The best bakery in NYC for so many things. Long known for its rye bread and fabulous Irish Soda bread, they have added breakfast pastries like buttery croissants of all kinds, delicious cookies and now great bagels. The sourdough and wine inspired breads match anyone's. The Pullman bread is a grilled cheeses best accomplice. Also the place is so clean you can eat off the floor. So I've visited here a few times, for some quick pastry like foods (cookies, Chocolat croissants, even something called "chocolate bread."). I know that these fancy shmancy new bakeries are sprouting up all over the upper west side these days. But this one, i just don't get the hype. Chocolate chip cookies? You can get two at Insomnia up the street for less money and is a much better cookie. Chocolate croissant? Ever heard of Pain Quotidien? And Zabar's has far superior bread-pastry options in their cafe. I've given this joint 3 chances. I guess 3 strikes, you're out? Or maybe I'm out. A welcome addition to the UWS. Faves are the Morning Bun, which is delightfully crispy and cinnamony, and not as cloyingly sweet as other local versions. Also pleasantly surprised by the chocolate bread, which other people have described as plain bread with chocolate chips. The day I was there, the chocolate bread had a pronounced cocoa flavor and a good portion of chocolates chunks. Another good choice was the Pletzel, which is best described as a chewy Montreal style bagel with a crispy pizza crust exterior. The coffee is good as well, strong with a slightly bitter edge, but not sour. However, every pot can be different, so YMMV. Will definitely return to try other breads. read more

Ohhh man, if you love carbs, this a place to try. I tried their turkey sandwich, chocolate chip cookie, and iced coffee. The sandwich is soooo yummy; the bread was an incredible baguette, turkey was fresh, cheese was a rich Swiss, and very filling. You can eat it and still go on about your day, without feeling sluggish from eating something too rich. The chocolate chip cookie was VERY rich, so you know it's heavy handed with the butter. I loved it. NOTE: it is a big a** buttery cookie, so if you eat it all in one sitting, you may get a stomach ache. The second time, I ate half of it and used some self control. I also tried their iced coffee, which was pretty good, but not anything special. I didn't try any of their speciality bagels, but I will be back to try them, as everybody was ordering them left and right. Aaahhhhh yes, carbs are good. read more

This was a great spot to grab a coffee and get some work done. For such a busy place, seating was surprisingly easy to get, and they have plenty of tables outside. They have tons of baked treats and sandwiches. The pain au chocolat was great, and not pumped full of way too much chocolate like some bakeries make it. The turkey sandwich was good, and came with avocado and spring sprouts. The pickle wasn't sour though, and I think most people (myself included) like a sour pickle with their sandwiches. If I lived in the area, this would definitely be my go-to spot for breakfast and studying. read more

Last time I went here I ordered an orange blossom brioche with apricot (see picture). Not necessarily known as one of their specialties but one I really enjoyed. This bakery is more of a grab and go kinda place rather than a sit and stay place. Would go back to try a loaf of their bread. Standouts I had here-- - An excellent bagel, toasted everything with a wallop of cream cheese and chives. Reminded me more of Montreal bagels than New York. - A French toast that felt like it'd been soaked in vanilla milk or custard. Sweet, and surprisingly fresh and light even though it had been made earlier. The manager gave me a quick tour of the bakery, visible to all through a pane of glass. They bake on site from 3am to midnight, making baguettes and bagels and pastries. But note that the wall of loaves behind the counter -- Jewish rye, Russian black, Swiss health, plus brioche and sourdough and more -- is kosher and baked offsite in the Bronx. The fact this place also offers sandwiches with ham in them would, I suspect, negate the kosherness of anything in the shop, but, it's still an interesting detail. Mostly it's for takeout. If you want to eat in, they have outdoor seating in warmer weather but otherwise you'll have to try your luck finding a space at the dozen or so counter seats. read more

Omg everything I bought here was delicious! We got the chocolate croissant and honestly the croissant was so excellent by itself. It was baked to perfection and every bite was a bite of flakey goodness! We also go two cookies to share. One black and white cookie and one chocolate chip cookie. Disclaimer: this is just a review for their bagels. I came to Orwasher's looking to try one of their in-house bagels. I got the Everything Bagel ($1.5) without any cream cheese or butter to try the bagel in its purest form. Luckily, this bagel was good enough that it did not need any spreads to mask the distinct cardboard taste that plagues many supermarket brand bagels. Make no mistake this is not a New York Bagel. Rather, this is a Kaiser roll with a hole in the middle and covered in everything bagel spice. But I was fine with this, and you should be too. Orwasher's is one of the oldest and most prestigious bread bakeries in the city, and most importantly, their Kaiser rolls bagels are excellent. read more

Meh. Visiting NYC for the first time I guess I just expected more from a bagel. You can see into the area where the pastries are made and you can tell by the shaping of the dough it is all house-made. But the flavors were faint and the cream cheese was seriously lacking. My husbands orange morning was better with a nice flaky dough and the perfect hint of orange. Another annoyance was there was no menu in site and the glass case goes alongside the line so you can't see whats available unless no on is in line. read more

