Decent thin crust pizza. Cheese is the predominant flavor, but scattered pockets of sauce provide tang. The crust at the top of the slice is distinctly cracker-like, so go to Pinocchio's or the Just Crust if that's not your thing. Pepperoni was thin and crispy. The small store is set up in a really weird way. There aren't any signs or descriptions of the pizzas, and they're hidden back behind the counter, so every consecutive person has to ask "What pizzas do you have?" The selection included chicken basil, three cheese tortellini, and squash ricotta when I was here. Once you place your order, they'll heat the slices in the oven and place them on a ledge at the right of the store for you to pick up. However, the red pepper flakes and other toppings are placed at the left side of the store, so you have to cut through the line (and there usually is a line...) twice. It's not a big deal, but I just feel like this place could have a more intuitive setup. The outdoor seating right in the heart of Harvard Square can't be beat, and the prices ($3.50 for a slice, or $3 for cheese) are reasonable enough. I was working a promotion recently in Harvard sqaure. The week before, someone had told me to visit Otto's, but unfortunately, the boss was buying and he had found 'great pizza' at Pinnochios. You don't complain when you're getting free pizza. However, the boss wasn't paying the next day so I went to Otto's. OTTO Pizza, believe me, I really wanted to like you but I just couldn't. I've passed by you practically every day for weeks and always get tempted by the smell of your gourmet pizza fresh out of the oven. I finally decided to walk in this week when I was in Harvard Square and needed a post-dinner snack. The pizza is just okay... I had a slice of chicken basil the first time and onion and sausage another time. I really wish OTTO Pizza would serve more of their exotic pizzas by the slice in addition to your usual suspects (pepperoni, cheese, [insert meat]). My biggest complaint with this place is the fact that their pizza is simply not very filling. The crust is too thin and they're not very generous with the toppings. For how big the slices are, I would expect there to be more substance. But after having a slice of pizza here for lunch today, I was still starving and had to run to a coffee shop to grab a bagel, which was probably more fulling than the pizza itself. Our group was walking down Harvard and looking for a place that could 6 pple without a reservation on a Saturday. It was almost 10p and we got in right away. One thing I noticed (and liked) about Boston is that they have a thing for Sangria...and so do I! I had a few glasses of their seasonal pumpkin flavored red sangria, and it was great change from the usual cocktail or beer. I'd suggest that with a larger party, each person orders their own small pizza and shares with the table. Each small yields about 5 good size slices. A couple of the pizza's that stood out were the pasta pizza, which came topped with tortellini, the eggplant and artichoke, and the goat cheese. The inside of the restaurant is just pretty cool because you can tell they put some thought into it. There was a cool old mantle above the doorway and you felt like you were in a high restaurant, but didn't feel out of place. Definitely check this place out! read more

Julie has it right - since I first visited Otto's last month, any time I think of getting pizza I go out of my way to go there (even though they don't deliver). I've had various vegetarian pizzas there, all delicious. The place is usually standing-room-only, with a slim counter up against the window looking out (where you can stand and eat a slice) and now a few antique wooden chairs just outside the window that you can sit in. My hat is off to them for running their restaurant with that kind of energy. The staff clearly enjoy their work, the place smells delicious, and from a few stores away you can see the sidewalk traffic stopping to gawk and consider grabbing a bite. It's fun to loiter by the store and listen to the vibe -- it's so different from the rest of the Square. Everyone is happy, passersby enjoy the aroma and sometimes pause in a daze, wondering for a minute if they actually want pizza after all. And they are fast. Tonight I went at 10pm and there were 10 people inside, 4 sitting by the window counter eating, 3 waiting for pizza, 3 looking and ordering. I ordered a small from scratch (red: ricotta and eggplant), they told me it would be ready in 12 minutes, and I had it in 11. On the way out I took a stack of menus to give to my friends... (By the way -- why has it been so hard to get decent quick places to eat like this in the Square?! THANK YOU to whoever put a bee in the bonnet of our Portland saviors.) EDIT: the butternut squash pizza, the mashed potato pizza, and the cheese tortellini are reliably fabulous. And the thin crust and parmesan haven't failed me yet. While on a short research trip to peruse the archives at Harvard, I stopped at Otto's for lunch a couple times. As a confirmed pizza snob, let me say that this place does it right. The crust is thin and crispy. The toppings are creative and perfectly combined. The service is classic pizza parlor fun hijinks. The first day I came by after skipping breakfast, so I got two slices: a mashed potato with bacon and chives AND a tortellini and three-cheese slice. Both of them were savory and delicious. The woman at the cash register is friendly and funny and the banter between her and the guys in the back working the ovens is priceless. The second day I came back because there was a slice that I really wanted to try but didn't have room for the first time: pulled pork and mango. Frickin' amazing. I plan on trying to recreate this one at home. At $3.50 per slice, this place is total win for Harvard Square lunch. read more

I stumbled upon this place as I was heading home from Harvard Square and was really hungry. I was happily surprised when I walked in and saw all of the slices available and then that the price for one was $3.50. I ordered a slice that had butternut squash, cranberries, and ricotta cheese. The slice was really delicious, the sweetness of the squash and cranberries and the creaminess of the ricotta were a good mix. The pizza got crispy when heated up so there was a nice crunch to it. There isn't a lot of space in here and if you eat in here you will be standing up and it's definitely not enough place to even linger. The weather was nasty out so I stayed inside and ate my pizza and then ventured out into the bad weather. I will definitely be coming back here and trying out their other pizzas. read more

