My nephew and niece took my sister and me to Ottava Via for a belated Mother's Day celebration. They have been there many times, but it was the first time for us. First, the place is so welcoming. Several different rooms as well as the outside patio, which has bocce ball. It was too warm & humid for us, so we sat inside at a table near the bar. The servers were all very friendly; it seemed a different person brought each course. We had the bread service and calamari for an appetizer. The bread and herb butter were very good, and I understand that it does cost the restaurant to serve it, but $7 seemed like a lot to me. I also enjoyed the calamari. I had the pasta Bolognese (they had some other name for it), which is one of my favorite kinds of pasta. This did not disappoint. I loved the super wide papardelle noodles (also a favorite!) and the small scoop of cheese (burrata, maybe?) on top. My sister had the mushroom pizza (also with a different name). She enjoyed it as well. I am glad they decided to take us there; it was all very good and in a nice atmosphere as well. read more

It was lively an loud on a Saturday night. Portions were large. The food was tasty but they relied heavily on salt and oil for effect, which made for a fun time but left us feeling greasy and puffy. The waitress asked my husband 3 times if he wanted a third beer. Who did she think was driving home and why so pushy? Broccolini - nicely cooked, buried in cheese, a spicy aioli-type topping. The greeter wasnt super friendly but maybe the dreary day was getting to him but because he was in a conversation with someone when we arrived he looked pestered. Our server was friendly and attentive. The food was spectacular! We enjoyed their tuscany potatoes and several pasta dishes as well as a tiramisu roll-up which was like a swiss roll. Prices were reasonable and it seems like everyone was happy with portions except me, but that could just be me. The seating area has worn-but-warm feel to it, some little knick-knacks could go but overall it was nice. Table was clean on top but could use some detailing on the edges. I did observe a man working the bar serving a woman who I believe ordered a soup, when he was at the kitchen station to pick up the food he grabbed a spoon, inspected it, and polished it with his thumb instead of a cloth and gave it to the customer for her meal. Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. They don't do walk ins, but despite it being a Saturday night, we were able to get a table for 8 within minutes. The restaurant has a good amount of seating. Our server was fantastic, answering all of our questions about drinks, features, and soup of the day. All of the staff were very friendly, saying hello and asking how we were. I ordered the virgin fresh fruit smash to drink, and it was refreshing. I thought the NA champagne added a nice touch. I was happy with this selection as good mocktails are sometimes hard to find and are generally more basic. The food here is excellent! We decided to get some small plates to share. We went with the bread service and the bread was light and fluffy and came with a whipped butter that melted in nicely. We also ordered the arancini because who doesn't love a good fried rice ball and they were delicious. My friends and I also shared the Caesar salad, which came with anchovy and a breaded hard boiled egg. I loved the savory flavor these ingredients added. For my main I had the feature, which was rainbow trout with a creamy sauce paired with fingerling potatoes and asparagus. This dish was phenomenal! The portion was big and the fish was light. Tried this place on opening day for the first time. I knew there would be a wait. At first, they said 45 mins to an hour. Not bad, so I put my name on the list. I received a text saying I was on the list and the wait was 1 hour, 15 mins. We walked around, had cocktails elsewhere before receiving a call an hour and a half later offering a table outside. It had gotten chilly out so we passed on the outside table, but when we did, they said it would be another hour! We went back and they had completely forgotten about getting us a table. They rectified it by giving us the next available table. Our server was Emily and she was awesome. I ordered the Penne Alla Arrabbiata with chicken and shrimp. After a morning of meetings in downtown Detroit, we found Ottava Via thanks to fellow Yelpers. We started with the bread service, and it came out warm from the oven with a generous portion. A perfect beginning. I ordered the burrata caprese, which was refreshing and light. The heirloom tomatoes were sweet and bright, and the balsamic had a nice balanced tang. I do wish the portion of burrata was slightly larger. Arancini is one of my favorite dishes, and not every Italian restaurant offers it, so this was a treat. I really