    9 course meal menu
    Steve Z.

This is one of the hottest restaurants in Detroit and for good reason - just awesome from start to finish. We had a 9 course meal and felt like we were the only ones in the entire restaurant. Coming back here as soon as we are back in downtown Detroit. This restaurant ROCKS! Check out my pics and menu options! You will NOT be disappointed.

Great open kitchen concept. Had the 5 course tasting menu and thought it was fantastic. From the duck ham that tasted like a unique bacon. The potato's were tasty and firm. The steak probably needed another minute for the fat to render but was good and the sauce was fantastic. The service was on point with multiple people serving and caring for us. Definitely worth a try.

-Service: Celebrated a special event here and a sweet card was on the table, the dessert celebrated the event again, and few people who served here congratulated us throughout the dining course. So if celebrating a special occasion, they'll surely make it extra special for you. - Food: We did the 5 course and opted for cocktails instead of the wine pairings. The lobster, sweet potato, cauliflower, pasta dishes and red velvet dessert were very nice. A couple of items were about ok. Overall food was great. - Cocktails: The last word cocktail is just perfect! - Ambiance: From outside we weren't sure of the place, but once you walk in the ambiance is nice and inviting, so were the music and overall vibe. We found parking on the street. - Pros: Food, service, last word cocktail, ambiance inside. Will definitely recommend this place

Oh freya how I love thee. The price point is well worth it. Parking is usually difficult, but I will gladly trudge a frozen block to make my early bird dinner reservation for yall. We come here a couple few times a year and the staff has begun to recognize us. There's always new creative things on the menu and they truly shine in making sure vegans feel included and celebrated- no "hey here's the whole produce aisle since we don't know what to do" like I've found at other high end spots. There's always been a heartfelt card from the staff for our occasion, chairs are pulled out for you, each course explained, silverware changed between courses, offer of still or sparkling water and thoughtful beverage pairing courses available. They play actual vinyl records and there are no high walls splitting up the restaurant, can see kitchen, seating area, tables, wet bar, the hustle and bustle. Art on the walls rotates and showcases local makers. Really fun. My top recommendation for a memorable special occasion meal.

We were one of the first reservations of the evening. When we walked in, there were waiters lined up ready to go. The music was bumpin in the otherwise quiet dining room. Shout out to Hank who squatted down to explain the dishes to us, because it was difficult to hear the other waiters. We did the chef's tasting menu, so we did not know what we were going to eat. They do ask in advance if you have allergies so they can accomodate that in the menu for you. We did not report any allergies so we had the standard menu. The menu started with two cold items, oysters and beef tartar. The oysters had some tangy rubarb in it. The flavors were delicious, but we just are not raw oysters people. The tartar had some rice crispies all over it for some texture. It was a good balance of acid. Then we had asparagus with peasto. When I first dug in, I just had a bite of asparagus. I was not getting the hype. Then, when having a bite with the peasto, it made so much more sense. Very herbaceous, nutty, and delicious. The pork belly with giardiniera was fatty, meaty, and balanced by he acidity of the giardiniera veggies. Our standout dish of the meal was the mushroom dish with this thick broth. Very umami - ish. Unlike anything I've ever had before. There were several types of mushrooms in there. I would recommend trying this. There might have been some fish sauce and miso paste in the broth? It also seemed like there was some balsamic stuff under the mushrooms. The scallops were my personal least favorite dish of the evening. I found the combination of the char on the scallop with the sweetness of the curry sauce to be a bit unappealing. The char on the scallops was also not crunchy. These little melon gelee palate cleansers were a delightful refreshing bite with a fun texture. Then, we had baramundi with a shrimp bread pudding type thing. This was super delicious. There were some beans in there too. The penultimate meal of the evening was a veal tenderloin. It was very tender and perfectly coked. I forget what the sauce was with it. This dish was probably the most familiar tasting. Dessert was chocolate on chocolate with blackberries. It was super good, and not too sweet or too bitter. The crunchy crumbles were a nice touch. We aren't huge chocolate people so we probably would have preferred a less chocolatey option to the plate, but it was still definitely executed well. Doing the tasting menu was a fun, albeit expensive, experience.

I have wanted to check out this restaurant for a while. I made a reservation which was a requirement. It is located on Grand Blvd in the heart of the city. Parking is sparce as there are 2 restaurants side by side. We were quickly seated and coats were taken. The waiter quickly appeared and explained the menu There was a 5 course with an optional wine pairing. I selected the wine pairing and from the various food options in each section. I did the bbq oyster mushroons, mackerel with mussels, strip steak, duck and caramel dessert. All were prepared well. Do not look for full plates as this is an upscale restaurant with well designed presentations. Each entree was explained and how it was prepared on presentation. The strip steak was a good portion and filled me up pretty quickly. All the items were prepared well with nice wine pairings and food tastes. This is definitely a place for special occasions or just a unique food experience. I will definitely plan on coming back.

