I recently stayed here during Memorial Weekend. It's a very cute and quaint oceanfront hotel. It had everything that we needed during our weekend stay. Be sure to get an oceanfront room - it's worth the spend! There's something so wonderful and peaceful about waking up to the sound of the waves of the ocean crashing. The rooms are simple - nothing extravagant, but they are clean and comfortable. The pool area is decently sized and overlooks the ocean. The oceanfront beach area that the hotel faces is lovely. This makes the trip worth every dime. We saw a pod of dolphins while sitting there during a few of the days. Be sure to check with the front desk staff on their restaurant recommendations. They never steered us wrong! read more

We have picked the Surf Side as a quick getaway at the last minute! It was perfect! The rooms are spacious, the view is great and the service has been amazing. The only drawback is we wish the outdoor pool had been in service! The breakfast each day had something new to try! We will be back to stay again! read more

This was a great value in the off season! The room and hotel lobby were clean, there was fairly easy beach access, and the balcony was larger than I am used to. I was only there for one night out and it was freezing, so I can't review the pool or amenities. I wish the indoor pool/jacuzzi had been open later, but they pretty much closed it down by 10PM. I would definitely say it's family friendly, not a wild-party hotel. Continental breakfast was pretty standard...I was able to make a decent meal out of a boiled egg, some fruit, and some raisin toast. I would definitely recommend! read more

Fantastic value for outer banks travel! We have stayed there both in and off season as always fun clean and comfortable accomidations! The rooms are big as come with a fridge, microwave as coffee maker. The daily breakfast is sufficient an the kids are always thrilled to make their own omlettes! Two pools- indoor and outdoor - as well as a hottub. Great beach access. And, my personal favorite, complementary happy hour (wine and snacks) from 4-6pm, daily. My wife and I checked into this hotel for an overnight stop on our east coast road trip and to see Jockeys Ridge dunes as a local attraction. The price was decent and their breakfast was amazing. It was not like the standard plain breakfast you would get from Holiday Inn or other chain hotels. They put some thought into variety and taste, so we enjoyed it. We recommends this place. read more

The room was clean a spacious. My girlfriend loved the fact that it was so clean and smoke-free. Actually the whole hotel is smoke-free. The rooms actually smell good. The service was great too. We arrived in town around 130am on 5/29..i called the hotel to see if their was any rooms available. Valerie answered the phone and said she did have some rooms open. I asked what the hotel was close by and all she could say was nags head no mile marker or anything. After driving around for 20 mins we found the hotel and went inside. She was on the phone when we walked in and looked like we just spoiled her night. She started the check in process and said she hadn't did this in awhile so being in hospitality myself I understood. Turns out the girl on the phone was an employee that was walking her through the steps which was fine until she said oh their walk ins??? I took a seat in the lobby as my boyfriend did the paperwork. After he was finished we got our room key and left. No have a good night or told us what time check out was. Upon entering our room my spirits picked up a little bit I was very pleased with the way the room looked and the cleanliness of it.. Props to the housekeepers. Went to bed around 2am and the phone woke me up at 8 saying breakfast was ready. When my boyfriend came back he said they lost our ticket and that's what took him so long. The breakfast was good no complaints there. My problem is after driving 9 hours to get to the island we paid 150 bucks for little to no sleep and poor customer service..however the woman working that morning was great.. read more

Room below us must have some water damage. According to hotel COVID protocol staff are "asked" to wear masks but most choose not to. South building has no elevator. ALL rooms require at least a two or three story walk up due to parking spaces below building. South building has limited parking. Found myself having to park in the North building lot most nights that we were there. SITUATION - We reserved a Deluxe Oceanview Efficiency. The photographs online show a large room with kitchen appliances, a queen bed, a couch, a sliding glass door and a balcony looking south toward the dunes and Jennet's Pier. Our "Deluxe Oceanview Efficiency" was a large room with kitchen appliances, two double beds, no couch but a small corner chair and small breakfast nook table with two chairs, no sliding glass door but three small windows looking south toward the dunes and Jennet's Pier and no balcony. When I asked the front desk about the obvious misrepresentation, I was given two responses; 1) "those are old pictures", 2) "we do have two rooms that look like that but they have been given to other guests". In my opinion Surf Side Hotel did a classic bait and switch and their attitude was too bad, so sad. read more

