Overall was very pleased with the experience. the decor and minimal, but nice and the and the service was top notch. They replaced our napkins every time a person left the table and pulled our seat out upon our return. The food was solid, and I think this place would be great for a date. However, the first thing that comes to mind when I think back is how long the meal was. It was 5 course tasting menu with some extras, and it took almost three hours. Based on the number of course, I felt it was just too long for such a short menu. I think part of it was that they offered two many choices. I appreciate the ability to customize the menu, but I think the breaks between courses really detracted from the overall experience. I don't think we were the only ones as I saw another party take dessert to-go. The highlights for me were the smoked whitefish and the the sweet pea cake with strawberries. I had the lamb for my main entree and it tasted more like beef. A nice crust, but just did not do it for me. Long story short, a wonderful place, but I don't feel the need to try it again. Freya will wow you from start to finish. Food: 5/5 stars. I cannot even begin to describe how incredible the food is. The menu changes frequently depending on what's in season, so you will have a unique experience each time you come. Each person orders one item from each course. With 2-3 people in your party you will be able to try a vast majority of the menu. Every single dish was an experience -- flavorful, stunningly presented, and unique. I liked everything I ordered. You will leave very full. Service: 5/5 stars. The impeccable service alone is enough to give the whole restaurant 5/5 stars. The coordination between staff is an art form itself - I have never been anywhere with better service. Ambiance: 5/5 stars. Freya manages to combine fine dining with an inviting atmosphere featuring exposed brick walls, wood-topped tables, local artwork, and a fantastic record selection playing in the background. Whitney Houston was playing while we were finishing our meal, which was the perfect send-off for the whole experience. Things to note: They offer wine, cocktail, and non-alcoholic pairings for your meal. I tried the non-alcoholic pairing, which was artfully done to match each dish. I was very impressed that they made the non-alcoholic drinks just as special and unique as the wine pairing (which someone else at my table had with their meal and really enjoyed). Attire in the restaurant ranged from dressy-casual to more formal suits and dresses -- you will feel comfortable at either end of the spectrum. Insanely positive experience at Freya, from the design of the space to the outstanding service, presentation and quality of the food. They start the service with a toast that can either be alcoholic or non-alcoholic depending on your preference. A (very pretty) salad, homemade bread and a delicious everything bagel butter come along to start your meal and all were top notch. Then you have 5 plates to choose for your tasting menu, you can mix and match from 3-4 selections per plate order, from keeping everything vegetarian or pescatarian to mix all of those if you're more omnivore. Everything was very creative, beautifully plated, and delicious. I started with the oysters, then had the rainbow carrots, moving to entrees had the seafood risotto followed by the teres major, and finished with the chocolate dessert. It's a long meal crafted with all the love in the world and prepared, as much as possible, with local ingredients. There are options for wine and cocktail pairings but, as I was driving by and still had a lot of miles ahead of me, I went for the non alcoholic pairing and the team also does an incredibly creative job with that. Very low key outdoor setting and you round the corner and the sign is on the door- not quite like a secret but sort of. Open the door and warmly greeted by host, a little bit of bubbles, and you sit and pick out an album you'd like to hear. (They are open to feedback) To the table and chairs pulled simultaneously for my and my companions arrival. We were given choices for the 5 courses. Some were extremely difficult. We had a cocktail prior to starting. Each course served with precision and at the same time. They played my album... I've never had such amazing vegetable/vegan dishes. I had the wine pairing. The only negative is that we had a later reservation (9:30) which left us as the only costumers left in the restaurant at the end of the night. We enjoyed the New Year's Eve 5-course, prix fixe ($165 pp) menu with wine pairings (at an additional $89 pp) on this first visit to Freya. The co-owner welcomed us with a beautiful glass of celebratory champagne and showed us to our seats inside the wide, open room offering plenty of space between dining parties. Background music played low enough to speak in normal tones and be easily heard. Nice! Know that you can come as you are. There's no pretension or judgement here. Hailey, our knowledgeable and professional server, worked with ten other servers to get the food out to patrons as soon as it was prepared by the Chefs and their assistants. Watching them work in concert at the back of the room was an experience in itself! The crusty, warm, house-made sourdough bread was excellent. Each course was attended to completely and plated gorgeously. The flavors were so well integrated! The Lobster Potato Bisque incredibly flavorful. The wine pairings were out of this world. Kudos to the Sommelier! I recommend Freya for special occasions. Two caveats: Expect the dining to be a two-and-a-half to three hour experience, AND bring your wallet. It is very pricey. read more

