the woman who worked there was so nice and helpful to everyone, young and old...a bright star in the darkness of that place. They fail to post a picture of their adjacent building on their website. These are rooms with no elevator access and you have to walk through an underground garage to get to the stairway. No mention of this when checking in. They act like you just need to go to the other building and walk down a hallway. They could have asked if we need assistance with our luggage. This hotel is a bit dated, the bathrooms in the rooms are TINY, they need more hooks in the room to hang swimsuits and towels, and the one elevator can be a bit slow, but they are going the extra mile to make things wonderful for their guests! They provide beach chairs, beach towels and a giant ice machine where you can prep your coolers for the beach! FREE parking, wine and cheese at 5 and cookies at 8pm- plus their free breakfast is wayyyy better than most that just serve cereal and muffins. The Surf Side is a very good place to stay in Nags Head. It is located right on the beach. Beach view rooms do cost more, but side view rooms still give a view up and down the beach. We found the hotel clean and comfortable. Our room, with two kings beds, was large and had a balcony looking out on the beach. Amenities included a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker and lots of electrical outlets. There is free WiFi. Breakfast is included. Served in the Breakfast Room from 8 to 10 it includes coffee, tea, juices, choice of breakfast sandwiches or breakfast quiche, fresh muffins, breads, bagels, cereals and a waffle maker. Popcorn is in the lobby. There is a happy hour there at 5 with wine and cheese. The hotel has an outdoor pool and beach access is adjacent to it. The hotel will supply beach chairs and beach towels. We visited here back in October and enjoyed our stay. The hotel room was very clean and stocked. The indoor pool and jacuzzi were also a nice bonus. As was all the complimentary food ( free breakfast, free cookies, wine, etc.). The view of course was amazing! I loved that we could walk a short distant to ocean and also local shops/restaurants. We will definitely be back next year. We are debating on taking our dogs as it is very dog friendly in this area! read more

The hotel itself looks a little old on the outside. Once you go inside you kind of get the same vibe until you really take a look around. The staff was friendly. We got to our room and everything was clean. The bathroom door with peeling at the bottom, but not a huge issue at all. The furniture was a little old looking. There is a smart TV so Netflix, Hulu and other apps can be used. They have an amazing hot breakfast every morning that comes with the cost of the hotel. The beach is literally right behind the hotel and there's a back entrance that leads to the pool and the beach. The hotel offers towels as well. There is hot coffee, hot water, and ice cold water available 24/7. There's a washer and a dryer on site. A few ice machines throughout the hotel. And there's an amazing terrace on the second floor that you can sit on. Our stay was amazing. read more

Great stay! Staff was excellent! Everyone was friendly, happy and were will to help out in anyway they could. They offered both a wine social and cookies in the evening. Pool towels were fluffy and clean. Also had a hot continental breakfast every morning which had staff there to serve you. The cleaning crew were super!! I do think that the outdoor shower/ foot washing area could of been kept cleaner. When cleaning your feet off it was so sandy that it defeated its purpose. I was looking for a hotel in the outer banks, I found SurfSide. When I arrived I asked if there was any upgrades available. They said no. What I didn't realize is my room was right next to a very noisy elevator. My business partner and I made a complaint to management about the noise and much to my surprise their response was retaliation. They called the room and said there was complaints about noise. We questioned why they wouldn't have knock on the door? The next morning on check out we asked management to come check the room for any incidentals because we figured, they were so corrupt to accuse two 60 year old women of being loud etc, that they would have no problem putting fake incidentals on our bill. SSH is a wonderful place to stay if you want to be close to the water. While most of the rooms have ocean views best to book oceanfront rooms for direct and unobstructed views (the room type descriptions on the hotel's website are very specific and accurate with realistic photos). There are two buildings, main one with elevator, and the smaller south building without. We stayed in two different 3rd floor rooms in the south building (due to not being able to have consecutive nights in the same room type - they were quite busy in October). First one was a deluxe oceanfront king, second a deluxe oceanfront efficiency. Both nice and spacious rooms, clean, soothing white/light blue colors, comfy bed, with an amazing view of the beach. If you plan on spending any mount of time sitting on the balcony to enjoy the view these are great rooms to have. Note that the king room balcony is bigger than the efficiency's, and both have high chairs instead of rocking chairs like most in the main building. But the efficiency also has a fun jacuzzi tub right by the window next to the balcony. Parking is plentiful and spacious. Good public areas - seating in lobby, covered outdoor patio next to the breakfast room, lounge chairs by the pool (although pool not big enough for laps and unheated - south building also has a smaller indoor pool and hot tub), and a wooden deck area with benches next to the walkway to the beach. The hotel however doesn't provide any beach chairs or umbrellas. The free breakfast is very good - hot dishes including baked eggs, biscuits, home fries, corn beef hash, and apple or peach cobbler. Only thing is there's no variation from day to day (only change was apple to peach cobbler) so if you stay more than one or two days it could get a bit boring. They also have all day self service coffee/tea in the lobby area which was convenient (although there is also coffee maker and microwave in room). The social hour in the afternoon is a bit lacking in comparison, with only trail mix as snacks. Excellent service with friendly staff. We had to rebook our stay at the last minute and they were extremely helpful in working things out for us and changing from one room to the other also worked out seamlessly. read more