We had a wonderful time here. The room was perfect for what we needed. We stayed in one of the loft queen rooms which was great so that our kids wouldn't wake each other. Out four year old loved having the loft. The service was great as well. All of the staff was super friendly and helpful. The indoor pool and whirlpool were nice. The pool was heated which was great for a mid March visit. The breakfast was very good as well, and there was a lot to pick from. The breakfast attendants were super friendly. One even made me a breakfast burrito on our last day since I liked them so much our first morning. We left on a Wednesday, and they normally only make them on the weekends. This was the shoulder season, so I don't know if she could do that when things were busier, but I thought it was a super sweet gesture. read more

I know Nags Head is more about house rentals than hotel rooms, so from the hotels you have to chose from in Nags Head, this is probably the best you're going to get. However, you're going to pay out the nose in prime season, and especially if you want an oceanfront room. Tip, the "partial view" rooms may save you some money and still provide a nice view of the ocean. The room is pretty outdated, but spacious, and the bathroom has only enough room for you to just get by. The view from our balcony was the best part. The pool was a nice add-on, and we enjoyed our pool-side visits. The location is pretty good, too. There wasn't any insulation around the door, so the a/c went out and the bugs came in. We sealed it with a towel each night. Sound also carried easily, and we heard at least one other person mention the same problem. All in all, the hotel is just "okay." I think for the money you spend, you should get a bit more than "just okay" but it was full occupancy, so people (including us) were willing to pay it. I don't think we will again, though. read more

I will use a quote from another guest- if you are looking for posh, look elsewhere. We were last minute guests on a busy weekend. Our room, the last one available, was on the first floor overlooking the pool. The room was clean, given that it is an older hotel. I feel certain that housekeeping did everything in their power to see it was as clean as it could be... but there are just some things that happen in old bathroom crevices, you know? I did pick a hair out of one of our hand towels. It had clearly been laundered into the fabric. Housekeeping had forgotten to leave shampoo in the bathroom so I made due with body gel. All first-world problems - but this hotel did not meet my expectations. The staff was informative and not unfriendly. Breakfast had few healthy options so we went elsewhere. Overall- I will not be back to this hotel. Three stars for a good effort for an older hotel. read more

I will never ever come back to this place ever again next to the vice president Denise who's attitude was not professional or nice she made a comment to my husband saying don't forget there's no smoking in the room like we smoke on top of her or her other vice president not offering us another room or even let us know if there was another room available because our room was filthy the ground was wet soaked from who knows what if the housekeeper would've checked it and clean the right they would've told them and they would've known before we checked in on top of the mattress in the living room being soaked like somebody dumped comment or some type of cleaning products on it it was so much water it went through the box spring we had to call two people just to get this issue somewhat fixed all they did was put a Plastic bag over the wet spot they didn't tell us that we will try to put you in another room see if another room was available nothing on top of saying how many monkeys does it take to make a bed the whole experience was not good for me and my family the people that work there we spoke to them numerous times and none of them had anything to say to us! On top of the people that stayed in the hotel they were all rude and not friendly at all we didn't like the state would not be returning next to nobody speaking the room being dirty hair in the bed the carpet being soaked and them not giving us another option to get another room or anything like that I'm very disappointed in them and I'm very disappointed in the customer service that we did not get on top of other four other people!Also we had to wait 30 to 20 minutes just to catch the elevator when there was only four floors so we spent most of the time walking down the stairs! this hotel this was the worst state ever!!!!!!!!!! This place is wonderful! We stayed many years ago when it was in need of upgrading and that they have done! We had an oceanfront queen and it was perfect! The responsible maintenance of the dunes with the sea oats framing the view is picturesque especially for sunrise which you must attempt to see! I'm sura moonrise would be just as lovely, but we watched a magnificent thunderstorm from our balcony last night. I'm giving it five stars because of the finishing touches like complimentary wine and sangria in the evening, the sound view deck in the back, friendly desk service and the best free breakfast anywhere! read more