Dining at Freya is an experience, and one that I cannot recommend enough. From the service to the food presentation to its delivery and taste, every part of the evening is extremely well thought-out. We both did the vegan tasting menu, which even had selections to choose from for a couple of the courses! I loved that. Additionally, I selected the wine pairing with each dish and my partner selected the NA cocktail pairing with each dish; both were lovely additions to elevate the meal and experience further. I also recommend stopping by their cocktail bar, Dragonfly, next store if you arrive early before your reservation. They'll check you in at Freya when you arrive, and personally walk you over when your table at Freya is ready. No rush on finishing your drinks either; you can bring them with you next door. Freya has been on my watch list for awhile as a new, worth checking out spot. A couple friends and I had a excellent dinner after making reservations (a fair amount of time ahead) for a Friday night. Considering how curated the meal is, reservations are highly recommended, We knew ahead of time to plan for the meal as a longer experience. We spent about three hours, if you are going, definitely plan for this amount of time and enjoy without being rushed. Freya is meant to be a five course tasting menu that is ever changing and ingredient focused. You do get to choose each course, which we did like, from 3-4 options. The server was good at helping if there were questions. The menu is vegetarian friendly, they have at least one course in each section. I do not think it is helpful to go into detail about what we ordered as the menu will have completely changed. You start out with a complimentary glass of bubbly, and the bread and butter, followed by salad (as a shared course). The butter for the bread was cranberry with just the right amount of salt. I thought the menu was a mix of creative and some more traditional. The parts that stood out seemed to be where they went more creative: chopped mixed salads, flavorful spices. I liked the ambiance, mostly basic with clean lines, but clean and focused. The kitchen is open, walking by it appeared organized and clean (reassuring!) This is perhaps a random side note, but I really liked their chairs. They were lower, low backed and incredibly comfortable, which is not always the case at high end, trendy restaurants. The service here should be highlighted. It is phenomenal, if I was breaking up the review, service is 5 stars. Maybe more, I can see some finding it to be too much though. I had a small issue with one of my courses, they quickly offered and then fixed concern. It might be the best service in the city. I read an article that Freya was planned as a tasting menu experience, at a reasonable price point. I do think overall they met this mark overall. The tasting menu is $75 and the wine pairing is $50. I can not quite give Freya 5 stars, as the menu changes so frequently, others may have had 5 star food. I just do not think ours was quite there when I compare to other similar tasting menu restaurants in the Detroit area. There were certainly some perfect moments and bites, but overall I think it just had a little bit more to go to reach that level. It is still newer, so I think they can continue to grow. The first part of our meal was paced well, but there was a quite a bit of time before dessert, and we were ready to leave. I know others have mentioned pacing issues, this is something else that can be improved though and would not stop me from going. read more

