Back home and in my old neighborhood so I thought why not try the restaurants I've grown up eating at. This location of Bread Basket is one of them. My best friend and I used to ride our bikes here to grab a corned beef on a Kaiser roll. Well, one thing I can say. I can no longer just recycle cans to pay for my sandwich. The prices have definitely increased, but I guess that's par for the course. I also didn't get a sandwich once I saw they had the egg rolls on the menu. Glad I did. While they weren't anything to necessarily write home about, they went very well with my salad for lunch. They were crunchy and the corned beef inside was quite tender, however the meat lacked flavor and I didn't care for it being served with sauce. Would love a bold mustard type sauce. Will ask if that's available next time. Gonna have to go back for the sandwich. Just to see if it brings me back to my teenage years. Service was quick and professional. No complaints. read more

We stopped in the Bread Basket, deli yesterday, Wed, May 27. My older brother recommended the place, and we were pretty hungry, so we stopped in for an early dinner. He was telling me the sandwiches are stacked 4 to 5 inches high. I didn't believe him, but when I saw them I became a believer. We ordered their club sandwich. I needed a ruler to measure how high the thing was it was stacked high with fresh lettuce, and tomato thing was stacked so high that I had to break it apart and I asked the Cook for an extra slice of bread. He brought it out right away didn't charge me anymore. If you're hungry, I mean really hungry, the bread basket deli is an awesome place to eat. The only reason why I give them 4 stars instead of 5 stars is I live in Seattle Washington and they don't have this restaurant out there. I sure hope to see him out there sometime soon, but if not, I will be back to visit. read more

Finally tried this little Deli! It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the sandwiches are delicious and very filling. I got number 20, which is turkey, coleslaw and thousand Island dressing. My mom got corned beef with mustard. We both got the four oz size and they were more than enough. They both come with two different kinds of pickles. I'll definitely be back. Love love love this place! I've been coming here since the late 1990's and I moved away and every time I'm back in Michigan I always have to go here! I always get The United (which consist of corned beef, pastrami, on toasted marbled rye bread with Swiss cheese, thousand island dressing, and Cole slaw! Soo good oh and don't forget the kosher pickle. The service has always been the same great, welcoming and speedy. I love this place because it brings back fond memories of me and my BFF going here after classes at The University of Detroit Mercy! What a difference a few weeks make I had the pastrami on rye as in my previous review a big mistake this time The pastrami I had on 05/08 /24 was straight-up dry cardboard each slice of meat I guess that's what it was dry as you know what could not eat it the texture of the meat was not normal this dog mess was TRASH. Stopped at "The Original" Bread Basket Deli (as opposed to "the Bread Basket Deli chain restaurants," according to their web site) recently for the first time in a number of years. The place has gone through some dramatic changes, most (sorry to say) not for the better. Back in the day, Bread Basket was a popular, busy spot with ample table seating and wait staff. Now, it has gone down to a small number of tables, and no wait staff. Instead, orders are placed with a very friendly employee behind a plexiglass wall. Instead of excellent dill pickles and condiments brought to the table, you will need to ask for any condiment (such as mustard) that you require, and a meager, not great, pickle slice accompanies the meal. Prices have shot up through the roof: a 4 oz. (small) pastrami sandwich, which I ordered, will set you back $12.79. If you want it lean, add another $1.50 (not really needed - mine was lean enough). Onion or Kaiser rolls are also available - for an extra 75 cents. I ordered a side of cole slaw, and that cost $3 for a half pint, $2.25 for a "mini (not sure which one we got, but it was a decently-sized portion)" - quite tasty. No argument about the taste of the food: the pastrami was decent quality and an adequate size. The co-diner got the corned beef, and was satisfied with the taste. Overall, alas, the atmosphere was sufficiently oppressive (and depressing) that the dining experience was greatly diminished. Not only has the ambiance deteriorated, the menu has added a "you buy - we fry" section, featuring such items as egg rolls, wing dings, and chicken strips (not exactly standard deli fare), sold in various quantities, with an extra charge (ranging from $1 to $4) for frying. Frankly, it would be better if the "frying" charge were just incorporated into the overall price. I am quite sure that anyone stopping in to pick up a meal would not expect to take their chicken strips home and deep-fry them themselves. The menu had boxes prominently proclaiming that the establishment accepts EBT in so many places as to be impossible to ignore. Once would probably have been enough. Someone forced to rely on public assistance for their food may wish to consider whether a $17.99 sandwich was a wise allocation of their resources. In sum, the 2 star rating for this restaurant may be mostly due to a combination of nostalgia, sympathy for the very nice staff, and less due to actual merit. Still, this Yelper can only wish the management and staff well. read more

That is egregious!!!!! Especially for carry out and the store is very ill kept. When I pulled up, I couldn't believe how rundown the entire strip mall looks. This place is a legend. This is The original Bread Basket Deli- A visit there recently did not disappoint as far as food. The corned be byef was good and the bread was delicious. I dined-in. I find when food is packed to go the temperature of the food when wrapped, may cause steam to form which makes mushy Sammy's and soggy fries. Most food wrapped to- go (except soup) loses something. YOU MUST ORDER when you walk in. (There are lots of booths but no wait staff.) The menu is enormous and you can't stand there too long reading it because there's not much standing room near register. The deli looks exactly as it did in the '90s, NOTHING remodeled. The ambience of this classic 'Jewish deli' is gone. Wasted. The waitresses were sassy but efficient. The diners, most of them regulars, were part of the charm . Everyone knew everyone---it seemed--and people put up with the sass and the long wait. Why?.... because: THE FOOD. Extremely Rude and Arrogant, Horrible First Impression!!! Just (10/15/21 at 12:40pm) called to place a carry out order and the woman who answered the phone was very unprofessional. I started giving my order which consisted of 2 Eggrolls and a Roast Beef Brisket Sandwich. I asked if they came with a Side to which she said no. I asked if i could add a side of the mashed potatoes and was told they weren't serving them this week. I then asked if i could have a side of Fries instead. The woman asked what did i want on my sandwich, i stated whatever comes on it normally. She then raised her voice and said 'I need you to tell me what you want, we have a ton of options' ..... ok. I then asked what were the options and she told me to check their menu online. I explained that i have never ordered from here before and that i was looking at the menu while on the phone with her but i did not see any topping options besides Lettuce to be added to the Sandwiches. I'm very biased when it comes to deli as my family runs one in the Detroit area but I also love comparing and the bread basket is very similar in flavor. The location is not the greatest and you definitely do not come here for the ambience, it's a bit of a hole in the wall. But the food is good! I ordered a regular(4 ounces of meat) corned beef and turkey grilled sandwich on rye with cole slaw, sauerkraut, Swiss and Russian dressing. The meat was lean but tender. There's nothing like a grilled Rueben! And the regular size is more than enough!! Unless you have an extra larger appetite- then they have the large which is 9 ounces of meat. The pickles are also delicious- nice and crunchy! I have to admit the fries were mediocre, frozen for sure. I like mine fresh cut with a bit of a crunch on the outside. I'd say maybe skip the fries and get some chips. Then I washed it down with a can of Detroit made Vernors. They also have Dr. Browns soda which is always a nice treat. Got a Rueben to go at the urge of a friend: highly recommended! I did have them substitute spicy mustard as I am not a fan of the sauce they use standard. Don't expect some big fancy place.