We recently stayed at Surf Side Hotel, in one of the fully furnished condos. Talk about breathtaking views!! Every room had a view! The rooms were spacious and spotless, with great décor and crisp bed sheets making our stay very comfortable. The breakfast buffet was delicious, with a huge variety of options! This was only topped by the evening happy hour and an in which Surfside provided and fresh baked cookies which were a refreshing treat after being in the sun and sand all day! Surfside's standards for their hotel employees show well trained with ethical and renowned world-class standards to serve their guests innovatively and consciously with customer satisfaction as their priority. The staff continuously went above and beyond to help make our stay enjoyable. One example of this is that they were extremely accommodating and allowed us to check in early giving us access to all the amenities. This was a big plus! Surf Side Hotel will definitely be seeing me and my family again, and I highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting the Outer Banks area. read more

This hotel was just amazing! They called us while we were on our way to let us know that an oceanfront room was available and we could check in as soon as we got there! Of course we had to pay the difference of the cost but it was so worth it. We had an oceanfront room on the 1st floor and the views were breathtaking. I mean you're literally on the beach. The check in process was very easy and Teresa at the front desk was so friendly and helpful. She let us know that we made it in time for their complimentary breakfast. The room was very spacious and had two queen beds and a couch with a pull out bed. The bathroom was clean and well stocked with toiletries and towels. I love that they had a pretty big fridge, a great balcony and AC THAT KEPT THE ROOM FROZEN! The beach access is through the pool and is a private entrance. There is a great deck to sit and watch the sunrise or sit on the sun deck on the 1st floor to watch the sunset. The complimentary breakfast is actually very good. People this is free breakfast to keep you full until you spend money on lunch. Take the free pancakes, waffles, eggs, bagels, cereal, quiche and biscuits and call it a day. They also have coffee, water (w/ lemon and orange fancy!) and juices. The quiche and breakfast potatoes were very good and I ate them the both days I was there. I highly recommend this hotel for the views and value. You can't beat eating breakfast in your room while listening to the crash of the waves, or sitting on the balcony (which has walls on each side so you don't have to see your neighbors) and watching the sunrise with a loved one. The only cons were that we were told the lights on the balcony weren't turned on at night because they attracted bugs. Made sense. Yet they were turned on the next night. Then the door to the sundeck was locked and the employee didn't seem to know what was wrong and told us maintenance would come up. By the time that happened, the sun had already set. I also didn't care for the water from the AC units above spraying us every few minutes. read more

