My father took me Gonella's when I was a kid, and he was working in Detroit as a television director. This was the sandwich shop that made me love subs. I can't believe the place is still here after all of these years. There are 2 types of subs here: Italian, and "Other Subs", so you know that this shop sprang from the vibrant Italian community that once populated Detroit. The Italian Subs at Gonella's are ordered according to how many layers it builds up (which I think is a unique concept). These layered Gonella Italian Subs are layered with a variety of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Mortadella, Smoked Ham and Capicola), provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions & Gonella's homemade dressing. Soft or hard roll. Extras: Peppers (+.50) Cheese (+.50) - (Turkey is reserved for the "Other Subs). 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese --- $8 8 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $9 12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $12 14 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $13 18 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $14 The subs are heavy and delicious. This is the original sub sandwich for my team. It's been here for ages. My team goes more often than me, but it's the place to go when you are hungry. Soft sub buns, tons of stacks of meat, lettuce and tomato or not. No one goes hungry after a sub here. Some deli spots tend to skimp on the protein, but not this place. My team members favorite is the Italian, 6 stacks. I usually will go for a turkey or chicken stack. They offer up to 18 stacks, haven't tried that yet. read more

I was so excited to try this place after reading all the positive reviews but I have to say it was just ok. Walking into the shop the smells of an Italian deli were definitely in the air. The service was prompt and friendly. The sandwiches were a good portion but can't say anything about it blew me away. The biggest disappointment was the pasta salad, coleslaw, and potato salad which I ordered. They all lacked flavor and for the price were far from a good deal. The place kinda looked run down and I'm sure had it's glory days once upon a time. I can't say that it was worth the trip down river but if you're in the area and want a basic sub its not bad. read more

Wow! It pays to visit the original. Gonella's packs all the noms you could ever want to satisfy your fresh-made deli cravings. At Gonella's the subs rule. And it ain't about the meat and cheese; it's HOW MUCH meat and cheese! You order by the layer, ranging from 6 to a WHOPPING 18. Top it their way, or do your own thing. I've lived around this store my whole life and I've never been to Gonella's and one day I thought to myself might as well give it a shot. The service is quick, even with a long line you won't spend more than 8 minutes in here. The sandwich shop also doubles as a store that specializes in Italian snacks and such. WOW- glad I finally tried this 75 year old establishment! Ordered a six layer sub.,thinking it would be subway sized - nooooooo . Could only finish 1/2 of it. Was delicious!. Fresh! Friendly staff. What a unique place to grab a sandwich. It's inside a grocery store. When you walk in it looks like you are going grocery shopping but instead you stay to the right and follow the incredible smells. Baking bread, olives, meat, cheese all of it just lingers in the air. There is a sign to get in line next to the food case., and the menu I. The wall. I got the right layer Italian and provolone sub. Picked out chips and a drink. We are dealing with people who can hussle. That sandwich was made fast and efficient. People were coming and going. Wish I had room for a cannoli. Gonella's is a local institution and a wonderful place to get a delicious sandwich in the shadow of the Marathon refinery. I like their 6x1 Italian with the dressing on the side so I can drive home with it without the dressing mushing up the whole sandwich. The bread is pillowy and soft, the luncheon meats and cheeses are fresh and savory and the service is quick and efficient. They have pop, chips and specialty groceries as well, but the highlight is the best Italian hoagie in the Detroit area, in my humble opinion. If you are passing through, do yourself a favor and try their delicious sandwiches! read more

Gonellas is well known for their subs. During the weekday lunchtime the line can get really long. The service is good. I always get a 6 or an 8 layer with everything. They have bigger subs as well and also some side dishes like potato salad and pasta salad. I recommend this place I usually eat here 1x a week. read more

Definitely over the top! A great old fashioned meat submarine sandwich. I had the 18-3, it was delicious. It gave me a real nostalgic feel when my mouth couldn't fit around, but back then it was my mouth was too small. Not, that the sandwich was HUGE...LOL. 5 Stars Absolutely Incredible! Just grabbed the Italian Original from Gonella's and WOW this sandwich was straight-up next level! Packed with flavor, fresh ingredients, and that classic Detroit touch that hits every time. You can taste the love and tradition in every bite. Been wanting to go here for a bit ... finally went and did not disappoint. I only bought a 6layer Italian -- so good. The bread is fantastic. The dressing is really good. I could easily have split my sub with someone. Also picked up a selection of olives that had. Definitely recommend. There was a line when we got there, but went fast and service was friendly. By far the best best best aunthentic Italian sub I have ever had in my life! You can really taste the love that they put into each and every sandwich. Even if the line is out the door the service is quick and efficient and it never feels like you're waiting long. It is inside of a party store so keep that in mind. The OG Gonella's does not play. The sub is unlike any other Italian sub in the area. It can be big or massive depending on your order and always very tasty. The market is quaint and sparsely stocked with a nice selection of drinks and chips. They carry their own brand of sauce and some select Italian olive oils. Nothing too fancy and absolutely nothing unnecessary. The wall art is precious too. The sub itself is seasoned adequately and not over done. Cheese and meat is stacked ever so tightly together. Such deliciousness in each bite. I love how the area surrounding is a complete industrial wasteland. I would highly recommend a quick stop into Gonella's. read more

As I continue my search for the best Italian subs in Detroit, it was only right to make a stop at Gonella's! This sub was delicious and you can really taste the care they put into their food. If the sub looks big in my picture, it's because it is! It's meat packed, fresh, and I loved their sauce! I could only finish one half, but that means lunch for two days! Even after one day, everything was still delicious and maybe better since the sauce marinated overnight! I added peppers and extra sauce on my sub, and I recommend! The antipasto was good and really gave you that homemade feeling when you ate it! I will be back! read more

