My family and I did a day trip to Fredrick and of course we knew we had to try a good local eatery. We walked past a couple of crowded spots in the downtown area but it was drizzling and I didn't think my kids would do well with a long wait. Thanks to Yelp we found Oscar's; it's in a strip mall and nothing fancy but was packed full of locals which is usually a good sign. We had some brunch offerings which were pretty good. My kids LOVED the chicken tender kids meal! Been 3 times and each was sooooo good! First time was just a group of 3. I got fish and chips (which I'll try pretty much anywhere I go that has it). Excellent portion size, I had enough to bring some home and air fry later on that day. Five stars, it was delicious. I love a good club, and the turkey and avocado was on my second trip. I did sub out the cheese for American. I love most cheeses. Sad to say provolone is not one of them. However, I am a slut for any aïoli. Garlic being my favorite but pesto is a close second. *Chefs kiss* this was a group of 10 to 12, service was amazing. Drinks were full and smiles were abundant. Third trip was my mom brother and I (brother said his treat and he followed through ). We started with the Cuban Egg Rolls. Ummmm..... yum! Great start, the flavors blended so nice and the mustard sauce was delicious. 6 pieces total. The Chicken Chesapeake was my choice along with an Orange crush (bro was paying ‍). I did sub out for fries instead of mashed potatoes. Usually I base the service on if I've asked for a side of ranch, because I am a ranch fiend. Attention to detail as always, the ranch was brought with my meal. My brother got the jambalaya, only negative was he said it could have used more sausage. But taste overall was divine. My mom got the poke bowl. And basically had half leftover to eat later in the day. Two thumbs up from her as well! All in all Oscars is a legit place to get awesome food in a cool atmosphere. First time eating from Oscar's and I was quite satisfied with my meal. I ordered through GrubHub coz you know, covid. I don't even know where this place is located but I was craving American food and saw they were a GH perks member. So I got French onion soup and the roast beef with au jus and my friend got the Cajun burger. We both LOVED our sandwiches. My soup was so yummy and rich. The roast beef was perfectly juicy. See picture. I was also going to take a pic of my friend's burger but he ate it so fast I wasn't able to get a pic before he tore into that thing. All in all a really good meal. There are some dishes that are good, with the Reuben being one and ribs another. Used to come all the time but it's just not the same post Covid. Did take out a lot, but is again just not what it could be. Fish & Chips tastes fine but portions are like the size of 6 frozen fish sticks. Wings were tough and dry....had the buffalo seasoning. The Cole slaw is simply disgusting. Tasted rancid and warm. Flavor on that was always horrible. Easy to make better but someone is stuck on a home recipe they were never told tastes seriously bad...and I am a coleslaw junkie. Come on guys...do a poll...surely you will find out it is the worst out there anywhere in town. It didn't help they didn't put a lid on the ranch with the wings takeout so by the time it got home it was a sloppy mess. Didn't even finish three wings. Just not a fan any more and have serious questions about sanitation when the Cole slaw is always warm, even when dining in. Sloppy ranch soaked food is the end for us. I would add that the drinks are abhorrently expensive. That's another reason we stopped dining in. Was a fan, am the opposite now. We love this place for burgers and crab dip. The only disappointment during our visit last night was that the onion rings were nothing to rave about. They were cold and flavorless. However I definitely recommend getting the burgers and the regular fries. The Elderburger is my favorite choice and cooked to perfection. We also ordered the crab dip, as an appetizer and it's very yummy. In the past, I've ordered the shrimp and bacon sandwich before which is another one of my favorite dishes. Oscars Ale House has a nice selection of beers, which my husband loves and obviously it's in the name. During COVID, the servers are definitely wearing masks, the tables are 6 feet apart, and there are a few tables outdoors for the outdoor dining option. The only reason I'm giving this 3* is because the service was insanely slow. We arrived on a Monday afternoon for a late lunch after searching Yelp for a place to get good beer and food. We were sat and there were 6 other people in our side of the restaurant. (There are two rooms. A main dining room and a bar area). Our server came quickly and took our drink orders. My wife was driving so she ordered an unsweetened iced tea. I ordered a local IPA "the whistler" off their extensive menu. My wife got her tea and 15 minutes later I didn't have my drink. To backtrack we ordered an appetizer at this point. The pickle chips with old bay and their crab soup. Hooray!!! My beer came!!! As did our soup and appetizer. Look I grew up in Delaware eating crabs and things with old bay. The pickles are just basic. The soup was solid with crab meat on top and plenty in the cup. I ordered the blackened salmon sandwich and it was delicious. My wife ordered the Rachel which she said was decent. The weird part was they brought us our food and then brought us our fries like 1 minute later on plates. They said the kitchen was behind. It was a completely different experience as we were there for 2 hours. The 3* is for the beer catalog, soup, and salmon sandwich. 1* for the kitchen. This is basically a 2.5 at best. Would I come back? Probably not with all the other restaurants in a close proximity. read more

