Checked out The Balkan House in Ferndale this past weekend and it is a must try! They serve authentic Bosnian & Eastern European fare, and there's something for everyone! The service was super speedy and very friendly! I don't often share a review after only trying one thing, but the Döner Kebab is that good, I can't not share it!! This thing is one of the best bites I've had so far this year! The beef & lamb mix is tender and seasoned perfectly; the bread is unlike any that I've had before; it's like a lighter and slightly more soft/fluffed version of pita, but it holds up perfectly to allow you to eat it without breaking apart. I could eat it by itself! The veggies and Döner sauce top it off to give you the perfectly balanced bite & make you want to go back for more! Getting a side of the spicy sauce is a great call too! We walked to the counter and just as we got to the register the young lady working the counter took a personal phone call. She walked never greeted us or said anything acknowledging our presence. She just walked out of the restaurant on to the street and took her call. If this was restaurant related wouldn't she take the order over the phone In front of us? No she walked outside so whoever was cooking would not hear her. We waited a few minutes then left the restaurant astonished by the poor service. Stopped by Balkan House for lunch and, wow, it is amazing! Located near downtown Ferndale, this place is small and comfy! The place is bustling and busy. We were seated quickly and our order was taken. It took a while for the food to come out but it was worth it! The food is reminiscent of Balkan cuisine and it showcases the meat. Completely inedible and in the top 5 worst meals have ever received. The DoorDash photo of this nastiness did ensure a full refund. Even the AI help customer service chat could tell it was a flop. And the Bosnian salad. That's the portion for $10. That pic is how it arrived. Husbands doner bowl was more rubbery tasteless microwaved meat completely hidden by the immense carpet of doner sauce, I'm pretty sure this was purposeful to hide the foul meal lurking beneath. Pretty solid place! Located in Downtown Ferndale and easy to miss. We stopped here to get carryout on a Thursday evening and it wasn't busy but they had a lot of Doordash orders going out. It's counter service and they bring the food to you as soon as it's ready. Kind of glad we didn't eat in as the tables felt a little sticky. The food was very very good though and portions were huge which made me feel a little better about the prices. They give you a solid amount of meat in the bowl and I'm glad it wasn't just mostly rice. Sauce is delicious and the veggies tasted fresh. Fries were just okay and didn't taste very seasoned. On Thursdays they have a deal where you get a free side of fries and a drink if you get a doner kebab so I can't complain too much about a free item. read more

Fantastic fast casual place in downtown Ferndale. The food here is fresh, delicious, and plentiful. The staff was super friendly as well. Stopped in for lunch this weekend. Interesting, sorta familiar but not exactly. They specialize in "Doner" which I assumed would be most similar to middle eastern lamb/beef but it reminded me more of greek gyro. You order at a counter and then can sit (mostly tables for two). Then when it's ready they bring the food out. My husband had the Doner kebab and I had it on top of fries. It was like a salad with cucumber and tomatoes mixed with gyro and fries with a tasty sauce to put on top. It was pretty good. A large portion for sure. And I would consider having it again. The gentleman at the counter was very hospitable, kind, and he went above and beyond to provide us the best experience possible. The restaurant was on the smaller side but had cozy vibes and there were plenty of customers. Located in a cozy space on the main drag, we were immediately greeted by a friendly associate. She explained the menu to us when we ordered at the counter. The Balkan House isn't close to home, but we never pass up an opportunity to grab a Doner Sandwich when we're in the area. Last weekend we were returning home from up north on 696 and when I saw the sign for Ferndale - I asked my husband to exit. Fifteen minutes later, we were on our way with a delicious dinner in tow and some perfect waffle fries for the car ride. The service is fast and friendly and the food - fantastic! When we arrived, the two ladies (which I assume were the owners) were sitting outside smoking, and when they saw that we clearly wanted to eat at their place, they seemed to be irritated that we are disrupting their free time. This kind of behavior is so typical for Eastern European countries, I know it very well. So sad. Fortunately, the younger one got herself together and took our order with a better attitude. We sat outside awaiting. They don't have many tables outside, but it's still nice they have some. I'm very happy that they do offer some vegan items. Looking at their menu, they have plenty of vegan options to choose from. We both had the döner in a pita, my husband got the traditional one, and I went with vegan falafel. Both were very good. This was probably one of the best falafel I've had. Wish there was more sauce, I'm a saucy person, but there was no issue to get some more. Was flying back to Virginia. Stopped to have dinner before my flight home. My sister lives .25 mile from there and didn't know it was there. Kind of tucked away. my favorite food in Ferndale! if you crave something unique and lovingly made, look no further than Balkan House! This place adds some much needed diversity to the Ferndale food scene. As a vegetarian I love to get the Falafel Doner, with crispy fresh bread and a savory delicious sauce over falafel and veggies. I also highly recommend the bean soup when it's available. My meat-eating companion loves the chevapi (sausage) or the beef/lamb doner. Really, there isn't a bad thing on the menu. The restaurant is small but cozy, and not often too crowded as they do a lot of carry out orders. Service is always amazing and friendly. We've ordered multiple times from this location and have never had an issue. My husband usually gets the doner kebab and I the doner bowl with rice. We ordered I believe an hour and a half before close, on 7/3, all of my rice was stale. There wasn't a fresh piece in there. Just disappointing since the meet and sauce are so good. We both got the Loaded Döner and it reminded us a lot of a gyro. The biggest difference was the fantastic bread that it came on. The produce inside of the sandwich was so fresh. Tasted like you got it from the garden! The French fries were great and came with a seasoning on them that made them even better. I ate here about 2 weeks ago. They let me bring my dog in when I made my order and took care of both of us when we sat outside to enjoy our food in the beautiful weather we had that day. They even brought out a bowl of water for my dog! I was treated very well here, the food was excellent, the fries were tasty, but the Doner Kabob was outstanding! Balkan House has amazing doner sandwiches. I had the loaded doner which included fries and feta cheese in addition. The lamb/gyro meat was flavorful and had an authentic flavor to it. The feta added a good amount of salt which was balanced out by the cabbage and other veggies. Also had a side of waffles fries which were perfectly cooked.
