Definitely one of my favorite UWS spots! This is my go-to place for coffee or when I have a sweet tooth during my work breaks. Their jelly doughnuts are hands down the best! The jelly is always made fresh and gets hand-pumped into their doughnuts right on the spot! Dear Orwashers, I would like to take a moment to write and thank you for still making a quality old school black and white cookie. While some may scoff at this humble cookie and criticize it's excellence, it was my favorite cookie of childhood, and for that reason, holds a VERY special place in my heart. Also, unlike some of my other childhood favorites (like strawberry milk, WTH??), I still find the black and white cookie to be a superior cookie. They are so big and cakey and I love the place right in the middle where the chocolate frosting meets the vanilla before they finally settle on their respective sides. Many many family bakeries used to make this cookie and sadly, most of them are long gone. The black and white cookie has become a grocery store novelty, packed in soulless plastic clamshells to take home. YUCK! Orwashers, you have stood your ground in NYC for one hundred years! I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for any place that puts up an old timey looking storefront and has a "Since 19xx" date on their awning. That's how Orwashers caught my eye one day as I was heading uptown to a dinner. Orwashers is located on a corner, which gives it a great advantage of having an "L" shaped space that sweeps out in a rather dramatic manner when you enter. The counter has several glass cases displaying baked goods ranging from entire rolls of bread to cookies to their famous donuts that are filled by hand right in the shop. Wanting to sample a range I picked up a few different things: CINNAMON RAISIN BREAD The slice I picked up was nice and thick. It had almost a cake like texture with some wonderful cinnamon flavor and some nuts on top. I'm glad I didn't pick up an entire loaf because I'm sure it would have vanished by the next day! RAINBOW COOKIE Rainbow cookies are really hit and miss. I noticed the colors on their version were noticeably muted compared to ones I typically see in other bakeries. Still, wanting to give them a chance I picked up a couple and boy am I glad I did! The chocolate on the outside was rich and delicious while the cake inside had a really nice texture. It also had a nice, bright sweetness that I really appreciated. APRICOT ROLL This was an interesting little item that caught my eye based on the description. It originally looked to me like a pretzel bun of some sort with big chunks of salt on top. Instead, it turns out this dinner roll-like item was a bun with sugar on top and apricot inside. It was crusty on the outside but soft on the inside. I do wish however that it had a tad more apricot mixture inside to add some sweetness, but it was interesting for sure. The staff was very attentive and helpful and really seemed geared towards helping out customers. They moved quickly and my cashier handled my purchase efficiently. The counter was very organized and everything seemed very clean and tidy. I'll definitely return to check out their donuts (which seem to be their claim to fame). read more

Location: this is the new place of Orwashers which has its originally spot at upper east side. They absolutely have a really clear sign and large space for people to step in and dine in. They are trying to decorate the place well ... Service: It was my fist time here for sure so I am confused and trying to ask what I should go with. They absolutely do not wanna to explain ... Food: so I had their donuts with their fresh jelly inside. The jelly is frozen but the freshness is so clear that you cannot miss it while eating the donut. The donut is chewy. Okay quality. Came in about 10:30 on a weekday. Was greeted by friendly staff as I walked in the door. Love that! I ordered a chocolate croissant and a small latte. I've tried almost every pain au chocolat in the city and this might be my favorite. Perfectly flakey with just the right amount of chocolate. I have been here multiple times and it is the best bakery in Manhattan. The croissants, bread, cookies, not chocolate....everything is amazing! Bought a good seeded rye bread and decided to have lunch while I was here. Sandwiches seemed pricey ($12.), so I chose a salad, arugula with mozzarella and some sort of tomatoes. Tasty salad, but even that, at $10.00, seemed a bit overpriced. The clerk gave me a quenelle to try, so I decided to save it for the next morning's coffee. Dense, sweet, and yummy. So I think this is a fine place for coffee and pastry, bread to go, but I wouldn't eat lunch here again. read more