enjoyed it, and you could taste a subtle hint of prosciutto in the filling. Our server, Claudia, was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. We had a great lunch experience at Ottava Via. The restaurant is large and was really nicely decorated for the holidays. We shared a few small plates and a pasta: roasted broccolini, garlic and goat cheese, burrata caprese, bread service, and cacio y pepe with added grilled chicken. Everything was paced perfectly. They don't offer complimentary bread, so the bread service was a late add when our server suggested it. The bread was really good and piping hot out of the oven. Everything we ordered was delicious, felt well balanced, and was the perfect amount of food for two. My favorite bite was probably the garlic and goat cheese. The simple grilled chicken was also unexpectedly a standout. They have a decent drink selection, and we both went with a glass of red. Service was very friendly and attentive, and our food was brought out one at a time, so we were able to enjoy each dish fully without being overwhelmed with too many at once. Ottava Via just gets better and better every time we have it! We went for lunch this time and couldn't help but get the same dishes we had last time- it was just so good we had to. Again 10/10!! From the moment we stepped in it was just perfect. Friendly and helpful staff, very clean, cozy and inviting atmosphere, and incredible food and drinks. They make a really great lemon drop too! The Cacio E Pepe was extremely flavorful and the bucatini was cooked perfectly, and the same thing goes for the chicken Alfredo. The other star of our meal was the Garlic and Goat Cheese small plate- WOW. I could've made an entire meal out of the goat cheese and garlic itself! It was so good I didn't want to stop eating it! Just an amazing meal this evening during our first visit. Sat at the bar and had great service. Atmosphere was busy and friendly but loud - but not too loud to talk. We started by splitting the Caesar Salad and my wife was happy that it included white anchovies. What we did not expect was the bedded fried farm egg with a hot soft yolk when cut into. I had a hearty and flavorful Ragout alla Bolognese with braised veal and pork topped with a dollop of ricotta. So good. My wife started with a nice glass of Chianti, which oddly the Italian restaurant we went to the night before did not carry. It went perfectly with the braised short rib topped by fried onions and on a bed of extremely light mascarpone polenta. My wife loved it. She said it was elevated comfort food. To top it off, we had a loaf of the homemade bread with butter and olive oil. I don't think we could eat here again (unless we were having pizza) without having this. Delicious. Large helpings meant that we will thoroughly enjoy leftovers tomorrow. It was exactly what we were looking for and will definitely be back soon. read more

We were seated quickly in mid-afternoon Sunday. We ordered appetizers - garlic shrimp, chop salad, one pizza, one pasta Bolognese, and one chicken noodle soup. garlic shrimp: 3/5. about 6 small-medium sized shrimp in butter garlic and lemon sauce with toasted / grilled bread. The shrimp by itself was too salty for my liking and I needed the bread to neutralize the flavor. I also was not a fan of the overly - blackened bread and asked for replacement. The squeeze of lemon was fresh and needed. The salad was so so and although fresh was nothing special. There were chopped celery, carrots, some fresh cheese on top. The dressing was decent. However it is a normal tasting salad. The pizza was above average. Thin crust, not dry, thin layer of cheese. Some basil scattered throughout. Loved by the whole family. The pasta Bolognese was soft, served with ricotta cheese in the middle. Thin long noodles with red sauce. If you haven't tried their pasta I would try this one. You can't go wrong. Chicken noodle soup. Too salty. Good portion but definitely not very drinkable given its salt content. Definitely a minus one for the wait time. Yes I get it everything is made in house and from scratch but the wait time for the pasta was close to 1 hr. That is ridiculous considering we nearly finished all other dishes before this arrived. I was so close to just cancelling it. Service was above average. We were checked on multiple times. The waitress was nice and patient. She explained the menu well. She told us her favorites. Ambiance was nice, rustic Italian feel inside. Hygienic. I might give this place another try if I'm around the area and had enough time to wait. read more