Substantial tasting menu option, including vegetarian option. I had the 9 course tasting. The wine list was impressive with a large number of vegan wines. The staff were very friendly and the food was great. The atmosphere was nice for a stormy Thursday.

This restaurant has a really cool vibe- minimalist/chic. Our waiter, Hank was very knowledgeable and helpful, answering all of our questions with grace. There were a couple other people bussing to help him out. The menu changes all the time but the concept remains the same: a five course meal with 3-4 options for each course. The courses get gradually larger until dessert so the fourth course is basically the main. There is also an optional beverage pairing- n/a, wine or wildcard. Also- there is easy & FREE street parking in front of the restaurant which is so nice in Detroit. They provided a complimentary salad and bread to start and I thought that was a great surprise! For the first course- I chose the oyster (bay scallop, white chocolate, green tea foam, yuzu). First of all, the shell was edible and there was such an interesting mixture of flavors and depth- salty, sweet, nutty. The oyster and scallop were a good texture, not slimy at all. My friends got the tuna crudo and seemed to enjoy it as well. The white fish pierogi was my second course and I really enjoyed it- the cream cheese/whitefish mix felt like comfort food. Third course- I got the boar ribs and this was one of my favorite parts of the meal. The meat was lean and tender and the apple cider glaze was subtle but delicious. Main/fourth course- I got the Rohan duck with bread pudding. It was served with sherry and honey jus. I was a bit disappointed with this dish- the sauce was overpowering and the duck/bread pudding was really heavy. I actually think that this one would have been better in a smaller portion. My friend got the waygu and that was amazing so I had a bit of food envy, haha! I also found the coconut panna cotta disappointing. The fig compote and the peanut brittle was tasty but the panna cotta itself was a little flavorless and the texture was kind of stiff. They had a good number of drinks that could be made n/a so I loved that inclusivity! I got the bell pepper spritzer and it was light and had a slight sweet/citrus flavor that was really nice.

Everything about this evening was top notch. It was our anniversary & they did everything possible to make it special. Our courses were all fabulous, the service was the best, and the cocktails were expertly crafted. Thanks for a memorable night!

The Grand Tasting (9-course tasting menu) costs 155pp (closer to 200 after tax and 22% gratuity). My friend and I made reservations a few weeks ago since we wanted to experience fine dining in Detroit. Freya stood out to us compared to other options, in terms of reviews, presentation and the courses that we'd be able to try. We were able to find street parking nearby pretty easily, and we were seated right at the time of our reservation. The interior looked like an "abandoned warehouse turned into a fancy Italian restaurant" with an open kitchen concept. Unlike many fine dining establishments, the space was spacious with lots of tables. The design was a bit mismatched. One wall had a monochromatic print of an arch overlooking mountainous scenery, while another wall featured gray brick adorned with some modern art. It created a bit of a disjointed vibe. We were given water immediately, and the servers explained each course we got thoroughly (but it was hard to hear since it's pretty loud). Here were our thoughts regarding each course: TUNA This course featured fresh big-eyed tuna paired with creamy avocado and radish. The quinoa crunch on top added a nice crunchy texture. While it was tasty, it felt like a pricy, mini poke bowl -- good, but nothing particularly innovative. The citrusy notes from the blood orange were nice, though. PANISE There was a lot going on in this course, but the flavors went well together. The chickpea fritter was crispy, and the mushroom ragu had a nice spicy kick, but a bit too salty. The almond cheese foam was denser than expected, more like a whipped cream cheese than a foam, but it was nutty and rich. Overall a unique course, and we enjoyed the furikake topping. PIEROGI These lightly pan-fried pierogi were filled with smoked white fish and cream cheese, which gave them a bagel-like vibe, especially with the dill on top. The miso honey mustard sauce was a good complement, but we didn't taste much miso. The dish felt a bit heavy, and I couldn't imagine eating more than the two that we were given. GRILLED CAULIFLOWER This was a surprisingly well-balanced dish that was the most unique out of them all. The cauliflower was grilled to perfection and paired with a rich, spiced makhani sauce. Toppings like golden raisins and pickled vegetables added a refreshing, crisp sweetness. The mix of flavors and textures worked together beautifully to create a bold dish. CAPELLINI The pasta was wrapped tightly, and the caviar added a nice touch. The sauce, made with butternut and champagne, was rich and buttery with a strong umami profile, although we couldn't quite identify the butternut flavor since it wasn't sweet as we expected. The noodles had a perfect al dente texture, reminiscent of ramen. INTERMEZZO For the palette cleanser before our entrees, we got a spoonful or raspberry and beet sorbet. The sorbet had earthy beet notes (very obvious that this was made using a root vegetable of some sort), which were balanced by the tart flavors of raspberry. It wasn't too sweet, which we appreciated. KVARØY SALMON The salmon was perfectly cooked, but the skin (topped with crispy rice and drizzled with fish caramel) didn't cut easily. The fish caramel reminded me of teriyaki sauce. The salmon was paired nicely with the fried enoki mushrooms with kimchi emulsion. The dish was a little salty, and the bonito flakes and scallions added a nice touch. WAGYU BEEF This was the most disappointing dish. The wagyu beef was surprisingly tough and chewy, and it didn't cut as easily as I'd expect from wagyu. The peppercorn crust was nice, but the beef didn't live up to expectations. The pommes purée, however, was tasty since it was an extremely buttery, whipped mashed potatoes. The au poivre sauce on the side was a bit too salty. The mushrooms paired well with the potatoes, but a couple pieces were slightly burnt and bitter. CHOCOLATE The herbed granita was an interesting twist--sweet and tart, but very herb-forward, which I didn't like in a granita. However, the chocolate mousse was smooth and rich without being overly sweet, topped with a crunchy element and two raspberries on the side to add a bit of tartness. The combination of orange, hazelnut, and chocolate worked surprisingly well together. Overall, the tasting menu was good, but it didn't feel particularly groundbreaking. I think taking more risks to find more unique combinations of flavors could enhance the overall experience. My friend and I thought that some of the courses were a bit too salty. That being said, the service was generally good, and we enjoyed discussing each course to better understand the flavors and ingredients we were tasting during our nearly 3-hour dining experience.