The plating was beautiful, and the service was impeccable from start to finish. While not every dish was a home run, several were, and two in particular were absolute grand slams. The entire table was equally captivated by this unforgettable dining experience. It is a beautiful open space with an open air kitchen which allows you to watch the hustle and bustle of the chefs as they create beautiful dishes. Additionally, this restaurant supports and features art from local artists around the dining room. freya is unique in that it features a 95$ 5 course menu where you have the opportunity to choose from multiple offerings in each course. The menu changes often as it features ingredients that are in season. Additionally, the restaurant is very accommodating to different diets such as vegan, gluten free, veggie, pescatarian. From the moment we entered the restaurant it was obvious that the restaurant's goal is to make sure that you have a memorable experience. They offered us a glass of complimentary champagne to start the evening off right. Additionally they brought to the table freshly baked squash bread and accommodated my gluten allergy with a freshly baked GF biscuit. Since there were four of us dining, we decided to order all of the options per course and share the dishes to sample as many flavours as possible. I must say that all of the dishes were executed to perfection. It was obvious that the chefs' considered balancing flavours and textures when composing each dish. At the end of the meal they even brought a complimentary gift to take home; homemade fig bars and gluten free chocolates. I like a food experience and my husband just wants a good meal that doesn't feel too fancy and will fill him up. We got here and I got nervous that he'd hate it because of the serving style and he walked away SO happy. The food was delicious, I loved the nice drinks, the different portions, and the vibe, and my husband thought the food was incredible and that he got enough (he's a large man). We walked out of the restaurant and agreed that it was one of the better meals we've had and could not have gotten better service. We made a reservation right at 5pm when they opened so I'm not sure if the time of the evening helped, but we will definitely be back. People! You must eat here! The 5 course fixed price meal was worth every penny! My husband and I came here for a special anniversary dinner. The experience could not have been better! You've probably seen something like this on tv where the people sit in a fancy restaurant with waitstaff in tuxes, and the dishes served look beautiful and like nothing you've ever seen before. THIS IS BETTER! Freya has a more relaxed vibe, no uniform for the waitstaff, cool art on the wall that you can purchase (there's an art menu!), they have a binder for their LP collection and you can request which album you'd like to hear. We were given an anniversary card signed by the staff with a personal message inside, given a complimentary drink, and when we left, we were given a loaf of house made bread and jam! The service was impeccable and the food was everything I would have wanted it to be. I will definitely be going back and I'm telling everyone I see to eat here. read more

This is one of the most exciting restaurants I have been to in years! The food. The service . The creativity, and even the bar next door that is set up for guests while they are waiting. Our experience at Freya couldn't have been better. To set things up- the menu is a 5 course tasting menu. They are very accommodating and you can do an everything, pescatarian or even vegan option. One of our guests did the vegan and trying some of her dishes we were all super impressed. When we arrived we were taken to a fun cocktail bar to the right of the restaurant. Drinks here were delicious and moderately priced. Note - there is not much signage on either place. Almost like a hidden gem- reminded me of alinea in Chicago from the outside. The food was all exquisite and surprisingly filling given the small portions but the real star was the service. There had to be the highest guest to staff ratio I have seen since well before Covid. If you drop a napkin or fork it is noticed and picked up by a spotter within 20 seconds. Food wise - every dish was well thought out. The scallop option to start was so much fun, and the venison item that was second to the end was perfectly tender and accompanied by a flavorful sauce. The final plate which was dessert was like a symphony of perfection and balance, I would eat it every day. My wife and I split the wine pairing which was good and only $50. The first drink was sake and the last was a fortified wine. All complimented the food well but for my taste I probably would have just ordered 2 glasses of wine of my choosing. Honestly even the prices seemed moderate to low given the quality. Compared to similar restaurants in other cities we thought this was a steal! read more

I had the opportunity to join a group of friends for the NYE tasting menu. I was excited after reading the reviews, but unfortunately, the meal fell short. The team members were absolutely outstanding and super friendly. The manner in which they presented the dishes and interaction was great. Unfortunately, there were several odd things, like not receiving the tasting menu, which was verbally communicated. This made it very difficult to understand in a noisy room and created undue stress on the waitress which was evident. I was also surprised as the drinks were, unfortunately, poorly executed. Each of us had different drinks, which included biters. The amount of bitters in each of our drinks was overwhelming and undrinkable. The food also didn't hit the mark for me. The snacks presented weren't outstanding and a bit odd. The best dish was the pork belly which was perfectly executed. However, the chocolate dessert was tasteless, the beet salad had no seasoning and beets were gritting, and lastly, the lamb dish lacked considerable seasoning. Overall the experience was great, but the food lacked the quality and taste of the expense of the meal, which was more than a normal night at Freya. Certainly will go back and try again as this may have been due to NYE as all the other reviews rave about the food. read more

