They don't have a large bagel sandwich or schmear section menu, they keep it simple here. But, I'm all about smoked salmon so we ordered the NY breakfast bagel sandwich. Bagel consistency was chewy and flavor profiles were light-for example I tasted a hint of the dill cream cheese schmear, hint of smoked salmon, chives, red onion , and lemon zest. Good, but would have liked stronger flavors or more of the ingredients. What shined was the cinnamon Babka! A dense bread with a soft gooey cinnamon goodness in the middle. One of the best flavors for a classic Chocolate Chip Cookie in nyc I've had so far. You can definitely taste the browned butter. It's a simple classic cookie that's crispy on the edges and chewy in the center without being undercooked or gooey. This is not for the people who usually prefer the mound styled cookies that levain has, but as a fellow levain fan, I personally loved this cookie a lot. I especially feel that a lot of cookies have too much chocolate in them, but I'm obsessed with the dough part of chocolate chip cookies. This cookie was a really good balance and it was delicious until the last bite. Gonna be an obsession for a while for sure. Other things to know the staff were pretty friendly and greeting when I walked in. It's a small place. No particular seating area available. Great to walk in grab what you want and leave. The perfect chocolate chip cookies exist! These cookies had perfectly chewy centers and crisp/ gritty exterior. It had a delicious nutty flavor which was more pronounced than the typical browned butter nuttiness. The combination of the bitter Valhrona dark chocolate and sweeter milk chocolate chips balanced out the cookie very well. The rainbow cookies were not great - they were just wannabe rainbow cookies. You can't just call a cookie a rainbow cookie because it looks like one. Some things should remain traditional, this is one of them. Traditional rainbow cookies are made with almond paste, jam, and chocolate. There is no almond paste in this cookie which completely threw off the texture. There is a layer of marzipan in these cookies which in my opinion destroyed the balance of the cookie - far too sweet and oddly textured. The cake layer is just regular cake with food coloring instead of the soft/ moist almond frangipane-like cake. The cookies were beautiful, but were very disappointing. I have heard about this Jewish bakery called Orwashers a while back from a video about the best chocolate chip cookie in NYC. Therefore, when I happen to be nearby one early morning, I walked in and ordered a bunch of things to try. Everything looked and smelled so good, so I kept getting more. Lol Here is everything my friends and I tried that morning and our thoughts. Chocolate Chip Cookie (8/10) - Maybe not one of the best I ever had, but very solid. It was a bit too hard, but 7-8 seconds in the microwave made it perfect, crunchy edges with a slightly chewy center. Morning Bun (7.5/10) - Good crispy crust with a light cinnamon apple filling. Nothing mind blowing, but quite a decent breakfast option. Almond Croissant (7/10) - Over baked and somewhat too crispy, this might be better on a different day. The marzipan lacked a strong almond taste. Dubai Chocolate Croissant (9/10) - Favorite item from the shop. The dark chocolate drizzle on top of the croissant paired very well with the crispy pistachio phyllo. What a combo! Delicious! Rainbow Cookie (6/10) - Dry and nothing special. Black & White Cookie (6.5/10) - Decent, but cookie was a bit dry. Raspberry Rugelach (6.5/10) - Average. Had better. Green Olive & Za'atar Stick (7.5/10) - I would have preferred more olive flavor, but the bread was very soft and fluffy. All of their breads and other baked goods looked so delicious that it was hard to pick just a few... but we landed on the powdered strawberry jelly donut (fluffy and so flavorful) and the chocolate & pistachio croissant (the filling was crunchy and reminiscent of Dubai chocolate -- very creative and yummy!). This is an old school bakery since 1916 with a sizable selection of baked goods with friendly service. I finally happened to be in the neighborhood and tried a few pastries. The jelly donuts are fresh and filled at time of ordering, but they are overly encrusted in sugar which makes them too sweet. You get to choose from three jellies to have them filled - strawberry, apricot, or cherry, which is a nice touch. The raspberry rugelach is very good but the sunflower seeds are unnecessary and distracting. No complaints with the chocolate rugelach. The pistachio schnecken is a very nice cinnamon roll rolled in cherries and dipped in extra nutty flavor. As a NY visitor, I've been trying to get to Orwasher's in the City for a long time to try their Black and White cookie. The Orwasher's in Long Island (Roslyn Heights) only sells mini B&Ws. What truly makes or breaks a B&W is the cookie base. This cookie had the right coloring (yellowish), softness and thickness. On top of that, the white (vanilla) had the ideal taste and was not too hard or soft AND the black (chocolate) was rich and super flavorful. Orwasher's certainly delivered. Their B&Ws are served in a thin, tight plastic bag, which keeps the cookie fresh and doesn't ruin the cookie when it's removed. The woman at the counter was super nice and helpful as well. read more

