I'm so grateful that my new neighborhood is big on carbs. Kirsh is a hop, skip, and a jump away; there's also Levain and finally Orwashers. I had been meaning to try Orwasher's on the UES but they always seemed to run out of the filling for the donuts whenever I went later in the day. The Orwasher's on the west side is a bit bigger, with seating inside and out. Let's just say it was a struggle narrowing it down to two options (because let's be real - I'll eat every pastry in my house if left to my own devices). I went with the New York Breakfast (lox, chive cream cheese, onions, and lemon zest on a toasted bagel) and the plain sugar donut filled with blueberry jam. The bagel was good for $9 but otherwise a bit small and puny on the lox for the price. Some parts were a smidge burned. Not sure if this counts as being in the same league as Ess A Bagel or even Absolute. The jam donut, on the other hand, was much better. Stuffed with blueberry jam (and not the Smucker's variety either), the dough itself was pillowy. Even though it was ridiculously crowded on a sunny Saturday morning, the line moved fast. My nit with the set-up is that the way the line is structured, you can't see some of the sandwich options on the other side of the register without asking someone to hold your spot and quickly darting over. For years I have heard people rave about Orwashers, so the other day, I had lunch across the street and stopped in to try their Russian pumpernickel and chocolate hamentashen. Both were disappointing. In particular, the pumpernickel bread was surprisingly insipid. If you are a fan of pumpernickel bread, go elsewhere, The only good news is that my lunch across the street at Gazala was divine. Brisket, brisket, brisket! The brisket sandwich at Orwasher's is a magnificent, meaty, and magical, experience! It is layer upon layer of well-seasoned and tender brisket, with the perfect combination of mustard and pickles. It is the perfect amount to satisfy your meat cravings. It doesn't hurt that the bread soaks up some of the juices without leaving it soggy so that the bread is still crunchy on the outside, but soft on the inside. This sandwich is a must-try! I discovered an onion and olive focaccia that pretty much changed my life. This savory bread literally melts in your mouth. It is like floating on a cloud of goodness! I came in the late afternoon and they were out of doughnuts. I ended up getting a chai fig muffin and a soy latte. Seemed pretty average. Price was about par for a nice Manhattan bakery. The muffin was just okay. The top was nice and crisp on the outside. There were lots of fig on the inside that remained a nice texture instead of getting watery. Maybe it was just made to be too "healthy", but it overall ate sort of dry. The soy latte was pretty good. They brought out the nice qualities of the coffee and none of the bed. The soy they used was pleasant. No complaints here. I guess I have to come back to try the jelly doughnut that everyone talks about when they mention Orwashers. read more

Only problem - a group of five people- regulars- who sit outside- reserve seats -stay for hours and try to tell other customers spending $$$$$$$$ - what to do and interfere with their space! Came on a Sunday afternoon. It was pretty packed, but they're pretty efficient here. It's a cute but small place. Got the New York Breakfast which is an everything bagel with salmon, dill cream cheese, chives, and red onions. Asked for no onions since I don't like them really. The bagel was pretty filling! Came here to eat with family from out of town before going to the American Museum of Natural History, and the we decided to grab some things and eat outside. There were a total of 7 of us so we were in and out often trying to figure out what to get and what to eat. I went the register to place my order, and halfway through I got a sassy comment from one of the workers that I needed to have placed my order at another counter. I explained that I hadn't ever been there before and so I had no idea, but I would do that in the future. The snarky comment didn't need to have been made, but she could have nicely explained that these items are typically ordered over there. Cool. That's all they needed to say. We ordered a few bagels with cream cheese, and I asked the counter staff to confirm that the bagels didn't have any egg products on them (my son has a diagnosed egg allergy) and the counter staff said it did. I asked if they could confirm it, and after asking the chef, the chef was able to definitively say that this was false and there were no egg products in the bagels. My boys happily polished off half a bagel each and 3/4ths of a vegan carrot muffin. Our out of town family also enjoyed the bagels, fruit cup, and other pastries they tried. I also got an iced mocha and another family member got a latte. They did a great job with our drinks. My husband and I also enjoyed our bagels, and the various pastries we also got such as a plain, glazed donut and an almond croissant which we took for later. I've had Orwasher products before from farmer's markets, but I have to say that the in store experience and products were much better. The outdoor seating they have set up at this location is also very nice, and shaded, which I appreciated in the July heat. read more

This is a cute little shop that has an amazing window display of sandwiches and sweet goodies, along with breads and coffee. I thought the bagels were just ok. They didn't seem very fresh and they were not properly toasted. They were also pretty doughy and not enough cream cheese. But not terrible. I will say, I wish the staff was nicer. They were quite rude to us actually, I wouldn't come back here just because of that. There are some tables outside to sit which is nice, someone should clean them more often. read more