Ugh, I can't even begin to explain how great of an experience it was dining at Freya. I loved every second of it. You can choose between vegan, pescatarian, or "I eat everything" and then it's wonderful surprise after wonderful surprise. We chose our main entree (venison/snapper) and dessert (chocolate!), but since there were two of us, we opted to just get one of each of every other course and let them surprise us with who got what. There was no menu to go with it, but they told us a little about each dish when they brought it out. Everything. was. fantastic. There was so much to each dish, and they were thoughtfully and beautifully done. It IS expensive, but for what you get, I don't think it's a bad deal at all. PLUS they gave us complimentary champagne at the beginning, and bread to take home, and those little touches were delightful. The service is crazy good - I felt like a queen as several different people swirled in and out filling waters, bringing drinks, explaining dishes, wiping crumbs from the table etc. It was like a beautifully choreographed dance... Everyone here is really good at what they do! I loved it and will be back some day read more

Unlike Mabel grey, you get to know and get to pick all your courses up front. There's 2-3 options for each course ranging from meat eaters to vegetarians to vegans. Without doing it on purpose, I happened to pick an all vegan dinner. There were some dishes that I really liked but other fell really flat and didn't wow me. For example, the sunchoke tart entree was BEAUTIFUL (see my pics) but for an entree, it didn't hit the spot. It was sweet and just lacked flavor. Another course I didn't care much for was a salad. It just seemed like something I could make on my own. However, I did enjoy the umami tofu and beet salad. I'm not sure I'd go back given the high price and the fact I wasn't wowed. If you like fancy chef tastings, it's def worth trying especially since the menu will always change. But I'd def pick Mabel grey over freya if you had to chose. read more

We were greeted by a hostess who offered us a glass of sparkling wine while we waited to be seated. We also chose a couple of songs to play on the record player, which was a great treat for our party of vinyl lovers. The service was attentive and unobtrusive, offered great suggestions for wine and made sure our dietary restrictions and allergies were taken into consideration. The tasting menu itself was imaginative, tasty, comforting and beautifully presented on elegant plates. Our party of 4 got the pescatarian option, the meat option and a couple of vegetarian options, which was great for sharing and exploring all the options. I can't stop sharing with my friends how amazing our dinner experience was at Freya. The interior is very industrial, washed brick and concrete floors with soft decor touches throughout. I love the minimalist concept as the food, service, and warmth of dinner conversation stands out. Upon arrival we were greeted with champagne and asked to pick out an album for the record player. It was SO fun! There were some tunes that had us dancing in our chair. The food.... was incredible. They are very sensitive and accommodating to all types of dietary restrictions. We had the tuna tartare, scallops, pasta, and Branzino. All of the dishes are artfully plated and layered with complexity of flavors and textures. I've been wanting to try this place since I heard it was opening. I went for my birthday and it did not disappoint. I loved every second of it. It is truly an experience of food. There isn't a big sign outside showing you where the restaurant is, it's more subtle and almost feels like a secret. When you walk in, there is a very modern feel and the staff greeted us right away. We had 6 courses (including dessert) paired with wine selections. All the courses were phenomenal. You can tell they pay very close attention to detail by the presentation of all the food. Even though the food is upscale and fancy, the feel of the place is a relaxed environment. There were people dressed in business casual attire and people dressed more comfortably. My experience at freya was amazing. I'll start by saying that I only leave yelp reviews for places that I think are musts for people that love food. So, this review had to be written. Firstly, we went to dragonfly for a few drinks to start the night. They were all really good. The bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable and elevated the experience on what were very unique flavors in the cocktails. I had the coffee one, the mustard, and one other. If you're only getting one, make it the coffee. So unique. But the dining experience was next level. The kitchen was in constant motion but super quiet. Any/everyone that worked there was constantly on watch for the slightest thing that needed to be done. A friend dropped his knife and by the time he reached over to pick it up there was a server there to replace it. Both times someone got up to use the restroom, there was someone there to pull out their chair when they returned. And their napkin was cleanly folded then they got back. It was in essence what a dinning experience can be if everyone there wants you to experience to its fullest. As far as the food, it was outstanding. From the garlic butter and bread to start through the dessert, it was amazing. Surprisingly, the best dish that we had was the first and we all agree if we were to go back tonight it would be a must. A 3 day cured egg. Who knew??? Oh, and one of the bartenders at dragonfly told us we'd be nuts if we didn't order that egg. all and all, this place is a must for any foodie. read more

