Loved this inn! The room was perfect for our family of 4 (a superior king room with view of the sound). My husband and son are 6'4. I was worried about ceiling height and sprinkler pipes, but no one hit their head. The inn keepers were super nice. The breakfasts were very tasty. My only wish was that the weather had been warmer. I really wanted to hang out in the lawn, in a hammock or Adirondack chair, to admire all of the fanciful garden pieces that adorned the property. It would have been nice to ride bikes, as well. But again, the wind and cold temps prevented us from fully enjoying all that the inn had to offer. Hope to return one day!

We've been coming to the OBX for over 10 years now and the First Colony Inn has become a main part of the attraction. It's got very well kept grounds with grassy lawns, trees and flowers, picnic tables and hammocks, and a pool just long enough to swim laps in. The rooms here are all different and individually decorated and all have a detailed description on the inn's website so you can choose the exact one you want. In general rooms with king beds are bigger than the ones with queens. This time we stayed in two different rooms (one with a really high bed with a stepping stool which was fun) as we booked late so couldn't get all the nights in the same room - in high season they always tend to be fully booked but last minute openings are possible. The inn's not on the water - top (third) floor rooms have some distant view. But the beach is just a few steps away across a 2 lane road and the inn provides folding beach chairs and towels you can take there with you. There's also nothing more pleasant than just relaxing on the spacious covered wrap around porch in a swing or rocking chairs (especially during a rainstorm). The sound side has more traffic noise but not that noticeable inside the rooms. The breakfast is excellent - including a freshly prepared hot dish which changes daily, plus a wonderful spread for the afternoon social.

The view from Virginia Dare Trail.

Love at first sight. You with the two floor wrap around porches, antique furniture, and spacious library. You, with the hot breakfast bar and in-room coffee pot and fridge. You, with the amazing history and beautiful pictures. And you, with convenient beach access, beach chairs and towels, and friendly reception staff. You... complete my vacation. First Colony Inn is a historic inn that was one of the first hotels in Nag's Head. Its a gorgeous building - I love walking around it! On top of it, the entire layout is comfortable, rustic antique, and beautiful. Upon entering my room, I was wowed by the tasteful decor, the loveseat, and the double windows. I loved the wooden bureaus and large vanity mirrors. The simple and tasteful bathroom with the comfy carpet sealed the deal. And for the price - the value really can't be beat. A few things I'd love to see - the rooms do get quite humid (its a beach after all) so I'd love to see more towel racks and places to hang wet things. The in-room A/C unit definitely helps, but I hate to leave it on when I'm not in the room and housekeeping does not change or rearrange your towels or linens unless you ask. The many stairs here may pose a problem for some, and the rooms that do not require stairs are quite few.

My husband and I stayed at the first colony in August this summer. It exceeded our expectations. The room was clean. The breakfast was made fresh each morning which was great (not just a typical buffet). There was a cocktail hour every day with drinks and snacks which was an extra bonus. They provided beach chairs and towels. We also enjoyed the pool each day. Easy access to the beach across the street. We also took their bikes and went for a little ride around the area. We will definitely be back.

This place is wonderful. It is very charming with every detail planned out. The staff is friendly, the building is adorable, and the rooms are full of charm just to list a few. My favorite things about this place were the grounds - very romantic setting with adorable hammocks, and lounge chairs. The breakfast buffet (complimentary) which was filled with different things like blue crab quiche, fresh fruit, great grits, and so much more! The bathrooms!!! I loved the look the hot towel bar made me so happy! Came for a wedding and can't wait to come back.

The First Colony Inn is the kind of place you dream of staying in the Outer Banks. The inn grounds are well manicured with gorgeous gardens. The private access to the beach is a phenomenal perk as were the numerous beach chairs, umbrellas, and beach cruisers. The room was clean and simple. Of note, especially for a beach hotel, the A/C unit was amazing. The breakfast and happy hour were great touches. Definitely book here!

This is a picture of First Colony Inn from the hotel we ended up at. Note the crosswalk for their guests to cross the road to the beach.

If you have any issues in your suite or questions about locks, they will gladly come over and assist you. The rooms are spacious, very clean, full kitchen, large bathroom, very very comfortable bed, living room, dinning room, a nice balcony and chairs for you to enjoy view of the water, sunset and sunrise, easy access to boardwalk and gazebo on small pier. Also with access to a large swimming pool and hot tub for relaxation... Another plus is it's located between Manteo and Kitty Hawk, so you have plenty of options of places to go for drinks, a good meal, sight seeing, or for a good time in the water. If you are planning to come out here do keep them in mind for a great and comforting stay. Do inquire about specials for special events and specials rooms. There are absolutely things about this TownPlace Suites that I would like to see changed or that I…read moredidn't like, however I'm still giving 5 stars because of the location and the setup they have here and because I personally would go back without a second thought. First, some of the issues I have: The room layout puts one bed very close to the air conditioner and because they have the old-fashioned hotel style AC units, that leaves at least one person getting directly blasted with cold air all night. Using pool towel clips to put a towel over one side of the vent did help but reduced the efficacy of the AC and made the room warmer for everyone else. Breakfast is nice (and free) but the setup of it seems to be done as if this is a business hotel and not a beach front hotel. The cereal choices were all boring adult cereals, the bread for toast was VERY whole grain (as in it had pieces of grains in it), and the only milk they had was white milk (for example). Adding a small amount of more kid-friendly breakfast elements would go a long way. The outdoor pool is sheltered from the wind by the sand bank and gets really hot in the sun, a lightweight shade over the whole (or part of) the deck would probably be a welcomed addition by most people. As for what's great about this place: The location includes a beachfront pool + small snack shack with beach access which is directly across the road from the hotel itself. This gives the best of both worlds with beachfront access as well as having better parking and more room on the hotel property. On non-weekends the price is super affordable for a beachfront Marriott property. Not to mention the only Marriott property on the Outer Banks. It's very close to great food options, many walkable. Stuff for both adults and kids is easy to access. It's also not far to many interesting sightseeing or cultural things to see. All-in-all, I would love to see some minor changes but even with some flaws this is definitely a 5 star option.

Do not stay at this hotel…read more I've stayed in many Marriott properties over the years, but I wish I could give minus five stars to TownePlace Suites OBX. Infrastructure The website photos are completely deceptive. The hotel is not well maintained, despite being built in 2017. There are leaks throughout the property, and visible pockets of mold. The "Blue House" across the street (the beach access point) feels like an afterthought. There was only one deck chair, and it was broken. The handrail leading to the deck was also broken. Hygiene Poor. The interior is not properly cleaned, and both elevators were consistently dirty. Outside, there were empty bottles and trash bags scattered around the parking lot. Beach access Disappointing. If you're expecting easy, relaxing beach access based on the website photos, you'll be let down. You have to cross a street where pedestrians don't have the right of way, pass the poorly maintained deck, and then use stairs to reach the beach. Not worth the hassle. Breakfast Very poor. It's grab-and-go, extremely limited, and tasteless. Skip it and eat elsewhere. Service Unhelpful. We prepaid for a three-night stay but decided to leave after two nights due to the issues above. The front desk did not offer any flexibility or even a credit toward another Marriott property--we simply lost a night. Save yourself the headache. Stay elsewhere--areas like Duck or Corolla offer a much better experience. I'd also avoid Kill Devil Hills altogether; it's not walkable and doesn't offer a pleasant stay.
