I typically go to the Bread Basket on Middlebelt, but I was in the area and decided to try this location. This time, I went with the BB Special, thinly sliced corned beef, Swiss cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce on an onion roll. There is also Russian dressing on the sandwich, but there was so little of it, that it was barely discernable. That might explain why there were so many orders before mine that included Russian dressing on the side. The corned beef was delicious, piled high, and well supported with the onion roll (instead of rye, for example). It was excellent with the Faygo grape soda that was truly a treat. The sandwich was so huge that I only needed to have half, saving the other part for the next day. I loved the well-spiced meat and felt that the onion roll was perfect to hold up to the large portion of meat. The only drawback is the sandwich pick-up process. Customers who place their order in person have to wait elsewhere (outside, car) to see when their order is placed at the window before re-entering the restaurant to pick up their order. Otherwise, there would be too many customers in the tiny, enclosed space given that the restaurant is closed for dine-in. Service was fine. read more

This store has come back from the dead. I stopped going to this one years ago cause of everything. They wouldn't let you in. Their attitude was bad. The food wasn't as good as Livonia or Downriver. Today was a fluke and I'm glad it happened. The manager shocked me by inviting me in the store. Offered me some soup samples. The chicken noodle soup was so good I wished I was sick! The tomato bisque was good, but I'm not a bisque dude. Wouldn't say no, though. I went old school and got my Reuben with extra Swiss. Got the United Meat (original size) which was enough for two. The meat combo of corned beef and pastrami was great, but I liked the pastrami better (so flavorful and slightly fatty). The onion bun was also soft, pillowy and wonderful, and the Swiss cheese worked super well with the meat as well. I'm so curious to try their pound-it size; I believe I can finish it myself :) We were gonna dine it but it was too bad they didn't have enough staff to open the restaurant. I went to bread basket about 10 years ago, and it was great. It was the first alternative to Lou's deli that I would be happy about. So we went there today and we ordered two sandwiches and we tried their corned beef egg rolls for some reason. I ordered the bread basket sandwiches which is like a dinty Moore but with Swiss cheese. I ordered the original size sandwiches and I was a little disappointed. The last time I went here the sandwich was stacked so high I could barely bite it, and the meat was very tender and thinly sliced. There was a lot of flavor from the Russian dressing and the tomatoes. This time I could barely taste the sauce the meat was a little salty and a little bit more tough and the bread was tasted old and stale. It was falling apart. The corned beef egg rolls were actually good crunchy on the outside the meat was tender and not too salty. It's amazing you go there mainly for corned beef sandwiches but then the egg rolls are better. Anyway someone actually told me that Bread Basket went downhill over the last few years but I didn't believe it so I wanted to verify for myself and guess what they were correct. I wouldn't count them out as they have I believe a locations around Detroit area so maybe they might take customer service and get back on track or maybe the next time I visit Detroit they'll be gone like many other businesses who don't care about customers or their reputation. Sandwich was good, servicing was not. They closed at 8, we entered at 7:40. They were clearly pissed that we came in so close to closing and made it known. I visited on 5/9/25 and the experience is just not as good as it used to be. The corned beef is dry. The customer service is not that great. These sandwiches are huge and awesome. Everything always tastes really fresh, and although they're known for corned beef, I love their turkey reuben. We've also gotten other fried items here, and they're not my favorite - the fries are soggy and unseasoned. In my opinion, you can skip all those and just order the larger sandwiches; they're awesome. Service is always fast and friendly - call ahead is very convenient. Ordered 2 lunch specials it's a small sandwich you pick the meat chips and a pop. The chips and pop were what we ate since both sandwiches were pastrami and so fatty unable to eat. One of the best places for genuine Jewish corned beef and pastrami; there aren't many locally. Both times I've gotten pastrami with Russian dressing and cheese on rye. My friend has ordered the corned beef sandwich and LOVES it. AWESOME! I wish I had taken photos but didn't think of it until I had already inhaled most of this delicious sandwich. Of all the "Bread Basket" delis in the Detroit area, this is by far the best. My friend Dan got the corned beef with russian dressing and cole slaw (look for number 17 and a half, wet and wild, on the menu). It was huge and he had enough left over to be both overly satisfied AND to give the dog a special treat. I got the matza ball soup which was a veggie "chicken" broth with a huge ball. It was hot and tasty. I also got the cole slaw, which was highly recommended by the counterperson (justifiably so!). It was cruchy, freshly made, and had just enough dressing but not too much. They also have Dr. Brown's soda's here (although they don't carry the Cel-Rey flavor, which is my favorite). The staff are friendly and will happily give you extras (bread for your soup/salad, half-sour pickles, etc). I probably won't come to this place if my coworker didn't recommend this place to us. It looks very small from the outside, but the food is a lot more impressive than how it looks like. I ordered a Reuben sandwich with corn beef in it. The beef is amazing! Very juicy, tender and pretty much just perfect. The portion is big. I am a fan of Bread Basket, although this location does not get the ratings the Livonia location does. This is a bigger restaurant than the Middlebelt Plymouth Rd location, and has more room to sit. The flavor and quality is the same as the other one, but its just missing something. I do not enjoy going anywhere that requires bullet proof glass,and if it requires a guard I say no way (unless of course its a bank). I read a review about a different place where the reviewer said "it has a rent-a-cop guarding the cars", really do we think think this is a positive??? I don't really need to go to a place that requires a guard. Call me a snob that way! This place does not have a guard, but it still has a very real reminder that "we are afraid of getting robbed", so whatever put that fear in them, well...that level of security simply does not extend to the customers. So for this I bump it down a couple notches. Bottom line, if you are a risk taker and like to live on the edge, and like great corned beef and other great deli delights, then here ya go. read more

The ladies working are very friendly and courteous. The sandwich.......well I have to say it was huge. However, it tasted salty to me and was kind of fatty. The slaw on it was ok but the accompanying pickle was more like a tasteless, flabby cucumber. I generally drive into Detroit to Hygrade Deli for my corned beef sandwiches but was feeling lazy today. I went here for lunch a little while ago with some people from work. The place definitely fits the definition of a dive. It's old and needs to be updated a lot, but I didn't come here for the ambiance. I have to admit, I was a bit tired. After a week of getting called a couple times every night, I forgot to make lunch and just wanted something to eat. I don't know how much a single sandwich costs, but a corned beef with slaw, fries, and a can of Faygo cost me $14 with change. Looking at the place, you'd expect to pay half that. This is my local Bread Basket (my original review is for the Middlebelt location). When my fiancé and I moved into our house, and we noticed that Bread Basket was two blocks away, we knew it was going to be dangerous. Yes, it's a little pricey, but for a great, delicious sandwich, it's worth it. Get the corned beef. The pastrami is great, too, but the corned beef is the real star. I love the 17 1/2, or the 18 1/2, cause I am all about the meat, swiss, coleslaw, and russian dressing combo. The service is friendly and quick, cause this is a lesser trafficked location!