I've been here several times. I usually get the wings. But my friend got jambalaya so I decided to give that a try. That was the best I ever had in my life. I'll be back for that. This is a really cool spot. The draft list is insane (tons of highly rated IPA's), the poke bowl was huge and pretty good, and the bartender was very nice and liked to talk a lot so no one was ever really alone. I plan on coming back to check out more of their food and beers. read more

From the time that we walked in for happy hour, we were greeted and were quickly provided menus while being told that it was happy hour and all drinks were $1.50 off and appetizers were discounted as well. The manager at the time was behind the bar and I asked about local Frederick craft beer on tap. There were plenty of choices and the manager did offer his suggestions. I liked them but I am definitely a stout or porter drinker. We ordered the old bay pickles and they were absolutely delicious. I go knowing I'll get a juicy burger, medium rare the way I like it, a salad or one of their many other entree choices -- the iced tea is good and count on any dessert you pick to be extra good since they are made fresh on site obviously with care. I liked the cheesecake. It's a casual, well-known place where the service is good. I haven't had to wait to be seated ever (for lunch) even though they get in a good-sized crowd. We stopped here on our way from DC and the food, service and ambiance was spot on. Nice dini g area for kids. Prices were very reasonable. Joshua was our server and he was great! Was able to secure 6 seats during dinner hour without a wait on a Thursday evening!! Service was a little slow but nothing extreme for a larger party. Their sister location in Eldersburg is my only comparison. Food was good but my favorite dish in Eldersburg is the spicy calamari so I asked for a BOWL of the sauce and this is what I was given. This is NOT a bowl!! Calmari had barely (if any) of the yummy sauce! Clam Chowder had a brown sauce which is unique but it was still good. Love that they serve REAL fries!! We live a block from Oscar's and we go at least a couple times a month. Oscar's is our go-to place to eat and drink. Oscar's has a casual, comfortable vibe. One side is a slightly more formal table service. The other side has table service too, but it's more like a tavern with a bar. Oscar's has one of the best craft beer lists in Frederick. 66 beers today. The list contains a nice selection of beers from local breweries as well as more popular beers. They update their Untappd page frequently and you can subscribe for updates of their beer list in the app. The bartenders know the beers and can offer good suggestions. I am a fish & chips enthusiast. Every brewery, pub, restaurant, ... if they have fish & chips, I get it. Oscar's has the best fish & chips I've had. White batter-fried cod that's perfectly done and breaks up into bite size pieces. Get an extra tarter. I like the Burger Of The Week and frequently indulge to get something different. We went here while waiting for our candles that we made at Young Living Candle company to be ready. Even though it was a really bisy, and it was a Saturday night--they seated us right away! There were plenty of choices, and we loved the fried pickle appetizer. (I've never had fried pickles before and thought I wouldn't like them, but I think Oscar's did a great job with that! The server was extremely friendly and nice. The only thing that I would say that gave room for improvement was that I substituted Cole slaw for fries, but when the order came out--they brought fries. This place is great!! We came on a Friday night - it was busy, but we had a table in 10 minutes. I had their special gin cocktail and their Hawaiian poke bowl with shrimp tempura. It was amazing. Oscar's is a taproom first and a restaurant second. Or maybe it's a restaurant first and a taproom second. EIther way, they're both very, very good. I get so confused... When Oscar's opened, you could get a table in the dining room without any wait. Now, as word of the restaurant's deliciousness spread, the wait can be pretty long any day of the week. (Pro tip: arrive by 5:15, grab a countertop table in the bar area, order a brew (or better, a few), and watch the rookies wait in the small lobby). What to drink: beer. Their on-tap list changes daily (hourly if a brew is popular). Lots of variety: creamy dark stout, very interesting ciders, and everything in between. Ask for a shot-glass sized sample if you see something unfamiliar. I've never had a problem finding a beer I liked! What to eat: burgers. Oscar's has the best burgers in town, hands down (sorry Five Guys, but you've been relegated!). A large portion of really fresh beef, cooked to order (rare is my fav), loaded onto a brioche-like bun, dressed as you like it. Add a cheese; add onions; add andouille sausage or bacon; run it through the grass (lettuce and tomato, if you please) - then sit and wait for that perfect first bite. With crispy fries (or better yet, onion rings - yum). Niiiiiiiiiice. You can also get a decent meatloaf and other entrees, but somehow I always gravitate back to the burgers. Especially on Monday, a.k.a "5 Dollar Burger Night". Same food but even more value; definitely a night to arrive early. I'm torn by this review. I'd really like to tell everybody to stay away so I never have to wait when I show up. But I'm not generally greedy, so: 4 stars it is! What would elevate my rating would be two things: (1) provide some more seating in the "while you wait" area so that some of us older folks can better handle the wait, and (2) open up the old pool room in the back of the bar - at least for private parties (holiday season is around the corner, no?). Regardless, I will be a loyal customer for as long as both Oscar's and I share space on Mother Earth. read more