I do not come here often as it is out of my way a little bit. But when I do come here I am greeted with the smell of fresh baked bread. It smells wonderful! This store is located on a quiet upper east side street, but since they have other locations in the city it is well known. Usually on weekends it can get pretty crowded! They have no indoor seating and no benches or tables outside either so it is a take out place. When I have came here in the past I was not always greeted by nice staff. That may be another reason I do not come here often. But yesterday when I went in to try a coffee of a company that they sell I wanted a bagel with cream cheese. I did tell them I was allergic to fish as I know they have lox and maybe other types of fish spreads. The lady who was helping me told me there would be cross contamination as there have been lox on the cutting board where they would be slicing my bagel. So, I said forget it I did not want to risk anything. She was nice about it and was apologetic but, I find it a bit weird that they couldn't find a way to do this. I would have assumed they had maybe another clean cutting board? But maybe not. Anyways, this has turned me away again from coming back here though, as I said earlier the bread smells delicious and fresh but just is not the place for me. read more

Orwashers is one of my favorites! They have the best breads, pastries, cakes, bagels, etc. Often when I go there, there are some samples out so that's also a nice treat! Lately the samples have been pieces of babka or chocolate muffins- you can't go wrong. I tried something different on this trip, the cherry cheese danish. It was one of my favorite things they have. It tasted like it had a fresh cherry compote and a sweet cheese filling. The danish tasted like a buttery and flaky croissant. It was very satisfying. I also love their chocolate chip scones, any type of rugelach, and the chocolate babka. I honestly wasn't so fond of the viral pistachio and kataifi filled croissant. I've heard so much about the historic Orwashers and I hadn't visited until today. I only tried their bialy so I can't speak to their other baked goods. For one bialy without toppings I paid $3.50. About what I expected for the area. The bialy had a whole in the center with sautéed onions. The bread was soft with poppyseed. When I got home I ate it with light cream cheese (they don't carry light cream cheese and they didn't have tofu cream cheese at the time I visited). It was good, but it's not the best bialy I've had. It felt light and not doughy, which was good, but I wish more of the onion flavor came out. I was looking for something a little more rich. However, the selection of baked goods looked really fresh and amazing. I think I would absolutely love their other breads or sweets. Guess I just need to come back. Today I ordered an $11.00 bagel sandwich that had arugula and avocado on it - the west coast breakfast. it was entirely mangled and sliced unevenly and there was one slice of avocado and barely any arugula. The arugula that I did get was wilted. I asked for it toasted and they failed to do so. They also sliced it twice and wrapped each half individually in tin foil which isn't necessarily a problem it is just strange. The bagels themselves are excellent but they need to invest in training the people who work there on making a bagel sandwich. it's very poor quality and presentation for the cost. It should be consistent and reliable. You'd think for a hundred year old bakery they'd have worked that out. read more

We were on the hunt to try some donuts. We got a jelly filled donut and one of their cinnamon scones. Based on the presentation and lack of donuts, this isn't the place to go for donuts. Just a very basic donut with very basic filling. I guess it's cool that you can watch them fill the donuts? If you're looking for other pastries, then this is the place to go. They have a wide selection of muffins, scones, cookies, croissants and so much more. Not the most friendly staff. Think they just wanted to clear the line and get people out the door. The customer service I've experienced at the UES location is simply incredible. I usually place an on line pick up order at this location for Sunday mornings. Recently, they have lost several of my orders and therefore I have missed out on a few of my favorites. Once I explained this to the manager of this location, she wanted to make it right. Was given a Goldbelly gift for Christmas and used a portion to order a dozen bagels for Orwashers. The bagels did not arrive frozen or in dry ice and were rock solid hard. We followed the directions to warm the bagels and they were still hard. The bagels did arrive after expected due to inclement weather. Goldbelly did nothing to make it right so the bagels went in the garbage. I wish our experience had been better as we were looking forward to them based on the review of others. read more

Truth be told their bagels are just ok, but do yourself a favor and get the Orwasheire! ORWASHEIRE ** The creators of this item used multiple rounds of trial and error to arrive at the recipe they are happy with and I gotta say it is quite surprisingly a delight. It may not look too out of the ordinary but it does a great job with texture and flavor. The crystals of sugar add a nice little crunch as you bite into this airy, soft bread as orange zest and sweetness light up in your mouth in a delicate, fun, delightful way. Keep chewing, and you'll see that the flavor transitions from one experience to the next, exploring different aspects of what it means to be orange flavored. Also little bits of dry fruit in there for some textural change. BAGELS I originally heard of them through a list of best bagels in NYC but out of all the bagels I've eaten I wouldn't place them up high in the list at all unfortunately. However their dill cream cheese is delightful. STICKY TOFFEE BABKA BUN This was interesting, and def a nice little treat to dip into my coffee and munch on. Bits of walnut are inside as well. Service was slightly slow, as one staff member attended to coffees while another sliced bread, with no one attending to the queue. Once it was finally our turn, we opted for a NY Breakfast Sandwich (dill cream cheese, chives, salmon, and lemon) on a toasted everything bagel. The highlight unsurprisingly was the bagel, a rendition that occupies a step above its peers. It perfectly captured the quintessential NYC bagel's crisp exterior and chewy interior, and it was well-coated with everything seasoning that stuck on surprisingly well.