COVID-19 review: I like to stop by Orwasher's any time I'm on the UWS and get a few pieces of rugelach. I've tried all the flavors, and the raspberry is hands down my favorite. Just the perfect little bite of flaky pastry and the sweet/tart filling with some crunch from the nuts. I've also been eyeing their cinnamon raisin bread and the jelly doughnuts, so may need to branch out next time I'm here... their cold brew is solid too! read more

I love this bakery and am thrilled that it opened on the West Side. I have been a longtime customer of the East side bakery and now have another location to purchase my fresh baked bread from. The store just opened, and of course it was a bit chaotic but I suspect that within a week or two the staff will get the hang of it, and as customers come in with positive comments -- the store will last 100 years over on the West Side just like the original location. Everything takes time... As for my experience, I found staff very friendly and very nice! ... The store was spotless and very airy .. plenty of seating to enjoy a moment alone or with friends ... I picked up a few loaves and rolls for and have been enjoying our selection. read more

I came here only to try one thing: the chocolate chip cookie. The price was okay, but the cookie was too hard, and the flavor was not really memorable. I generally prefer cookies that are a little on the softer side, and have some chew. Of course they can't completely fall apart, but this one was more on the side of biscotti than brownie. This place is pretty clean though. They take cards, and there is a well kept bathroom here. I think they serve some other items like sandwiches as well that seem interesting, so that is cool. Overall, it might warrant a second trip? read more

We really enjoyed chef Jules coming out to speak with us and explain what he looks for in the perfect baguette (inside a cream color and air pockets; outside a nice crunch and defined ridges). We had a mixture of croissants, challah and a spelt bread to go. Personally, an almond croissant and cappuccino start a day off with a little ray of sunshine. Getting crowded on weekends, deservedly so. PS: just walked back home after picking up some holiday treats; I just don't understand the folk commenting with great authority about 'fake glowing reviews'. I stopped by today to pick up a bread for dinner. I saw some loaves of Irish Soda Bread so I bought one and brought it home. I love ISB but Orwashers's version was lousy. For starters, there was zero buttermilk or butter in the bread which are integral ingredients. Furthermore, the bread was clearly not fresh. It was stale and at least a day or two old. I was very disappointed in the ISB I ordered from Orwashers. read more

Definitely good news that this place opened a second location. Their doughnuts are to die for. The freshest and softest in all the land. Seriously though just the sugar doughnut is amazing but when you inject it with fresh flavorful jam you get something amazing. In the summer I had one with peach jam and it was just awesome. I know a good croissant when I see one, let alone when I taste one and it flakes to perfection. Orwashers is dominating the viennoiserie game in the UWS, arguably in the city. I know there are countless other bakeries in NYC, some with more hype than others. But Orwashers is doing the damn thing! The morning bun -- my gawd! Talk about power pastry! It deserves all of the accolades. The spelt loaf is ridiculous (in the best sense). It's dense, studded with plump raisins, and that touch of honey comes through just enough to give it just the right kiss of sweetness. The cinnamon raisin bread is another show stopper, especially when the bakers go all out and are really generous with the cinnamon sugar swirling. My mouth is watering. Just go, now! Really great products, but also really slow and disorganized service. The guy at the counter this morning seemed completely out of it, calling on customers out of order, telling them he was out of everything bagels when they were sitting right there in the display case, taking forever to type the orders into a tablet. Customers kept coming in and then leaving when they saw the line wasn't moving. I come for the bread and sandwiches, but would come twice as often if the service wasn't so frustrating. read more

