    decorated for Valentine's day

I Couldn't decide between two different polish cafes... there are two within a block of each each other. Reddit helped me elect this , mostly for the ambience. It's a cute basement bar restaurant. It's got a familiar family vibe. The service is impeccable, and the food was good. The cabbage rolls could've been a little more seasoned inside, but the dill pickle soup is something you just have to try.

Boiled Mixed Pierogi, included 2 Potato & Cheese, 2 Kraut, 2 Sweet Cheese. Vegetarian if boiled (not fried)

The staff was friendly and accommodating. The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered the mixed pierogi, which included 2 Potato & Cheese, 2 Kraut, 2 Sweet Cheese. All 3 flavors were delicious, but I highly recommend the Kraut with a side of sour cream! We also got them boiled, as opposed to fried, so they were vegetarian. (Usually they are fried in lard.)

Very good polish food. I had potato and cheddar pierogis with sour cream. Also order a strawberry and cherry crepe (one of each). All were good though oily. The crepes were your standard pie fillings. Others dining with me enjoyed the polish dinner plate with beet soup. The bread, cracker, breadstick basket on table was enjoyed. The breadsticks brought back childhood memories. IYKYK. We loved the red and white lights decorating the ceiling and ornament garland. Not sure if another access is available but restaurant is located downstairs.

Have grown up going here and will keep coming back because of the excellent service, fantastic traditional dishes, and lovely atmosphere. This place really makes me feel holly jolly - pictured are my favs, which is the mushroom soup and Zywiec!

If you are in the mood for polish food, this is the place to go. The dill pickle soup is outstanding and honestly all of their food is so delicious. Reminds me of growing up, our grandma cooked a lot of these same recipes.

Leisurely dinner & drinks on outdoor patio. It is filled with totally blooming flowers. Newer waitress, hustled like crazy. 3 of us shared a bunch of different food. Everything tasted great. Dill pickle soup, variety of pierogis , chop & city chicken dinner along with a Hungarian pancake.

Potato pancakes with sour cream and applesauce, so good!

So excited to visit the oldest Polish restaurant in Hamtrammack, maybe even in Michigan? First, it's located down a flight of stairs, and cash only if spending less than $50, so you have been forewarned. We got the loveliest surprise when we pushed through the door...the entire restaurant was decorated to the nines for Valentine's Day, which would be the following day. Full on red and pink everywhere, lights, decor, tablecloths, everything. Greeted and told to seat ourselves, so we picked a place away from the door, since my dad gets cold easy. Bread and cracker basket delivered quickly with menus. Menu full of lovely Polish dishes, so much to choose from. Three of us had soup with our meals, dill pickle, beet, and mushroom. We each tried the others and we were all amazed at how good they all were. Seriously good, like wish I could take a quart of each home! My hubby had the cucumber, dill and sour cream salad, and loved it. I'm not a fan usually, but I loved it too. Dad had the smoked kielbasa sandwich with horseradish, very good. Hubby had the schnitzel sandwich with a side of gravy, really tasty! Mom had the stuffed cabbage dinner, and while she thought it was a bit bland, my hubby and I absolutely loved her stuffed cabbage. Polish doesn't have sauerkraut in it, so if you're use to having it that way, you might not appreciate the Polish version. I just loved it! I had the Plaski, traditional potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream. I'd been craving this and was so happy with my choice. Hot and crispy, they hit the spot! We all had hot coffee to drink, since it was a cold winter day, and it was excellent flavorful coffee. Our server was friendly and helpful, making our visit even better. Since we'd bought paczkis from a bakery before our meal, we skipped dessert, but next time, we're getting it. Such a great introduction to Hamtrammack, it has been on my bucket list for years. Can't wait to come back!

I really want to give Polish Village Cafe more than 3 stars but I just wasn't impressed. The only thing that was exceptional was the dill pickle soup. So tasty with potatoes and a light dill flavor. I'd like a big bowl right now. Besides the soup, nothing was very impressive including the atmosphere. The cafe is downstairs - not sure what's upstairs - and seating is limited. It's also dark and crowded. In fact, we were seated by the door and due to continual coming and going of people, all 5 of us were so cold. A suggestion would be to have someone take names before the door. Rather, people stood in the doorway with it open. Brrrrr I also wasn't thrilled about the perogies or the potato pancakes (half and half plate). The potato pancakes were greasy and reminded me of a hashbrown patty. They were better with applesauce but they were still just alright. The perogies weren't very warm or flavorful. If I visit here again, dill pickle soup would be a must but otherwise I'd try some different food items.

With Polonia next door it's the battle of the pierogies! While Anthony Bourdain did indeed go to Polonia and sang its praises legend has it Polish Village Café was tapped first but with the narrow stairs leading to the cellar/basement level they were not able to get their filming equipment down there. To summarize my point of the dueling pierogies story my friends is this: Don't miss out on Polish Village Café! Try both places and you will get an accurate comparison of Polish cuisine. Similar yet different. I want to say the 4 of us ladies got phenomenal service from Alexis. She made great suggestions, was prompt, and was able to make a few modifications for my pickier friends. We started with the soup. Dill pickle for my friends and beet for me. This was some of the best beet soup I've ever had. My Polish babcia would make her beet soup and thicken it with sour cream. Other than my grandma I've never had a thickened and creamy beet soup until here. Dill pickle soup was also great with a tangy but not overpowering pickle taste. Wanting to sample a variety and also wanting leftovers I went with the pick 3 meat plate (city chicken, chicken livers, and fresh Polish sausage). Wow talk about a menagerie of food. The sausage alone was enough to feed 2-3 people. They put a beer gravy over the top which is something I've never had but it works. Chicken livers were deep-fried and slightly on the salty side but dipping them in the extra beer gravy proved to be a wise choice. City chicken was just as I remembered from before. Whatever breading they use somehow manages to stay in place but you still get the tender juicy flavor from the pork and veal that shines through. All four of us had enough food left over for lunch the next day. Prices are more than reasonable for the amount and quality of food you get. I'm excited to be living in the Detroit area again and will be able to satisfy my Polish food cravings whenever the urge hits!

Have to get a polish beer!