Dining at Freya was one of the best dining experiences I've had in Detroit! My boyfriend surprised me with dinner here for our anniversary. The ability to do tasting menus that don't have to be the same was perfect for us! I eat mostly vegan and 100% dairy-free but he does not so we both got to enjoy exactly what we wanted. From start to finish, the staff was exceptional and great at creating a fine dining experience. Being offered a purse hook was a pleasant surprise and showcases the level of service they provide for every detail. We were welcomed with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine, a non alcoholic option was also available which was what I chose as I don't drink often. When asked about dietary preferences and allergies they marked the menu so I knew exactly what was available for me. Each dish was delicious and had a great balance of flavors. The ambiance was relaxing and enjoyable with low lighting but not so dark you can't read a menu. The house-made granola delivered with the check is a nice touch. We will definitely be back again! Freya is the perfect place for an intimate date night or anyone seeking an elevated dining experience.

I had been wanting to try Freya for a while and my friends and I ended up going for my birthday. The interior feels very light and open which we loved! Service was also very attentive and friendly, and brought me a lovely birthday dessert at the end! The food, albeit pricey, is absolutely beautiful. Everything is stunningly plated that made me happy just to look at! Everything also tasted amazing, and with smaller portions we tried many items on the menu. I'd definitely go back to celebrate another occasion!

Made it back to Detroit after a long hiatus. I was in town for the Free Press Marathon which fell on the week of my birthday. I decided to treat myself to a nice dinner and ended up here. The prix fixe menu looked very appealing, as did the tasting menu however, since I decided to dine alone the former was the better option based off the description. The pricing for both was very reasonable imo. I made a reservation stating it was my birthday and the staff accommodated me despite my incorrect selection of seating which required them to contact me. I was given a complimentary glass of champagne and seated very promptly. Although I cannot remember the exact name of the dishes, everything was absolutely incredible. From the house made bread, cucamelon and tomato salad to the 5 courses + additional complementary dish, I can't complain. The taste and presentation was perfect. The vibe of the place was very calm and welcoming, dimly lit, with a great record selection playing in the background. Despite it being cozy and romantic, I didn't feel awkward being alone and in smart casual attire. Only negative I have is they aren't located near me.

They recently renovated the interior, and I do really like the update--using lighter colors has brightened the space and made it feel more modern. Unfortunately, a recent experience seriously impacted my opinion. I called to place a takeout order for about five people from my workplace, and the young man who answered the phone--Adrian--was extremely rude. He seemed impatient from the start, and by the time I was giving the third order, he began huffing and puffing, talking over me, and rushing me. Before I could even finish, he hung up on me. His coworkers were saying his name in the background, which is how I learned who he was. Adrian's behavior showed a complete lack of basic customer service and professionalism, and it did not represent Maine Street well at all. If answering phones and taking orders is part of the job, then patience and respect should be a given. Adrian needs serious improvement in customer service, because that interaction alone was enough to make me reconsider ordering again. On a lighter note, this place has long been part of the fabric of Hamtramck, and that's why this experience was so disappointing. Hamtramck has always taken pride in its local spots, community, and hospitality, and I hope Maine Street gets back to reflecting the warmth and care that made so many of us loyal customers for years.
