Tried Gonella's for the first time and went with the smoked turkey sandwich, fully loaded. The ingredients were super fresh and the turkey had nice flavor, but overall it didn't leave a lasting impression. Even the sauce didn't pop like I hoped. That said, it's a good quality sandwich and a full meal (chips + water) for just $10.76... can't be mad at that.

Faygo pop (rock and rye), Better made potato chips (Detroit staples)...... $10 - 18-layer sub..... Best combination in town!!!!!

This is the place you wanna go if you want a good Italian sub without tearing a hole in your pockets...... The place is clean and the workers are always helping.... I try to make it here at least once a month....

Amazing! Incredible! 14-layers of deli meats and cheese on a soft roll, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and dressing.

Over the past 15 months, during COVID, my food preferences have altered. I have had more pizza over these months than in the past decade. I discovered that I really love almond croissants. And I will go out of my way for a good Italian sub. I've been to the Gonella's near my work but the only time I pass this location is when I have to take a detour onto Telegraph. I note the location but it is too far from work or home, generally, to consider it for lunch. Today, though, the stars were aligned and I was able to pull in to the small lot during lunch. Yay! The store is quite large. At the center is a self-serve olive bar with all kinds of brined goodies. Against one wall are shelves filled with chips and popcorn. Perpendicular to that wall is a huge refrigerated wall of drinks and colas. I love different flavored pop but today, I was focused on my mission, the famed Italian sub. Pricing is based on the number of layers of deli meats and cheese. I went with the 14 layers, on a soft roll, with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and Italian dressing. By the time I got home, the dressing had soaked through the wrapper, so I knew my sub would be good. I was so not disappointed. The sandwich was loaded with layer after layer of salami, mortadella, ham, and cheese. For $10, I felt that I received a lot of value. Service was quick and friendly. Before I could scope out the deli case of yummy-looking salads, my sandwich was done. The staff must have wizard-like sandwich-making skills.

One of the best places in all of Southeast Michigan for an Italian Sub. You order by how many layers of meat and cheese you want on choice of bun, the 8 & 2 on a hard roll being our favorite ! When I worked in the area Gonella's was tops on our list for lunch. Now whenever in the area...still tops on our list !

It's a Market! I had no idea as I'm just ordering away haha. They were very polite in taking my order, I was surprised they were a small Italian market as I had always thought they were a small sub shop and the website is horrible at displaying or showing anything the actual store has to offer. The food was superb though! Excellent bread and I will be back!

Home of the Famous 18 & 3 Italian Subs, I get my on Soft roll. Just right for 2 hungry folks. Still the Famous Oakwood Bakery Buns, they stayed open just for a few wholesale customers. Alcamos Dearborn owners retired, they really should buy the place. They sold over double the subs each day of the 2 combined Gonellas locations for 65 year's. The perfect location for another shop Michigan and Schaefer comes with thousands of regular customers, yeah they just don't get it. #gonellasfoods #gonellas #gonellassubs @originalgonellas #italiansub #bigsubs #detroitclassic #downriverfriendseat

The food was amazing and the service was quick and efficient. The ambiance is a great mom n pop spot. Definitely gonna be back.

12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese. $8.00 and worth every penny.

The restaurant itself was clean, calm, and welcoming, and the food coming out of the kitchen looked really good. They do offer gluten-free buns, which was exciting to see at first. When I asked about the meats though, the person at the counter let me know that their meat options aren't gluten-free. Since I have Celiac disease, that meant I wasn't able to order anything. I did appreciate how straightforward and accommodating the staff were about it. They answered my questions without hesitation, which is always helpful when navigating gluten-free dining. Even though I couldn't eat there, the place looked well run and the atmosphere was nice. I'd still recommend it if gluten isn't a concern.

My kid had a hot pastrami sandwich. Let me start by saying that my sandwich was not only perfect, but it was massive. Expensive? Yes. But I more than got what I paid for. This felt like it was right around a pound of meat absolutely massive, it's 7 hours later and I am not even close to hungry. Great value here! Staff is friendly too. Basic interior, nothing fancy here. But the good is great. I highly suggest you order at the counter, not the kiosk, they have a ton of stuff not on the menu on the kiosk! J.Ja

The wall of plastic you order through is a bit off putting. I wanted to get the pastrami but I had no idea that was build your own pick. I should have gotten the corned beef. The pastrami was delicious I just don't think I chose the right toppings. Served with crispy deli pickles. I also ordered the deviled eggs but was sad to see them tossed in the bag upside down; very messy and hard to eat they had a nice sweet flavor. The main problem is the cleanliness or lack thereof. It could use a deep deep cleaning. Also there are people hustling to get your dollars. A guy was selling one stick of incense for $5. Not sure if I will go back but I might want to try the corned beef egg rolls.

We could do a lot better, but, who can't, right. While we were there, her sister called her to ask what she wanted for dinner (we're VERY close to our doctor ). It sounded so good, we asked where and what she was getting. The rest was kismet. If sunshine was a sandwich it would come from Mr. Corned Beef! To begin with, the place was amazingly clean. I didn't expect otherwise. But at 5:00 in the afternoon, I didn't know what to expect. It rarely strikes me how clean a place can the way this one struck me. My reviews will always begin with the service. Because, if the service isn't good, no matter how well prepared, the food will not be good. Shaniqua was fabulous at "hello". I explained to her that we were sent by my doctor with orders to just order "the little" corned beef. Shaniqua explained the sizes, and welllllll. Don't tell the doctor. When I finished ordering, Shaniqua informed me that when I come again, they have soul food dinners, buy one, get one free. Wait, what? (Shaniqua, why didn't you lead with that ). It only took 20 minutes. Loaded with bags of oh-my-god smells from heaven, what would normally had been a 20- minute ride to home, took 5! So, unless you're okay with sharing, the doctor was right ... get the little corned beef. Two bites of my PLAIN corned beef on rye, and I'm ready for nappy time. This is the most tender, lean corned beef. (I absolutely abhor fat.) The two dinners I got for us for tomorrow. Yeah right. Somebody's grandma is back there peeling yams and cleaning greens. A welfare check might be in order. Pimp is "double-fisting" his corned beef with Russian dressing on onion roll. I asked him how it was. He growled like the dogs do when you get too close to them gnawing on a big bone. If I would take anything away from the experience, I'd snip off the tips of two of the points of the fifth star: 1) Parking (none) 2) No dine in. (Probably due to parking, LOL) Thanks Dr. T. We can't wait to get a refill on this prescription. (Note to the extra health conscious: I am an "in-control" diabetic who has successfully lost over 60 pounds and have kept it off. Success is not about what you're offered, but the choices you make.)
