I find it hard to find good seafood restaurants (and I live in Florida)! The ambiance is modern elegant and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We started with the salmon tartare which is served with a lid with the smoke inside. It isn't just for looks - it truly gives it the flavor and it was excellent. We also got a shrimp cocktail which, while pricey, wasn't overpriced for the quality and amount. My husband and I shared the paella and didn't finish it. It wasn't traditional as there was a sauce to it but it was not a wet paella. There was plenty of seafood in the paella and the flavors great. My son had the Monkfish which was a nice portion and he enjoyed. We didn't get rushed but they were attentive. For a nice quality seafood restaurant we found the prices to be appropriate. We enjoyed the experience and meal and would go back. read more

This is more of a 3.5 and the reason for that extra half point is solely the staff and the attention to detail. The service was fantastic, akin to a Michelin star restaurant, and I found the staff to be attentive, respectful, and genuinely concerned with providing the best service. The rest of the experience was okay. Firstly, the place is packed. It's not a nice, relaxed experience. You're bumped into, waiters cannot get to you without waiting for folks to pass, etc. also, the atmosphere (as well as their website) suggests at least a business casual dress code. People were in flip flops chatting noisily while some weird club music was in the background. The food, however, was a bit disappointing. We started off strong with a beautifully fresh sea bass tartare and grilled octopus. House bread was amazing. Plating was very well done. We ordered the salted branzino for two. We were kind of disappointed--it didn't turn out too pretty and we were left with chunks instead of a nice filet. Also, while the fish was cooked very well, it was served in a very acidic lemon sauce, which would've been fine if they hadn't paired it with tomatoes and cucumbers. It was hard to eat the tomatoes just because the fish didn't need any more acid. The choice to pair them surprised me. Plating was surprisingly subpar as well. Dessert was very good, the panna cotta was amazing. However, they forgot to put a message on the dessert as I had requested. They comp'd the dessert as a result (again, amazing staff) but the effect isn't quite the same. I honestly expected more--the total meal (if we hadn't been comp'd dessert) would've been $300 for 2 people after tip, and we didn't even order drinks. We dined there last night and were not at all impressed with the ambience. The service was very good; however, the food does not live up to the reputation that the restaurant has had in the past. The desert, which my two friends ordered, was beyond disgusting. It was a nice meringue topped with spun sugar which sat on a revolting purée of basil, a combination of which we found totally unappetising and not even palatable with modern high-end cuisine. The hostess, who was very accommodating and nice did remove the desert from the bill; but our overall experience was less than desirable. Celebrated my nephew's birthday here last night, and we all left extremely satisfied with full bellies. The servers here are so quick on their feet and really attentive. Whenever your water cup goes down a bit, they're already on it and pouring you more or asking if you need anything. Here's what we ordered: - raw unicorn oysters and clams: recommend both as they're so fresh and sweet tasting - grilled octopus: highly rec as well with the crispy capers and sliced octopus--it made for a delectable bite - tuna tartare: quite forgettable, but the overall flavor was good with the lemon - salt baked branzino: the star of the night. Perfectly baked, salted and melts in your mouth - sea bream: tender and perfectly grilled and seasoned - monkfish: definitely the meatier fish out of the bunch. I wasn't really feeling it, but the mushroom gravy it sits on is really umami and tasty - truffle fries: some of the best fries I've had. Super crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The service was disappointing from the start. But to make matters worse, in the end, the waiter, who wished me a happy birthday mid-meal, gave me the check, instead of my husband. He didn't even put the checkbook in the middle, just right by my side. I passed it to my husband, and the waiter said, sorry or pardon me, something along those lines. I've had the privilege of frequenting a few fine dining restaurants across Boston the past year or so. I will say that the service was amazing and the food came out in a timely manner, but the food itself was... lacking? The atmosphere was meh as well and came across as very private equity/corporate venture if that makes sense. Which was not helped by what could be described as