Our experience:
We arrived promptly for our 8:45 pm reservation. Initially, we were told there was a delay in turning tables so we'd have to wait a few minutes. Not the biggest deal in the world, but an omen of what was to come. We were sat 15 minutes after our reservation in the covered/patio annex area, which is very nicely designed and preferred should you eat here (Don't, continue reading).
Like so many have mentioned in other reviews, once you're finally at your table, you will wait an eternity to have a server come over. This could be excused if this was a mom and pop restaurant who just gained notoriety over night, but Osteria Mozza is not that! This restaurant is massive and there is ample staffing throughout. With that said, when we finally did get service, the waiter welcomed us and immediately delved into the menu and what to expect. Initially, it seemed genuine, but then you realized he was doing a rote memorization of how to open tables. There was no specifics on meals, drinks, or the experience at all. Supposedly there are Somms that can talk through wine pairings, but we never received further information on this. Overall, He was extremely apathetic and seemed a bother to have us.
After we were provided the lackluster welcome, our server disappeared. By the time we could flag him down (another 15 mins) we placed our drink orders. I ordered a simple carafe of wine and my wife ordered a non alcoholic drink. My carafe arrived 10 minutes later, but it took flagging our server down again (20 mins after placing the order) for my wife's order. Initially, we thought because it was a non alcoholic cocktail (spritz) that maybe it needed extra time since the bar was busy, but to our surprise another waitstaff member came out with a wine glass and a CAN of non alcoholic spritz. We waited 20 minutes for a can of sparkling water essentially. Another embarrassing moment for a restaurant that bills itself as fine dining.
Once we finally get her drink, we ask the server if we can just place an order for everything, since there was no telling when he'd actually come around again. We ordered the focaccia, 2 mozzarella menu items, one primi each, and one second each.
The food was so disappointing. The mozzarella lacked any flavor and the accompanying meats might as well be taken out of a pepper ridge farm snack pack. The focaccia as mentioned is the most absurd rendition of focaccia ever. Those expecting spongy tomato topped bread will instead be treated to a burnt tortilla with cheese inside. Describing it as a quesadilla would give it too much credit for it being actually decent. This was disgusting and such a slap in the face for it being $26.
Those above mentioned meals, which prep time is very little, took roughly an hr to be brought out. In the meantime, we attempted to place new drink orders, but we're continuely ignored. We eventually had to directly tell him can we order drinks please when he stopped at an adjacent table to pick up the check (quickest service you'll get by the way). Again he seemed annoyed and as if us trying to pay for a complete meal was a bother. Needless to say this took another lengthy time to get my wife another non alcoholic drink and me a glass of red wine.
Eventually, we received our primi. Both simple pasta dishes. These dishes were actually the most enjoyable albeit extremely basic for what you are paying.
After our primi, we waited another hr! before our last meal of the night. It got so bad that eventually a manager came up to us and asked about our experience. He seemed surprised when we didn't say everything was great. We politely said we were still waiting on a last dish and he said he'd go check on it. At this point, it seemed as if something got lost in translation, because when we finally received our orders, the plates seemed as if they had been rushed out as if they never placed the order to begin with. My wife's chicken was unbelievably burnt and my lamb neck was chewy as if not cooked all the way through.
Ultimately, for a 8:45 reseveration, we did not get our final meals until close to midnight. By the time we received them, we were more than done and wanted nothing but to leave. When we asked for the check, we astonishly received the quickest service ever. Price point was expected, but $350+ for overall disappointment is criminal.
Chef Nancy and the individuals involved with creating this establishment should be ashamed to have their name applied to such a dysfunctional, apathetic, terrible excuse for a an italian restaurant. This place is a tourist trap and deserves to be sitted next to the Times Square restaurants that bill themselves as the "best restaurants in NYC!"
