View from the porch (photo doesn't do it justice). Beautiful, even on a cloudy day

My boyfriend and I stayed here for the weekend and loved it! The room we stayed in was large and beautiful. We had a king bed, office desk and chair (which was perfect for him to do some work in the evenings), small dining area for breakfast (although we ate outside on the porch every morning), private restroom, fridge, coffee maker, and TV in the room. We could exit our room directly onto the large shared porch at the back of the house (which would only have been shared with one other room, although I don't think anyone was staying there this weekend). The view was gorgeous - we felt like we had our own spot of paradise. Even though it was cloudy all weekend, it was gorgeous. We walked down the pier and sat out there, which was so calm and lovely. Linda and Greg were wonderful to chat with and gave us some great recommendations for places to eat and things to do. The location was ideal to us because we felt like we were away from civilization in the wildlife while still being so close to all the beaches (an especially short drive to Kitty Hawk Beach). This place is such a nice alternative to the mainstream hotels and the overpriced places right on the beach. In terms of our experience and the value of this place, we were both very happy here. I would definitely recommend this gem, and would absolutely stay here again!

The unit is not represented well in the photos. The queen size bed is shoved up against a wall on one side so you can only enter from one side or the end of the bed. There are no side tables to charge phones or set glasses, etc. There's no room for them because the bedroom is that small. I use a CPAP and was unable to use it the whole time we were there as there was nowhere to put it and you can't put them on the floor. You had to turn sideways to squeeze between a corner and the refrigerator to get into the very tiny bathroom. The shower was extremely small, you can't even raise your arms much to wash your hair as there is not enough room in the shower. There is lots of deferred maintenance at this property, rotting wood, trex type boards with no support beneath so they sagged when you stepped on them (walkways and pool deck), formica countertop in room was unfinished on one end, shotty carpentry work throughout the Sea Level unit and lots of bugs (little ones that I have no idea what they were). The homes all around this one were very well maintained but this one stands out as being neglected. Breakfast was packets of instant oatmeal or grits, bagels and apples and bananas, a far cry from what most bnb's offer. At the very least most bnb's offer at least some type of baked item. We will not stay here again. We were celebrating our anniversary and this room was not at all what we had envisioned from the photos. We loved the Outer Banks and will probably visit again but choose a much better place to stay.

It was obvious the minute we entered our room (Deck Side Room) the cleaning was at best minimal. From carpet stains; bugs; mold in the bathroom; molded and dusty vents it instantly made us feel grungy! The room temperature was obnoxiously hot (even on a November night); and the wobbly and filthy ceiling fan barely did a thing. My girlfriend cleaned out dead bugs from the tub and to her surprise brown water came out of the faucet (after running for awhile it was clear water). Breakfast was set for a 6-year old chid - pop tarts, instant oatmeal & grits, 4 powdered doughnuts and single-serve cereal boxes. We used the Keurig to make our own coffee and discovered how gross and unkept the kitchen was. The powdered creamer was a solid brick with dead bugs in it; and the sugar was hard as a rock with rust on the lid! We did not expect to have to go to an amazing breakfast at WaveRider after spending over $200 at this "Bed & Breakfast" We do NOT recommend staying here unless you don't mind uncleanlinesses and just need a bed for the night. The only perk to this location is its proximity to beach.

Filthy, Unsafe, and Insulting Response - Do NOT Stay Here!…read more I have stayed in many places over the years, and this was by far the most disgusting and poorly managed property I've ever experienced. This place should not be advertised at the rate I paid -- it felt like a $50-a-night roadside dump, not a $200+ vacation rental. Here's what I encountered: * Black mold in the bathroom and even on the doors, a clear health hazard. * Thick layers of dust coating the ceiling fans, window ledges, and even the walls -- clearly no one has cleaned this property in ages. * Lamps literally falling apart. * The entire room smelled musty and damp, making it feel unclean and unsafe. * Trash scattered throughout the backyard, including a dirty diaper just left behind. * To make matters worse, there was an animal scratching inside the walls at night, making it impossible to sleep. When I reported these issues to KEES Vacations management, they only offered a pathetic $30 "goodwill" refund, which is beyond insulting given the condition of this property and the amount I paid. It's clear they have zero concern for guest safety, cleanliness, or satisfaction. This property is completely unkempt and neglected. I will never stay at a KEES property again, and I strongly urge others to stay far away. There are plenty of clean, well-managed places to stay -- don't risk your vacation, your health, or your sanity here. Bottom line: * This place is a health hazard. * KEES management is dismissive. * Absolutely not worth the money. Do yourself a favor: DO NOT STAY HERE.