My husband and I have stayed here a couple of times and we booked a couple of reservations this year for a few days in September and a few days in October as we are building a home. Due to medical reasons I cancelled the one for September and was waiting hoping we could make the October one. No problem they refunded me everything but the $25 as promised for september. . Then I called back to cancel the October one after I realized we still wouldn't be able to make the trip and they didn't bother to remove it. So when it was time for the reservation I got a phone call asking where we were. I explained I had already canceled it and she took a message and I never heard anymore. So I proceeded to call three more times when I didn't get my refund with a promise each time I would get a call back. Still Nothing. Then I sent an email, waited and called back a few days later and got the front desk supervisor . Who told me she could not find the email and asked me to forward it again. Which I did while she was on the phone. Even after asking me to do that, She told me there wasn't anything she could do and accused me of possibly forgetting to call. Now mind you this is the same place that didn't return a single phone call and lost my email. They are accusing me of not canceling my reservation. Then told me she would check again with whoever was her superior and call me back. I am still waiting and it's been over a week. I wasn't going to do a review but after wasting my time calling this place and them disregarding every single call I made by not responding at all I feel they don't deserve the public's business. It's rude and not how you run a business. I even asked if I could have a credit for a future visit which would of have them business when I returned and they still said no. We stayed as a family of 5 for 4 nights here. I asked twice for our room to be vacuumed and they said they only do that for people staying 7 days or longer. I asked for new bedding once, they said no. Extra towels? No. Basically, you get what is in the room when you check in and NO extras or cleanings because of covid. 300 a night is EXTREMELY high to pay when you are picking the sand out of your sheets and bathroom towels. Breakfast and wine are apparently not affected by covid because those are free. Not one of the two staff members were wearing a mask during check in. Yet the vacuuming was an outrageous request. The staff members seemed extremely annoyed that we even asked about this service twice. One woman said "as we said, we reserve the right to only vacuum rooms of guests of 7 days or longer". While this is by no means a "4 star" hotel, the experience certainly was! Surf Side is clean, affordable and you can't beat being right on the beach. The pool deck is lovely, though in times of COVID no more than 10 people could fit in the pool. The balconies all have an ocean view, the room I was in was spacious with 2 very comfortable queen size beds, a table and 2 chairs, a love seat and even refrigerator and microwave. Staff was not just professional but offered courtesy with a smile, all rooms were spotless, and cleaning crews were evident (even though there was no room service during COVID). While the food was not gourmet (e.g. canned or frozen fruit in the yogurt, store-bought quiche), it was actually a solid breakfast, and the home fries and muffin were delicious. Usually a buffet was on offer, but during the pandemic trays were prepared in advance. Overall a lovely spot for a weekend getaway or even to explore Nags Head and the Outer Banks with a small family. read more

This was the best hotel of my vacation to the Outer Banks. I had an ocean front room. The room was very spacious, clean, and had a balcony overlooking the Atlantic. The beach was great for walking. The surf was too rough for swimming, but the hotel had a lovely pool overlooking the dune and ocean. When we checked in the staff was welcoming and helpful in recommending local sites and restaurants. The hotel does have an elevator for upper floors. I did not realize that there was a free breakfast included. It was not the typical hotel breakfast. They had freshly prepared breakfast items like Mexican Quiche Cups. Baked goods were fresh not packaged. The exterior of the hotel is rather plain, but it was superior in every other way. We had a lovely stay and would highly recommend Surf Side Hotel. read more