Jordan's furniture art/prints on the walls. The food was good, just not sure if it's the caliber of "fine dining." The best thing on my plate was the vegetables unfortunately. The cornish hen was cooked just okay, the skin and meat was tough in parts. Not to mention my knife was extremely dull which soured the experience. My boyfriend's paella was pretty mediocre as well. They gave him a visibly dirty dish before it came out, which ended up being for shells, but online I saw it's also used for some sides. That had us questioning our decision before the food even came out. The calamari appetizer was fresh, but lacking depth of flavor in my opinion. The dipping sauces (an aioli and cocktail sauce) suffered the same fate. The free bread wasn't anything to write home about and the olive oil it was served with had an off-putting taste to it (I've had better at Bertucci's.) The butter in the middle of the oil was extremely had to scoop; it could easily spill all over the table. It was clearly for presentation and not designed for a pleasant experience. We had a lovely impromptu date night at this Theater District seafood restaurant. Made reservations through Opentable. Arrived on time and were seated within a minute. Too bad, because they had a live piano music playing in the bar. We were seated at a cozy table for 2. Spacing was decent between tables. Ambiance is elegant with white linens, black & white photographs, and high ceilings. (High ceilings also means it can be a bit loud.) Server greeted us quickly and brought over waters, drinks & bread. A bottle of Gerard Boulay Sibylle Sancerre Rose. New one for me and complemented the seafood dishes. Started with 1/2 dozen of the raw Kusshi Oysters from Stellar Bay, BC. Fresh with a clean & delicate flavor. For my entree, Broiled Maine Lobster. 3lbs of lobster delivered cracked and peeled over heirloom squash & baby carrots, broccolini and herbed butter sauce. Delicious. I could not finish and had to share. Tried a bite of that 48 Day Prime Dry Aged Ribeye and that was juicy and delicious, as well. Did not think I was going to be able to eat anymore, but pushed through it for some dessert: Boston Creme Beignets, with chocolate ganache, vanilla Creme, coffee foam, salted milk chocolate ice cream. My favorite was combining the beignets and vanilla Creme and salted milk chocolate ice cream. No matter, I had help with the rest so that my plate was clean. Ha! I had high hopes for Ostra. We came on a Friday evening and the restaurant was busy. We ordered two salads (snap pea and a special beet salad) to split but only one came out split. I was very torn about it but I ordered octopus and it was completely overcooked and rubbery. I was dining with friends for a special occasion so I did not want to ruin the mood by sending it back but I was not happy. I feel like this restaurant tries hard to be fancy and great but if you overcook your seafood at a seafood resto, that is a problem. Desserts were fine (blueberry tart, chocolate torte and floating snowball(??)) but not amazing - again, perhaps my expectations were too high. In MA in late July, I thought at least the blueberries would be really delish but they had very little flavor. I would choose Mistral over Ostra. read more

Ostra was quite possibly the highlight of a recent Boston trip - and that's saying a lot, considering my boyfriend and I were in town for the Laver Cup, museum hopping, and plenty of other restaurants! We came here for an early dinner one night prior to the Laver Cup - wish we had more time to spend here since the food was quite possibly some of the best I've had in the recent few months! We started off with the sea bass tartare, which was a delicious start to the meal. I really liked how they plated this individually for us! The truffle carpaccio was a great touch, and the fish itself was very fresh and complemented the dish well. For my entree, I had the ricotta gnocchetti. This dish is on the menu as a first course, but they offer it in a larger entree size, as well - which I'd highly recommend! This dish may be my new favorite pasta dish, anywhere, seriously! It had all of my favorite things between the tasty Maine lobster, mushrooms, truffles, and a midly spicy, cream sauce. I may make another Boston trip just to come back to Ostra for this dish! Given we were the first tables seated for the night, it was no surprise that service was good, as well. Ostra definitely is a fancy place here in Boston. Went here for a family dinner. We got oysters - all from East Coast octopus, and fried calamari as appetizers. The fried calamari was okay. I wished they were more tender. The oysters were fresh and delicious. I wanted to say the Massachusetts ones were more meaty compared to Maine's. The octopus appetizer was so good. It was so tender but not too mushy. I got paella as my main entree. It was too