Carbs are king here and I had my fill when I stopped by with my son. As soon as you walk in the door, you can smell that warm scent of freshly baked bread. There was a line on a Saturday morning around 11am, but it moved fairly quickly. It does help to know what you want, though, and I only knew that I wanted one of their Everything sourdough bagels with cream cheese. However, when I saw all the other baked goods, I was drawn to the Black and White cookie as well as a loaf of their Chocolate Bread. I would have bought the Rainbow cookies, too, but I held back because I was saving room for other food stops. Everything I tried was excellent, especially the Everything bagel. This place is very busy (we were lucky to grab two seats) so most customers got their orders to go. Orwasher's has great stuff and I would recommend it if you're a carb lover like me. read more

Thank god I don't live near Orwashers. I think I'd be in there constantly. We stopped in on the way to the Children's Museum of Manhattan (just around the corner). Every single thing in the display case looked totally drool worthy. We had a croissant, an avocado toast (don't start with me; I was doing it before it was cool), and a breakfast sandwich, and they were all excellent. Beyond that, the staff was particularly sweet! I was chasing my 18-month-old around the small store area (it was raining outside, kid was done eating, so sue me), and one of the employees gave us a mini black and white cookie on the house (which I nibbled on as well, and which was delicious). Totally unexpected and very kind. I'd definitely make a point of going back if I'm in the area again! read more

Found me my new favorite coffee shop/bakery yesterday when I randomly stumbled upon this neighborhood and cafe after biking around Central Park. It's rare to find a bakery that actually cooks their own bread onsite like this one, so that was a major plus for my hubby and I. There's a lot to choose from. Lots of fresh sandwiches, croissants, desserts, cookies, wine, coffee. I got the fresh mozzarella sandwich and my hubby got a lot bagel. Both were excellent. Prices were a bit high, but I'm willing to pay that for fresh bread baked onsite. I also really liked that there was a lot of outdoor seating which isn't always common at coffee shops. read more

We stumbled upon this place one day while strolling around the upper west side. The line was almost out the door but looked like it was moving quickly. We split a bagel with cream cheese which was very yummy/ your standard delicious New York bagel. They have a lot of cookies in boxes of about 12 that you can grab and buy as a gift or hostess gift. I got a croissant for the train ride home and it was delightfully buttery and flakey. I definitely would stop by if you are in the area. read more

Unfortunately it seems as though it's been Starbucks-ified and not at all the same quality it used to be. A thin line of cream cheese, hard bagels, and pre-portioned lox slapped on haphazardly. Stopped by this Saturday morning to try out their bagels. All of the low stars are correct about the bagels here - the bagels resemble dense rolls with a hole in the middle. They are supposed to be different than traditional bagels, being sourdough, but they are incredibly dense, and not my preference. Recommend getting bagels from H&H on 84th - I know this one is an imposter, but the bagels are pretty good. Also do not recommend the Valhrona chocolate bread, which is nothing more than plain bread with some chocolate chips - not particularly sweet or rich, which is both the things I want when buying chocolate bread. (I am a sweet tooth monster!) I did like the chocolate doughnut though - they will fill it with a jam to order, but I just got mine plain with a chocolate glaze, and it was satisfying. P.S. Saw this place on Kelly and Ryan's Bread Week segment on Live! I live a few blocks away so I figured I had to try it- I've now been there at least three times since last week. Their sourdough bagels are so nice and fluffy and don't get hard and gross when they toast them and I wait to eat it till I get to work. I also went and got an Italian sandwich for lunch one day, they asked if I wanted it cold or toasted and I said to surprise me - they toasted it and it was DELICIOUS! I prefer these bagels over Zabar's, but he wanted they only have cream cheese and butter as spread options! read more

I think I'm in love with this place! Really, it's just a bakery, but the attitudes of the staff there are excellent, and I felt welcome the entire time I was there (late on New Year's Day, so they could have been all sorts of crabby!). The Valrhona chocolate bread is incredibly rich and totally decadent (there's NO way I could eat this all in one sitting!). We also sampled their chocolate chip cookies, which were sinful! I think you'll get all the richness you could imagine from this French bakery when you're selecting the buttery options. Some of the best bread in all of the city, in my opinion. Fresh and flavorful with a LOT of different varieties. This location is near my apartment, which is great. If I buy a whole loaf, I can usually put half in the freezer since I can't really eat if all before it goes stale. And when I taw it out, it's perfectly fresh. I've made sandwiches or toasted their bread and everything is really perfect. They have the absolute BEST babka you've ever had. It's that good! The only bad things is The service here is usually just OK and the coffee is always so hit or miss that I just stopped getting coffee here. The egg ham and cheese sandwich is not great at all. Although they only have one choice of bagel sandwich - the salmon dill New York Breakfast, it was quite literally amazing. The New York breakfast is an everything bagel smothered in dill cream cheese with spring onion. Got this with the nitro coffee, perfect breakfast in my books!