Went here for my friend's bday with our girls! Our server was Izzy and she was super sweet and helpful. We shared the calamari for an app and it was nice and crispy and the sauces were yummy as well. I ordered the Pasta Alfredo and added chicken and it was delicious. The chicken was soo good and crispy. Everyone else also enjoyed their pastas and pizza. We got the complimentary birthday dessert which was some sort of Nutella pastry which was yummy but the bday girl couldn't have that so we ordered the tiramisu. It was their take on a tiramisu and it was okay I've had better. Our check was able to be split so she gave us an option to split it into two cards but looking back this didn't make sense to do because everyone ordered different things and makes it more confusing to pay each other back. We all got drinks, I got the fruit smash mocktail which tasted like liquid apple pie and was sooooo yummy. We split a couple of appetizers, I normally like my calamari pretty crispy, theirs was a bit on the chewier side but it tasted very fresh and I loved the sauces that came on the side. The arancini was pretty small but also tasty, the order only comes with 3 but you can add on additional balls for a couple dollars. We also split the pesto pasta and the cacio e pepe. The cacio e pepe was perfectly creamy and well seasoned and the pesto was very tasty as well, the pasta tasted fresh and nothing was super heavy. Reservations aren't taken for parties under 5, so we walked in, and got seated in about 30 minutes, not a long wait at all! I came here with three friends and we wanted to get some appetizers and entrees to share, our server recommended maybe 3/4 apps and 1 entree, or 2 apps and 2 entrees, we went with the latter and got the calamari, arancini (comes with three, we paid extra for a fourth!), pesto, and cacio e pepe. I honestly think we could've ordered another entree or two, but it was enough for a light dinner. This was our first time to Ottava Via. It was outstanding! The food was delicious. We (my husband, my mom and I) had the Branzino, the skirt steak and the meatball and Tuscan potato starters. Luckily we were staying across the street at the Godfrey, so it was an easy decision to stop in to Ottava Via for a snack while in town recently. The vibe inside was very cute, old-school Italian restaurant and it was decorated for the holidays - so cozy. We were seated right away but I would recommend a reservation. We just wanted something light to split, so we got an order of the cacio e pepe and the Caesar salad. The food came out pretty quickly and was delicious. I love a good cacio e pepe but don't often order pasta at restaurants - this dish had me wondering why I don't often order pasta at restaurants! It was almost as good as the best version of this dish I had in Chicago once. Like an adult buttered noodles - comfort food at its finest. The salad was super fresh and savory and I loved that they include anchovies! (Of course you can request them be left off the salad.) Took a quick trip to Detroit. This was the best place I ate at while visiting. The pizza (sausage and burrata) was delicious. The homemade pasta (cacio e peppe) was really good as well. I tried the meatball appetizer which was paired with a Marsala sauce that made it so flavorful. I would definitely recommend this place. Ottava Via This was the first restaurant I visited during my trip to Detroit. This Italian eatery was very inviting, but may have been better suited for dinner due to its dark ambiance. I started with the bread service. I can't put the finger on the type of seasoning of the bread, but it was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside - and not too crunchy that it scratched the inside of your mouth. The butter was even better. Most of the olive oil that came with the butter flowed out of its hole, which was a disappointment, but even without it the butter was amazing. I had to force myself to stop eating or I wouldn't have room for anything else. For my main I ordered the margherita pizza which was different than I expected. The mozzarella was much stronger than any margherita pizza I've ever had and it overpowered the pizza sauce, which with certain bites tasted slightly off. For the most part though, these flaws were minor and the pizza was quite enjoyable. Their lunch service was quick and pleasant, and I was very grateful that it wasn't too loud. If you want to go out to lunch with limited time to eat, this is your place! I could've easily been in and out in 20 minutes, but the restaurant is very comfortable and the staff were efficient. I would give it 3.5 starts, only because the food was alright and the staff were professional enough, but not necessarily personable. read more

After letting the manager know at the end of the meal our experience he did not have much to say. He told us to come see him next time we are there!?? I'm not sure why and now I know they do not know how to treat guests. The ambiance was ok and the food was ok. I needed to season it but the pasta was soft and the crust on the pizza was good.