This place is fine - and this is based on a turkey sub (as a non pork eater so I cannot speak to the Italian sub experience). Ingredients seemed fresh, the smoked turkey doesn't taste like anything special. Was frustrated that we asked for extra dressing on the side (not on the sandwich) and when we got home there was nothing in the bag so the sandwich seemed flavorless. They did not make one of our sandwiches correctly and added onions to something that shouldn't have (the onions polluted the sandwich even after pulling it off). The price is spot on for what we received so I'm not over the moon enthusiastic nor am I beyond livid - we got what we paid for - mediocre sandwiches. Would try it again if I decided to get an Italian - maybe that would be more promising? Otherwise, I don't feel the need to drive 20 min out of the way to get it. read more

Are you f'in kidding me man? The service grade A. The sandwich 8 ply was delicious. I don't even like italian meats usually but the reviews were so good I had to try. I just asked for it "normal" like your locals do it. BOOM. I found myself eating the whole thing in minutes with their cherry bbq chips. YUMMY!!!! I'll be back someday. I had the Italian 12 layer 2 slices of cheese on a hard roll. With tomatoes, onions, extra Italian dressing and no lettuce. Hard Roll isn't a true hard roll. I come from the west coast and want a hard roll that makes your jaw hurt after chewing on it. The sandwich meats could of be sliced a little thinner. Meat was sliced thick like bologna. I prefer super thin cut meats for my deli sandwiches. The sandwich lacked pickled items such as pickles, pepperoncini, but came with the normal fixings such as tomatoes, lettuce and onions. Order extra extra Italian dressing if you like a cut. Next time I will choose an 8 layer with 2 cheese layers. I will blame myself for ordering. Staff was great. I've been to a few delis in the Detroit area and each left me disappointed. This place did the same but is much better than what I've had. Overall not a bad sandwich attempt. I will try this place one more time but order more specific to my likes. This was my first time here. read more

Oh, HELL YES!!! Well worth the trek to downriver for the best Italian sub I've had since leaving NYC! Not sure about the one on Telegraph in Redford but guessing the sandwiches are comparable. We both had the 8 & 2 - one on a hard roll, one on a soft roll - both with extra banana peppers. Mamma Mia!! All meats shaved with love by local lovable gals. Everyone here is so nice and all customers seemed patient, despite the fact the we stopped in during lunch rush. Neither of us could finish our entire sandwiches. Fantabulous! read more

Still some of the best subs around . Stopped in today it's been a few years since I had been in , came for lunch got the 8 meat heckuva deal for 8.50 plenty of cold colds and made fast . My only complaint if I had one is that the smoked turkey they put on it over powered the rest of the meat but still enjoyed every last bite read more

This has been on my bucket list for a long time and I finally made it there today. Wow! It's the real deal! A line around the store but it moved quickly with five ladies making subs at the deli counter. I got an 8/2 on a hard roll; that's eight layers of meat and two layers of cheese. I may have eaten too much...but it was so good. The meats are sliced thin and piled high. The roll was great. For $8.50, this is a great value. Friendly people and a cool vibe. Definitely one of the best subs in the Detroit area. read more

Towards the rear, there are racks of spices, a very small frozen food section (one freezer) and some produce. I'm guessing they don't actually sell any of the produce - it's probably just there as storage until they cook everything? The real magic of the store is in the back, where there's a small counter serving all sorts of delicious goodies. On a Saturday for lunch, there was a steady stream of customers picking up orders and eating. Just be aware that this is a family owned establishment that takes time to prepare food - lunch was supposed to start at 11:30AM, but they didn't have most of the menu ready until around 12:30PM. For people who are less patient, there is a prepared food counter with various meats and stews and a display with some fried foods. We opted for a couple of items: Fritura Mixta ($18.50) - Wow, this is a giant plate of fried meat and tostones. Deep fried beef, pork, chicken, longanisa, each one seasoned and drained well. Not greasy or oily at all. This is seriously a meat overload, in retrospect, we should have ordered a couple of additional sides because, to be honest, we aren't huge meat eaters. Still delicious. It took about 20 minutes to come out because everything was fried fresh. Cheese Bollitos ($2.50) - Think of a fried mashed potato croquette with a slightly different yucca flavor profile. These fried pastries aren't fried to order - instead they are probably fried in the morning and stuck in a heated display cabinet until they are ordered. They don't have the best crisp exterior and aren't exactly piping hot, but they are still good. Chicken and Cheese Empanada ($3) - These were definitely differently shaped vs. other empanadas I've had. Quite a long half moon filled with well seasoned chicken and rich cheese. Similar to the bollitos, these are not fried to order. We went back a couple of weeks later for some of the items on the dinner menu (only available after 5PM) that aren't served during lunch. It took around 25 minutes this time for the food to come out. Chimi de Pierna ($13) - This sandwich consisted of pulled pork, red cabbage, onions, and tomato on a super pillowy bun. The ingredients were heavily seasoned with a sweet and somewhat vinegery sauce that was quite similar to a bbq sauce. Be careful eating this one - since the bun is so soft, the ingredients start spilling out with every bite. Mofongo ($20) - Super garlicky, pretty classic mofongo mashed with chicharrones. Our meat of choice was additional chicharrones - super well fried with a great crisp and chewy fat. It came with two small containers of sauce that was not a normal mojo de ajo. It was limey, porky, very fresh, and paired perfectly with the carbs and proteins. I would definitely get this again. As a side note - they charge a 4% credit card fee. La Bodego is a great addition to the area. Definitely stop by to get some good Dominican food!