dry and the chicken meat did not have any favors. It would be so much better if the chicken had some of the seafood broth flavor to it. My boyfriend got the salmon and it was super delicious. The salmon literally melted in my mouth. His family got lobsters and branzino. The salt- crusted branzino was so interesting. It was soft and tender. My only complaint was it had too much lemony flavor. I got that they wanted it to have light sauce so you could taste the branzino but too much lemony taste would overwhelmed the branzino's natural flavor. The lobsters were great. They were sweet and perfectly cooked. We also got a snow pea salad. It was such a creative dish. I loved the crunchiness of the snow pea. Overall, great place. Once we walked in, we were greeted by a gracious hostess and a friendly manager named Massi. Our server was Andrea. She was great all night. Ostra has lots of different types of seafood dishes I never heard of. Our server Andrea helped us navigate the menu and answered our questions. We got some appetizers, they were flipping delicious. Sea Bass tatare, grilled octopus were really amazing. I never ate these foods before and I am very glad we chose them. For our entrees, I chose the grilled branzino and my wife got the monkfish. We shared our dishes with each other (we always do that, lol). Both were great. I loved both entrees. All night the service was amazing. Andrea was checking in with us often to see how things were going and keep my drink refills coming. Overall, it was a great dining experience from all aspects. I loved the location of Downtown Boston, the ambience of the restaurant, the soft music playing, the friendly hostess and manager, and our server was amazing. Ostra is a pretty typical fancy date spot. There is a dress code, and the ambiance and decor were classy and elegant. The price definitely reflected that, but I would say it was fair, given that the quality and taste of the food was decent as well. However, I don't think there was anything unique or special about the restaurant. Besides the fact that it was nice, it doesn't set it apart from other nice restaurants you would find at a hotel or somewhere on Newbury. So bring your date here for a nice dinner, but not if you want to impress them. The quality of all the seafood was excellent as expected, given that this is a seafood restaurant. We ordered the grilled octopus and smoked salmon tartare to start. They automatically split them for us, so the full serving size for the dishes are actually pretty large. The portion of the main dishes were pretty large as well- the paella was probably enough for 2 people. However, the seafood in it was definitely overcooked, and the taste was probably on the lower end of all the seafood paella I ever had. We also got the seared scallops, which we enjoyed, so everything was pretty well prepared besides the paella. For dessert, we got the snow egg, which looked much better than it tasted. Stopped in for an early New Year's Eve dinner to reign in 2019. My reservation was made a couple of weeks' prior, lesson learned to book even earlier if I want to get my ideal time slot. The décor is modern chic. Massive printed photographs dress the walls. The chandeliers are squid-like. There's a seafood bar with fresh catches of the day. Open kitchen concept. Clean white with an oceanic presence is the ambiance. A couple cocktails and wines were ordered. The cocktail was suggested to me based on what I was craving for and it was spot on. For our appetizer, we ordered a squid ceviche topped with truffles. The flavor was balance in tart, savory, along with the truffle, and other flavors. Our entrees included a whole fish and a scallop dish. The whole fish was deboned but intact. To our pleasant surprise, the fish came out halved, without our request. We each had our own plate of fish. The scallop dish was placed in the middle for our picking. The scallop sat on a bed chestnut paste. Both the scallop and fish was cooked to perfection. Moist, cooked thoroughly, and tender. For dessert we shared a mouse with a hardened shell on a bed of basil sauce, unique, since I've never had basil in a dessert, but delicious. We had an early dinner during the middle of the Christmas and New Year's week so I wasn't sure if it was going to be busy. The place was empty when we arrived but filled up as the night went on. High ceilings almost museum like ambiance but still very clean and well decorated. Our server was excellent and talked about the menu giving us recommendations. We ordered oysters, grilled octopus and hamachi crudo. All of the appetizers were excellent the oysters were fresh and briny but the hamachi crudo was by far and way the best appetizer. There were 4 of us and 3 of the 4 ordered seafood. We ordered salmon, paella and branzino. My non seafood guest ordered the filet mignon well done.
