I hadn't been here since 2010 and the reputation still stands in Dearborn, so I thought I'd give it another try. I was still like "meh". Their sandwiches are crazy-expensive, especially for the quality of the turkey. It was the slimy, smooth kind, not the more dry, you-can-see-the-grain-and-taste-the-quality kind. I got turkey and cheddar and it was $15, plus adding a drink and chips was $3 more. Hubband got the turkey and ham sandwich and said the ham was excellent but had the same gripe about the low quality turkey as me. Are they big, yes? Would I rather have less meat but it be much higher quality for the same price? Also yes. Decor hasn't changed in the almost 15 years since I visited. It's clean enough but still incredibly over-crowded with too many tables and chairs. Service was friendly. Honestly, this is just so underwhelming that I'm incredibly surprised that people are excited to drop $15 on a mediocre sandwich. Under new owner, ordered the half corn beef and half pastrami, got 1/4 of usual amount of meat, may have been a mistake, since looked like pastrami was missing. This is definitely a great place to go for some really good Jewish deli food! It's very small but cute. They do have some patio seating, too. Service was fast and friendly. The food here is really good, nice size portions and priced lower than I would have expected. I got the Rachel, AKA Carol's Temptation, and local friend, Yelper Amy B, got the Uncle Louie's BBQie, a brisket sandwich. I don't remember how I first heard about Mati's, but I've had it bookmarked for years. Every time I'm in Dearborn as of late, I'm doing something else and don't have the time to stop in and check it out, or it's closed because they aren't currently open on the weekends. In a city that isn't known for it's Deli's, this place was a pleasant surprise. Today, I had the pleasure of meeting fellow yelper and extraordinaire, Mike G from Columbus here for a quick bite. Normally, we'd be hitting up Ford's garage, but I really wanted this place! I noticed online that the insides a tad small for my liking, and despite that, I really had a good time here. I went with the Uncle Louie's BBQie sandwich because I'm in a long standing, loving relationship with anything brisket. Mike, on the other hand does not eat red meat, so he went with something even fancier than moi, an got a chicken sandwich. While the tables here are very tiny, as is the restaurant, we both had a really good meal and enjoyed our time together. When we got there, it was awfully quiet for a Monday, but as we sat through our meal, more people started piling in. Doctors, automotive workers, retired people, families. Just a nice slice of people to see coming in for a quick bite. For drinks, they do have fountain pop and it's free refills. The cups are small but the staff here is really friendly, which I appreciate. The only complaint that I had, is the timing of how our food came out. I got mine first, but then it took Mike's meal much longer to arrive despite others ahead of him getting their orders before. He still got his food, but I do notice and I'm not sure what the hold up was. No issue or problem, just a minor annoyance because we love Mike G! Overall, it was worth trying and I'm glad we did. Food was spot on, and the portions were good for the price. (Deli's can be finicky about some menu items and charge another zillion dollars for extra sauces, napkins or anything they want because they can and I'm glad they do not do that here.) Mati's Deli is a very old fashioned sandwich joint; the interior looks like something you would see in the 80s. They do churn out some good sandwiches but just be aware, prices have gone up by something like 50% over the last couple of years. Reuben ($14.99) - This is quite a large sandwich piled up with corned beef and sauerkraut. If you get it with chips and a drink (which I think was something like $3 extra), it could probably last for two meals. There is a pretty small amount of Russian dressing on top - the sandwich probably needs double the dressing to make it great. There's a slice of unmelted swiss cheese in the center. Everything is on perfectly toasted rye. This is just personal preference, but I wish the entire sandwich were heated so that the cheese could melt. The sandwich came with a standard pickle wedge. I know they are totally different, but there are several Italian delis nearby where you can get multiple sandwiches for the price of one here. I am a door dasher and as I was picking my customers food up I watched one of the workers pick up RAW MEAT and package it up and not wearing gloves nor did she wash her hands before packing another customer food and when I questioned her about it the other two employees started arguing with me about it. Mati's deli is a easily the best deli in Dearborn. It has a fun, nostalgic, vintage atmosphere. my "go-to" sandwich shop for 5 years. Even after the passing of the the beloved owner Lou, his family has carried on his work and is continuing to put out a high quality product. Great service and very friendly staff The Chili is a no brainer here. It goes great with every sandwich. Tip: ask for a piece of rye to dip in the chili, amazing! The best rye bread. I've also heard the broccoli soup is very good though I just stick with the chili. Great array of sandwiches as you'd expect from a good deli. Good rueben. Today I was looking for an old fashioned Deli but I was in the area of dearborn. So I looked up this place and decide to try it out. First let's say that I was kind of disappointed because I couldn't make the sandwich the way I wanted it. I have never been to a place where I can't get a a corned beef mixed with