Location: Perfect - right on the beach. Our room (311) had 3 balconies - 1 in the front room that overlooked the ocean to the north over the parking lot and 2 in the master - 1 on the same side and 1 that looked directly out on the ocean. We kept the door open every night to hear the surf and get a cooling breeze. Room: Perfect - super clean and comfy. The decor was very nice and looks to have been recently remodeled. We stayed in a suite so we could have a separate bedroom. Two kids slept on the pull-out sofa in the front room. The front room had a microwave, refrigerator, TV, small table with 2 chairs and the pull-out sofa. The main bedroom had a queen (or maybe king), a TV, a dresser, a small sofa, a coffee table, 2 end tables and a chair. The balconies all had tables and chairs. WiFi: Good - this is the first place we've stayed at where the wireless was actually strong enough to use the Firebox and watch Netflix. Amenties: Indoor and outdoor pool and a hot tub - all were very nice. Outdoor pool was out of season and was undergoing construction but looked nice. Indoor pool area was well kept; the kids enjoyed it. Breakfast: better than the usual continental breakfast; they had waffles, pancakes, muffins, quiches, fresh fruit, cereal, sausage gravy. Not outstanding but good. Nice clean, bright breakfast area. Bonuses: Free wine and snacks at 4 - we didn't take advantage because we not socializers, but the it's nice that they have this. Treats - we stayed here through Easter Sunday and they had tasteful decorations plus colored hard-boiled eggs on the breakfast tables. By far, this has been the most comfortable hotel that we have had the pleasure of staying at while visiting the OBX! The rooms are stylish, clean, and our ocean view room just that, on the ocean overlooking a beautiful stretch of beach! Further, the staff are both friendly and accommodating and bring a sense of community with their afternoon wine social. Let me not forget to mention the beautiful outdoor and indoor pools with plenty of room for families to enjoy some sun and fun. 1. When I called and made reservations I was very clear that I wanted to room where I could sit in my room looking at the ocean while I worked. The lady who took my reservation advise me that my room was an ocean view room and that I could see the ocean while I worked. I got to the room and my view was a parking lot. I went downstairs and told the front desk person that that was a mistake. She advised me that if I went out on the balcony and put my head over the edge I could see the ocean and that was considered an ocean view. She said I did not request an Ocean Front, I advised her that was deceptive language and said that was not acceptable. 2. The price that I was quoted over the phone was different than what I was charged. I believe I was quoted $86 a night, I was charged over $120 a night for the parking lot room, but then I upgraded and I think I paid $176 a night for the room. If I would've known that I definitely would've found a different hotel. 3. The smell from the room was so horrible that right when I got there I had to go out and buy air fresheners and cleaning supplies. Then spend a great deal of time cleaning. 4. The bathtub was so old that it would not even hold water. I could only take a shower. I did not complain about this because they were so deceptive at the front desk about my room I did not think that they would be receptive to fixing a broken tub. 5. Given the amount of time it took me to get my room straightened out, buy all the cleaning supplies for my room, do a deep clean I got a late start. I think I checked out of the hotel 35 minutes late because I I had to make some last-minute phone calls to patients. During the time I was speaking with my patients they called the room repeatedly even though I told them I was just running a few minutes late. They also knocked on the door repeatedly. It was a very stressful check out. That was probably the worst part. My patient was have an emergency on the phone and they were banging on the door ringing the phone off the hook at the same time when no one else was checking in there was no reason for them to have me check out right on time. Most hotels will give you an hour to check out. This was a horrible experience. I love the Outer Banks and I've been here repeatedly, I'm so glad that this is not my only experience. read more

I really enjoyed our stay at the Surf Side Hotel in Nags Head for a couple of reason. 1. It's right on the beach. 2. They have an indoor and outdoor swimming pool. 3. It's walking distance to a couple of bars/restaurants and stores. 4. The people running it are super duper friendly. I was curious about the state of the rooms because I had read some of the reviews that said they were outdated and dirty, but our room (and several other rooms we peeked into during room cleanings) seemed just fine to me. They weren't fancy like a Four Seasons by any means, but they were plenty clean and spacious for my needs and seemed to fit the small, coastal feel quite nicely. They did offer a decent continental breakfast if you didn't want to go out to eat somewhere else. And they do have a honeymoon suite if you really want to up your game. read more

My husband and I booked an ocean view room for our anniversary. My husband is disabled, so he cannot actually walk on the beach - so he ordered the ocean view room because that is how he can enjoy the ocean. When we arrived, we found that our room was in fact a PARKING LOT view requiring you to turn sharply to the right to actually have a view of the ocean. When we called down to the front desk, thinking there must be some mistake, we were abruptly told that we booked an ocean view room and not an ocean FRONT room. They advised they *might* have an ocean front room coming available, however for a $100/night upgrade. We booked 5 weeks prior to our stay to avoid up-charges AND we booked for a room on the ocean AS ADVERTISED. Beware the wording on the website - false advertising. Classic bait and switch? It turned out, they were unable to provide us an ocean FRONT room because they had none available. So, my husband is stuck with a view of a gorgeous parking lot, no sound of the surf - but of car alarms and car doors slamming. Hotel staff were barely apologetic and didn't seem overly concerned about our concerns. Why would they? They already have our money. Happy Anniversary to us. read more

I recently stayed here during Memorial Weekend. It's a very cute and quaint oceanfront hotel. It had everything that we needed during our weekend stay. Be sure to get an oceanfront room - it's worth the spend! There's something so wonderful and peaceful about waking up to the sound of the waves of the ocean crashing. The rooms are simple - nothing extravagant, but they are clean and comfortable. The pool area is decently sized and overlooks the ocean. The oceanfront beach area that the hotel faces is lovely. This makes the trip worth every dime. We saw a pod of dolphins while sitting there during a few of the days. Be sure to check with the front desk staff on their restaurant recommendations. We have picked the Surf Side as a quick getaway at the last minute! It was perfect! The rooms are spacious, the view is great and the service has been amazing.