White bean, roasted tomato, herb, and red pepper They were all just meh... I liked the creativity of the toppings, but the execution wasn't that great. The crust was kinda chewy, without much crisp. All of the pizzas, especially the squash and white bean ones were very dry. It may be a good deal to walk in and get a slice for $3, but to order large pizzas to go is not a good value and a big pain if you're driving since there is no place to stop and get out of the car. I am a HUGE fan of Otto Pizza. I was recently in Brookline, and I noticed that they are opening another location there this summer, and I am so happy!! The Harvard Square location is closer to me, but I'm happy that others will get to experience the joy that is Otto. My boyfriend and I often come here for a quick, easy, late-night date. There is no place to sit, but there's nice wooden standing bar, which is great for people watching. They usually have about 8 or 10 pizzas out, and the staff is never impatient when you ask them to repeat what toppings they have. Speaking of toppings, the most unexpected combinations are usually the most tasty. Bacon, mashed potato and scallion is one of my favorites, as is the white bean with sausage. The cauliflower is also good. In fact, I haven't met a pizza at Otto that I haven't liked. The thin crust, the ample slice, the perfect ratio of toppings to base... delicious. They also have a decent selection of drinks that they make -- I've tried the fruity lemonade, I can't remember what fruit exactly, but it was good. They also have tea, lemonade, and Arnold Palmers, as well as bottled water and a few other drinks. I'm a regular at Otto and always will be. read more

The best pizza I had in Boston with great toppings and this wonderful flaky crust that's chewy on the inside. My favorite is the potato bacon. The sausage and white bean pie is also amazing. I'd easily give it 5 stars on the food alone, but 4 overall as the place is super tiny. I don't expect to be able to sit down, but it's difficult to even wait for your slice (or whole pie) comfortably if you stay inside. When it's freezing outside and you just want some warm pizza, waiting by an open door or outside by the graveyard is no fun. read more

Yummmmmy. Otto's is THE place for pizza in Harvard Square. The inventive topping combinations are all a must-try. The tomato sauce is PERFECT, and I love the thin crunchy crust. Be careful about coming during busy lunch and dinner rushes ... the wait can be long and chaotic, even if you place your order ahead of time. Try to snag a spot in the outdoor seating area, the people watching can't be beat. My only complaint is that depending on the slice, the pizza can be a little overseasoned ... tasting spicy at times. read more

Three slices were ordered, at the uniform price of $3.50 per slice: - Ricotta and Basil - Bacon and Onion - White Bean and Sausage In general the pizza was thin and wonderfully crispy, and the crust was very good as well -- not too much bread. The Ricotta and Basil slice tasted strongly of the basil, and we really loved it. The bacon and onion pizza was pretty tasty, but nothing special: a normal topping on an exceptional pizza base. The white bean and sausage blew me away though. First, I love white beans, and they are a rare topping to see on a pizza. The sausage is rather spicy and the whole combination is melt in your mouth good. I definitely want to go back to order some whole pizzas! read more

Yummy slices of heavenly pizza, served with less grease and fresher ingredients than the famous Pinnochio's just round the corner. There isn't much seating here, so I normally get my slice to go if I'm in a rush during the day or I need a quick snack in the afternoon while I'm out in the area. Otherwise, I call ahead to order a whole pizza if I'm planning ahead for dinner, and getting a whole pizza at $16-$18 does end up being a lot better value than the pre-made slices at $3 per slice if you are sharing. I also like ordering my own pizza, because then they make it fresh and it's not sitting out there in the open. The wait time is usually about 30 minutes on a busy evening for your pizzas to be ready. I liked the mashed potato pizza, which was a little strange but grew on me; and I also like the mushroom pizza as the ingredients were very fresh. They also have vegetarian options, which is good if you're sharing with friends. I can't remember if they have a half-and-half option, but I think they did as I recall trying that once, and you just pay the higher price of the two. I'm a fan! read more

Delicious thin crust pizza, but expensive. Pros: The pizza is delicious. The ratio of tomato sauce, cheese and crust are perfectly tailored to each pizza. All the pizzas are tasty and original, I definitely recommend the more interesting pizzas instead of simply cheese or pepperoni. The best pizza I've had so far was the eggplant, ricotta, basil pizza. The shop is pretty tiny but has a modern pizzeria look to it, which really adds to the experience. Cons: The pizzas are so thin that you can eat a whole pie by yourself and, considering how much they cost, this can rack up quite a price if you want to feed a group. Also, some of the pizzas aren't that amazing. The vegetable pizzas are delicious but some of the meat pizzas are less great and whether or not they are worth the price is an endless debate in my family. Conclusion: Incredibly delicious veggie pies for a pretty high price, but the price outweighs the quality for most meat pies. read more

Im not really sure how to explain this pizza. Its just different. Tasty, but different. Its almost like a flatbread, but not. Its thin crust and not doughy and very light. On the crispier side. The place is small, so the choices are limited, but the the selection is diverse. I went with a mushroom and cauliflower slice, and a mushroom, onion, and something else slice (I like mushrooms). Both were tasty. The mushroom and cauliflower was surprisingly spicy. Must have been some crushed red pepper hidden in there somewhere. The other slice was a bit sweeter with a little more weight to it. The people that work there are really friendly and easy going. A nice little pizza shop. I have faith that ordering full pizzas for pickup warrants the good reviews, but I'm consistently disappointed ordering by the slice for a quick dinner. The pizza itself sits on shelves behind the counter, and when you order a slice is removed to be quickly reheated in the oven before serving you. In my experience, the pizza always tends to taste like it isn't the freshest. It's not too expensive, only $3.50 a slice, but I expect pizza that tastes better from a place like this.