Surf Side is one of the best hotels we've stayed at in the Outer banks. We had an oceanside room which was very spacious. There is a nice breakfast included. The staff was friendly. The only negative was spotty wi-fi; but you shouldn't come to the beach to get online anyway! We would definitely stay here again. read more

We stayed here recently and it was far better than we even IMAGINED. We chose an Oceanfront King Superior room on the second floor and it was absolutely perfect! The lady who checked us in was super informative and incredibly nice. The FREE breakfast was delicious and there was a lot of options (AND A WAFFLE MAKER) and I can't tell you how beautiful and relaxing it was to stargaze out across the ocean at night, go to sleep to the sound of the waves and wake up to a breathtaking sunset right on the ocean. Highly recommend this hotel and the Second Floor Oceanfront King Superior room! Next time I visit OBX, I'll be staying here again! read more

Great place to stay in Nags Head. We go there once a year. They have an indoor pool, outdoor pool and are on the beach. All rooms have a view of the ocean. In the afternoons they have wine tasting in the lobby. read more

Got this room through my first experience with Expedia (AKA hotels.com). They misrepresented what they sold me and that made a horrible mess. Fortunately, once the hotel manager got wind that something was amiss, she called me and fixed the problem immediately. I ended up having an amazing stay! The second floor ocean front room had a first class view of the ocean and sits close enough to hear the pounding of the waves easily. (That's a big thing to me!) The room was clean and well appointed, but for me, it's ALL about the view and the proximity to the waves ~ and for that, this room was great! If you're looking for a great ocean front room to totally experience the ocean indoors and out, this would be a great choice! And, should you encounter any problems, I'd encourage you to ask if you might talk with the manager. She's very kind!! read more

My weekend family getaway was completely ruined by the staff at this hotel. DO NOT give this business access to your credit card. They charged my card multiple times for just a two night stay. They are not to be trusted.I will be filing fraud charges against them. I also witnessed another family complaining over being lied to about their "Oceanside room". We stayed in the south building. If you stay there, definitely get a room on a higher floor...we had a view of the dunes and people smoking on viewing deck while looking at the hotel instead of the water. It was annoying enough to have the smell of someone's cigarette ruin the great beach air...but to look at guests sitting on their deck...that's just plain rude. The room decor was a decent sized and the decor was a bit outdated, but it was clean. The high ceilings made the room feel larger than it was which is a plus. The bathroom was small with a tiny toilet. The continental breakfast was great, and the staff was overall really good. We would have liked to have used the Wi-Fi, but the code wasn't provided when we checked-in and it wasn't that big of a deal. Overall, it's a decent hotel and we had a great vacation. I would recommend this place if you're not picky about the bathroom and get a room at a higher level. read more

We had an ocean view room that was steps away from the beach. The room was beautiful and they have friendly staff. The breakfast provided was the best I have ever had in a hotel! Elizabeth in the breakfast room was the best! She gave us a tour of everything offered. They have various breads and mini egg quiches including vegetarian,ham, and sausage.They also offered fruits, french toast, waffles, cereals, yogurt as well as coffee and teas. I was happy that they had decaffeinated green tea! They had a large selection of teas available. They also had some different fruit juices. They have a mini gym available as well. We would definitely stay there again. read more

Great location for this hotel. Our room was cleaned daily and breakfast was quite good. They have a fabulous complimentary coffee machine on the ground floor and lemon water that seems to be available 24/7. The only thing I was disappointed with was our view. We expected an ocean view room since that is what we paid for. However, in our north-facing room on the first floor, we could only see a little sliver of the ocean in the distance. Most of the view was of the parking lot, other houses and power lines. Would have been five stars if the view had been better. read more

I just signed up on Yelp to write a review of the Surf Side. My family and I have been vacationing on the Outer Banks for over a quarter of a century (yikes!), usually staying in a rental cottage. But for a quick couple of days between Christmas and New Years, we picked the Surf Side, fondly remembering a few days spent here many years ago. We were not disappointed. Our room, and the entire hotel, are immaculate. I felt like I could have eaten off the floor. Everything not only looked clean, it smelled clean as well. The young man who checked us in could not have been more friendly and helpful. The only thing that kept me from awarding five stars was the heat. It was so warm in our room that I had to turn on the AC, which was, as others have noted, pretty noisy. I would much rather have that than a dirty room and quiet AC, though! read more