whatever meat I like even if I have to pay more for it. She absolutely said that we don't make a sandwich with corned beef and roast beef. But I see they had combo sandwiches with roast beef and other meats along with the corned beef. So I definitely cannot understand why I couldn't get it that way but that's just the beginning. The waitress was ruled unfriendly and not up for you to ask her many questions as this was my first time there. I'm not sure if it was because there weren't customers that look like me or was she just having a bad day. Also another customer came in of a different descent than mine and he was treated rudely as well and abrupt. The food I received was just okay so needless to say, I have no need to return. It's kind of hard to find the old fashioned delis from back in the day where your corned beef will sliced with marbling and fat and you can see the stacks of meat. I was craving a thick deli sandwich, a Reuben to be specific, and my friend suggested one of her favorite places, Mati's Deli. We came right before the lunch rush but despite that, there was still a long wait and significant congestion (and chaos) at the order counter. The deli featured old-fashioned flooring, a wrap-around counter with bolted-down stools and a number of small tables. By the time we finally placed our order, a corner table opened up. As a restaurant, it would be considered small but as a deli, it is quite sizable, and during warmer months, outdoor seating is available. I ended up with the Ellen's Choice, a corned beef sandwich topped with nutty Swiss cheese and yummy coleslaw on soft but crusty bread. The corned beef was flavorful with just the right amount of fat; I had planned on having only half but I could not resist and ended up gobbling up the entire thing in one sitting. Nine hours later, I am still full and cannot even contemplate dinner. The cheesecake brownie was a disappointment, though. It was dense and dry and the cheesecake filling was oddly gummy. My friend recommends the cookies here and the New York-styled cheesecake looked amazing. The next time, I plan to order the same sandwich - why mess with a good thing? Mati's is a true Dearborn gem. I've been coming here since probably 1992 or 1993 and the sandwiches are still just as huge and delicious as they were back then! In addition to great food, this place has plenty of old-school restaurant charm to it. From the painted tile exterior, old tile floor, 1930's swivel chairs along the back lunch counter, to the big mural of the famous Nighthawks painting greeting you near the register, its just an old-time classic eating experience. The people are also great. Lou and his staff are always polite, friendly, and if you're able to catch them at a time when they aren't totally swamped with customers, fun to talk with as well. There have been quite a few new sandwiches added over the years, and I regret to say that I haven't given them all a try yet. But if I had to recommend my top favorites, they would have to be the Prime Time, Goodbye Charlie, Reuben, or the Hank's Delight. It's hard to go wrong with any of those. Their soups are also very good, especially their chicken noodle with the matzo ball extra. And definitely don't forget to try one of their amazing chocolate and cream cheese brownies for dessert. They've made them pretty much exactly the same for the 30 or so years I've been a customer, and once you try one you'll see why. What else can I say? I just love this place! I went to this place a year or two ago, and unless I turned into a giant in that time, these sandwiches have definitely gotten smaller. A LOT smaller. When I got a brisket sandwich there a while back, I could barely eat half and had to save the rest for later. It was a beast! Now, the same sandwich was placed in between very cheap looking white bread, just a few layers of meat, all still very tasty but where's the beef?! The pickle it came with was almost bigger than the sandwich. So I ate it on a picnic table in the sun, but I can't say I was exactly filled with joy. Nor was my stomach full either, and I had to eat half of my mother's because she was so upset she gave up on the sandwich period. And didn't even touch the pickle. My family loves this place because it's right down the street from our house. Their ruebens are a pretty good alternative if you don't feel like driving to Hygrade's. Their cream of broccoli soup is also delicious. The only reason I'm giving them 3 stars is because today I placed an order online. I went in and told the woman at the front (she was very friendly) I was picking up an order under my name. I guess I should've told her it was an online order. Anyways, she asked if it was the big order. I said it's three ruebens and two soups, so I guess it was. She asked me what drinks I wanted, and I told her I didn't order any drinks. Some guy walked up to the front and said I ordered combos and said I'd choose what I wanted when I got there. I was confused so I just said oh while I went to pull up my receipt. The guy then proceeded to tell the women "just give her whatever, she doesn't know what she's doing." I showed the woman my receipt and she realized it was an online order and gave me my right order. Tasty sandwiches! We ordered the pastrami sandwich and a roast beef sandwich. We found both to be very tasty. So tasty in fact, we ordered another sandwich to take on the plane before our flight home back to sunny and warm San Diego. We found the meats to be tasty. The bread was moist. Service was good and friendly. We went around 4 pm so there was no line. The roast beef is medium rare and we found it to be really juicy. We love roast beef medium rare.