Trendy upper West side coffee shop. Likes: Orwashers is located in the middle of all the desirable shops on the upper West side of Manhattan. It's within close walking distance to just about anything you would want to see around here. I ordered the Apple muffin, if that's deserving enough a name. It was rich buttery, flaky, and loaded with flavor. They had a decent selection and the prices were fair considering the area. Dislikes: I came on a Sunday morning and it was challenging to find a place to park let alone find a place to sit in the restaurant. Luckily my friend was able to save us some seats. I am guessing this experience is typical for Manhattan on a Sunday morning but I felt like people were crowding all around me because there were no seats. I'm not a claustrophobic person so it wasn't a huge deal, just feels a little weird. On top of that it was extremely noisy. Not a horrible experience. Just not the peaceful brunch some of us want on a Sunday morning. read more

Doughnuts that they don't even make that they fill half-a*d with fillings that they also outsource. WTF. Worse, their items are not on the same level as that of nearby businesses (LPQ, Kayser, Zabar's). Their bagels - esp the Everything bagel - are good. But the chocolate croissant is forgettable, the sticky bun meh, and the doughnut I got was not much better than the ones at Dunkin'. read more

With all the fake 5-star reviews pouring in*, John C's comes off as particularly hilarious. Orwasher's has finally expanded across town from UES institution, 100 years later. This location boasts ample indoor and outdoor seating in their corner location in the former home of Pet Health Store, right next to a loud bar with a creepy bouncer leering at the folks at outdoor tables. Unfortunately the staff were clueless and disorganized, frenzied yet incredibly inefficient. People were constantly entering and jumping the line, with staff not even aware enough to realize it. Their card reader has a chip insert that everyone tried for a few seconds until they were asked to swipe, so that should be closed or at least labeled. Unfortunately they'd run out of donuts, cookies, and most of the good-sounding sweets on the menu for the early evening rush. They had a lot of trouble both naming & describing the breads (which should just be labeled), mostly just recommending the massive loaf near the register (which underwhelmed)...AND with actually retrieving one once you've made a selection (knocking 2 loaves to the floor along with a bottle of olive oil that it took 3 staffers to clean). All of this is fine and doesn't dock a star because t's opening, but ultimately even against its local/organic/etc. competition, it's pretty darn pricey and mediocre: *There were also 2 reviews posted months before 9/1/16 opening, which were taken down The 'Swiss Health' spelt loaf was just fine for an astounding $6.26 after tax The canele, labeled more but charged at $2.18 (perhaps because no one seemed to know what it was), was solid read more

Used to go to the Orwasher's bakery on the UES when I lived there so when this UWS location opened nearby I started patronizing it. After about 10 visits, I no longer do. Overall, the pastries and cookies are probably 4 stars but the service / line management are terrible. If I am getting a croissant shoved in a bag, why do I need to stand in line behind people ordering complex coffees and having their breakfast egg:meat combo sandwiches toasted? Then to add insult to injury, at checkout, the screen prompts me to tip a buck or something ridiculous on top of the cost of the croissant. Management should turn that option off. It is the choice of the store to activate the tip screen in square and other payment processors, and it is ridiculous when I buy my kid a bagel with nothing on it to take with us that they want an extra buck for handing it to me. There are too many other places on the UWS to buy food, including a slew of new bakeries that are comparable to Orwasher's. The other problem is that they mark the price of cookies by the 1/2 lb, in tiny print. It seems a bit silly. So where it says $11/ that is $11/1/2 lb but the 1/2 lb is written a lot smaller than the $11. Even my little kids know that foodstuffs are typically priced per pound or per dozen! Just own your prices and write $22/lb! We get it - rent is high, insurance is high, paying employees a living wage (oh wait, you are making them reliant on tips, scratch that) anyway.... 1. Make 2 lines - one for stuff that needs no prep, similar to how Shake Shack has a cold food line. 2. Remove the tip screen 3. Everything was really fresh, and tasted great! I was a big fan of orwashers on the UES, so when I moved to the UWS and orwashers around the same time I moved, I was very happy. Im a big fan of everything I've tried here. My top choices: black and white cookies are good, you really can't go wrong with any of their breads, and I recently had a bagel here for the first time and it exceeded my expectations. The bagels are smaller, which I appreciate, and almost taste like a little sourdough roll with a hole poked in the middle. A welcome departure from the everyday big fluffy NYC bagel (although I will always love those bagels, sometimes you gotta switch it up). I got the New York breakfast which was their twist on a bagel with lox. SO GOOD. Perfect layer of salmon, cream cheese and all the fixings layered between an everything bagel. There is not a ton of space inside, so don't plan on hanging out for very long. During warmer months there is outdoor seating which is nice, but again it fills up pretty quickly. The best black and white cookies! Completely different from the ones that we see stacked up in plastic wrap at the deli. The cookie part is more like a soft mini layer of cake, and the frosting, though sweet, is not just sweet -- the chocolate half is very chocolatey and the vanilla half is noticeably vanilla.