Freya was a cute place to go for a special occasion. We do like tasting menus and we're very excited to try it out. I do not think it lived up to the hype but was pleased overall. The service was probably the best I have ever experienced. They are very attentive and would even pull out your chair as you were getting up to use the restroom. I love the idea of a celebratory cheers of champagne that you are supposed to be greeted with (but that was something overlooked for our table and had to ask the server after our second course but they quickly brought it over at that point). I also liked that it was the first tasting menu we have been able to pick from 4 different options per course. That way my partner, friends and I could pick different things and try each other's to see what was the best. It did seem rather expensive for what we received but we were full at the end so at least we weren't leaving hungry. I probably wouldn't recommend the wine pairing. The food was creative and impressive for the most part but I have been to other places that had the wine elevate the course and didn't see that here. We went to Freya for my husband's birthday dinner and had an amazing experience. Started off next door at Dragonfly for a few cocktails, which were fun and tasty. The bartender checked and let us know when our table was ready and led us over to Freya. From start to finish, this was the best service I have ever experienced at a restaurant. The hostess promptly sat us and brought us complimentary champagne. The server greeted us within a minute. Brought fresh made bread and yummy flavored butter. Then a salad course came out, also complimentary. We ordered, and the courses came out seemlessly. We never had dirty plates or silverware in front of us, never an empty drink. The food was delicious. My favorites were the bison tartare and the pork with caramel sauce. It is definitely a pricey night out, but it is certainly worth every dollar. read more

I took my best friend visiting me from California and my fiancé here for dinner. It was one of those completely unforgettable experiences. I'll list some moments: 1. There is so much of a personal touch. You are offered bubbles or sparkling water as a welcome drink. With every dish that is placed down, the waitstaff explains every single ingredient. 2. There is such a preciseness and attention to detail. The waitstaff comes and places each person's dish down at the same time, it almost feels like a coordinated dance. And when you get up to go to the restroom, they fold your napkin neatly when you leave and when you come back, they pull our your chair for you to sit down. 3. The food. Of course, all of the above wouldn't even make it something I would go back to do again if it wasn't for the amazing, fresh, locally sourced food. Wow. Everything was so tasty. 2 of us did omnivore course and 1 of us are vegan. I will say that everyone's course was so incredible. After reading tons of amazing reviews, I suggested Freya for a nice dinner out with two other couples. I really really wanted to love this place, but our experience did not live up to our expectations. The space was beautiful, the waitstaff was attentive, and the dishes were interesting, but the food itself just didn't wow us. Of the five course tasting menus, there was only one dish that I loved, and the others were just okay. My entree also arrived lukewarm, which I chalked up to the fact that our table of 6 had several different entrees which all arrived at the same time. While this certainly made for a nice presentation, I'd rather have my food get to me warm rather than a sit for a bit (which is what I assume happened) waiting for the other entrees to be ready so all could be served together. At this price point, it'll probably be a while before we give Freya another try. read more

First time to Freya was overall a very good experience. I wish I could give 4.5 stars. Went to celebrate a big professional accomplishment And was given champagne to start since they were aware of our celebratory dinner. The staff members were extremely friendly and accommodating. I liked that there was no actual menu but verbally given to us at the beginning. My wife and I just ended up trying everything on the tasting menu. Some things were better than others but everything was technically perfect. The meal is a bit expensive, I just wish there was one more course (-0.5 star). I'm okay with gratuity being built in at 22%. I'll definitely give it another shot even though I feel there are better options in Detroit at the moment. Also this was better than Mabel gray, I noticed some others saying otherwise. I've been to Mabel several times and definitely enjoyed this meal more. read more