We decided about 2 weeks prior to our visit to go to OBX and, based off of reviews and pricing, we chose Surf Side Hotel. Neither of us had ever stayed here before, so we weren't sure what exactly to expect. I can honestly say that neither of us were disappointed! We arrived about an hour early for check-in, just to see the hotel and find our bearings , but they went ahead and let us in to our room. It's a bit of an unusual setup. There are two different buildings that comprise the entire property. The building that houses the lobby, front desk, breakfast room, and various other basic amenities seemed to be a standard, modern hotel building with indoor hallways and an elevator. The second building (where our room was located) seemed to be a little older in style, but was every bit as comfortable and well-appointed as one would expect. We had a king oceanfront room. Their wording is a little strange on their rooms, but once you arrive you see why. It was oceanfront instead of ocean view because there were dunes that obstructed our view of the sea directly in front of our balcony. However, we could still see the ocean and beach to our left and right. The dunes also provided an extra level of privacy, which we really liked. The staff here was nothing but wonderful. There was a tiny mixup with our housekeeping (they forgot to replace the towels one day) and they went above and beyond to make sure that the mistake was corrected and that we were taken care of. Our room had a fridge and microwave and when we were using the microwave to defrost our lunch cuz the fridge worked TOO well, it went kaput. We called the front office and within 2seconds (I kid you not) maintenance was at our door. The gentleman who helped us was incredibly polite, kind, and provided us with great dinner suggestions and tips! They replaced our microwave within minutes and would check up on us whenever they saw us out and about. Overall, I would say that Surf Side Hotel is close to perfect. It feels like a small, mom and pop run place but with all the amenities and comfort of a larger operation. The only things that were not absolute perfection were the shower/shower head in our bathroom (not enough water pressure or just a crappy shower head... Made taking a shower feel like using a dripping hose), the shower to rinse off ourselves from the beach to our building didn't work but the main building's did, breakfast wasn't served until 7:30am (we're early risers though), and that we couldn't stay any longer!!! We're already planning our next trip to OBX and it will definitely depend on when Surf Side Hotel has availability! :) read more

We went to the coast a few weekends back and tried to identify a relaxing place to stay. Our preference is always to support locally owned businesses, when possible and this seemed like a local spot. Upon our arrival, it was clear that we might not have selected the right place. It was a dingy looking place, but I travel enough for work to know that the rooms make be great so we kept an open mind. We had reserved an ocean-front room and upon check-in we were informed that our room was "in the other building." Let me just tell you what that entailed- an even smaller, dingier establishment with cement floors, and slippery stairs we had to climb (yes, no elevator). The room was unpleasant and we did not feel comfortable relaxing in the bed. The shower was not working and this resulted in a high-speed spray shooting out at us where the silver dial is located (you know the on/off switch to drain or plug the tub). At any rate, it was such a disaster that we left early and found a much better place down the road (Oasis Suites). I would NOT recommend this place if you are at all interested in relaxing in your room. However, if you are merely interested in the beach and don't care about the conditions of your room, then this place would be just fine. read more

Hotel is very accommodating , bad rain storm and we were able to pull our motorcycles under awning and wait out the storm. Meanwhile the staff grilled burgers and fed us. I have not yet stayed in this hotel, but have reserved a room for Thanksgiving vacation. I reserved the room using Trip Advisor, wanting an oceanfront room with a great view, but my reservation confirmation email said I had booked a room with an impeded view. I contacted the hotel by email and phone, and got a call back with an offer to take photos of the view of two different rooms so I could choose the view I wanted. I am very grateful for this, which really went above and beyond ordinary customer service. This bodes really well for our stay over Thanksgiving! read more

I am very irritated that I booked the hotel, and once spoke with my friend she didn't want to have to switch rooms during a two night stay. So I called to cancel the next day (20 days from arrival) and I was going to find another date. The hotel actually stole $25 dollars from me for canceling one day after I made the reservations an 20 days before arrival. They lost a great customer over $25. Just can't believe it. read more