The room had a musty smell that *immediately* began to bother my allergies, its by the beach so I figured it was just hard to keep completely dry. You get limited resources, 3 small, sad pillows, no extra blankets, 1 towel per guest, and no place to get water (except the shower or bathroom sink and just... no.) or ice even in the entry area and hall. The bathroom door didn't latch, much less lock and even if you held it closed there was a 2in peep hole where the latch *used* to be and the wood is worn down. We're married, c'est la vie. The toilet did *not* want to flush but if you held it a while it finally would. There was no hook for the hand towel they provided so we draped it across the back of the sink- not ideal. Still, the room seemed nice enough at first.. until we tried to shower. It had a jacuzzi tub that we were excited to try and now will fuel my germaphobia and nightmares for years to come. The shower walls had someone else's hair on them, an indication that they had not been cleaned. We were sore from the drive and the tub looked clean enough, even though the walls were gross, we planned to shower after anyway. To start, it was broken, if you pressed the button the bubbles would start but as soon as you took your finger off the button, it stopped. We rigged it with our keys to get it going. When the vents started, the water began to make *actual* bubbles... we had not used soap yet. Then, to our everlasting horror, when the bubbles burst against the tub wall, a greenish brown scum spread across them. I about vomited so we quickly tried to drain the tub (we had to pry the plug out because it didn't have a handle or anything). The dispensers for both the soap and shampoo were empty. They didn't even spurt a tiny bit out so they have probably been empty for quite some time. We had checked this ahead of time, thankfully, and borrowed some from travel companions in another room (they, too, were almost out. So, we had a coffee cup with *maybe* two quarter sized squirts of soap- once I added hand soap to the mix?). We always bring soap but it was only one night and hotels always provide it, right? Once we had scrubbed the top layers of our skin off, we climbed into a creaky and *very* uncomfortable bed. The shade on the window beside the bed would not go down further than halfway and the curtains were this so they did not block the lights from the street. The AC is above the closet so there is no way to cover the light it produces which was an impressive amount (at this point, just about anything would have annoyed me, so...), this meant that there were bright lights on either side of us. The toilet periodically made loud running water noises even though no one was using it. This, too, made sleep difficult. Hands down, the *worst* hotel experience of my entire life. I created a yelp account for the sole purpose of warning all potential guests away. TLDR: Please, SPARE YOURSELF. Rent some place else.

The proprietor (and very talented chef) Ruth has mastered the art of hospitality, inviting us to truly make the home our own. She didn't mind one bit that we planted ourselves in the reclining leather chairs in the stately octagonal library with another couple and yakked enthusiastically until the wee hours. After a blissful night sleep, breakfast the following morning was a marvelous affair. We prepped a coffee for ourselves at the Nespresso machine (fantastic!) and meandered around the grounds until the heavenly smell of baking croissants lured us to the elegant, light-filled breakfast room. Usually an eat-and-run proposition for us, we lingered for over an hour enjoying the delectable food and the conversation with the other guests. The charm of the house and its gracious owner had worked its magic - we were refreshed, satiated and inspired. We departed with great reluctance but the spirit of the Truitt house hung about us for the rest of the day and onto the next as we traveled home. Great location too! A couple things worth mentioning though. Our room was very damp. And not just a little humid (we lived in FL for 15 years so we understand humidity), but like our clothes felt wet when we put them on and paper gift bags were soft. We actually turned off the air and opened the slider to air the room out a couple times. If I had to take a stab in the dark, there's likely a serious mold issue behind the walls. There was mold growing on the AC unit. Another thing about the area in general (not just the hotel)...flies. Be prepared to have them tag along with you EVERYWHERE. They were in every restaurant we went to, by the pool, at the beach, in the gym, in every store. It was the most bizarre thing. Just everywhere. Also, I didn't realize how dog friendly this hotel was. We have two dogs and love them, but our room clearly had a dog in it previously with signs of hair on the AC unit and in the carpet. I wish we'd have brought our own pillows as the ones in our room were down pillows and even with 2 of them, they still fall flat. Overall, the location, price, service, and amenities were totally fine but those things like the room being super damp, the flies, and pet hair were just little nuisances that I think people should be aware of.

Unfortunately, after using the vouchers, I checked my account the next day and noticed I had still been charged for breakfast, which was disappointing. The room itself was comfortable. The pillows were soft, the blankets were warm, and we slept well. However, there was one large bug flying around the room, and I have no idea where it came from, which was definitely unpleasant.