I came across this bakery today. I was very excited because I have heard nothing but good things about orwashers. To my surprise it was by far the worst experience I've ever had. I walked in was greeted by two young ladies. They seemed annoyed that I walked in. One of the ladies took my order on a ipad, she kept interupting me in the middle of me ordering.I felt anything less then welcomed. I felt very uncomfortable and uneasy. It was a bit crowded.But the line seemed to move fast. Overall I purchased a ham and cheese croissant and fresh brewed iced tea. It was delicious. The food was great but the customer service sucked. Saturday around noon it was not too busy. I ordered the west coast bagel sandwich and a sugared raspberry jam donut. The guy taking the order was friendly but the girl at the register was definitely not and seemed bothered by all. The bagel was just ok. There was a definite lack of flavor and avocado! And to top it off it's not big at all and costs $8.50 for cream cheese, arugula and a few slivers of avocado. The donut was good, not extraordinary. There were a lot of seeds in the jam which is expected but may bother people. My bf got a chocolate croissant and really enjoyed it. He also got a black and white cookie but ended up taking off the chocolate from the top saying it was too sweet for him, but the cookie part was delicious he said. On a good note they had bottled Coca Cola. I live in the neighborhood and come on my way to the library next door, but won't be back for a while. read more

Updating my review to a 4 star. All my early points about the baked goods are still 100% accurate. I'd add that their foccaia is also amazing and something to pick up. The sticky buns still has so much potential but is still often over baked. I will say the service has improved markedly BUT every once in awhile they are still ridiculously slow even when it's not very busy. I now usually just order online and then pick up at the store. I love this place! They have great drinks and pastries. My favorite are the donuts: they use a syringe to fill it with fresh jelly (so many different flavors, among my favorite are strawberry and raspberry). Their prepared sandwiches are good, too, if you're looking for a meal. If the weather is nice, it's a perfect place to bring your book so you can sip some coffee outside while people (and dog) watching and reading. read more

I opted for their nyc special bagel and iced tea. The latter was nothing to write home about- pretty boring, generic black tea. The bagel was also pretty meh. I found it to be a very skimpy amount of lox for $10, so not a great value, and it was way overloaded with cream cheese. We picked up the famous stuffed donuts for Thanksgiving breakfast...employee told us they sell out so we got up early to beat the crowds (lack of a crowd upon arrival should have been a sign) and bought 4 donuts. Photo shows we could not get through just one...3 people and we couldn't stomach ONE of these very pricey, tasteless, obviously frozen (not fresh) hockey pucks! Go ANYWHERE ELSE for a better donut. I give this place 3 stars for creativity. I think the flavors of their bagel sandwiches are superb. However...and this is a major....their bagels are SO FREAKIN HARD. It takes me 2-3 minutes just to finish chewing one bite and after that, my jaw is exhausted! This isn't just a one-off thing either - I have been here a dozen times and each time I ask myself how they get this wrong...I'm currently having one of their bagels as we speak which prompted me to write this review. I'm still chewing on the same bite that I took when I started writing! Please, Orwashers, do some research and go to a few places around the city to compare your bagels with theirs. I want you to taste the consistency of a fresh bagel, slightly crunchy on the outside, warm, soft and (slightly!) chewy on the inside... and then adjust your recipe accordingly. read more

The gentleman at the register gave me an attitude as if I made the mistake and started causing a commotion. After refunding me my money I was giving the item back since I didn't pay for it and he continued to be rude to me. Anyone that has read my reviews knows I am forever obsessed with salmon, bagels, and Russ and Daughters...the problem is that restaurant is WAYYYY downtown, so I needed to find a good bagel place close to me to get my fix. Enter, Orwashers. Here's what they do so very well: all things with bread. Their bagels are solid and on the crispy side when toasted. Not as thick as moist as some other bagel shops. The breads are chewy on the inside and crisp on the outside. I've had a few of their prepared sandwiches and they were all good, minus the prosciutto sandwich; there just wasn't much meat in there so it felt like a waste of money. Their NY breakfast bagel (cream cheese, chives, lemon wedges and lox is solid but not much salmon given. It works for me, though. read more

Came upon Orwasher's on a whim and ended up being very pleasantly surprised. They have a great lox bagel and a wide assortment of baked goods. We got a chocolate doughnut injected with raspberry jam.
